The best looks from the Golden Globes

Upcoming “it” girl Alicia Vikander showed up to the Golden Globes red carpet in a white Louis Vuitton number. The dress was flattering and elegant on the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress nominee. It featured pleating at the skirt and a frilly trim at the top. Vikander, who stars in “The Danish Girl” and “Ex-Machina”, is a favorite for this awards season with her two big movies, and is grabbing the attention of fashion critics quickly.

“Game of Thrones” icon Emilia Clarke looked like the queen in Valentino Haute Couture. Her gown was indescribably beautiful. Clarke wore a black semi-sheer dress that covered the majority of her body, but made heads turn. Of course the showstopper of this piece was an embellished cape to take the drama to another level.

Jennifer Lawrence winning Best Performance by an Actress in “Joy” was not her only victorious moment at the Golden Globes. Lawrence looked fierce in a red Christian Dior couture gown, that did nothing but flatter the sought after star. She even topped it off with a massive diamond collar by Chopard. The slim cutouts really accentuated her amazing physique and added just the right amount of edge.

Zendaya has been an emerging icon in the fashion industry, and on the radar since her standout Fausto Puglisi dress at last year’s Met Gala. This time, she wowed us with a crimson tiered dress by Marchesa. The young star looked confident and comfortable in the daring gown, which was sleeveless and featured a deep V plunge.

Although simple and subtle, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s gown was a major favorite on the carpet. The sparkly beige Atelier Versace dress cinched slightly at the waist, and lightly pleated material made the bottom of the dress flow elegantly across the carpet. With minimal jewelry, she let her skintone and hair color be accentuated by the color of the dress.

Wiz Khalifa has been around for awhile, but he’s up and coming in the fashion world. The artist is 6’4” and has a very slim frame, meaning runway clothes are practically made for him. Khalifa has used this to his advantage while developing his newly found style.

For his Best Original Song nomination, Khalifa wore a Thom Browne bespoke suit that featured ankle length trousers and a bird printed tie, paired with Gucci slippers to complete the look.

Gigi Hadid is everywhere. You may recognize her from various magazine covers or on Taylor Swift’s Instagram. But who exactly is she?

Gigi Hadid, born Jelena Noura Hadid is a 20-year-old American model taking over the fashion world by storm. With her flawless complexion, undeniably good genes and a soaring height of five foot, ten inches tall, it seems like the modeling industry is the perfect place for Hadid.

Hadid was discovered at age two by Guess designer and co-founder Paul Marciano, and she began modeling for Baby Guess. After taking a long break to focus on school, she remerged into the modeling scene in 2012 when she starred in Guess’ fall/winter advertisement campaign. Over the past three years, Hadid has undeniably made a name for herself. She made her New York Fashion Week debut just last year, walking in Desigual’s Fall/Winter 2014 show. Since then, Hadid has walked the runway for many renowned designers such as Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Dolce & Gabbana, Balmain, Max Mara and Chanel.

Hadid is a very versatile model and has been able to star in not only high fashion editorials, but also in ad campaigns. The young model has covered various international magazines including Vogue Espana, CR Fashion Book, Teen Vogue, V Magazine, Vogue Brasil and most recently on the cover of W Magazine’s September issue. She has also fronted many advertisement campaigns for brands including Max Mara, Tom Ford, Topshop and Balmain. Hadid is also currently the face of the makeup and cosmetics company Maybelline.

Her mother, Yolanda Foster, is a former model and a member of the reality television show Real Housewife of Beverly Hills. Hadid has made a few appearances on the television show as Yolanda’s daughter aspiring to become a model, but it is safe to say that Hadid has definitely made her mark in the fashion industry.

As modeling seems to run in the Hadid family, Hadid’s sister Bella is also aspiring to become a model herself. The sister duo has modeled together on various shoots including Balmain’s fall/winter 2015 campaign and the cover of V Magazine’s fall preview issue.

When Hadid is not modeling around the world, the California-born model can be spotted in skinny jeans and a crop top while shopping around Beverly Hills. You may also spot Hadid with her group of friends made up of A-list celebrities and models including Taylor Swift, Karlie Kloss, Cara Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn and Kendall Jenner. Hadid has also made appearances alongside her friends in Taylor Swift’s music video Bad Blood.

Gigi has cemented her spot as one of the most in-demand models and with her career just starting, we can only try to imagine how far she will go.

