Oregon sweeps Santa Clara, will head into Pac-12 play with six game winning streak

For the first three games of Oregon’s series with Santa Clara, the Ducks’ offense was largely carried by the batters at the top of the lineup. On Sunday, though, it was the bottom of the order that did the heavy lifting.

The Ducks busted open a no-hitter with three runs in the fifth inning en route to a 3-0 victory over the Broncos. The win capped off a four-game sweep and move Oregon’s record to 11-4 on the year in their non-conference finale.

“We’ll take that anytime,” Oregon head coach George Horton said. “Anytime you can beat up on team four straight times, whether it’s on home or on the road, you’re happy about it. We pitched awfully well and played defense; (Santa Clara) didn’t get an earned run in four games.”

Oregon was held hitless for the first 4.1 innings on Sunday before A.J. Balta reached on an infield single and then advanced to second when Matthew Dyer was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Spencer Steer, Oregon’s No. 8 hitter, cracked a two-RBI double off the left field wall to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead. Daniel Patzlaff singled up the middle to plate Steer and give Oregon all the run support it would need.

“Spencer, as every game goes by, looks more and more comfortable Horton said. “We think the world of him as a young player. He had some big hits in this series including today.”

Oregon’s fifth inning outburst was one of the lone bright spots during an otherwise unremarkable day at the plate. Oregon struck out just five times, but struggled to tee up Bulldog’s starter Michael Bono’s fastball. Bono scattered four hits in six innings of work, and forced 10 Oregon outs through the air before Steer’s double in the fifth.

“(Bono) was living up in the zone,” Steer said. “He had some velocity, so it was hard to get on top of him. We made sure to zone him down in the later innings and look for pitches that we could hit for line drives.”

Oregon starter Cole Stringer navigated his way through 5.2 scoreless innings and didn’t allow a runner to get further than second base. He gave up four hits and survived a few loud outs, but delivered one of his strongest outings of the year and tossed just 68 pitches.

“It was my fastball today — really just fastball height,” Stringer said. “Just keeping it down low. Playing at PK Park, it’s easy to get fast outs, fly balls, ground balls. It’s really easy to pitch with a defense like this.”

Horton said that he didn’t feel like Stringer had as much life on his fastball as he normally does, and that was partially why he chose to go to the bullpen despite Stringer’s low pitch count. Connor Zwetsch came on to relieve Stringer with two outs in the sixth and tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball.

The Ducks had a chance to add to their lead in the seventh when Steer and Patzlaff each singled with one out. Kyle Kasser than dragged out a 12-pitch at-bat that ended in a pop-up. After hitting a batter to load the bases, Santa Clara reliever Brandon Buckley got Jake Bennett to fly out to end the inning.

Brac Warren, who could still be in the mix for Oregon’s closer spot as the season goes on, came on to pitch the eighth for Oregon and threw another scoreless frame with almost exclusively fastballs. Freshman Kenyon Yovan, who has yet to surrender a run in his college career, allowed two runners to reach base in the ninth before getting a 4-6 groundout to end the game.

“It’s nice to have what we think is the luxary of three stoppers.” Horton said. “Zwetsch has been awfully consistent for us. Kenyon obviously has done his job, and then Brac. … The luxury of having three guys that you trust to give the ball to at the end, if you’re fortunate to have a lead, is nice for us.”

Oregon will travel to Berkeley to begin Pac-12 play with a three-game series against the Bears (6-7).

Quick Hits: Oregon sprinters find motivation through friendly competition, Dillon Brooks hits game-winner

— Oregon track and field boasts one of the deepest groups of women sprinters in the country and has dominated meets throughout the indoor season. The Emerald’s Hannah Bonnie writes that the teams key to success for the Ducks is the friendly competition that takes place everyday at practice.

— Dillon Brooks bailed the Oregon basketball team out once again with his late game heroics on Wednesday. Brooks drilled a game-winning 3-pointer with less than a second left to lead Oregon to a comeback win over California in Berkeley and keep the Ducks in the Pac-12 title race.

