Response to letter regarding ‘We Can Do Better’ email

By: Kathryn Luk, University student

It’s just rude when a group of people is upset regarding the perpetuation of harmful and insensitive cultural stereotypes that makes them look bad, and someone’s first thought is the standard, “I don’t get how it’s offensive (presumably because it doesn’t offend me personally), so you’re all just overreacting.”

This statement almost invariably devolves into how various minority groups are just too sensitive these days and that political correctness has gone too far.

By: Lydia Salus, Environment Minnesota

The Clean Water Act has brought progress to Minnesota lakes and rivers, but in order to continue on the path to success, we must protect all the waterways in Minnesota. A loophole in the Clean Water Act has left just more than half of Minnesota’s rivers and streams, including many that feed into the Mississippi River, vulnerable to pollution.

All of Minnesota’s waterways deserve protection.

Collaboration for diversity needed

Talk of campus diversity has come to the forefront at the University of Minnesota in recent weeks following a line of criticism regarding how the school recruits and retains people of color.

The Minnesota Daily recently reported that the student group Whose Diversity? wrote to University President Eric Kaler, requesting to meet and discuss how to make the campus more inclusive. Kaler agreed to do so and said it seems like he’s “on the same side” as Whose Diversity?

By: Destanie Martin-Johnson

Saira Blair became the youngest candidate elected to state office in the nation on Nov. 4 at age 18. She won a seat in West Virginia’s House of Delegates and will represent a small part of the state. Gophers win first two dual meets

By: Danny Chen

Hours of traveling didn’t seem to fatigue the Gophers on Saturday, as they defeated both Air Force and Wyoming.

Minnesota defeated Air Force 28-15 and Wyoming 30-7, starting their dual-meet schedule with two victories.

The victories gave Minnesota its 11th- and 12th-consecutive nonconference dual meet victories since 2012.

“I am really proud of the guys,” head assistant coach Brandon Eggum said. “I thought it was a tough day overall, and we had wrestlers that stepped up and wrestled well.”

In the midst of a nine-match winning streak, No. 6 Penn State had momentum rolling into Saturday’s contest against Minnesota.

But that didn’t stop the Gophers from challenging the Nittany Lions on their home court.

Stollings begins Gophers coaching career with a victory

By: Matt Greenstein

On a cold but momentous night in which the Gophers defeated Southeastern Louisiana 109-60, Minnesota stuck to its up-tempo strategy and, in the process, won Marlene Stollings’ introductory game as head coach.

Since Stollings was hired, questions surrounding her fast-paced scheme have been rampant. Minnesota put all of those questions to rest Friday.

Stollings pulled out a small, three-guard lineup including freshman Carlie Wagner, senior Rachel Banham and junior Shayne Mullaney.
