Review: ‘The Age of Adaline’ — Blake Lively sheds her ‘Gossip Girl’ image with flying colors

We’re used to romance films incorporating comedy, science fiction or history, but it’s not too often we see all of these in one well-written story — The Age of Adaline, however, doesn’t disappoint.

Director Lee Toland Krieger, who also directed The Vicious Kind (2009) and Celeste & Jesse Forever (2012), has done it again. And coming a long way since Gossip Girl, the timeless beauty Blake Lively was perfectly cast as Adaline, alongside the handsome Game Of Thrones star, Michiel Huisman.

A breath of fresh air, this classy romance defies the overly saturated teen romance flicks. You know, the unrealistic ones starring 23-year-old actors trying to pass off as high school students. Mind you, The Age of Adaline is also a bit unrealistic, as a young woman in a car crash is struck by lightning, revived and from that point on, never ages — still, the story is believable.

As the loose ends of Adaline’s story slowly came together, starting from present-day San Francisco and filling us in with flashbacks (and helpful narration), it was easy to enjoy the creativity and elegance in all aspects of the film, from writing to costuming.

It’s cast was just as seamless, as Hollywood favorites like Harrison Ford and Ellen Burstyn brought in additional factors that embedded a harsh reality into the punch line “forever young.” Harrison, introduced later in the film, plays Adaline’s coincidental old someone, and Burstyn plays her daughter Flemming (at 82), whom she spends much of the film with.

The close relationship of Adaline and Flemming was an unexpectedly remarkable part of the story — she was the only one who knew Adaline’s secret. Both actresses were impressive; Lively’s mannerisms and voice maintained that of a mature mother, despite their age difference, and 82-year-old Flemming didn’t act a day over 20. Their relationship warmed our hearts as we thought of our own mothers, and realized that love really is blind to age.

Reaching for our tissues, we saw a battle between time, love, security and happiness in Adaline’s character development. She initially rejects the idea of romance, saying “It’s not the same when there’s no “growing old together,” but comes to learn that sometimes its okay to be vulnerable, and that’s when she truly begins to live her life.

7 free (or almost free) things to do in Eugene this spring

Think outside the box this spring — the options to venture beyond 13th are endless, especially as the April showers finally begin to seize.

Next time you have the urge to get out of the house and go on a new adventure, don’t let your empty bank account stop you. Here are some free (or almost free) things to do this spring.

1. “Open Mic Nights” for the comedians: OpenMikes.org provides a detailed calendar of when and where you can find the best amateur stand-up in all of Oregon and Eugene. Featured on its calendar are three to four nights a week of stand-up at many of Eugene’s local bars, pubs and even hot wing shops.

2. Eugene Saturday Market: This market features more than 200 local artisans every week, selling everything from hand-crafted jewelry to honey harvested right from their back yard. Additionally, there are 15 food booths and live music to listen to as you eat and browse. The market is located downtown on 8th and Oak, every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine. The Lane County Farmer’s Market is also conveniently located across the street from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

3. Sights for the trailblazers: If you are up for a very short drive, the Wooden Shoe Tulip Fest brings about 40 acres of colorful tulips to your very eyes. The farm also features its own garden, hay rides and wine tasting. $5 admission.

4. For the aspiring Yogis: REI is offering free outdoor yoga instruction on April 30 at its Eugene store to provide a basic introduction to yoga. Spots are filling quickly: register on REI’s website.

5. For the movie buffs and adrenaline junkies: The Banff Mountain Film Festival will be taking place at the McDonald Theatre April 16-17. Indulge your wild side as a variety of outdoor videos are presented to a huge audience. Tickets  are $15 for the general public and $11 for UO students.

6. For the foodies: The Grilled Cheese Experience event will kick off May 1 and run until the 10, as restaurants all over Eugene compete against one another to see who can put the best spin on the classic grilled cheese. Try them all for yourself at each of the participating restaurants and part of your proceeds will go towards FOOD for Lane County. Join the Facebook event here.

7. For the history buffs: The University of Oregon’s Museum of Natural and Cultural History offers various exhibits this spring, which you can view Tuesdays through Sundays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Current and future exhibits can be found on its website. Admission to the museum is always free to students with ID, and general admission is $5.

