Kaler unveils plan to retain low-income students

University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler unveiled a plan Thursday to improve first-year retention rates of low-income University students.

He presented the initiative, Retaining all Our Students, at a White House college opportunity summit hosted by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. The event included other college and university presidents and community leaders.

Doran submits demolition requests for Dinkytown properties

Doran Companies  has submitted demolition applications for three Dinkytown properties near the University of Minnesota, with plans to build a mixed-use hotel.

The bulk of the hotel would be on two of the plots, which now house Mesa Pizza , Camdi Restaurant, Dinkytown Tattoo Shop, Publika Tea and Coffee Union  and the University LifeCare Center. The Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission could block the project if it deems the buildings historical resources when it meets to hear the applications Jan. 21.

Body found in Chicago River presumed to be that of missing student

A body found in the Chicago River Wednesday afternoon is apparently that of University of Minnesota senior Lauren Li, who fell in the river trying to rescue a friend early Monday.

Li was visiting Chicago with friends including Ken Hoang, 26, who died Monday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He passed a fence to reach the river, and fell in trying to retrieve his cell phone after dropping it on the ice.

Li and 23-year-old University senior Quoc-Viet Phan Hoang fell in the river trying to rescue Ken Hoang. Quoc-Viet Phan Hoang was hospitalized and released Wednesday.

Former U student dead, current student missing after fall in Chicago River

A former University of Minnesota student has died and a current University senior is missing after an attempt to retrieve a cell phone from the Chicago River early Monday.

Ken Hoang, 26, died Monday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He passed a fence to reach the river, and fell in trying to retrieve his cell phone after dropping it on the ice.

Two of Hoang's friends tried to rescue him and also fell in the river. One, an unidentified 23-year-old man, was hospitalized. The other, 21-year-old University senior Lauren Li, is still missing.

The appointment of Coleman, who has served as political science department chair at the University of Wisconsin-Madison since 2007, is set for July 31.

Regents talk campus safety

University of Minnesota officials discussed the institution’s role in alleviating crime at a Board of Regents meeting Thursday.

After a semester of frequent University-issued crime alerts, regents and administrators addressed the perception of crime and its effect on the University.

“It’s really a bread and butter issue for us,” Vice President for University Services Pam Wheelock said at the meeting.
