No. 23 Houston women’s golf finishes fourth at Collegiate Invitational

No. 23 Houston women’s golf finished fourth at 10 over 874 in the Collegiate Invitational at Guadalajara Country Club in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.

The Cougars were led by junior Moa Svendenskiold who finished fifth at 3 under 213.

In the opening round, the Cougars were led by Svendenskiold as she completed her first round at 4 under 68 with eight birdies. Junior Alexa Saldana finished close behind at even par 72 with two birdies to call her own.

Meanwhile, junior Natalie Saint Germain ended at 1 over 73 with two birdies. Despite scoring an eagle on No. 12 and a single birdie on No. 17, freshman Annika Ishiyama finished her round at 5 over 77.

Sophomore Maelynn Kim concluded at 6 over 78 with two birdies.

Playing as an independent, senior Hyeonji Kang finished Houston’s opening round at 2 over 74 with 3 birdies.

Onto the second round on Saturday morning, Ishiyama improved from her previous round and finished at even par 72 with three birdies.

Right behind was Svedenskiold at 1 over 73 with three birdies of her own.

The remaining Cougars, Saldana, Kim, Saint Germain and Kang concluded their second round with the same result at 3 over 75. Saldana with three birdies, Kim with four birdies and Kang with two birdies.

In the third round, Kim and Svedenskiold improved from the second round as Kim finished at 1 under 71 with four birdies and Svedenskiold at even par with two birdies.

Saldana, Saint Germain and Kang concluded their round at 1 over 73, with both Saldana and Saint Germain scoring five birdies each and Kang with three birdies.

Ishiyama finished at 9 over 81 with a single birdie.

The Cougars will next compete at the Chevron Collegiate at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas on Feb. 24-25.

Cougars compete at Windon Memorial Classic and Bayou City Collegiate Classic

Houston men’s golf placed ninth at 19-over 871 in the Windon Memorial Classic hosted by Northwestern University at the Conway Farms Golf Course in Lake Forest, Ill.

Senior Laurenz Schiergen led the way as he tied for twelfth at even-par 213.

Into the opening round for the Windon Memorial, Schiergen finished his round at 1-over 72 despite earning four birdies.

Not far behind was senior Jacob Borow, who concluded his round at 4-over 75 with a single birdie.

Right after Borow, junior Hudson Weibel ended his round at 5-over 76 with 2 birdies.

Meanwhile, sophomore Chi Chun Chen and senior Wolfgang Glawe closed their opening round at 6-over 77, with Chen scoring two birdies and Glawe, with a single birdie.

As the second round went on, each cougar scored three birdies.

Both Borow and Chen ended their round at even-par 71. Schiergen improved upon his previous placement, finishing at 1-under 70. Not far behind were Weibel at 2-over 73 and Glawe at 4-over 75.

The Cougars all improved their scoring in the final round at Windon Memorial, as every golfer scored four birdies to each call their own.

Chen led the team at 1-under 70, with Schiergen behind at even-par 71.

The remaining Cougars placed in order, Borow at 1-over 72, Weibel at 2-over 73 and Glawe at 3-over 74.

Onto the Bayou City Collegiate Classic, three Cougars represented the University as independents.

Junior Bryant Hiskey II led the charge and tied at twenty-third at 2-under 214 at the Westwood Golf Club in Houston.

Upon the opening round of the tournament, sophomore Grant Doggett swung seven birdies, finishing his first round at 2-under 70.

Not far behind, Hiskey scored four birdies and ended his round at 1-under 71, meanwhile, junior Ruben Lindsay earned two birdies of his own despite concluding his round at 12-over 84.

Immediately into the second round, Hiskey remained consistent. Nearly repeating his first-round performance, the junior only fell one birdie short with three birdies at 1-under 71.

Despite swinging five birdies to call his own, Doggett had finished his second round at even-par 72, as for Lindsay, the junior improved upon his previous rounds’ performance, concluding at 4-over 76 with two birdies.

Closing into the final round, Hiskey led the independent Cougars at even-par 72 with four birdies.

With five birdies to call his own, Lindsay gave his best performance this tournament at 1-over 73, closing out his run at the Collegiate Classic.

Not far behind was Doggett, who had finished at 5-over 77 with two birdies.