— Speaking of Oregon’s 3-point shooting, The Emerald’s Gus Morris points out that Oregon has been the top 3-point shooting team in the Pac-12 since conference play began. The reason is simply an improvement in shot selection, according to players.

“We’ve always had confidence in the way that we can shoot the basketball,” Oregon guard Casey Benson said. “It’s just a matter of finding the right shots and taking the right shots.”

— Oregon men’s golf is coming off a national championship last spring, and is enjoying another stellar campaign this year. The Ducks are currently the No. 10 team in the country and Oregon senior Wyndham Clark in the No.1 collegiate golfer in the latest Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings.

— Oregon football filled its vacant co-offensive coordinator spot with the hiring of Marcus Arroyo on Tuesday. Arroyo will coach the Oregon quarterbacks and tight ends in addition to his offensive coordinator duties.

Dillon brooks hits another game-winner as Oregon rallies back to top Cal

Game-winners are starting to become a habit for Dillon Brooks.

The Oregon star drilled a dagger three at the buzzer Wednesday night to give the Ducks a 68-65 win over the California Bears (18-9, 9-6) in Berkeley.

Brooks’ winning jumper was the exclamation point on a furious Oregon comeback that featured a little luck and plenty of clutch shooting. The Ducks trailed by as many as 15 in the second half before embarking on a 28-12 scoring run that started at the 10 minute mark, and ended when Chris Boucher scored on a backdoor layup to give Oregon its first lead of the game with 1:51 remaining.

The Ducks’ comeback effort was largely sparked by scoring efforts of Boucher. The Duck senior didn’t score a point in the first half before unleashing an 18 point outburst in the second half that included three 3-pointers. Late 3-pointers by Boucher and Payton Pritchard kept the Ducks afloat as the Ducks struggled to find offensive consistency.

The Ducks shot just 7-of-21 from deep, and two of those 3-pointers came from Brooks. With just under a minute left in regulation, Brooks drilled a fading turnaround jumper that gave the Ducks a 64-63 lead. Cal’s Jabari Bird missed a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession, and Tyler Dorsey hit 1-of-2 free throws for the Ducks to give Oregon a two point lead.

Cal star forward Ivan Rabb tied the score ay 65-65 with a put-pack layup, and then Brooks went to work. His last shot on Wednesday was eerily similar to another game-winning jumper he hit earlier in the season against UCLA, and came on nearly an identical play.

Brooks finished with a game-high 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting for the Ducks, and Dylan Ennis chipped in 13. Bird finished with 20 points and nine rebounds for Cal.

The Ducks will finish out their Bay Area trip when they face Stanford on Saturday, and then take a week off before their regular season finale at Oregon State on March 4.

Oregon officially announces hiring of Marcus Arroyo as co-offensive coordinator

Oregon has officially hired Marcus Arroyo as its co-offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and tight ends coach, the school announced in a press release on Tuesday.

Courtesy: Oregon Athletic Department

Reports broke on Feb. 9 that the Ducks were working to hire Arroyo in order to fill the void left by David Reaves, who was hired as Oregon’s co-offensive coordinator in December before resigning after he was arrested for DUII on Jan. 22.

“You kind of lose people — you got the opportunity to replace them with someone better,” Oregon head coach Willie Taggart said of Arroyo’s impending hiring in an interview with KVAL on Feb. 19.  “And I got a chance to upgrade our staff in a certain way. Marcus is a great coach and had West Coast ties. I thought he would do well with our guys here. That was big time for us.”

Arroyo comes to Oregon after working as the running backs coach at Oklahoma State for the previous two seasons. He was touted as an outstanding recruiter at the running back position while with the Cowboys, and was reportedly contacted by Fresno State last year about the Bulldogs’ vacant offensive coordinator position.

Arroyo signed a two-year contract with the Ducks. He’s due to make $300,000 in his first year and $400,000 in his second year. He’s also eligible for a variety of bonuses for academic and athletic performance of Oregon’s football team.

