Women’s lacrosse loses to Penn, drops to 2-3 record

The Drexel University women’s lacrosse team traded wins and losses to start the year at 2-3, including a loss to the University of Pennsylvania (Photograph courtesy of Greg Carroccio/Sideline Photo).

The Drexel University women’s lacrosse team has traded wins and losses to begin the 2019 season with a current record standing at 2-3. Initially, they took a tough loss to Johns Hopkins University Feb. 10, but bounced back to take a win from Iona College Feb. 16. Since then, the Dragons unfortunately lost to No. 20 Georgetown University Feb. 23, and bounced back again for another incredible win against Rutgers University March 2. The most recent matchup came against the University of Pennsylvania March 9 during which the Dragons lost 12-10, March 5.

In the game against Rutgers, the two teams were going back-and-forth with scoring up until it was tied at seven goals each with 2:29 left to play in the first half. Sophomore Colleen Grady got her first goal of the game to put the Dragons up 3-2. After learning how to get past the Rutgers goalkeeper, she ended with four goals in the first half alone.

With the score tied at seven, the Dragons took possession and scored three more goals on Rutgers to bring the score to 10-7 at halftime. Although the Dragons had fewer opportunities to take shots on Rutgers, they were more effective in their direct shots on goal, and this is what made the difference in the first half. Drexel’s goalkeeper sophomore Zoe Bennett had nine of her total 15 saves in the first half.

Moving into the second half, Rutgers made a comeback to bring the score to 11-10 still in favor of the Dragons. A 4-0 scoring run by the Dragons widened the lead again.

Rutgers scored one more goal in the second half, but the Dragons responded with three more goals to end the game 18-12.

The Dragons moved on to play Penn who came into the game undefeated through their first four games.

The Dragons took a commanding lead to start the game going 4-0 for scoring which stunned the Penn team. But Penn came back with a 5-0 run of their own to take the lead by one.

Sophomore Karson Harris had her fourth goal of the season when she tied the game at five. The first half ended with Penn leading by only one goal 7-6.

The two teams traded goals again at the start of the second half until Penn had another 4-0 run to take the lead 12-8. This ended up being enough for Penn to win the game even though the Dragons attempted to push until the end to tie the game.

Overall, Harris and senior Maggie Stetson had two games a piece. Six other Dragons had goals in the game, which shows a lot of depth to the team. Penn outshot Drexel throughout the game and were very effective, shooting 25 of their total 32 shots on goal.

Bennett had 13 saves against Penn, and for her efforts, she was named the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week. Her 15 saves against Rutgers was a career-high, which helped the Dragons take Drexel’s first win against a Big Ten conference team. For her five goals and eight points against Rutgers, Grady was named the Drexel School of Education Athlete of the Week.

The Dragons will host Villanova University March 9 at Vidas Field at 1 p.m. They will then travel to New York to play Manhattan College March 12. As of March 5, Villanova was 2-3 on the season. Last season against Villanova, the Dragons lost 20-12, so they will be looking to fight back this year for the win.

A lazy Friday afternoon at Drexel University was brightened up by the Philadelphia 76ers’ Ben Simmons as he was spotted hanging out with the Dragons at the Daskalakis Athletic Center March 1. The 22-year-old from Melbourne, Australia, had a double-double Feb. 28 against the Oklahoma City Thunder, which helped the Sixers finish with the win 108-104.

“Saw him walking in after talking to the reception desk. He initially started hooping with couple of us and shooting around with the few people in the gym,” Ritik Kapoor, a first year computer engineering student, said.

Simmons attended a Drexel basketball game Dec. 7 at the DAC, when the Dragons beat Robert Morris 82-69. He was pictured in the stands with Kendall Jenner and his Sixers teammate TJ McConnell.

“It was honestly a really cool experience to see him just hanging out with us. He’s an NBA all star and to see him be so casual with us Dragons was honestly a really special moment for so many of us,” Gokul Harikumar, an entrepreneurship major, said.

Some students weren’t as excited though.

