By: Jace Frederick

It was a rough 20 minutes of basketball for the Gophers.

Minnesota (5-2) allowed countless easy buckets and was outscored 52-33 in the second half en route to an 87-73 loss to Arkansas (4-1) on Tuesday night.

“We came out in the second half and they punched us first,” junior guard Andre Hollins said. “We didn't play as hard as we should have.”

Gophers scrape past Indiana with 42-39 win

By: Jack Satzinger

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Minnesota dominated most of the game, but needed to force a late turnover to escape with a 42-39 win over Indiana on Saturday afternoon.

The Gophers scored on their first drive of the game for the first time of the year, highlighted by a 40-yard Philip Nelson to Derrick Engel pass. They didn’t stop there, jumping out to a 35-13 lead in the third quarter.

A sloppy fourth quarter eventually caught up with Minnesota, but a timely touchdown pass and a key fumble recovery helped it to hang on.

Gophers down Cardinal Stritch in exhibition

By: Jace Frederick

The Gophers offense was fast, fluid and efficient in the first half of their season opening 79-57 exhibition win over Cardinal Stritch. Minnesota's defense attacked and forced numerous turnovers that led to easy buckets in head coach Richard Pitino’s unofficial debut.

The second half? Eh, not so much.

After dominating the first half, Minnesota was outscored 38-33 in the second half by the Wolves.

Gophers down Northwestern 20-17

By: Jack Satzinger

EVANSTON, Ill. — The Gophers are back and so is their head coach Jerry Kill — sort of.

Minnesota, fresh off a bye week, beat Northwestern 20-17 on the road. It was led by a strong defensive effort, but the story of the game might have been Kill's presence.

Kill, who took a leave of absence to focus on his epilepsy treatment earlier this month, did not coach Saturday, but was in attendance and watched his team from the coaches’ box.

Q&A with new Gophers recruit Martin

By: Jace Frederick

Richard Pitino nabbed his first recruit of the Class of 2014 on Monday afternoon when three-star forward Josh Martin committed to Minnesota.

I spoke with Martin, a 6-foot-8-inch forward from Seattle, Wash., on Monday night, and it was hard not to be impressed by his confident, mature demeanor.

Here’s what he said:

Q: You were down to three schools: the Gophers, Florida State and Pittsburgh. What was the deciding factor that pushed you toward Minnesota?
