Police: Sanford rape no longer a threat

Based on new information from the victim of a Sanford Hall sexual assault, the University of Minnesota Police Department has determined there is “no immediate and ongoing threat to public safety.”

UMPD Investigator Kevin Randolph said the case is no longer being investigated as a stranger sexual assault because of information the victim provided, but declined to give specifics about what she said.

Two robbed in SE Como

Two people were robbed in Southeast Como early Wednesday morning, according to a crime alert from University of Minnesota Police Chief Greg Hestness.

One of the victims is a University student and the other is unaffiliated with the school.

The two were talking outside their vehicles near the Como Student Community Cooperative at the intersection of 27th and Talmage avenues southeast when two suspects threatened them with a gun around 12:25 a.m., the alert said.

Rolling Stones to play TCF this summer

Minneapolis Rolling Stones fans will get some satisfaction this summer.

The band announced Tuesday that it will play at the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium on June 3 for their ZIP CODE tour.

“You can’t get much bigger than the Stones,” University Services spokesman Tim Busse said.

The group’s announcement is part of a larger effort from the University to attract bigger acts by adding The Rolling Stones to a summer line-up that already includes Luke Bryan and One Direction.

Police: video footage shows missing U student entering Mississippi

Video footage was discovered showing missing University of Minnesota student Jennifer Houle entering the Mississippi River from the 10th Avenue Bridge early Friday morning, police said Monday.

Authorities declined to say whether Houle jumped or fell off the bridge.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is assisting Minneapolis police in a water recovery effort, according to a press release from the Minneapolis Police Department.

Riverside residents protest management

Residents and community members lined Cedar Avenue outside the Riverside Plaza  Friday to protest the building’s management.

Nearly 100 people gathered for the demonstration, which is the second of its kind this month.

“They see us as voiceless and we need something to change,” said Faysal Hassan, a resident of the Plaza since 2006.

Residents took issue with broken elevators, a lack of guest parking and what some called harassment by management.

Police search for missing U student

Police are asking for the public’s help in searching for a University of Minnesota student who has been missing since early Friday morning.

Jennifer Houle, 22, was last seen at Blarney Pub and Grill in Dinkytown Friday between 1 and 2 a.m.

Houle is described as 5-foot-5 and 140 pounds with long blond hair. She was last seen wearing a black leather jacket, green blouse, black leggings, and boots.

Students stage Morrill Hall sit-in

Ten to 15 University of Minnesota students staged a sit-in in President Eric Kaler’s office in Morrill Hall around noon Monday.

Whose Diversity?, a group of mostly University students, put on the protest in response to the University’s lack of progress with the diversity-based demands the group made last spring.

University spokesman Steve Henneberry said Kaler spoke to the students, but would not comment on what was discussed.

Doran sells four U-area apartments

Doran Companies has sold four University-area student apartment complexes.

Residents in Dinkydome, Sydney Hall, the Edge on Oak and 412 Lofts received an email Monday night notifying them of their apartments’ new ownership under University Communities, a Denver-based company that focuses on purchasing and managing student housing.

UMPD sends two crime alerts over the weekend

A man was robbed at gunpoint around 2:30 a.m. in Marcy-Holmes Sunday morning, according to a crime alert from University of Minnesota Police Chief Greg Hestness.

The victim was unaffiliated with the University and lost his phone and wallet in the robbery, which took place on the footbridge near Van Cleve Park, according to Sunday’s alert.

The victim said four men approached him from behind wearing ski masks, threatened him with a gun and demanded his valuables. The men fled south on 14th Avenue Southeast.