“He was just sitting there, dribbling. I really didn’t care. I was just trying to hoop,” Tyrone Brown, a construction management major, said.

The 2018 NBA Rookie of the Year will be back in action March 2 as the Sixers play the Golden State Warriors. They currently stand 40-22.

Wynter scores 19 to upset Delaware at home

Freshman Camren Wynter (11) stepped up his game to score 19 points against Delaware to get the Dragons the win 68-60, Feb. 23 (Photograph courtesy of Drexel Athletics).

The Drexel University men’s basketball team, currently 13-16 overall and 7-9 in the Colonial Athletic Association conference, hosted the University of Delaware (16-13 overall, 8-8 CAA) Feb. 23. The Dragons came into the game looking to get revenge on the Blue Hens after losing 76-75 in a thrilling game on the road Jan. 26. Drexel would need contributions from their younger players in this one, as earlier in the week, senior guard Troy Harper suffered a season ending injury in practice. Harper was leading the Dragons in scoring this season with 15.8 points per game.

Fortunately, the Dragons had other plans this time around. They wasted no time in the first half, jumping out to a six-point lead before halftime with a score of 27-21. Sophomore James Butler and freshman Camren Wynter led the Dragons in scoring and played key roles in building the lead.

The Dragon faithful in the student section wasted no time trolling the University of Delaware. One fan had a sign that read “I got 99 problems and 34 points ain’t one” in reference to Drexel’s 34 point comeback victory against Delaware last season Feb. 22, 2018 which marked the biggest comeback in National Collegiate Athletic Association history.

In the second half of the game, there was an increase in offensive production from both sides.  Junior Alihan Demir and Wynter led the Dragons in scoring with 12 points each in the second half. The Blue Hens were led by sophomore Ryan Allen who had 16 points, including three shots from downtown. Redshirt senior Eric Carter also contributed 12 points in the second half.

While Delaware put up a good fight in the second half, only being outscored by two points, the Dragons’ lead was too much to overcome as Drexel pulled out the victory by a score of 68-60. One of the big reasons for the victory was the Dragons’ dominance in the paint. Drexel out-rebounded Delaware 39-24.The Dragons hope that Wynter will keep up his impressive play and lead the them in the final two home games of the season. Wynter stuffed the stat sheet against Delaware, finishing with 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Drexel hosted Hofstra University who currently sits in first place in the CAA standings with an impressive record of 23-6 overall and 13-3 in the conference. Hofstra is led by star senior Justin Wright-Foreman, who is averaging 26.6 points, four rebounds and three assists per game for the season. Wright-Foreman has been playing so well that scouts from around the league have been in attendance for his games.

The highlight of the game came from graduate student Trevor John who made his 98th three-pointer. This broke Dominick Mejia’s record from the 2005-06 season for the most made three-pointers in a season by a single player at 92. Unfortunately, the Dragons fell to Hofstra 80-77.

Drexel will now host Northeastern University March 2 at 4 p.m. If the College of William & Mary and Delaware both lose their remaining games, Drexel could move up to fourth place in the CAA standings before the conference tournament begins March 9.

DiMeo, Daly lead softball to success in Florida

Sophomore pitcher Brooklyn Daly (6) had a perfect game against Cornell University Feb. 23 at the Madeira Beach Spring Invitational in Florida (Photograph courtesy of Drexel Athletics).

The Drexel University softball team finished the final weekend of the Madeira Beach Spring Invitational Feb. 22-24 with a 4-1 record and 4-6 overall. The Dragons faced the University of Detroit Mercy, Siena College, Cornell University, South Dakota State University and Colgate University.

Against Detroit, the Dragons lost 1-0. The teams went scoreless through the first three innings. Detroit scored the only run of the game in the fourth from a double from Cou Gilbert which drove in an RBI for the run.

The Dragons decided to turn it around against Siena as they dominated in this game winning 10-3. The teams were tied after the first inning 1-1. Siena then scored two runs in the third inning, and these were their last two runs of the game. Drexel turned the focus to them as they scored three runs in the fifth, and six runs in the seventh to end the game. The Dragons earned these 10 runs off of just 14 hits.

