“Typical Gophers” is perhaps the only way to explain what transpired Saturday afternoon when Minnesota lost to arguably the worst team in the Big Ten.
Illinois walked all over the Gophers in the first half, and Minnesota simply couldn’t find a way out of the hole it dug itself into, ending the game with a 28-24 loss.
With the Gophers lacking energy and effort, Illinois’ No. 114 defense found a way to bottle up the Gophers’ offense for the first 30 minutes of the game.

After briefly falling to No. 2 in the rankings, the Gophers have reclaimed the top spot in college hockey. And they showed this weekend why they never should have moved.
After defeating No. 9 North Dakota 5-2 on Friday, the No. 1 Gophers (7-0-1, 5-0-1 WCHA) returned Saturday afternoon and won in a dominating fashion.
The Gophers shut out North Dakota on just seven shots, and they recorded 51 shots of their own on their way to a 5-0 victory.

In a recent editorial, “New staple food ordinance unwise,” the Minnesota Daily Editorial Board called a proposed Minneapolis City Council ordinance “misguided.” There are many University of Minnesota faculty members who strongly disagree.

The Gophers will showcase their younger racers this weekend at Jack’s Twilight Run.
In preparation for the Big Ten championships in early November, Minnesota’s top runners will be resting, but head coach Sarah Hopkins said she expects younger team members to compete at a high level.
“We do have a really young group, and I think with a young group comes that desire to really prove yourself,” she said. “I think that’ll add a little fuel to the fire.”

The Gophers’ freshman class dominated the team’s starting lineup in its last tournament, taking three of five spots.
Early on, the freshman trio has made an immediate impact on the course.
But it was two of the team’s seniors who led in the third tournament of the season.
Carmen Laguna and Anna Laorr competed in all 11 tournaments as juniors last season and led the team on the course.
Laguna averaged 74.2 strokes per round and Laorr was at 75.3, tops on the team last season.

Dr. Date,
My boyfriend and I met before summer and had all of summer’s free time to just have fun and hang out.
Now that school has started and he has a million other things to do, I feel like I’m always the one that tries to see if we can hang out — which only happens once or twice a week for about an hour or so.

This fall, the University of Minnesota is celebrating five years of sustainability efforts.
University Services kick-started the “It All Adds Up” campaign in 2009 with the goal of reducing energy consumption on campus and creating a greener community.
While the school has saved energy on a variety of new projects in recent years, some sustainability leaders say more needs to be done if campus is to become more environmentally friendly.

Rachel Banham dropped 15 points in the first game of her collegiate career nearly three years ago.
In her debut performance, the guard led her team in scoring.
Fast-forward to Banham’s senior year and not much has changed.
Though she likely has the most talented supporting cast since she began college, Banham will still shoulder a major load of the Gophers’ offense.

For what seemed like the first time in a long time, Minnesota traveled to face the Wisconsin Badgers last weekend as the second-best team in the nation.
After tying Minnesota-Duluth the week before, the No. 2 Gophers needed to earn their title back from top-ranked Wisconsin.
Though it needed some extra time on Saturday night, Minnesota took care of business in Wisconsin and found itself back on top of the college hockey world Monday.
And the Gophers will likely not move in the rankings again for the remainder this season.

The Gophers’ midfield has not been short on success this season. But right now, it may be short on players.
Freshman Rachel McCloskey, who made an impact early on this season, watched her team lose 4-1 to Wisconsin Saturday night from the sideline while propped up by crutches.
During that game, the Gophers saw another starting midfielder and a key team leader, senior Katie Thyken, get hurt.
