Serratores come together at Bemidji

The Serratore family will descend on Bemidji, Minn., this weekend for the nonconference series between Bemidji State and Gophers men’s hockey.

Moms, sisters, brothers, grandpas and at least two Toms will either attend, coach or play in this weekend’s series.

Gophers senior forward Tom Serratore will play against his uncle, Beavers head coach Tom Serratore, for possibly the last time in his Minnesota career while on the road this Friday and Saturday.

Bohl breaks starting lineup in libero position

By: David Nelson

For a position that isn’t even counted as an official starter, the libero offers more than the stat sheet shows.

Although a libero’s main statistical category is digs, her impact on the game can far exceed a simple bump.

For two consecutive seasons, the Gophers have primarily started two players at the position — junior Morgan Bohl and sophomore Lindsey Lawmaster.

And after two seasons on a “libero carousel,” it looks like the Gophers have found their starter — at least for now.

Wildcats wide open before matchup

By: Jack Satzinger

After two straight losses and a bye week, the Gophers haven’t won a game since Sept. 21. Heading into a road trip against Northwestern, which has been ranked for much of the season, conventional wisdom suggests the Gophers will be eaten up by the Wildcats’ strong offense.

But after two straight losses of its own, Northwestern is unranked for the first time this season.

The Wildcats showed little fight in a 35-6 loss at Wisconsin last week, but that was largely due to injuries.

Claeys steps in, stays the course

By: Nate Gotlieb

Tracy Claeys may be the Gophers’ acting head coach, but he’s not stressing the “head coach” part of the job title.

“It’s Jerry Kill’s program,” Claeys, the defensive coordinator, said at a press conference Tuesday. “Besides those decisions in game management, we’ll do it just like coach Kill does.”

Minnesota players said Tuesday the team is preparing for its game against Northwestern on Saturday as it normally would. But they also said Kill and Claeys have somewhat different coaching styles.

Student group forms to support Hodges

By: Alexi Gusso

With 35 candidates on the November ballot, some University of Minnesota students are joining to support their favorite mayoral contender.

Urban Studies senior Andrew Degerstrom, co-founder of Students Unite for Betsy Hodges, said voting for the next mayor of Minneapolis is a “no-brainer.”

The student group formed last month for the sole purpose of supporting current Ward 13 City Councilwoman Betsy Hodges and getting other students to back her mayoral campaign.

For students who are not ’21 or over’

By: Alma Pronove

College students don’t always think about the consequences before handing over their fake.

University of Minnesota students who use falsified IDs put themselves at risk of a misdemeanor, but some are willing to take that chance for booze.

Despite the consequences for owning a falsified identification card, University sophomore Addie said she will keep using hers to buy alcohol and get into bars.

“I don’t feel like anyone is going to call the cops,” she said.

Dr. Date

Dr. Date,

About a year ago, I met this guy from New York at a bar. He was only in town for one night because his band was playing a show at First Ave. We hit it off, and he asked for my number. He also said that if I’m ever in New York, I should call him up. I was flattered at the time but knew it wasn’t very realistic that we’d ever see each other again.

Secret Admirers

To the chef in Sanford who looks like Prince William:

I’ll make you feel like a king any day.

Sincerely,

—At Your Service

To the guy in the pastel windbreaker doing laundry in Comstock:

I hope we meet again, and when we do, I hope you’re still wearing that jacket. ONLY the jacket.

—The girl trying not to make it obvious that she was checking you out the whole time

To whoever was playing “The Pursuit of Happiness” on the piano in Coffman today:

More e-learning, but low interest

By: Katelyn Faulks

Students and faculty are divided about the value of e-learning, despite the University of Minnesota’s goal to expand learning opportunities by creating more fully and partially online courses.

While online course enrollment has steadily increased in recent years, only about 13 percent of students and about 7 percent of faculty members said they prefer online classes to traditional ones, according to a 2012 survey from the University’s Office of Information Technology.
