After a year filled with unprecedented budget restraints and an election riddled with controversy, the ASUO Senate wrapped up their last meeting of the school year on Wednesday.
The Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students Dr. Paul Shang spoke on behalf of University of Oregon President Michael Gottfredson about the recent religious and political activists that have been on campus promoting their agendas. Shang said that he, UO President Michael Gottfredson and UOPD are aware of the protesters, encourage students to stand for what they believe in and reminded them to do so in a respectful way if they are talking to the activists.
“[Gottfredson] wanted you to know that he is thinking of you [the senate] and all the other students on campus,” Shang said in the meeting. “When these people come out to talk to the students, it can be very troubling for some to hear. This is up to the students, but I think that they should signal to others on campus with signs or what have you that these people are here and spreading their agendas.”
Recently, Campus Ministry USA president Jed Smock, also known as Brother Jed, has been out on the campus lawns spreading his religious beliefs which are particularly homophobic and anti-feminist. UOPD officers were present during Brother Jed’s speech to make sure that no violence was occurring.
Nearly 300 students were present when he spoke on campus on Wednesday, including protesters who chanted, “Hey hey, ho ho, homophobia’s got to go.”
With this being the last meeting of the year, student groups that requested money from Senate in the past now had to return the money that wasn’t used to the ASUO’s surplus fund. Nine groups returned a total of over $10,000 to the surplus fund, with largest contribution being from the Student Bar Association who contributed an excess of over $4,000.
ASUO senate will be meeting during the summer, but the date and time for the meetings have not been set yet.
