Fire damages two houses overnight

A heavy fire early Thursday morning partially destroyed a two-story house at 804 13th Ave. SE and left another damaged.

Firefighters responded to a call around 2:20 a.m. and started attacking the fire, according to a release from the Minneapolis Fire Department. The fire then spread into the neighboring building’s attic, at which point a second alarm was called for backup.

No one was injured, according to the release.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon to cut pledging

Sigma Alpha Epsilon, a nationally represented fraternity that’s been the source of a lot of scrutiny in the greek community, has eliminated its pledging process as of  Sunday.

The pledge program will be replaced with a 96-hour add/drop process in which a potential new member can choose to register as a full member or abandon his membership, according to an announcement on the national organization’s website.

Office for Fraternity and Sorority Life Director Matt Levine said the University’s chapter has been receptive to the change so far.

City split on Dinkytown demolitions

A developer and a neighborhood are split on what’s best for Dinkytown, and so is the city.
 
The Minneapolis City Council Zoning and Planning Committee sanctioned demolition Thursday for two Dinkytown buildings that stand where Doran Companies hopes to build a hotel.

Campus Connector involved in accident

A University of Minnesota Campus Connector was involved in an accident Friday morning at the intersection of the Transitway and Como Avenue near the St. Paul campus. A man driving on Como Avenue ran a red light and hit the Connector, causing it to hit the stoplight and a fence, according to University police Deputy Chuck Miner. The man said his vision was blocked by the sun when he hit the bus, Miner said. There were approximately seven passengers on the connector. No injuries were reported, he said.

Como residents sue General Mills

Two Southeast Como residents filed a class-action lawsuit against General Mills on Thursday after several neighborhood homes tested positive for high levels of a potentially dangerous chemical.

Filed in federal district court by residents Karl Ebert and Carol Krauze, the suit alleges trichloroethylene, or TCE, dumped on a former General Mills site decades ago has threatened residents’ health and decreased the value of their properties.

Man robbed outside University Village

A man was robbed Saturday morning at 8:45 at a bus stop outside University Village, according to an email crime alert sent by University police Chief Greg Hestness Monday.

According to the alert, the victim was waiting for a bus when two men approached him and asked him what time it was. One then showed the man a gun, told him to give up his valuables, and punched him in the face, according to the alert.

They took the victim’s wallet, phone and backpack, according to the alert.

Police were unable to locate the suspects.
