HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – The giant cutout of head coach Marlene Stollings one fan brought to Illinois emulated the real life version much of Thursday night.
Intense. Upset. And often, using loud noises to get those emotions across.
The Gophers cruised to an early lead over the Purdue Boilermakers in their first game of the Big Ten tournament, but once the lead started to evaporate, tension seemed to mount on the Minnesota bench.

Heading into Thursday’s exhilarating and adrenaline-filled 90-88 overtime loss against Purdue, Minnesota’s redshirt sophomore center Amanda Zahui B. said the Gophers would have to contain the Boilermakers’ shooters.
But Minnesota struggled to do that Thursday; Zahui B. — who was third in the nation in blocks as of Jan. 20 — was only held to just one block during the game.

These days, it’s not uncommon for a running back to give most of the praise to his linemen after a huge performance.
Senior running back David Cobb is no different. Cobb rushed for a career-high 220 yards and scored two touchdowns in Minnesota’s 35-24 win over Middle Tennessee State. After the game, he praised his offensive line.
“I need to borrow probably $300 from the athletic director to take the [offensive] line out to eat,” Cobb joked.

For Gophers quarterback Mitch Leidner, the script was flipped Thursday night.
The Gophers opened their season with a mid-week home game under the lights for the second-straight year. But instead of being the back-up quarterback coming into the game during garbage time with little pressure on his shoulders, Leidner was "the guy" under center from the get-go.

After opening up their nonconference schedule with an offensive explosion Friday, the Gophers lost to one of the top teams in the country Sunday afternoon.
Minnesota opened its season with a win, defeating Stetson 10-0, but lost to No. 2 Florida State 4-1 in its second match.
It was a tale of two games for the Gophers, who dominated possession against Stetson but saw the tables slightly turned when they played the Seminoles.

The Gophers soccer team seemed to have one focus in their first match of the season: attack.
In their warm-up for the regular season, the Gophers defeated North Dakota 3-0, thanks to a pressuring offensive performance that recorded 12 shots on goal in the match.
For the Gophers, it was their first action on the field together since last November, and they were happy to just be back out there.

Flip Saunders hasn’t slipped on a Minnesota uniform since 1977, but he’s still having a major impact on the state’s basketball landscape.
The Minnesota Timberwolves announced Friday that Saunders, who served as the franchise’s president of basketball operations last season, will take to the sidelines to replace former head coach Rick Adelman.
Saunders will remain president of basketball operations while coaching. The Cleveland, Ohio, native is also a minority owner and will have to juggle multiple responsibilities.

When Gophers head coach Richard Pitino tells out-of-state recruits about Minnesota, the athletically gifted teenagers typically don’t know what to expect.
It’s cold. It’s mostly rural. The school’s arena is called “The Barn.”
But if one of the Gophers’ top targets pre-conceived notions about the North Star state, they were debunked after playing in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League tournament in Eagan, Minn., last weekend.
