University of Minnesota officials discussed the institution’s role in alleviating crime at a Board of Regents meeting Thursday.
After a semester of frequent University-issued crime alerts, regents and administrators addressed the perception of crime and its effect on the University.
“It’s really a bread and butter issue for us,” Vice President for University Services Pam Wheelock said at the meeting.

The University of Minnesota Faculty Senate voted 67-23 on Thursday afternoon to create an independent, external panel to investigate clinical research on human subjects at the University.
The decision came after renewed calls from scholars and bioethicists to re-examine the 2004 suicide of Dan Markingson, a 26-year-old who participated in a clinical drug trial at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview ten years ago.

The victim was walking near the intersection of University Avenue Southeast and Oak Street Southeast when two males in a dark blue sedan approached her, according to an email crime alert sent to the University community Wednesday evening.

A University of Minnesota student was the victim of a sexual assault early Sunday morning, according to an email alert sent Sunday by University Police chief Greg Hestness.
The incident took place around 2:15 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of 15th Avenue Southeast and Eighth Street Southeast, according to the alert.

A carbon monoxide leak forced University Village residents out of the apartment building for about two hours Friday night. Officials gave the all-clear shortly after 10 p.m.
Minneapolis Fire Battalion Chief Steve Ebert said it's unclear what caused the elevated carbon monoxide levels, which prompted building staff to call 911 shortly after 8 p.m. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly when inhaled.
Ebert said nobody was treated for carbon monoxide poisoning but one woman spoke with emergency medical technicians at the scene.