Beauty How To: Concealer

Okay, so there is no one correct way when it comes to your personal look, but there can be ways to improve what you already know! We all have those days where we didn’t get enough sleep and our eyes really show it. The go to product for under eye problems is of course concealer, but concealer is much more than that. By applying your concealer using the following method, you can add even more brightness and glow to your look!

1. Apply foundation first! Otherwise, you’ll blend your concealer away.

2. Take a concealer (about 1-2 shades lighter than your foundation) and apply it in the shape of an upside down triangle, angling it down and towards your nose.

3. Blend in with your favorite brush or just use your fingers!

4. Continue your makeup routine as you normally would and look as fabulous as usual!

Etienne Maurice, senior, film and video major

The Triangle: What are some of your favorite places to shop?

Etienne Maurice: Most of the pieces from my closet come from Asos, Zara and Topman. You can’t beat their prices — especially when they’re on sale — they fit well and they have a wide variety of dope items that last more than two seasons.

The Triangle: What are your essentials for surviving the winter season?

Etienne Maurice: If I didn’t have my wool coat or my parka jacket in the winter, I’d be depressed … and cold. I’m also really big on beanies and fur pilot hats to keep your ears warm.

The Triangle: What trends are you looking forward to sporting for spring?

Etienne Maurice: I try not to follow trends, but I really can’t wait to wear more of my sneakers come spring and summer time. It’s a bummer always having to wear boots in the winter so your toes don’t freeze or to prevent you from slipping on frozen sidewalks … no bueno.

The Triangle: What are a few must-have pieces in your wardrobe?

Etienne Maurice: Being from Los Angeles, I faithfully wear an assortment of flannel shirts. Also, this past year, I’ve been a big fan of wearing my grandfather’s old wool felt hats he always used to rock. I used to think they were funny looking when I’d see Pharrell and other celebs wear them, but when I jokingly tried them on, I was like, “Wait a minute … this actually looks pretty fly on my head!”

The Triangle: How would you describe your style?

Etienne Maurice: To be honest, my style varies from time to time. You might see me one day looking really bumpy in some Nike SBs and low-crotch sweats, and the next day I could stunt in some Chelsea boots and wax denim. I enjoy dressing up and down. I guess it all just depends on how I’m feeling that day.

On Nov. 2, the E! Network premiered their new reality competition series, House of DVF, where eight young hopeful contestants were brought to New York City to compete for the coveted position as Diane von Furstenberg’s Global Brand Ambassador. Among these hopefuls was Drexel’s very own, Amanda Schauer.

Amanda Schauer is a senior majoring in design and merchandising. Over her three co-ops, Amanda has completed internships at Michael Kors, Nanette Lepore and Lilly Pulitzer. She is a member of the Phi Mu sorority, where one of her sisters informed her about the opportunity to work for one of the fashion industry’s most established and influential designers, Diane von Furstenberg. Furstenberg is the president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, creator of the iconic wrap dress and a former princess. The opportunity to become a part of the DVF team is a once in a lifetime chance that most people can only dream of.

While on the reality television series, the contestants showcased their abilities throughout the show by arranging photo shoots, designing apparel for DVF and styling celebrities and models for high profile events.

During the competition, Amanda was a strong contestant, as she was able to make it all the way to the finale where she worked backstage to help organize DVF’s New York Fashion Week show. We caught up with the talented runner-up and got all the details of her one-in-a-million opportunity.

The Triangle: What was the most significant thing you learned during the show?

Amanda Schauer: Definitely to always be confident in yourself and your opinions. Throughout this show, I really had to stand up for myself and my opinions and a lot of times I would be intimidated by the other girls and hold them in. I learned that whatever it is you want to say, just speak up and say it with confidence.

TT: What was it like getting to work so closely with Diane and her team?

AS: It wasn’t just Diane that was so amazing to work with; it was her entire team as well. They’re all just so knowledgeable and so smart. Diane can understand people so quickly and working with her was so eye-opening. She just gets people and can give you the greatest advice within five minutes of talking to you. It was amazing, there’s really no other word to describe it.

TT: What was it like to be in such a competitive environment?

AS: That was the most stressful part of the show. The producers would make you talk about what’s on your mind and what’s bothering you, whereas I would normally just bite my tongue. I wanted to be friends with the girls, but we were in such a competitive environment so it was hard not to get a little feisty with each other.

