Sexual assault, harassment concerns involving football players surface

Allegations of sexual harassment, sexual assault and retaliation have surfaced regarding the University of Minnesota football team.

The Star Tribune originally obtained email documents between University officials from July 16 that revealed two concerns of sexual assault by individual players, two concerns of sexual harassment by groups of players and one concern of retaliation involving a group of players.

Complaints filed against former Chief Information Officer

Former University of Minnesota Chief Information Officer Scott Studham resigned from his position last week after President Eric Kaler asked him to step down.

The University has received four reports about Studham’s conduct since May. The complaints allege that he used University funding for personal expenses, was unfair in hiring decisions and misused his travel expenses and vacation days.

University enacts affirmative consent policy

After months of discussion, the University of Minnesota’s affirmative consent policy took effect Monday, according to a letter the school sent to student government leaders.

In the letter, University President Eric Kaler said he received permission from the Board of Regents to immediately implement the school’s “yes means yes” policy, which had language tweaked to more clearly define affirmative consent.

The change comes in time to educate new students during welcome week, Minnesota Student Association President Joelle Stangler said.

Man allegedly left flares in Coffman

University of Minnesota police arrested a man on Tuesday who allegedly left a bag of smoke flares inside Coffman Union on Sunday, which pushed police to close the building the next day.

A criminal complaint filed Wednesday accused 35-year-old Minneapolis resident Jason Robert Johnson of two felony counts involving terroristic threats and intent to damage property or cause injury with an explosive device.

Johnson is scheduled to appear in court Thursday at 1 p.m., said David Brown, chief deputy county attorney at the Hennepin County Attorney’s office. Bail is $100,000.

Man allegedly left flares in Coffman

Suspicious bag in Coffman sparks FBI, UMPD investigation

University of Minnesota police are working with the FBI after a suspicious bag found in Coffman Union prompted the building’s closure Monday.

Barricades blocked both footbridges leading to the student union Monday afternoon, and yellow tape kept students and employees away from the building. Officials said it’s safe to reopen Coffman on Tuesday, although the investigation into the suspicious package and who put it there is still ongoing.
