Philly Science Festival Astronomy Night

Grab a blanket and prepare to tour the cosmos. Professional and amateur astronomers will bring out their telescopes to show locals the wonders of the night sky. More than 20 venues in and around Philadelphia — from universities to community centers, wildlife refuges to cemeteries — will host star parties. The festivities start at 6 p.m. this year, giving families the chance to do some sun gazing.

New Exhibit at Institute of Contemporary Art

Karla Black constructs large-scale, site-specific sculptures using amorphous yet everyday materials — from dirt, chalk and dough to the powders, sprays and gooey substances we use to coat our bodies. Her work reacts to the light and space of each site with a sense of play and indeterminacy. In forms that always seem to be on the brink of collapse, the unremarkable and commonplace are rendered transcendent through size and scale, grand abstractions infused with a sense of entropy.

Tides of Freedom Exhibit at Seaport Museum

This new exhibit features recently uncovered artifacts from the Museum’s collection, gripping first-person accounts and interactive elements, providing visitors with opportunities for discovery and communication. Using four key moments in Philadelphia’s history representing the themes of enslavement, emancipation, Jim Crow and civil rights, Tides of Freedom urges visitors both to bear witness to a story central to Philadelphia and American history and to think about the meaning of “freedom” both historically and in today’s world. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage in an ongoing discussion via social media at several points in the exhibition.

Independence Seaport Museum, 211 S. Christopher Columbus Blvd.

Philly Food Festival returns

Night Market Philadelphia is the city’s premier street food festival, a roving food event spotlighting Philly’s best ethnic and regional restaurants and food trucks. Inspired by Asia’s lively outdoor markets, our events celebrate up-and-coming neighborhoods and showcase Philadelphia’s diverse food and drinks and vibrant arts and culture scene. The first Night Market took place in East Passyunk in 2010. In 2011 and 2012 The Food Trust has hosted another seven Night Markets, attracting well over 100,000 attendees and 300 food vendors to neighborhoods across the city, including University City, Northern Liberties, Washington Avenue, Mount Airy and Chinatown, and attracting local and national attention to Philadelphia’s food scene.