‘The Longest Ride’ Review: The latest Nicholas Sparks film adaptation rounds up more hearts than ever before

America’s cupid Nicholas Sparks, released his latest book-to-silver-screen adaptation Friday, titled The Longest Ride, starring Scott Eastwood (Clint’s son), Britt Robertson, Alan Alda, Jack Huston and Oona Chaplin.

Sparks has become a bit notorious for his many films ranking sub-par in comparison to the blockbuster, The Notebook (2004). Since it’s release over 10 years ago, the films that came after it were incomparable, yet the hype for each new one remains the same.

The trailers released leave women across America giddy for months with a catchy song, always beautiful leads and a steamy kiss always leaving us trying to find where our jaws went when they hit the floor. Yet, we would leave the theater somewhat let down, whether it was the chemistry, story or bad acting, they were always just O.K.

The romantic journey of bull rider Luke and art student Sophia was cleverly intersected by an elderly man, Ira (Alda), as he befriends the couple after they save him in a car accident and reflects back on his past love, Ruth. The film, with multiple plots running parallel, did not become jumpy enough to be distracting.

Surprisingly, there were more sniffles and crumpling of tissues heard during flashbacks of Ira and Ruth than there were during scenes of Luke and Sophia.

The characters in Sparks’ film had chemistry and acting skills on lock with Eastwood and Alda coming from very-Hollywood backgrounds and the 24-year-old Ms. Robertson quickly making a name for herself. The three seemed to warm hearts as they complemented one another.

The other relationship between young Ira and Ruth was also impressive to watch, and not just because the actors were Jack Huston and Oona Chaplin, also with Hollywood blood running deeply through their veins.

Their story was the heart of the production, as director George Tillman Jr. (Soul Food), seemed to focus on the individual ups and downs that came with Ira and Ruth’s relationship, as Luke and Sophia’s own struggles mirrored the possible depths to come in their future.

Every Sparks’ film is known to have a message to take home: “Love requires sacrifice… always” as stated by Ira.

The mirroring of Ira and Ruth’s long-term relationship against Luke and Sophia’s new love provided aspiration for all and Tillman Jr. managed to show how love grows at different points in people’s lives as they literally grow old together.

The Longest Ride was undeniably as slick as Eastwood’s grin and provided much more depth than Sparks’ recent films.

Without giving too much away: it’s ending was in the usual cut-to-the-chase-too-fast-from-the-climax fashion but left hearts more full than other endings such as The Best Of Me (2014) or Dear John (2010).

Though Ira and Ruth’s story seemed to be the more authentic relationship, Luke and Sophia’s received more attention, and not just because of the Eastwood name and an undeniable resemblance to his father, but because there was a sea of heavy breathing in the audience every time he merely blinked.

MTV Movie Awards recap: The B-Grade awards show for our stars

Last night was MTV’s annual Movie Awards, with appearances by Kevin Hart, Jennifer Lopez, Channing Tatum, Robert Downey Jr., and more.

The evening was filled with jokes, cartoon cats and even a few musical performances as the large Los Angeles audience highlighted the past year’s best films.

Up and coming comedian, Amy Schumer (Trainwreck) hosted a memorable show as she went outside the box of poking fun at celebrities but instead successfully placed herself as characters in every “Movie Of The Year” nominee throughout different points of the show.

Many were not too fond of her excessive dirty jokes throughout, but then remembered it was MTV and there are no rules.

The MTV Movie Awards is unique in itself, with nominees ranging from previous Oscar leads to fan favorite comedies and dramas.

Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars presented unusual categories, for example, “Best Kiss,” “Best Scared As Sh*t” and “Best Shirtless Performance” were among a few of the many popular awards handed out to actors who starred in films in 2014.

“This is the only awards show where the people who nominate and vote for the winners are the same ones who have kept “Teen Mom” and “Catfish” on the air,” stated Schumer.

This may have been proven true as a random array of winners walked away with golden popcorn awards. It was interesting that the winners were present in the audience, but the runner-ups were not, proving the other point of why this B-Grade show is clearly for cheap entertainment.

We saw The Fault In Our Stars and Divergent actress, Shailene Woodley almost one too many times, as she walked away with three awards; “Best Kiss,” “Trailblazer Award” and “Movie of the Year” had her on the stage or panned by the camera multiple times on the floor.

Like the special “Trailblazer Award,” two others were recognized for their accomplishments; Robert Downey Jr. (“Generation Award”) and Kevin Hart (“Comedic Genius Award”) both delivered humbling speeches, which the audience expected nothing less from the two acclaimed actors.

