Fraternity makes a comeback

By: Melissa Berman

After being gone nearly 80 years, the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity is returning to the University of Minnesota campus this fall.

The fraternity is starting recruitment this week, rebuilding the organization from scratch.

National Vice President Matt Humberger said the University chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi is the fraternity’s 17th oldest.

“Anytime we have the opportunity to restart such a historic chapter of ours, it’s definitely something we’re really excited about,” he said.

Students stake a claim

By: Hailey Colwell

Pressing a small white flag into the ground outside of Coffman Union on Monday, urban studies senior Stephanie Zadora claimed the land for herself.

She was one of several University of Minnesota students who planted flags in front of Coffman to symbolize how colonists claimed land as their own when they first arrived in America.

Kill made the right decision, ya feel me?

By: Samuel Gordon

I wish the Daily published on Fridays; then I wouldn’t have had to wait so long to weigh in on Jerry Kill’s leave of absence.

It’s old news now, but the Gophers’ third-year head coach stepped away from the team to focus on his epilepsy treatment.

Minnesota athletics director Norwood Teague and Kill’s longtime defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys made the announcement last Thursday.

U supports rural majors

By: Hailey Colwell

Growing up near Plymouth, Minn., Luke Midura watched as developers turned the farmland and woods near his home into suburban dwellings.

The University of Minnesota senior chose to major in forest and natural resource management because, he said, he takes it personally when land is developed in ways that aren’t ecologically sound.

Though his major could lead to a job in a rural area, Midura and other University students in similar fields still choose the urban-based University because of the quality of its programs.

Few groups jump to endorse

By: Alexi Gusso

The University of Minnesota’s Socialist Alternative Club is endorsing a political candidate for the first time in the group’s history.

The Young Americans for Liberty student group isn’t endorsing anyone, and neither are the University’s College Republicans.

Some University student groups are endorsing candidates in the upcoming city elections, but other politically active organizations aren’t because they could lose funding or because there isn’t an endorsed member from their party on the ballot.

Minnesota falls to Penn State in five

By: Megan Ryan

On paper, the Gophers volleyball team and Penn State were evenly matched with identical 3-1 conference records and only two total losses on the season.

And the five-set match Wednesday night proved it.

No. 11 Minnesota lost a close five-set thriller to No. 4 Penn State in University Park, Pa. The match was tit for tat, with the Nittany Lions taking the first, third and fifth sets and the Gophers nabbing the ones in between. The average winning margin was just less than four points.

Hobbs helps save season in first year

By: Jace Frederick

There aren’t enough superlatives in the dictionary to describe Tarah Hobbs’ performance in the net for the Gophers through five Big Ten matches.

So, maybe the numbers can do the talking.

Hobbs ranks top five in the Big Ten in every major goalkeeper statistic. She leads the conference in save percentage (.873) and saves per game (5.50).

And she’s only a freshman.

“She honestly saves our butt day in and day out,” senior defender Lauren Bauer said Oct. 1. “She’s played incredible. I love her.”

Edward Brown reported a theft by swindle Thursday after paying a man who claimed to be a landlord $600.

Brown and his girlfriend were trying to find a home together after she moved out of her apartment in Stadium Village on short notice.

Brown found a house on Craigslist and contacted the man who claimed to be the landlord, according to a Minneapolis police report. Brown said man was the only landlord who responded to his messages.

“He acted like it was his house,” Brown said, “We had nowhere to go.”

U moms could get more resources

By: Roy Aker

New mothers at the University of Minnesota could soon get more resources on campus.

The University Senate passed a resolution at its Thursday meeting that could increase the number of lactation rooms and centralize resources for those at the University who are breastfeeding children.

The resolution, which was proposed by the Social Concerns Committee, calls for the University to review existing lactation resources and investigate how to improve them.