TT: There were a few tense moments. When some of the girls, like Brittany and Kier, tried attacking you and questioned your abilities, how did you remain so graceful?

AS: I just reminded myself that [they] are not the ones who are deciding my future and I don’t have anything to prove to them. I’m not very confrontational so [I knew] I wasn’t going to get into it with those girls. I know how they perceive me doesn’t really matter because they’re not making the decision at the end of the day.

TT: How did you feel about having cameras follow you around all the time?

AS: It was definitely hard to get used to but after a while I got to know the crew and it became less about the cameras watching me as opposed to the crew. I was more comfortable with that because I knew them and we all became friends. Sometimes when I would go to bed at night I would fix my posture because I couldn’t get out of the mindset that I was being watched

TT: After you finished the competition, did you see any changes in yourself or your views?

AS: This competition made me see that experience is great but having a positive attitude and good personality will take you farther. That’s a trait I’m proud of and want to make sure I always carry in the corporate world.

TT: What advice would you give to other students pursuing a career in the fashion industry

AS: Take any opportunity you are given because it can’t hurt, it will only help. I was so terrified to go on a reality show because I could embarrass myself and at the end of the day, I’m so happy I did it and I would never take it back.

Editor’s Note: Amanda is finishing up her senior year and will graduate in June. After graduating, she plans on heading to New York to establish her career in the fashion industry. With the help of the DVF team, who have been more than willing to assist her, Amanda hopes to find a great job and continue to grow and learn from her experiences.

Students show work at Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters wrapped up its College Marketplace event at its store on The University of Pennsylvania’s campus Oct. 24. Throughout the month of October, Urban Outfitters welcomed local students at 10 different campus store locations to showcase their work to the community. This event gave them an opportunity to set up their own pop-up shops in the store.

College Marketplace was created to support and promote young artists, entrepreneurs and branches from the Dreamers and Doers series on the Urban Outfitters blog. Dreamers and Doers is a portion of the U.O. blog crafted to spotlight those doing something noteworthy. The series consists of interviews and stories about young models, designers and innovators who are starting something new and creative. One of the participants from College Marketplace will be selected to have their items sold in one of Urban Outfitters’ storefronts. U.O. has also given the opportunity to some of those who have been featured on the Dreamers and Doers blog to sell their items on the retailer’s website. The idea behind creating Dreamers and Doers, as stated on its website, is to “stand behind those taking steps towards something new.”

During the event, artists were able to display their collection on tables that had been set up at the front of the store. As shoppers walked in, their attention was quickly drawn to these stands. Interested customers had the opportunity to talk to the artists, learn about their brands and purchase their designs. The items included clothing, glassware and a variety of accessories. Among the four labels selected to show their work at the event, three were founded or co-founded by Drexel students.

UO-1-(web)

Jacqueline Vasconcellos, a junior design and merchandising major, along with her co-creator Emily Schnall (from the Rhode Island School of Design), was one of the Drexel students chosen to show her work. Their collections included crystal pendants and earrings as well as upcycled vintage clothing pieces. “We get inspired by time specific pockets of pop culture, like ’80s punk or ’90s grunge,” Emily said when describing the vibe of the collection.

UO-Jackie-(web)

Senior graphic design and merchandising major Julie Parlade was also displaying her brand, Daphne. The collection consists of an array of handmade jewelry with influences drawn from the story of Daphne in Greek mythology, astronomy, alchemy and mythical legends. When asked why events such as College Marketplace are so important to young artists, Julie replied, “This is an amazing opportunity for [public relations]. I couldn’t get my brand out there as well without chances like this.”

UO-3-(web)Nicholas Kramer, a junior graphic design major, was there to represent False Reality, a brand he is co-founded. Pieces shown included bracelets made from various materials, such as bone from Indonesia, wood from South America and jasper from India. “We made it our mission to make a unique collection with materials from all over the world. We’re trying to tell stories from other countries and cultures through our designs,” Nicholas said about of the brand.

Events like Urban Outfitter’s College Marketplace give the local community a chance to purchase items from young artists as well as learn more about the artists themselves and their brands. It creates great exposure for these young designers as well as valuable opportunities to interact face to face with their customers. Anyone who is starting a label knows how difficult it is to get the name out there, and having well known companies like Urban Outfitters support striving artists can make a big difference in their journeys. Be sure to support and check out these talented students!