The next day, Feb. 23, the Dragons went up against Cornell and blew them out of the park. After scoring five runs in just the first inning alone, it was clear who the dominating team was. The Dragons went on to score six more runs. Freshman pitcher Brooklyn Daly pitched a perfect game not allowing any hits.

The Dragons also played South Dakota the same day and continued their win streak. An incredible 14 runs were scored by the Dragons in the first inning. It almost seemed too easy. The game ended after only five innings as the Dragons won 20-5.

The final game of the invitational was played Feb. 24 against Colgate. The Dragons capped off this amazing weekend with one more win 5-3. The first two innings were scoreless as the teams were getting a feel for each other. But in the third inning, the Dragons scored four runs to take the lead. Colgate got within one run in the sixth inning, but Drexel sophomore Rielly Jo Swanson hit a single RBI that allowed junior Linda Rush to score.

Over the course of the invitational, freshman Kristi DiMeo earned the honor of Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week. She had four home runs and 13 total RBI. She hit 10 for 18 which is a huge 0.556 average. For her shutout win against Cornell, Daly was named CAA Pitcher of the Week.

The Dragons will now compete at the Hampton Blue and White Classic in Virginia March 8-10. They will face the University of Albany and Norfolk State University March 8, Albany again and then Hampton University March 9, and then they will finish off the Classic against South Carolina State University March 10.

Wrestling: Kropman takes exciting win on spirit night

Though a few members were outstanding against Princeton and Old Dominion, the wrestling team fell just short of the wins Feb. 22 and 24 (Photograph courtesy of Drexel Athletics).

It was an emotional weekend for the Drexel University wrestling team, as the squad capped off their regular season with back to back dual meets against Princeton University and Old Dominion University. Drexel hosted both meets at the Daskalakis Athletic Center for the Dragons’ spirit night Feb. 22 and senior day Feb. 24. Though the Dragons saw some of their squad members put on fantastic performances, they couldn’t get a win in either of the contests, falling 27-13 to Princeton and 23-12 to Old Dominion. However, these losses weren’t demonstrative of the overall offensive outputs Drexel had in both matches.

Redshirt senior Joey Goodhart opened up the spirit night festivities against Princeton at heavyweight, facing Princeton sophomore Kendall Elfstrum and winning a 12-2 majority decision in front of a roaring home crowd.

Drexel was unable to capitalize on their lead, dropping three of their matchups at 125, 133 and 141 pounds.

The highlight of the night for Drexel came in the 149-pound matchup when redshirt sophomore Parker Kropman took to the mats against Princeton junior Matthew Kolodzik, ranked the No. 2 wrestler in the country in the weight category (by FloWrestling as of Feb. 18). Though the odds were severely stacked against him, Kropman surprised everyone in the hall, edging out a 3-1 win to the delight of the Drexel crowd.

As stunning as the surprise win was, Drexel could not chain two wins in a row, alternating wins and losses for the remainder of the match. Immediately following Kropman was sophomore Evan Barczak at 157 pounds, who could not exact revenge on Princeton freshman Quincy Monday, who got the better of Barczak for the second time this season. Barczak suffered a pin loss a little under two minutes into the match.

Other wrestlers who won on spirit night were junior Ebed Jarrell at 165 pounds and freshman Anthony Walters at 184 pounds.

Drexel celebrated its seniors two days later by acknowledging the outgoing Willie Davis, Stephen Loiseau and Goodhart in a small ceremony before the mat.

Drexel switched between wins and losses for the first six matches in row, with the two competing seniors, Goodhart and Loiseau, going onto their home mat for the last time.

Both of their matches went down to the wire, with Goodhart winning the heavyweight match 2-1. Loiseau gave a rousing performance, and even in the wake of his 5-4 defeat, he received applause from the entire crowd.

Walters and Jarrell repeated as winners against Old Dominion, adding onto their wins against Princeton. Kropman also made it into the winner’s column, securing a win late into the meet over Old Dominion’s redshirt sophomore Kevin Budock.

