Gophers falter in tourney

Minnesota struggled last weekend at the Windon Memorial, turning in a 13th-place finish.

Those problems persisted this weekend at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, as the Gophers finished second-to-last in the field.

“Unfortunately, we made some of the same mistakes that we made in Chicago [at the Windon Memorial] as a team,” head coach John Carlson said. “We just have to continue to get better.”

Carlson said the team’s ball striking has been inconsistent all season.

Penn State snaps Gophers’ winning streak

By: Rachel Timmerman

The heat was high and the Sports Pavilion was packed as the Gophers closed out their first week of conference play Saturday.

Despite the buzz, Minnesota lost to the reigning national champions, No. 3 Penn State, in four sets.

The Gophers took control in the first set but faltered in the second and third, and there was noticeable frustration on Minnesota’s side of the net.

“We were trying to force a few things to recreate the magic of set one,” head coach Hugh McCutcheon said. “When we start forcing shots, it seldom turns out well for us.”

After being a head football coach for 21 years, Kill knows numerous football philosophies as well.

And this year, he found a way to blend his farm and football ideologies.

“You got a good horse, ride him,” Kill said Saturday regarding Gophers senior running back David Cobb. “That’s what I was taught by my daddy a long time ago.”

Time to end gender stereotypes

By: Destanie Martin-Johnson

Ever since I can remember, media have taught me that girls are supposed to be softhearted and gentle, whereas boys are supposed to be tough and fearless. Even in the Disney movies I watched so many times as a kid, the hero was usually an extremely buff male who prevails over his enemy in an aggressive fight in the end scene.