Before serving as the running backs coach at Oklahoma State, Arroyo was quarterbacks coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Previously, he was the interim offensive coordinator and play caller for the Bucs. Prior to his stint in the NFL, Arroyo was offensive coordinator and outside receivers coach at Southern Mississippi.

Also, Arroyo has coached at Cal, Wyoming and his alma mater of San Jose State — beginning his coaching career there in 2003 as an undergraduate assistant.

He’s worked with NFL players Keenan Allen (Los Angeles Chargers), CJ Anderson (Denver Broncos), Richard Rogers (Green Bay Packers) and Marvin Jones (Cincinnati Bengals).

Freshman arms lead Oregon to victory over Fresno State

Oregon baseball topped the Fresno State Bulldogs 3-2 on Monday thanks largely in part to the efforts of three freshman pitchers. With the win, the Ducks drew a 2-2 split in their season-opening series.

James Acuna captured his first career win in an Oregon uniform and struck out five Bulldog batters in three innings of relief work. Acuna and fellow freshman Ryne Nelson and Kenyon Yovan combined to throw five scoreless innings for the Ducks after Fresno State scored two early runs off of Oregon starter Isaiah Carranza.

The Ducks took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on a two-RBI single by A.J. Balta before Fresno State tacked on a run in the bottom of the third to even it at 2-2. Jake Bennett roped an RBI single in the fifth inning to send home the go-ahead run and give Oregon a 3-2 lead.

Bennett went 2-for-2 and walked twice for the Ducks, while Scott Silva went 2-for-4 with two RBI for Fresno State. The Ducks got four innings out of Carranza, but he failed to strike out a batter and gave up five hits.

The Ducks will gave a slight break before they head to San Diego on Feb. 24 to take part in the Tony Gwynn Classic on the University of San Diego campus. They face UC Irvine at 1 p.m. to start the tournament.

Oregon delivers its best shooting performance of the year, routs Arizona 85-58

As he backpedaled down the court midway through the first half on Saturday, Oregon guard Tyler Dorsey cracked a smile and stared at his right hand as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

Dorsey had just drilled his third 3-pointer in as many possessions and might as well have been shooting fireballs out of his hand as he and Oregon rained baskets onto the Arizona Wildcat defense. Dorsey’s shooting flurry sparked a 28-5 scoring run for the Ducks that ultimately ended in an 85-58 blowout win over an Arizona team that was widely considered one of the best in the country.

During an afternoon that featured three top-5 losses throughout the nation, Oregon stole the show with a performance that was nationally televised on ESPN. The Ducks shot 16-of-25 from 3-point range and finished the game with 26 assists on 30 field goals.

“That’s the best game I’ve ever played here in the three years I’ve been here,” Oregon forward Dillon Brooks said. “Guys were focused and guys were confident in their shots. … Tyler is the X-factor on our team. He gets us going.”

Dorsey finished the game with a team-high 23 points in 28 minutes. He shot 6-of-6 from 3-point range and drilled four shots from downtown in the first half.

“After I knocked down the first one, I just tried to keep it rolling and they kept finding me throughout the game.” Dorsey said. “I just keep it calm, but we had great energy. It was great emotion out there. We just had a hot hand tonight; everybody was shooting.”

The Ducks began the game by attacking the paint on their first three possessions, determined to prove that they were willing to go inside despite the presence of Arizona 7-foot forwards Lauri Markkanen and Dusan Ristic.

After three minutes had passed, Oregon’s dribble drive attack led to a 3-pointer from Brooks to give Oregon a 5-4 lead. Brooks drilled another 3-pointer a minute later and Dorsey then unleashed three triples in two minutes to give Oregon a 19-6 lead and force an Arizona timeout.

The Wildcats managed to cut the deficit to 21-11 and with eight minutes left in the first half, Brooks picked up his second foul and was subbed out. Without its best player on the floor, Oregon proceeded to go on a 17-0 run that featured five 3-pointers.