For his two wins during the weekend, and in particular for his shock win over Kolodzik, Kropman was named Drexel University’s School of Education Athlete of the Week. With their regular season concluded, Drexel will now look to compete at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association championships beginning March 8. Drexel will send four nationally ranked wrestlers to the tournament: Loiseau, Goodhart, Jarrell and Kropman.

Swimming and diving win seven gold at CAA champs

The swimming and diving team brought home seven gold medals from the Colonial Athletic Association championships Feb. 20-23 (Photograph courtesy of Drexel Athletics).

The Drexel University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed at the Colonial Athletic Association conference championships Feb. 20-23. The teams started off strong after the first day of competition both ending in first place in the points standings but the final days of competition left the women’s team in fourth place overall and the men in second place. The teams won seven gold medals this year, six from swimming events and junior Anthony Musciano defended his title in the 1-meter dive for the diving team.

Day one featured highlights from Musciano and the women’s 200-yard medley relay team. Musciano edged out sophomore Will Canny from Towson University in the men’s 1-meter dive by a final score of 287.60, which was 7.5 points ahead of Canny. The women’s relay team which included junior Alexa Kutch, sophomore Gabrielle Rudy and juniors Hollie Hopf and the anchor Alicia Diaz finished ahead of the College of William & Mary by 0.11 seconds.

The men’s 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Kiran Richardson, senior Ralph Cannarozzi III and freshmen Paris Raptis and John Scully finished third in the event. The men’s 800-yard freestyle relay also finished third. Junior Jason Arthur swam the first leg, followed by senior Patrick Cobb, freshman Kevin Spear and senior Luke Hanner.

At the end of day one, the Drexel women’s team was tied with William & Mary and James Madison University at 68 points while the men were out in front with 109 points, which was 10 points ahead of second place Towson.

On day two, Cobb defended his title in the men’s 500-yard free besting senior Carter Kale from William & Mary by 0.78 seconds. In the women’s 200-yard individual medley, senior April Forsthoffer just missed the standings finishing just 0.44 seconds behind third place. In the men’s 200-yard IM, Arthur won the bronze medal and also posted a National Collegiate Athletic Association B qualifying time with a time of 1:46.73.

The men’s 200-yard free relay team of Richardson, Arthur, freshman Alex Flynn and Scully placed third in the event. The winners of the event, the team from William & Mary, set a new CAA meet record.

After day two, the women’s team fell to sixth place in the standings as JMU had taken a giant leap to lead overall by more than 50 points. The men’s team was trailing in second to William & Mary by 76 points.

On day three, 10 Dragons were able to get on the podium. Musciano started off with a silver medal finish behind Canny in the men’s 3-meter dive. Canny finished with an NCAA A qualifying score. In the women’s 400-yard IM, Forsthoffer finished with a bronze medal only 0.04 seconds behind second place.

In the men’s 100-yard butterfly, Raptis finished in third place with a time of 47.48 which was just 0.05 seconds from the NCAA B qualifying time. In the women’s 100-yard breaststroke, Rudy also placed third with a time of 1:02.03.

The crowd roared during the men’s 100-yard breast as Cannarozzi tied for second place with sophomore Devin McNulty from William & Mary with a time of 54.41 which was a one-hundredth of a second off first place finisher sophomore Gianmichael D’Alessandro from UNCW.

The highlight of the day came from Kutch who won the women’s 100-yard backstroke for the third year in a row. She jumped ahead of the field right off the start and held the lead to the end. In the men’s 100-yard back, Arthur earned a silver medal behind William & Mary’s Colin Demers.

The women’s 400-yard medley relay team also brought home gold ahead of Towson by 0.48 seconds. Kutch started things off, followed by Rudy, senior Charlotte Myers and anchor Diaz. The men’s 400-yard medley relay team of Arthur, Cannarozzi, Raptis and Richardson got second place.

After day three, the women’s team had moved up to fifth place in the standings, and William & Mary had moved ahead of JMU for first place by two points. The men’s team maintained their standing in second place, but were now more than 100 points behind William & Mary going into the final day of competition.

