It’s early in the season, but in Minnesota’s first real test of the season against No. 8 Syracuse, it became pretty obvious that it ain’t easy without the Big Easy on the floor.

Around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, University of Minnesota students and faculty members stopped to watch Chad Klecker and Jeffrey Hayes remove shoes from three of the well-known “shoe trees” bordering the West Bank side of the Washington Avenue Bridge.
Hayes said they were told to remove as many shoes as possible from the three trees closest to land while leaving the original shoe tree untouched. When asked if he knew why the University wanted the shoes removed, he said, “I think it was because it’s unsightly.”

After losing office space in Coffman Union’s second floor redesign earlier this year, 17 student groups have settled into new meeting spots and routines.
For some groups, losing space has caused storage issues and difficulty reaching out to students. Though they no longer hold permanent space in Coffman, many groups are still there vying for multi-use space or paying for rooms.
The African Student Association used that space to hold office hours, store supplies and connect with students who had questions about the group.
