End the racialized crime alerts

By: Clemon Dabney and Dane Verret, University graduate students

Crime alerts can, realistically, be seen as an official University of Minnesota statement that invites a bias against almost all black students on campus. The reports put black students at risk for increased macro- and micro-aggressions.

Millennials affect driving debate

The millennial generation is changing the way Minnesotans view transportation, which will have profound effects on the future of public policy, the Star Tribune reported Sunday.  A recent study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that 18-year-olds with driver’s licenses in the state dropped by nearly 1,000 people from 2011 to 2013.

Commonly cited reasons for this gradual shift in preference include better infrastructure for commuting by bike to work, increased housing near workplaces, the light rail system and the success of car-sharing programs.

National dialogue on race needed

Bryan Stevenson, a criminal justice lawyer and New York University professor, gave a speech in Minneapolis following last week’s news of the St. Louis County grand jury’s decision regarding the shooting of Michael Brown. Stevenson argued that the ruling and the racial inequities still faced throughout the United States are the outcome of an unwillingness to acknowledge and discuss the huge racial injustices that are pervasive throughout the nation’s past and present.

Hillary Clinton is out of touch

By: Ronald Dixon

All discussions about the 2016 presidential election seem to include the prospect of Hillary Clinton running for office. Indeed, for two reasons, many consider her to be the de facto Democratic candidate.

First, she is incredibly popular among self-described Democrats. Second, she has a large resume, having served as first lady, senator and secretary of state.

On paper, Clinton is certainly a qualified candidate. But assessments of some of her recent actions and connections show that she is, unfortunately, out of touch with average Americans.

GMOs will be the future of agriculture

By: Anant Naik

Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Union’s executive branch, recently fired an EU scientific adviser because of her professional opinion that genetically modified foods, or GMOs, can benefit our food consumption. This decision came after Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, well-known environmental groups in Europe, pressured the president.

Gophers near end of season

By: Rachel Timmerman

The Gophers have only two matches to prove they have what it takes to be in the NCAA tournament.

“Every match is critical at this point,” head coach Hugh McCutcheon said.

To start, Minnesota will play Ohio State on the road Wednesday night.

Sophomore middle blocker Paige Tapp said the team is scouting the Buckeyes.

“We have a different strategy for each [team],” Tapp said, “but we know Ohio State has many different lineups, and we just have to be ready for whatever they bring to us.”

Minnesota heads back to the Garden

By: Jack Satzinger

Minnesota will play St. John’s on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, which is arguably the most storied arena in basketball history.

But for the Gophers, primetime matchups in New York City are nothing new. Some of Minnesota’s players, like seniors Andre Hollins and Kendal Shell, have played at the facility — once during the 2012 National Invitation Tournament and again for the 2014 NIT.

Shell said the team’s upperclassmen have a certain comfort level with playing at the facility for a third time.

Wrestlers ready for tough challenge

By: Danny Chen

The Gophers defeated Oklahoma State last year by one point on the road.

They’ll have a chance to replicate that performance on Saturday at home.

Head assistant coach Brandon Eggum said the Gophers will be facing a very good program when they take on the No. 8 team in the nation.

“We expect a hard-fought battle this Saturday,” Eggum said. “They are a bigger team, and there is no question that our guys are excited about the opportunity to wrestle [Oklahoma State]. There [will] be some good matchups … and some fun battles to watch.”

Banham guides Gophers to fourth victory

By: Matt Greenstein

The Gophers continued their defensive dominance with a commanding 107-62 victory over the Southern University Jaguars on Tuesday night.

The Jaguars started the game 1-for-7 from the floor, and the Gophers capitalized on their defensive pressure early on, jumping out to a quick 13-2 lead.

“We started the game off more intense than we have the last couple of games. I think that just set the tone for the entire evening. We jumped out to such a great start that we were able to play off of it the rest of the night,” head coach Marlene Stollings said.

Gophers look to regain fresh legs

By: Grant Donald

Sophomore Dani Cameranesi is coming off an excellent extended weekend. The Gophers’ leading goalscorer netted five goals in three games.

However, the first thing she said after Monday’s victory over St. Cloud State was how tired her legs were after playing three games in four days.

“My legs were a little dead today,” Cameranesi said. “I probably could have had a little better preparation over the weekend.”