On the fourth and final day, Kutch defended her title in the women’s 200-yard back for the third year in a row with at time of 1:55.43. She had previously set a meet and CAA all-time record last season. Arthur also won the men’s 200-yard back for the third consecutive year and also swam a NCAA B time.

Freshman Megan Sicinski had her CAA debut and swam to a silver medal in the women’s 200-yard breast with a time of 2:16.87. Raptis also claimed a silver medal in the men’s 200-yard fly and qualify with an NCAA B cut time.

Though the women finished in fourth and the men finished in second, the women had placed fifth the previous year while the men had also finished second in 2018. This meet showed great improvement for the team as a whole, and it was great to see Kutch and Arthur defend their titles on the final day of competition. For her two golds, Kutch was named Drexel’s School of Education Athlete of the Week.

The Dragons that qualified to the Division I NCAA Championships will travel to Austin, Texas, for the final meet of the season.

Softball has a rough start to the 2019 season in Florida

Junior Hannah Walker (21) hit her first triple of the 2019 season at the Madeira Beach Spring Invitational Feb. 16 against Belmont University (Photograph courtesy of Ryan Swanson).

The Drexel University softball team had a bit of a rocky season last year. With a final record of 21-29-2, the Dragons looked to bounce back this year. In the offseason, they added five new players to the team, all of whom are from local high schools. This local talent may be the boost the team needs to dominate this season.

To start their season, the softball team competed in the first weekend of the Madeira Beach Spring Invitational in Florida Feb. 15-17. Multiple teams from all across the country competed in this event. Drexel’s first match was against the University of Akron. This was a momentous game as two Drexel players, junior Linda Rush and sophomore Kristi DiMeo, scored their first home runs. Akron started off the game with a three run lead in the first inning, but DiMeo’s two-run home run closed that gap to one. In the  fifth inning, Rush made her contribution with another two-run home run. However, these were the only runs they would score in the game, as they lost 8-4.

Their next game was against the College of the Holy Cross. This game was not as momentous as the first. The Dragons failed to score a run in the game, while the Crusaders took the match, 6-0.

Next up was South Dakota State University, where the Dragons really got some traction. Rush hit the 30th home run of her career, which broke the Drexel softball career home run record. This two-run home run cut South Dakota’s lead in half, as they scored four runs beforehand. To add to this, both DiMeo and Rush hit home runs later in the game to give Drexel an 8-7 lead. However, South Dakota responded with two home runs of their own and defeated the Dragons, 11-8.

Next in the tournament was Belmont University, which ended up being a tough opponent for the Dragons. Junior Hannah Walker hit her first triple of the season to bring in a run for Drexel. However, that was all the Dragons could muster up as Belmont had a nine-run sixth inning to secure their victory over the Dragons, 16-1.

In their next game against Butler University, the Dragons had a two-run lead until the seventh inning. A single from sophomore Reilly Jo Swanson brought in two runs. But Butler had other plans as they scored three runs in the the seventh inning to bring them to a 3-2 lead. Drexel got a few opportunities to come back but failed to do so, and the Dragons lost, 3-2.

The Dragons will continue this tournament with matches against the University of Detroit Mercy, Siena College, Cornell University, South Dakota State again and Colgate University Feb. 22-24. Drexel will have to battle hard to come back from a 0-5 deficit, but they have the potential to do so in the coming games.

Women’s lacrosse delivers a win to new head coach

Junior Lucy Schneidereith (28) had five goals in the win against Iona College Feb. 16 and every shot was right on target flying past the goalie (Photograph courtesy of Greg Carroccio).

The Drexel University women’s lacrosse team began their 2019 season with a tough matchup against Johns Hopkins University Feb. 10. Johns Hopkins’s defense was definitely a factor in this game’s outcome, as they held the Dragons to only 17 shots throughout the game with only six shots in the second period. With the help of this defense, Johns Hopkins was able to get their offense possession and control the game from start to finish. Johns Hopkins took more than double the shots than the Dragons (39 total.) Johns Hopkins won by a final score of 17-9.