“It was getting ridiculous,” Brooks said. “But, you know, guys feed off each other. … One guy gets hot and then another guys gets hot and next thing you know its five, six, seven 3-pointers.”

It was more of the same for Oregon in the second half as the Ducks continued to pour in 3’s. With 11 minutes left in the half, Jordan Bell tossed a lob to Chris Boucher in transition and Boucher in transition and Boucher slammed it home to push the Oregon lead to a game-high 37 points.

Dorsey shot 6-of-6, Brooks 4-of-7 and Casey Benson went 3-for-5.

“Heck, we don’t even shoot 16-for-25 in shooting drills,” Oregon head coach Dana Altman said.

NBA scouts from four different teams showed up to Matthew Knight Arena on Saturday, almost certainly to watch Arizona 7-foot standout Lauri Markkanen. Instead, they saw Oregon shred an Arizona defense that was ranked 15th in the nation coming into the game. On the defensive end, Bell finished with three blocks and Oregon forced 13 Arizona turnovers. The Ducks held Markkanen, one of the best shooters in the country, to just four points in 27 minutes.

“Sometimes you have to give credit to the appointment,” Arizona head coach Sean Miller said. “It wasn’t lack of preparation, it wasn’t lack of effort; they had some answers. They’re an excellent team.

“I hope that’s their best. If they have another level above that, that’s a bad thing for every team in the country.”

Oregon is now in sole possession of first place in the Pac-12 and will likely surge in next week’s AP Poll. The hardest part of the Ducks’ schedule may be ahead of them, though, as they prepare to play five of their last seven regular season games on the road.

Oregon looks to get back on track against Arizona State

Oregon enters Thursday in a position it hasn’t faced since late November; the Ducks are tasked with bouncing back from a loss after they saw their 17-game winning streak come to an end when they lost to Colorado last Saturday.

The Ducks will welcome Arizona State (10-12, 3-6) to Matthew Knight Arena and aim to start a new winning streak as they face  a Sun Devils squad that has scored the second most point in the conference.

A look at both teams entering Thursday’s matchup

— Speaking of that powered Sun Devils offense, Arizona State has three players averaging more points per game than Dillon Brooks, Oregon’s leading scorer. Torian Graham , Tra Holder and Shannon Evans II form a potent three-headed scoring monster for the Sun Devils on the perimeter.

— While Graham and Holder are second and third in the Pac-12 in scoring respectively, Obinna Oleka has arguably been Arizona State’s most valuable player. The 6-foot-7 junior forward is second in the conference in rebounding (10.6 per game) barely trailing preseason All-American Ivan Rabb of Cal.

— While the Sun Devils have been almost unstoppable on the offensive end, they have been abysmal defensively. Arizona State is surrendering more points per game (83.7) by a wide margin. The Sun Devils have given up atleast 75 points in each of their last nine games.

— Oregon sits in the middle of the pack in the conference in terms of team free throw shooting. While they shoot a pedestrian 71 percent from the line as a team, freshman guard Payton Pritchard is shooting 81 percent from the charity stripe — far and away the best on the team. Pritchard may be Oregon’s go-to-guy at this point if they need to bury some late-game free throws, despite his status as the youngest player in the starting lineup.

Oregon’s recruiting class could improve from good to great on National Signing Day

With fewer than 24 hours until National Signing Day on Wednesday, Oregon is riding a tremendous upward trend in the national recruiting rankings.

Since Willie Taggart was hired as Oregon’s head coach in early December, he has been working like a madman to add to an Oregon recruiting class that was ranked in the mid-40’s nationally by most recruiting databases when he arrived.

As is, the Ducks’ 2017 class currently resides in the low 20’s according to most databases, thanks in large part to an influx of four signees in four days last week.

Oregon is in the mix for several more highly touted recruits, and if things swing the Ducks’ way on signing day, they could land their most heralded recruiting class in at least four years. As of Jan. 30, 17 players from the class of 2017 had committed to play at Oregon next year — the last time the Ducks landed a spot inside the top-20 of 247Sports Composite rankings was 2013.