The Cougars are now competing in the Big 12 Match Play Tournament in The Clubs at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas, until Oct. 9

Houston men’s golf places second at Argent Financial Classic

Houston men’s golf placed second at the Argent Financial Classic at the par-72 Squire Creek Country Club course in Choudrant, Louisiana, scoring 1-under 287.

Sophomore Chi Chun Chen and senior Jacob Borow led the way, tying for fifth at 3-under 213.

After Sunday’s first round, Chen led the Cougars, who finished at 2-under 70 with five birdies, followed by Borow at 1-under 71 with a single eagle and two birdies.

The remaining Cougars finished above par 72. Both junior Hudson Weibel and senior Wolfgang Glawe finished at 1-over 73, scoring a single eagle and birdie each.

Senior Laurenz Schiergen started his week at 5-over 77 with a sole birdie.

Meanwhile, sophomore Grant Doggett competed individually and finished at 6-over 78 with a single birdie.

After the second round, Borow improved from his previous round by finishing at 3-under 69 with four birdies.

Schiergen improved at 2-under 70 with one eagle and two birdies. Not far behind was Chen, who finished his round at 1-under 71 with four birdies.

While Glawe ended his round at even-par 72 with two birdies, Weibel had finished at 1-over 73 with a single eagle and two birdies and Doggett ended at 5-over 77 with one birdie.

Rounding things off with the third and final round of the tournament, both Chen and Glawe finished their round at even-par 72, with Chen swinging three birdies while Glawe swung four.

Despite swinging five birdies, Borow ended his tournament at 1-over 73 while both Weibel and Schiergen finished at 2-over 74, with Weibel swinging two birdies and Schiergen swinging three.

Finally, Doggett concluded his tournament at 3-over 75 with two birdies.

The Cougars will next compete in the Windon Memorial Classic hosted by Northwestern University at the Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Illinois. Sept. 29 and 30.

NCAA Regionals marks end of season for men’s golf

Houston men’s golf fell short of advancing to the next round for the NCAA Regionals last week at The University Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The Cougars finished in sixth place 870 with senior Santiago De La Fuente leading the way with a 14th place 216 finish. 

During the first round Monday morning, junior Wolfgang Glawe led the Cougars with the best round at 4-under (68) with three birdies. Immediately after Glawe, freshman Grant Doggett finished his opening round at even-par (72) with four birdies.

Meanwhile De La Fuente ended his opening round at 1-over (73) with five birdies, senior Austyn Reily finished 4-over (76) with four birdies and junior Jacob Borow ended his round at 6-over (78) with five birdies.

In the second round on Tuesday morning, De La Fuente improved his performance finishing at 1-under (71) sinking three birdies, giving the only under-par performance from the Cougars.

Reily also improved, ending at 1-over (73) with three birdies. Not far behind was Borow who ended his round at 2-over (74) with four birdies improving his performance from the previous round. Doggett finished his round at 6-over (78) with four birdies while Glawe ended his second round at 8-over (80) with five birdies.

In Wednesday morning’s final round, De La Fuente and Reily finished at even-par (72) with De La Fuente sinking four birdies and Reily scoring three birdies respectively.

Borow finished his tournament at 2-under (70) with only a single birdie while Glawe ended his round at 1-under (71) with three birdies. Doggett improved from his previous round, ending his tournament at 3-over (75) with three birdies of his own.

Houston women’s golf just shy of advancing past Auburn Regional

The No.7 seed Houston women’s golf team tied for 6th with the University of Georgia at 28-over (892) in the Auburn Regional at Auburn University Club in Auburn, Alabama. Sophomore Moa Svedenskiold led the way tying for 5th place at 1-under (215).

After the opening round on Monday morning, the Cougars finished the day in third. Svedenskiold gave the best performance amongst the Cougars reaching 72 with two birdies.

Both sophomore Alexa Saldana and freshman Maelynn Kim started their rounds of the Auburn Regional at 2-over (74) with Saldana sinking five birdies and Kim swinging only a single birdie.

Senior Nicole Abelar began her round at 6-over (78) with five birdies. 

Meanwhile junior Hyeonji Kang started her round with four birdies of her own and finished at 7-over (79).

Tuesday saw UH rise to second. Svedenskiold improved her overall performance by finishing her second round at 3-under (69) with only a single birdie.