After the loss in their season opener, the Dragons traveled to New Rochelle, New York, to play Iona College. Here, they defeated Iona 11-7, which gave the team and the new head coach Jill Batcheller the first win of the season.

Iona came into the game having already lost their first two games of the season.

The Dragons came out firing at the start of the first half. Junior Courtney Dietzel scored the first goal of the game. Against Johns Hopkins, Dietzel had two goals. Dietzel scored 16 total goals during the 2018 season, and in this game against Iona alone, she scored a hat trick. Her total is already five goals on the season through just the first two games.

Throughout the first half of the game against Iona, the teams tied the score twice, but the Dragons were able to hold control of the game and held Iona scoreless for the last 12 minutes before halftime. The Dragons ended the first half on a 3-0 scoring run to lead 5-2. Junior Lucy Schneidereith was the powerhouse of this scoring run as all three goals were from her, giving her a hat trick already in the first half alone.

Moving into the second half, the Dragons continued their scoring run going 5-0 before Iona finally found the net past Drexel goalkeeper sophomore Zoe Bennett with 20:44 left to play. However, Iona was still behind the Dragons 7-3.

The Dragons increased their lead to five with a goal off a free position shot by sophomore Colleen Grady. After a draw control by sophomore Jamie Schneidereith, Dietzel received a pass from Grady to give her another goal on the day. With 14:30 left to play, the Dragons had a solid lead 9-4.

The Dragons’ defense held strong as there was no glimpse of Iona attempting a comeback against the Dragons. A final goal by Iona’s Christine Gironda left the score at 11-7 in Drexel’s favor as the clock ran out.

Bennett had 13 saves on the day. Lucy Schneidereith led the Dragons with five goals and one assist. Dietzel followed her with her hat trick. Grady dished out three assists as well as her one goal in the second half.

The Dragons will now travel to Washington, D.C. to play Georgetown University Feb. 23. Georgetown is currently 2-0 through their first two matchups of the season against Saint Joseph’s University Feb. 9 and Towson University Feb. 16. This will be a great game for the Dragons, as Georgetown is currently ranked 19th in the nation.

Wrestling looks ahead to spirit night after two more losses

The Drexel University wrestling team has fallen short to the last three EIWA competitors this season. Despite this, redshirt senior Stephen Loiseau (above) remains in the top-20 in the nation at 197 (Photograph by Anna Sahkul for The Triangle).

At this point in their season, the Drexel University men’s wrestling team has been unable to regain the positive momentum they enjoyed at the start. They are currently on a five-match losing streak and hold a 4-9 record across all competitions.

The Dragons competed twice during the week, first against Binghamton University Feb. 10 and then played hosts to California Baptist University Feb. 16 at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Drexel fell in both dual meets: 20-21 to Binghamton and 16-19 to Cal Baptist.

During the Binghamton match, the Dragons were able to go 5-5 in their matches, putting together one of their better overall team performance in a dual meet throughout the whole season. The match began with the 141-pounders going up against each other, as junior Nick Widmann shared the mat with Binghamton junior Anthony Sparacio. Widmann would drop the opener 14-4 to give Binghamton a four-point lead.

Luckily for Drexel, they would go on to pick up wins at the next three weight classes. Redshirt sophomore Parker Kropman began the win streak at 149 pounds with a 7-2 decision over Binghamton redshirt junior Frankie Garcia. Soon after, sophomore Evan Barczak successfully earned a shutout against Binghamton freshman Christopher Barker at 157 pounds, while the No. 15 nationally ranked 165-pounder junior Ebed Jarrell secured the first pin of the night for the Dragons. The victory was Jarrell’s 10th win and eighth pin of the season. Due to the surge of offense by the Dragons, Drexel regained the lead by eight points.

Drexel would not hold onto their newly found lead, as sophomore Trevor Elfvin and freshman Anthony Walters would each take a loss in their respective weight classes of 174 and 184 pounds.

As they’ve had to do all too often this season, the Drexel heavyweights took to the mats to help the Dragons lessen the point gap between their opponents. While redshirt seniors Stephen Loiseau and Joey Goodhart usually wrestle at the tail end of dual meets, this time they had a chance to have any points scored make a difference in the outcome of the meet.

