Jessica Jurg of the University of Hartford women’s soccer team is a wonderful young talent that the team is very fortunate to have.
Jurg is the starting goalkeeper for the team and has been seeing playing time since her freshman year at the university.
Since starting, she has been phenomenal for the team.
This should be of no surprise though because even before attending the University of Hartford she was a force not to be dealt with.
Jessica Jurg reigns from Annen, The Netherlands and before Hartford she started playing soccer with the club VV Annen.
She then played two seasons for SC Heerenveen and began playing with PEC Zwolle at the age of 16.
Jurg actually made her debut in the highest women’s league in the Netherlands at the age of 15, being the youngest goalkeeper to do so.
She was then recruited to the University of Hartford and once she got her chance, their was no turning back for her.
During her freshman year in 2013, Jurg was named to the America East All-Rookie Team, started the final 16 games of the season in goal, and led the America East in goals against average (0.73) and shutouts (8).
Her 0.73 goals-against average was also 32 best in the nation.
She helped Hartford earn a shut out percentage of .500 which was 30 in the country.
Jurg ranked third in the conference in save percentage with a very impressive .818, made 54 saves, conceded only 12 goals and closed out her debut season with an overall record of 10-5-1.
She also recorded a career-high in saves with seven to help the team cruise to a 2-0 shutout of Binghamton (Oct. 17) and lastly to top it all off she was named to the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll for achieving a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
Keep in mind; this was only her freshman year, so hopefully she would only get better.
Well, she did. During the 2014 season in her sophomore year, Jurg Started and played in the final 13 games of the season, combined to concede just eight goals, which was the second-best goals-against average in the America East (0.63) during that season.
That 0.63 goals-against average ranked 14 among the nation’s Division I Goalkeepers.
Jessica Jurg helped the Lady Hawks shutout six opponents, including three-straight America East squads.
During that shutout streak, which included clean slates against Binghamton (Oct. 9), New Hampshire (Oct. 12), and Maine (Oct. 16), Hartford strung together 326:25 minutes of scoreless soccer with Jurg playing at the goalie position.
On top of everything else, Jurg ranked fourth in the America East in shutouts and fourth in shutouts per game with another impressive average of 0.46.
She stopped 45 shots; her .849 save percentage was the second-highest mark in the conference and the 28-best in the nation.
Once again she was named to the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll for achieving a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
Now for her third season as a junior, her dominance has not stopped.
Jessica Jurg has started and played in all 14 games.
In those 14 games, she has helped the team have seven shutouts.
Not only has she helped the team record seven shutouts on the season, she has not led up more than one goal in either game the Lady Hawks have won, loss, or tied.
Jessica Jurg just recently won an accolade for America East Player of the Week.
Jurg, earned her first career weekly award from the America East after shutting out a pair of league opponents last week.
She began her week by matching a season-high in saves (5) in Thursday’s shutout victory against the Seawolves.
Three days later, Jurg collected her conference-leading seventh shutout of the season after recording three saves at Binghamton.
Jurg enters the third week of America East action as the league’s leader in goals-against average (0.40), save percentage (.875) and shutouts per game (0.58).
On her career, she has posted 21 clean sheets which is very impressive for someone who has not started all the games in her career.
This young talent is a star on and off the field and Hartford is very fortunate to be able to have her play and help lead this team to victories.
Jessica Jurg hopefully will continue to bll out and play well for the University of Hartford for the remainder of her junior yer and all of senior year.
She has proven time and time again that she is a pivotal player to this team and with her help shutting out teams, they will continue to be a dominant team.