Saldana continued her tournament at 1-over (73), sinking five birdies. Kang also improved her score, ending her second round at 3-over (75) with four birdies.

With eight birdies to her name, Abelar finished her second round at 4-over (76). Kim had a tough second round and finished 11-over (83) with two birdies.

In the final round on Wednesday morning, Svedenskiold finished her tournament at 2-over (74), sinking three birdies of her own. Abelar ended her round at 3-over (75) with five birdies.

Both Saldana and Kang finished their tournament at 4-over (76) with Saldana and Kang sinking four and five birdies respectively. Natalie Saint Germain filled in for Kim and finished her round at 6-over (78) with three birdies.

Although the Coogs fell short of advancing to the NCAA championships, the appearance marks the second straight year Houston has competed as a No. 7 seed at an NCAA Regional, tying with the 2017-18 team for the highest seeding in UH history.

De La Fuente ties for fourth, UH golf ties for sixth at Big 12 Championship

UH’s men’s golf team finished tied for 6th at 7-over alongside Texas Tech after four rounds at the Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas in its first Big 12 Championship. The team was led by senior Santiago De La Fuente who finished tied for fourth at 7-under.

In the opening round Monday morning, De La Fuente led the Cougars at 2-under (70), meanwhile, junior Wolfgang Glawe was close behind De La Fuente starting his tournament at 1-under (71) with two birdies of his own. Both senior Austyn Reily and junior Jacob Borow began their week at 1-over with both Reily and Borow sinking four birdies of their own respectively. Freshman Chi Chun Chen started his week at 9-over (81).

Upon the second round, De La Fuente remained under par at 1-under, and Glawe finished at even-par (72) with a single birdie. Reily ended his second round at 2-over (74) with four birdies as Borow finished his round at 6-over with two birdies. Chen ended his round at 7-over with three birdies.

The Cougars improved into the third round as De La Fuente remained under par at 1-under with a single birdie. Both Reily and Glawe both improved from their previous round as they finished their third round at 3-under (69) with Reily and Glawe sinking a single birdie respectively. Borow ended his third round at 4-over (76) with four birdies meanwhile junior Laurenz Schiergen opened his round at 5-over (77) with three birdies.

Finally into the fourth and final round of the Big 12 Championship, De La Fuente remained under par at 3-under while Reily stayed at even-par (72) with four birdies on the day. Glawe ended his tournament at 2-over with two birdies to place 13th overall. Borow finished at 5-over in the final round and placed 54th in the tournament.

UH women’s golf goes for sixth in first Big 12 Championship

The Houston women’s golf team placed sixth in the Big 12 Championship in Hockley, Texas over the weekend. Sophomore Moa Svedenskiold led the Cougars as she finished her weekend tied for fifth place.

In the opening round Friday morning, both sophomores Svedenskiold and Alexa Saldana began their weekend on an even-par 71 with Svedenskiold sinking four birdies and Saldana with three. Senior Nicole Abelar started her opening round at 1-over (72) with six birdies, including three straight on the back nine. Junior Hyeonji Kang began her round at 3-over (74).

Into the second round Saturday morning, Svedenskiold had improved her performance, ending her second round at 2-under (69) with only two birdies. Kang also improved her swings by finishing her second round at even-par with only a single birdie.

Saldana ended at 1-over with three birdies, Abelar finished her second round at 3-over with two birdies and freshman Maelynn Kim finished at 5-over.

Finally, in the third round, Svedenskiold ended her weekend at 1-over with two birdies. Kim finished her round at 5-over-par sinking the most birdies out of all the Cougars with seven. Saldana, despite six birdies to her name in the round, ended at 6-over.

Both Abelar and Kang finished their weekend with five birdies respectively with Abelar ending with 2-over and Kang at 11-over. 

UH finished in sixth place overall at 20-over for the tournament.

UH women’s golf earns fifth place in The Match Play

The UH Women’s Golf team finished The Match Play in fifth place Tuesday afternoon as 7-seed Houston defeated 6-seed Tulane and 5-seed Kansas State on Tuesday.

The Match Play began on Monday afternoon when Houston lost to 2-seed Tulsa 4-1-0 as sophomore Alexa Saldana gained the only point for the Cougars as she defeated Tulsa’s Allyn Stephens. Tulsa took control of the remainder of the round.