Zac Efron wouldn’t have made his appearance memorable if it didn’t include him talking with his shirt off so we could stare at his spray-tanned abs for a minute and a half, obviously.

A crowd favorite, “Best Kiss” was a bit of a let down this year, as The Fault In Our Stars actress Shailene Woodley had to accept the award by herself in the absence of Ansel Elgort, as it is a tradition to “reenact” the kiss for the live-audience.

She also made a joke about it feeling like “kissing your brother”…talk about a downer.

But we did get to see Channing Tatum shake his behind later for the cameras as a little tease for the upcoming Magic Mike XXL movie, so that’ll do for an above-average substitute.

5 recipes to try with spring fruits and veggies that are back in season

As we push away winter blues, we welcome spring and summer greens — and every other vibrant color for that matter.

In the food world, many of our favorites are finally making their encore appearance back into our local markets, but how can we keep track of what’s actually about to be at the height of its prime, for taste’s sake? Use this guide and even a few recipes to step up your game in the kitchen this spring.

According to the website Fruits & Veggies More Matters, spring is stocked with delicious fruits and vegetables. Here are a few you can look out for next time you’re picking up produce at your local market: Strawberries, apricots, cherries, fennel, honeydew melon, lychee, mango, oranges, purple or white asparagus, pineapple, rhubarb, Swiss chard, Vidalia onions and various types of greens as opposed to the usual kale.

You may be familiar with Eugene’s famous Saturday Market, but did you know Lane County holds a Farmers Market every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for a wide selection of fresh fruits and vegetables? It’s versatile website is full of recipes and a few favorites to try this spring which include:

1. Grilled Halibut with Peach and Pepper Salsa

Salsa:

  • 1, 1/3 cups coarsely chopped peeled yellow peaches (about 1 pound)
  • 1 cup chopped red bell pepper (about 1 medium)
  • 1/3 cup thinly sliced green onions
  • 1/3 cup chopped fresh arugula
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (about 2 lemons)
  • 4 tsp chopped fresh oregano
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/2 habanero pepper, seeded and minced
  • 1 garlic clove, minced

Fish:

  • 4 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 4 tsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 4 (6 oz.) skinless halibut fillets
  • 3/8 tsp salt
  • 3/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • Cooking spray

To prepare salsa, combine first nine ingredients; toss gently. Let stand 30 minutes before serving.  Prepare grill to medium-high heat. To prepare fish, combine lemon juice, oil, paprika and garlic in a large, shallow glass baking dish, stirring with a whisk. Add fish to juice mixture; turn to coat. Cover and let stand 15 minutes. Remove fish from marinade; discard marinade. Sprinkle fish evenly with salt and black pepper. Place fish on a grill rack coated with cooking spray; grill three minutes on each side or until desired degree of doneness. Serve fish with salsa.

2. Beef and Vegetable Kebabs

  • 1 lb beef sirloin, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh rosemary leaves
  • 1 red onion, cut into 1-inch pieces.
  • Either 3 large mushrooms cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 zucchini or yellow squash, cut into 3/4-inch rounds
  • 1 pint grape or cherry tomatoes
  • vegetable oil, for grill
  • coarse salt and ground pepper

In a medium bowl, combine beef, 1/4 cup olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, garlic and rosemary; toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate for four hours (or up to overnight). Let beef sit at room temperature, 30 minutes. Heat a grill or grill pan over high. In a medium bowl, combine mushrooms, onions, zucchini, tomatoes and 2 tbsp olive oil; toss to coat and season with salt and pepper. Season beef with salt and pepper. Alternately thread beef, mushrooms, onions, zucchini and tomatoes onto eight 8-inch skewers. Clean and lightly oil hot grill. Grill kebabs, turning occasionally, until beef is medium-rare and vegetables are tender, about 12 minutes.

3. Caprese Salad Bites

  • 60 red and/or yellow cherry tomatoes
  • 1 lb fresh feta or chevre cheese
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • Fresh chopped basil

With a serrated knife, cut off the top of each tomato. Remove seeds with a melon baller and cut a thin slice off the bottom of each. Place upside down on paper towels to drain. Stand upright. Place a small cube of cheese in each tomato. Drizzle with olive oil and vinegar. Garnish with basil.

