6 protesters arrested at University Board of Regents meeting

Six students were arrested during a protest over proposed University of Minnesota tuition increases at a Friday Board of Regents meeting.

Nearly 30 demonstrators attended the meeting to protest the Twin Cities campus tuition hikes included in University President Eric Kaler’s 2017 operating budget.

In the end, the demonstrators failed to persuade regents to reject Kaler's proposed budget.

Minnesota campus officials discuss sexual violence, prevention

Minnesota campus officials and sexual assault advocacy groups met Thursday to discuss ways to address sexual violence on college campuses.

With colleges and universities under enormous pressure to adequately address sexual violence on campus, representatives from 57 institutions statewide — including the University of Minnesota — gathered for the start of a two-day campus sexual violence prevention summit to listen to guest speakers and participate in skills-based workshops. The event is the first of its kind.

Beth Goetz takes job at University of Connecticut

Former Gophers interim athletics director Beth Goetz — who held the position from Aug. to May — accepted a job as the University of Connecticut’s chief operating officer for athletics.

Late last year, the Gophers' AD Norwood Teague resigned amid allegations of sexual harassment. Goetz was appointed as the interim AD following Teague’s resignation in Aug.

U wrestling coach put on leave

University of Minnesota wrestling head coach J Robinson has been put on paid administrative leave, athletics director Mark Coyle announced Wednesday.

Coyle’s announcement follows allegations that members of his team were abusing and selling the prescription drug Xanax, and that Robinson sought to quietly resolve any illegal drug use or distribution internally. Robinson’s agent denied these claims in a statement Monday.

Body recovered from Mississippi River identified as David Miller

A body recovered from the Mississippi River has been identified as missing University student David Miller, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Miller’s remains were discovered by a boater early Wednesday morning near the Ford Parkway Bridge. At around 9 a.m., Hennepin County Sheriff’s deputies recovered his body.

Miller, a third-year student in the College of Biological Sciences, was reported missing last Wednesday afternoon by his roommates.
