UO Dance Marathon for Miracle Babies

University of Oregon students hosted a dance marathon benefit Saturday evening for the Children’s Miracle Network at Peacehealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend.

The marathon began at noon in the EMU ballroom and continued until 10 p.m. This is the 10th year that university students hosted the event. This year at least 289 students and community members participated.

According to Robyn Bailey, a Children’s Miracle Network recipient, hundreds of babies go through the neonatal intensive care unit each year nationally.

“They don’t realize they’re saving hundreds and hundreds of babies right now,” said Bailey. Without the Children’s Medical Network, Bailey’s twins, Emma and Lily, wouldn’t have survived.

Posters hang on the walls of the ballroom, bearing the names of children the program has connected with as well as messages from students.

“We develop relationships with all the families and learn their stories,” said UO senior Theresa Nguyen about the posters. “It’s honoring their life and their little miracles.”

The Children’s Miracle Network at Peacehealth is now affiliated with the university and is considered a part of the ASUO student program for two years.

Abby Rogers works as the liaison between the UO program and the Children’s Miracle Network at Peacehealth Sacred Heart at Riverbend. Rogers coordinates with the local families that benefit from the Children’s Miracle Network to connect them with the events. Additionally, she strives to show the students what their fundraising does for the children and families.

Roger remarks that a majority of the students attending UO have no ties to the greater Lane County area.

“It’s a pretty powerful thing that they want to take on our local hospital as the beneficiary and invest in the community that they’re a part of.”

Video: The Women’s Marches in Oregon

This weekend women all over the United States united in protest and support for civil rights. Some estimates put the attendance at three million people, or more than 1 percent of the total population. Over 100,000 women marched in Portland alone. They originally met at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, and marched in a organized route through lower downtown Portland. The march was peaceful, but so large the entire route was full for most of the events duration.

Thousands of protesters descended on the U.S. Federal Courthouse in Eugene, Saturday Jan. 21 for the Women’s Day March. The event was held in conjunction with several protests all across the country. Protesters met at the Courthouse at noon and listened to several speakers, including Mayor Lucy Vinis, City Councilor Emily Semple, and several religious and activists leaders from Eugene. Around 7,000 of protesters then marched from several blocks to WOW Hall in downtown Eugene where they met to chant and cheer against President Trump. Signs calling for the impeachment of Trump dotted the crowd as pink-hatted protesters marched through the streets.

Video: Ducks Before and After the Election Results

The University of Oregon is a historically left-wing campus. On November 8th, 2016 the Emerald set out to stir up a conversation on the importance of voting and this year’s nominees. Ranging from voters and non-voters to students unable to vote, here is the student commentary on the election, just hours before the final culmination of the past years’ campaigns.
One Week Later: We ask the campus community how they are feeling and reacting to the President-elect and our new American climate.