Sophomore Moa Svedenskiold fell to Lovisa Gunnar, junior Hyeonji Kang came up short to Grace Kilcrease, senior Nicole Abelar lost to Jenni Roller, and junior Brooke Morales fell to Sydney Seigel respectively.

The Cougars were rejuvenated the following morning in the Semifinals as Houston defeated Tulane 3-1-1. Despite Abelar’s draw and Morales just coming up short, UH won the remaining three matchups of the morning.

Saldana defeated Tulane’s Miriam Emmert by a stroke, while Svedenskiold and Kang grabbed points for UH. The Cougars learned from their mistakes from the first-round quarterfinals as they took their win in the semifinals and headed to face 5-seed Kansas State in the finals later that afternoon.

Although Kansas State had earned two points early on, the Cougars were able to finish the final round on top as Svedenskiold, Kang and Abelar all came up with wins.

UH tennis falls in home finales to No. 1 OSU and No. 74 Kansas State

The Houston Cougars Tennis program lost to No. 1 Oklahoma State 4-0 on Friday before losing to No. 74 Kansas State Wildcats 4-1 in the team’s home finale two days later.

Match 1

In doubles play, sophomores Sonya Kovalenko and Sophie Schouten fell to Oklahoma State’s Anastasiya Komar and Ange Oby Kajuru 6-3. The Cowboys gained their point in when Oklahoma State’s Safiya Carrington and Kristina Novak defeated junior Elena Trencheva and senior Blanca Cortijo Parreno, 6-3.

In singles play, the Sooners continued their dominating presence in court 4 with Oklahoma State’s Ayumi Miyamoto defeating Cortijo Parreno in straight sets. Schouten had put up a small fight before falling to Safiya Carrington, 6-2, 6-0. Meanwhile, over in court two, senior Laura Slisane was the closest in winning a set but was defeated in straight sets as well.

Match 2

In doubles play against Kansas State, the Cougars earned their sole point of the game when Cortijo Parreno and Trencheva defeated Kansas State’s Jillian Harkin and Manami Ukita, 4-6. Slisane and junior Maria Dzemeshkevich defeated Maria Santos and Maralgoo Chogsomjav 4-6.

In singles play, Kansas State made a clean sweep in four courts, where Cortijo Parreno lost to Tereza Polakova 7-5, 7-5 while Dzemeshkevich and Cortes both fell in straight sets. On court five, Trencheva was able to win a set but again fell short to Manami Ukita, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.

UH dropped to 2-16 on the season and will finish out the regular season with trips to Kansas and Iowa State next weekend.

UH golf goes for 14th at Valspar Collegiate Invitational

The Houston Cougars men’s golf program placed 14th at 20-over Tuesday afternoon at the Floridian National Golf Club for the Valspar Collegiate Invitational in Palm City, Florida. 

The team was led by senior Santiago De La Fuente who tied for 13th at 2-under (211) and not far behind was junior Laurenz Schiergen who tied for 15th at 1-under as an Individual.

Teeing off on Monday morning, Schiergen swung the least amount of strokes for Houston at 3-under earning five birdies. De La Fuente finished his opening round at 2-over with three birdies. Both freshman Chi Chun Chen and junior Wolfgang Glawe ended their starting round at 4-over with Chen swinging six birdies. As for the remaining Cougars, senior Austyn Reily, junior Jacob Borow and freshman Grant Dogget ended their opening round at 5-over.

Rolling into Monday afternoon, Da La Fuente improved by two strokes ending his day at even-par with four birdies. Glawe finished at 1-over with four birdies of his own. Both Schiergen and Borow ended their Monday at 2-over.

Ending things off on Tuesday morning, De La Fuente continued to improve yet again by ending his day at an impressive 4-under with a single eagle on No. 13 and four birdies. Not far behind, Doggett had improved from the previous round finishing his Tuesday at 2-under with four birdies of his own. Glawe, Borow and Schiergen had ended their rounds at even-par with all three earning four birdies to their name. Reily finished his round at 2-over while Chen ended his round at 3-over.

UH will compete in its final regular season event on April 12-13 at the Thunderbird Invitational.