4. Grilled Peaches over Arugula with Goat Cheese and Prosciutto

  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tsp honey
  • 3 peaches, pitted and each cut into 6 wedges
  • Cooking spray
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • Dash of kosher salt
  • 10 cups trimmed arugula (about 10 ounces)
  • 2 ounces thinly sliced prosciutto, cut into 1/4-inch strips
  • 2 tbsp crumbled goat cheese

Bring vinegar to a boil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Reduce heat, and simmer until vinegar is reduced to 2 tablespoons (about 2 minutes). Remove from heat; stir in honey. Cool to room temperature. Prepare grill to high heat. Place peach wedges on grill rack coated with cooking spray; grill 30 seconds on each side or until grill marks appear but peaches are still firm. Remove from grill; set aside. Combine oil, pepper and salt in a large bowl, stirring with a whisk. Add arugula, tossing gently to coat. Arrange arugula mixture on a platter. Top with peach wedges and prosciutto. Drizzle with balsamic syrup; sprinkle with cheese.

And for dessert:

5. Blueberry Peach Cobbler

  • 5 pounds peaches, peeled, pitted, and sliced
  • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 3/8 tsp salt, divided
  • 75 ounces (about 1 1/2 cups) plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, divided
  • Cooking spray
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups fresh blueberries
  • 2 tsp turbinado sugar

Preheat oven to 375°. Place peaches in a large bowl. Drizzle with juice; toss. Add 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and 2 tbsp flour to peach mixture; toss to combine. Arrange peach mixture evenly in a 13 x 9-inch glass or ceramic baking dish coated with cooking spray. Weigh or lightly spoon 6.75 ounces flour (about 1 1/2 cups) into dry measuring cups; level with a knife. Combine 6.75 ounces flour, remaining 1/4 tsp salt, and baking powder in a bowl, stirring well with a whisk. Place the remaining 1/4 cup granulated sugar and butter in a medium bowl, and beat with a mixer at medium speed until light and fluffy (about 2 minutes). Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract. Add flour mixture and buttermilk alternately to butter mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture, beating just until combined. Stir in blueberries. Spread batter evenly over peach mixture; sprinkle with turbinado sugar. Place baking dish on a foil-lined baking sheet. Bake at 375° for 1 hour or until topping is golden and filling is bubbly.

Spring break and binge watching Netflix go together like sun and sunglasses

Ah yes, another break from school is finally around the corner and when we come back, it will be for spring term, the best time of the year. Some can squeeze in a quick vacation during our short week off, but most catch up on as much R & R possible for seven straight days. Don’t even try to deny you’ll be rekindling your relationship with your Netflix account very soon, so why not give these TV shows a shot and buy a one-way ticket at the procrastination train station.

American Horror Story: If you’re afraid of your own shadow like I am, this may not be the best choice for you. For the daredevils, seasons one, two and three are all online.

Hawaii Five-O: This reboot of an old classic is almost like watching CSI but on the beautiful island of Oahu. Talk about wishing you were there for spring break instead of your couch…

Arrow: DC Comics’s fans, this is for you! Based off of the famous Green Arrow comic strips, this show brings a vengeful hero to save a city using only his bow and arrows.

Scandal: Everyone’s roommates favorite show but should the rest of us give it a chance? If political dramas and romance are your forte, you just found your binge watch series.

House Of Cards: Irrelevant because you probably already watched the entire new season yesterday.

Pretty Little Liars: If you don’t have enough unnecessary drama in your life, add Pretty Little Liars to your list and scream at your computer, “WHY WON’T THEY JUST CALL THE COPS?!

Dexter: Blood spatter analyst by day, serial killer by night. But it’s fine you guys, he’s killing other murders!

Friends: Re-watch your favorite sitcom as many times as you like! All 10 seasons are up on Netflix.

Gilmore Girls: Let the mother-daughter duo of Lorelai and Rory melt your heart all over again, as you will probably watch a season of this comedy a day.

Orange Is the New Black: Girl power and killer comedy make this one of the most popular Netflix original series, jump on that bandwagon and see what all of the fuss is about!

Parks and Recreation: A show that just aired its final episode last week can be lived all over again. 6 seasons are currently on Netflix.

The Magic School Bus: Hold the phone, WHHHATTT?!?! What better time to get nostalgic than a week of no school?
