Dr. Date

Dr. Date,

So I met this guy at a party a couple of weeks ago. We hit it off pretty well and started making out. Keep in mind that I was a bit drunk when this happened. Afterward, he drove me home, and we exchanged numbers. He’s come over to my place, we’ve made out, he has slept over, but we haven’t had sex yet.

University seeks funding for community issues

By: Blair Emerson

The University of Minnesota wants $6.25 million to boost faculty hiring, grants and undergraduate service learning and broaden its reach across the state.

The “vital communities” initiative is part of the University’s larger $12.5 million request included in its 2016-17 biennial budget. School leaders say this request for state funding comes at a time when research on the state’s achievement gap and growing diversity is sorely needed.

Want $10 an hour? Grab a shovel at TCF

By: John Thomas

Officials say they need help removing snow from TCF Bank Stadium before the University of Minnesota’s Saturday football game — and they’re willing to pay anyone who pitches in.

The University announced Wednesday that it will pay $10 an hour for help shoveling the stadium before the Gophers face Ohio State. About 100 people showed up for the first shift on Wednesday afternoon, said Associate Athletics Director of Facilities Scott Ellison.

Ellison said officials are aiming for another 30 to 50 people per shift but he welcomes any help.

Gophers head to NCAA regional

By: Matt Greenstein

With a seventh-place finish at the Big Ten championships in the rearview mirror, the Gophers are going into the NCAA Midwest regional meet on Friday and focusing on qualifying for nationals.

Redshirt junior Christian Skaret said the team has to use the poor performance at the conference championships as fuel for improvement at regionals.

“Any time you go home with your tail between your legs, that feeling definitely sticks in your mind for quite some time,” he said. “We definitely want to use it as motivation.”

By: Matt Greenstein

With the hiring of Marlene Stollings, fans had better not blink, or they’ll miss the up-tempo style the new head coach has implemented into the Gophers’ new-look team.

The Gophers will open their season against Southeastern Louisiana on Friday for a game Stollings said the team has been anxiously awaiting.

Elite forward Harrell to challenge King

By: Jack Satzinger

Last spring, Montrezl Harrell went back and forth with decisions about his future.

He could have joined the heralded 2014 NBA Draft class, where he likely would have been a first-round pick, but he turned down the shot at millions of dollars to instead play another season at Louisville under Rick Pitino. Harrell announced his decision on April 14 via Twitter.

Pitino was likely ecstatic to get the big man back for at least another season.

But Minnesota head coach Richard Pitino wasn’t as enthused.

Pannek contributes early in college career

By: Grant Donald

After the Gophers came away from their last game without a single goal, the need for more scoring threats became apparent.

Forward Kelly Pannek has the potential to solve some of Minnesota’s scoring woes, even though she is only a freshman.

“When you get recruited somewhere as a forward, they obviously see you filling [a scoring role],” Pannek said. “I think everyone is looking forward to adding to the offense.”

Minnesota rallies for comeback victory

By: Rachel Timmerman

The Gophers have struggled in conference play this season.

But the team defeated Northwestern in four sets Wednesday night, its second victory in the last three matches. It’s a sign that things might be turning around.

After four matches on the road, the Gophers returned to the Sports Pavilion for the victory.

“It feels good to play at home,” sophomore Sarah Wilhite said. “We’ve been away for so long.”

Head coach Hugh McCutcheon agreed and said the team needed the victory.

Gophers’ defense picking up on offense

By: Ben Gotz

After a slow start to the season, the Gophers’ blue line is starting to get red hot.

During the team’s first six games, the defensemen were responsible for only one goal.

Last weekend, they scored four.

Junior Mike Reilly said associate head coach Mike Guentzel reminded the team’s defensemen they had just one goal going into last weekend’s series against Notre Dame.

That goal was an empty-netter by junior defenseman Brady Skjei, who the team expects to be out until around Thanksgiving.

Seniors help shape culture of program

By: Grant Donald

When head coach Jerry Kill arrived on campus four years ago, he didn’t have much time to put together his first recruiting class as a Big Ten head coach.

Kill kept the players who had already accepted scholarships from former head coach Tim Brewster, and he tried his best to add those who still hadn’t decided which school to play at.

Fast-forward four years, and that patchwork recruiting class has catapulted the Gophers into the national spotlight. Now, the team is preparing for its final game at TCF Bank Stadium.