Follow along with the Emerald sports team @ODESports on Wednesday for up-to-the-minute news on all things Oregon recruiting.

Oregon’s top targets

— Josh Falo: The top priority for the Ducks on signing day is Falo, a 4-star tight end from Sacramento, California, who is listed as the top tight end in the nation by ESPN. Fallo recently tweeted that he will not announce his commitment until signing day. He took his final visit to Oregon on Jan. 27. The Ducks will have to fight off Colorado and USC for his signature.

DeMarco Artis: He tweeted on Monday that Oregon and Baylor are his two finalists. The 3-star edge-rusher from Sanford, Florida, recently pulled his commitment from Florida State, and at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, he could add instant versatility to Oregon’s front seven.

Juliano Falaniko: Listed as a 4-star safety according to Rivals, Falaniko is already committed to USC but took a late visit to Eugene on Jan. 20. Two Oregon signees recently drove seven hours in an attempt to flip Falaniko, and it’s possible that he could spurn the Trojans on signing day and join the Ducks.

Dommodore Lenoir: Lenoir was the gem of the Ducks’ 2017 recruiting class before the 4-star cornerback decommitted midway through the 2016 season. He has cut his final three teams to Oregon, Nebraska and Mississippi and reportedly has built a strong relationship with the new Oregon coaching staff.  Rivals’ No. 1 ranked athlete could be set to take his talents to Eugene and join a class that is already loaded with cornerback talent.

The longshots

— Joseph Lewis: The consensus 5-star wideout and ESPN’s No. 16 player took his visit to Eugene in October, but Nebraska is figured to be the favorite for the Los Angeles native at this point.

George Moore: Moore, a 4-star junior college tackle, would make an immediate impact for the Ducks and is the top-rated JUCO recruit in the country. He took a late visit to Oregon, and would be a huge get for Oregon co-offensive coordinator Mario Cristoabal. But Auburn, Cal and Washington State are also vying for his services.

Greg Johnson: The 4-star athlete is slated as a cornerback, but can basically play any skill position on the field, too. He took an official visit to Eugene two weeks ago, and recently announced that he is down to USC, Oregon and Nebraska. Johnson would be a big pickup for the Ducks. He would also become the fourth player to decommit from Arizona before joining the Ducks.

The current class of 2017 (all rankings via 247Sports Composite Rankings)

  • Thomas Graham Jr. (CB) — 4-star
  • Jaylon Redd (ATH) — 4-star
  • Braxton Burmeister (QB) — 4-star
  • Isaac Slade-Matautia (OLB) — 4-star
  • Alex Forsyth (OG) — 3-star
  • Rutger Reitmaier (DT) — 3-star
  • C.J. Verdell (RB) — 3-star
  • Bruce Judson (ATH) — 3-star
  • Popo Aumavae (DT) — 3-star
  • Sampson Niu (MLB) — 3-star
  • Darrian McNeal (ATH) — 3-star
  • Jordan Scott (DT) 3-star
  • Austin Faoliu (DT) 3-star
  • Darrian Felix (RB) 3-star
  • John Johnson III (WR) 3-star
  • Nick Pickett (ATH) 3-star
  • Adam Stack (K) 3-star
  • Daewood Davis (WR) 3-star
  • Cyrus Habibi-Likio (RB) 3-star
  • Demetri Burch (WR) 3-star

Oregon falls to Colorado, suffers first loss of Pac-12 play

Oregon suffered its first loss of Pac-12 play Saturday night and snapped its 16-game winning streak in the process as the Ducks fell 74-65 to Colorado in Boulder on Saturday.

The Ducks had trouble taking care of the ball for much of the first half and entered halftime trailing for just the fourth time this season.

Oregon struggled to keep pace with Colorado early on in the second half and were in danger of seeing a five point deficit grow with 10 minutes left in regulation. But freshman Payton Pritchard tallied off eight points — including two 3-pointers — in a three minute span and the Ducks tied the game at 51-51 with five minutes remaining.

