Administrative positions open at UO

The University of Oregon is hiring. After a long search for a new president and the hiring of Michael Schill, UO still isn’t done.

In an email to staff sent out Tuesday, interim president Scott Coltrane announced that the Dean of the Lundquist College of Business, Kees de Kluyver, is leaving the university to pursue research and teaching. Kluyver’s leave is effective September 15, 2015.

In the same email Coltrane said that the university is currently looking to fill five deanships from the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Journalism and Communications, the School of Architecture and Allied Arts and the Lundquist College of Business. The university is also searching for a new Vice President for Research and Innovation.

“We will launch the searching promptly with the goal of having all five positions hired and integrated by the beginning of the 2016 school year,” Coltrane said in the email. “As search committees are formed and the process advances, we will invite you to participate in the process.”

Dead week web wrap up

It’s week 10 at the University of Oregon, AKA the first time that some students visit the Knight Library. In case you’ve been in a Red Bull-induced haze, here’s the major headlines from around the web this week.

“Call Me Caitlyn”

Caitlyn Jenner introduced herself to the world on the cover of Vanity Fair, Monday. Since shedding her male identity as Bruce, the 65 year old olympian gained two million Twitter followers and counting, will receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2015 ESPYS, and was the subject of dozens of opinion editorials. Many praised Jenner for her bravery, President Barack Obama tweeted about Jenner’s courage.

In a post on her Tumblr blog  Orange Is The New Black actress and trans activist Laverne Cox wrote her support for Jenner. In the same post Cox wrote about the need to support trans women who do not or do not want, “to embody certain cisnormative beauty standards.”  Tuesday, Cox started the hashtag, #TransIsBeautiful, and many trans women are creating their own “Call Me ____” Vanity Fair covers.

Not all reactions were positive. An online petition requested that Jenner’s olympic medals be stripped, the International Olympic Committee has since responded that it was not an issue.

Oregon Olympic silver medalist accused of doping

University of Oregon alumni and Olympic silver medalist Galen Rupp was accused of using performance enhancing drugs, Wednesday. An investigation by ProPublica and the BBC alleges that Rupp has used a banned form of testosterone since his high school running career at Central Catholic High School.

In response to the allegations Rupp said, “I expressly told these reporters that these allegations were not true and their sources admit they have no evidence, yet they print ‘suspicions’ attacking me and sullying my reputation.”

What happened online this week

For those of us dealing with impending finals it can be hard to do things like clean your room, eat a proper meal or check Twitter. Here’s help with the last one.

FIFA under fire

The US Department of Justice indicted FIFA officials and executives for corruption, Wednesday at a Swiss hotel. FIFA, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, was indicted on 47 different counts of wrong doing over a 24 year period.

“They were expected to uphold the rules that keep soccer honest, and protect the integrity of the game,” Attorney General Loretta Lynch said. “Instead, they corrupted the business of worldwide soccer to serve their interests and enrich themselves.”

Duggers controversy

TLC suspended 19 Kids and Counting, but has yet to cancel the show, after molestation allegations came out. The show about conservative family has been highly criticized after news broke that son Josh Duggar allegedly molested five underage girls. The internet has plenty to say about this. Some critics argue that TLC should have canceled the show already, many criticize the Duggar family for supporting Josh over the survivors.

The story has already been highly spoofed on shows like the Nightly Show, the Daily Show and Funny or Die.

Ireland becomes the first country to legalize same sex marriage

Week 7 web wrap up

Here’s the week’s big headlines, the Cliffs Notes version.

More headlines about George Zimmerman and self defense, but it’s not what you’d expect

The Florida man acquitted for killing Trayvon Martin, an unarmed African-American teen, back in 2012 was shot Monday. Matthew Apperson shot Zimmerman, fatally, claiming that it was self defense. The two have been involved in a series of confrontations this year. Back in September, the two were involved in a road rage incident and Apperson told police that Zimmerman had followed him.

Apperson’s lawyer, Mark NeJames, said that, “In light of the two previous reports Mr. Apperson filed, and in light of the various public reports concerning Mr. Zimmerman and allegations of violence, including the use of a firearm, Mr. Apperson’s act of self-defense was entirely legally justified.”

Eight confirmed dead in an Amtrak train crash

Tuesday night, an Amtrak train headed from Washington D.C. to New York derailed after the train engineer took a curve at 106 miles per hour. The engineer’s lawyer told Good Morning America that Brandon Bostonian was unconscious at the time of the crash that left over 200 people injured and eight reported dead so far.

Thursday Amtrak’s CEO, Joseph Boardman, said that it would finish installing a new safety software called positive train control in the Northeast by the end of the year.

A pile of TV shows got canceled

It’s that time of year again. Here’s a partial list of TV shows that go the axe this spring: The Following, American Idol, Glee, Revenge, Hart of Dixie, Constantine, Forever, Marry Me, Mulaney, The Millers and more. Rest in TV peace.
