Kaler rolls out tuition hike proposal

Tuition will increase nearly 10 percent for some students at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus if a plan proposed Friday is approved by the Board of Regents.

University President Eric Kaler’s proposal calls for a 9.9 percent hike for nonresident, non-reciprocity undergraduates, a 2.5 percent increase for resident undergraduates and increases between .5 percent and 5 percent for graduate and professional students.

Body found in river near campus

A body was recovered from the Mississippi River under the Franklin Ave. bridge on Wednesday morning, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.  

Coaches from the University of Minnesota women’s rowing team found an adult male’s body in the river during rowing practice that morning.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the identity of the man and cause of death is still under investigation.

Minnesota Legislative Auditor James Nobles said he plans to launch a new probe of the University’s psychiatric research practices — his third look into University psychiatric research since the release of his first report last March.

Three armed robberies reported in the University area since Tuesday

Three armed robberies have taken place in the University area since Tuesday night.

In a span of about five hours late Wednesday and early Thursday, two aggravated robberies took place near the University of Minnesota campus — about 24 hours after a similar event in the same area was reported.

Police suspect all three robberies were committed by the same two suspects, who fled on foot, according to a Minneapolis Police Department Facebook post.

Former U student sentenced to prison for leaving explosives in Coffman Union

The former University of Minnesota student who pleaded guilty to leaving gasoline-covered smoke flares inside Coffman Union last August has been sentenced to more than three years in prison.

In a hearing that lasted about 20 minutes, Jason Robert Johnson, 35, was sentenced to 42 months in prison for terroristic intent in Hennepin County District Court on Thursday.

In August, Johnson left a bag in Coffman containing smoke flares, an accelerant similar to gasoline and a lighter. The incident caused police to temporarily close the building.

Antibiotic resistance plagues public health

Substantial use of antibiotics has caused an increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria, impacting health care providers’ ability to fight infectious diseases.

Government officials are trying to teach the general public more about the issue in order to ensure the medicine is used appropriately.

In an effort to address antibiotic overuse across the globe, Gov. Mark Dayton announced last week as “Get Smart — Know When Antibiotics Work Week.”

Precinct protests to persist

Since Minneapolis police officers fatally shot Jamar Clark on Nov. 15, protesters have continuously staged protests outside the department’s 4th Precinct station and have demanded video footage of the incident.

Clark’s funeral will take place Wednesday, and his family requested that no protests take place that day. But some protesters said the demonstrations will continue at least through Thursday evening, when protesters plan to march from the 4th Precinct to the city government buildings downtown.