Loiseau made quick work of his opponent at 197 pounds, taking the technical fall nod over Binghamton redshirt sophomore Alex Melikian.

Joey Goodhart put the overall score at 20-12 with his win at heavyweight over Binghamton redshirt freshman Joe Doyle. The win kept Goodhart as the most winning grappler on the Drexel squad this season. The lightest weights closed out the meet with freshmen Antonio Mininno and redshirt Alex Salas competing at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Each would suffer a loss, with Salas’s defeat via pin giving Binghamton the match by just one point.

Drexel returned to Philadelphia for their third home match of the season against Cal Baptist Feb. 16.

Junior Owen Brooks had a start at 174 pounds where he took a majority decision loss to Cal Baptist junior Bryce Buckley, while Anthony Walters’ dropped contest at 184 pounds to Cal Baptist redshirt sophomore Garrett Strang gave the Lancers a 7-0 advantage.

Once again, Loiseau and Goodhart had early matches, with both putting on dominant performances at the heavier weights. Loiseau enjoyed his second technical fall win in as many matches while Goodheart took a decision to put Drexel back in the fray at 8-7.

Unfortunately for Drexel, the Dragons went winless in their next four, seeing the Lancers go up 19-8. The efforts of Barczak and Jarrell at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively, weren’t enough to completely lessen the point deficit, and Cal Baptist ended the day ensuring Drexel’s losing streak stays alive.

The Dragons’ next appearance will be a league contest at home against the Princeton University Tigers Feb. 22. The Tigers are currently 8-6 overall on the season on a two-game win streak. This match will be the annual Spirit Night at the DAC. Many of the other Drexel Division I athletic teams will be in attendance, and the athletic department awards prizes to the most spirited team as well as the team with the highest percentage of players at the match. This will be a great opportunity for the Dragons to face Princeton, a fellow Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association rival, before progressing on to the EIWA championships.

Women’s basketball on fire with 10 straight wins

Freshman Keishana Washington (1) scored a season-high and career-high 16 points against Northeastern University Feb. 17 on the way to the win (Photograph by Isabella Mancini for The Triangle).

The Drexel University women’s basketball team has been on fire for the past few weeks of Colonial Athletic Association conference play. The team has not lost a game since Jan. 6 against James Madison University. They have catapulted themselves to second place in the CAA standings, just behind JMU. Currently, the Dragons have won 10 straight games to give them an 18-5 record overall on the season and 10-2 in the CAA.

The Dragons’ last two games were against Hofstra University Feb. 15 and Northeastern University Feb. 17 at home in the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

First up against Hofstra, the Dragons almost tripled the number of points Hofstra put up in the first quarter. Junior Bailey Greenberg had nine of the Dragons’ 14 points in the first quarter, while Hofstra was only able to put up five points total.

By the end of the second quarter, the Dragons had increased their lead to 11 points ahead of Hofstra. Junior Niki Metzel came alive in this quarter for the Dragons, putting up six of their 13 points in the quarter. Two of Metzel’s three made shots were in the paint.

The lead was 22 points at the end of the third quarter. Another Dragon took over in scoring in the third quarter, freshman Keishana Washington. The Dragons were able to hold Hofstra to only six points in the third quarter. Washington had eight of her 10 total points in the game in the third quarter. Also contributing were sophomore Hannah Nihill and Greenberg to the offense.

In the fourth quarter, it was pretty clear that the Dragons were going to pull this one off for their ninth straight win. By the end, the Dragons maintained the lead, winning 62-39.

A major factor in the win for the Dragons was again their fantastic defense, one of the best in the nation. In the game against Hofstra, the Dragons were able to score 24 of their total points off turnovers. Showing depth in the team, the Dragons’ bench put up 17 points in the game.

Nine Drexel players scored at least two points in the game. Greenberg led the team with a total of 15 points and seven rebounds. Washington followed her with 10 points, then Nihill, who had nine points as well as nine assists.