Oregon quickly began to unravel as Wesley Gordon hit a layup, and Derrick White hit a 3-pointer in a span of three possessions. The Buffs then scored six unanswered points from that juncture, and despite another late push from Pritchard, Oregon never cut the lead shorter than four.

The Ducks turned the ball over 16 times to just 12 assists and shot 6-of-20 from 3-point range. Pritchard led the Ducks with a career-high 19 point son 6-of-12 shooting and added six rebounds. Oregon’s other four starters shot a combined 12-of-34 from the field.

The loss marks Oregon’s first since Nov. 21 and extends the Ducks’ winless streak at Colorado. Oregon drops to 8-1 in Pac-12 play, leaving Arizona (8-0) as the only undefeated team in the conference.

Climate change rally seeks to educate and draw attention

University of Oregon students planned a walkout and rally on the afternoon of Jan. 23 to stand up against newly-elected President Donald Trump’s staunch climate change denial stance. The event, planned to stretch from 1 to 3 p.m., shut down about 30 minutes early.

Marley Griffiths, a UO freshman, heard about the event on Facebook but didn’t leave class to attend. “I think I was expecting a bigger crowd but I know people had class,” Griffiths said.

The rally, hosted by the Climate Justice League, was billed as a walkout to resist Trump and his cabinet’s streak of climate change denial. Trump has said he will reverse Barack Obama’s climate change combat efforts.

“We’re just showing our support and resistance to climate change and what Trump is so obviously displaying,” Selena Blick, co-director of the Climate Justice League, said. “We’re trying to empower students on campus to voice their support on this issue.”

Sociology professor John Foster said he had “some bad news” for the crowd of 70 that sat around the EMU Amphitheater on Monday afternoon.

“We are in a very, very serious situation,” said Foster. “When we are talking about the carbon budget, we are talking about the point of no return.”

Few walked out of class early in protest of Trump, but the rally was successful in attracting passersby between classes.

According to Foster, humanity was going to go over the climate cliff despite the Paris agreement and clean-energy initiatives spurred on by the most recent president.

“Under Trump, everything is worse,” he said

Rachel Penrose, a first year biology major, said the rally caught her attention on her way to class. She didn’t know about the rally but stopped to listen to speakers explain the history of climate change denial.

“This is a good way to help people become more educated,” Penrose said. “It’s the best place to start to try to organize something.”

According to Blick, the University of Oregon branch of the Climate Justice League planned Monday’s walkout after hearing about similar protests at universities around the country.

Deb McGee, a volunteer for a climate change awareness group based in Eugene called 350 Eugene, spoke to the crowd. She said the idea of the “350” initiative is based on the idea that 350 parts per million of carbon is the upper limit for a safe atmosphere for “our species and many species to live in.”

“We saw it on the 350 website as it being a national movement across other college campuses,” Blick said. “So we pulled from that and just kind of made it our own a little bit and just really tried to bring a lot of awareness about the issue.”

According to the event’s Facebook page over 350 people were “interested” in the event but a little more than 100 attended. Blick said that the Climate Justice League was happy with the turnout and mentioned the short notice they gave to students.

“It was more just to show support,” Blick said. “The walkout rally format was designed by students at other schools and we’re copying that to show support across the country.”

The goal was to raise awareness about climate issues and the fight right-wing politicians — the Trump administration in particular — plan to bring against environmental proponents. However, most students who came out on Monday were already savvy to climate change issues.

“I came out to support fighting against climate change deniers,” Griffiths said. “I was expecting to see experts talking about it, sharing their side, their opinions, theories and ideas.”

Students may be experiencing burnout following an active weekend preceded by the inauguration of the 45th president.

“I’ve been to a couple of rallies this size,” Griffiths said, “so I wasn’t surprised by it […] there’s not as many people here. I think this is a good start but I think there are more effective ways to spread the word.”

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that the event was planned to continue until 4 p.m. This has been been corrected and the Emerald regrets this error. The original headline was also changed to better reflect the tone of the story.
