Gophers fall short in NC

By: Danny Chen

The Gophers entered their meet against North Carolina State this weekend undefeated — they had won six consecutive dual meets.

But that came to an abrupt halt, as the Wolfpack beat the Gophers 199-154.

Junior Kierra Smith had first-place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke and 400-yard individual medley.

But her performance wasn’t enough to boost the rest of the team in the meet, which was its first after the winter break.

Gophers dominate Falcons for first win

Freshman Jack Kramer blew the doors wide open for Minnesota by scoring a 14.75 on the floor in the first routine.

“What a great start, not only did he do a great routine, but he stuck his dismount,” head coach Mike Burns said. “I turned to the team and everyone was smiling ear to ear.”

That performance set the tone for the rest of meet on Saturday against Air Force, as the Gophers beat the Falcons 425.100-407.150.

Minnesota tops top-10 Penn State

By: Danny Chen

The Gophers fell short of a national championship last year, only losing to Penn State.

The No. 1 Gophers came up on top on Sunday, outplaying the No. 6 Nittany Lions 17-16 to remain undefeated in the season.

This is the second consecutive year the Gophers defeated Penn State by one point in the regular season.

“We split [the meet] five to five,” head assistant coach Brandon Eggum said. “There were a lot of tough [matchups], but we were just proud that the guys are continuing every weekend to get out there and finding ways to win.”

Minnesota finishes Border Battle on top

By: Grant Donald

As with most things that haven’t happened for 37 years, the dual meet between Wisconsin and Minnesota has some wrinkles that need to be ironed out moving forward.

However, fixing the men’s rivalry trophy probably wasn’t high on the list of anticipated problems.

As the Gophers took their victory lap with the new trophy after a dominating 98-59 victory over Wisconsin, somewhere, somehow, the trophy broke.

Gophers dominate SCSU in sweep

By: Grant Donald

When senior goaltender Shyler Sletta decided to continue her hockey career at the University of Minnesota, head coach Brad Frost didn’t guarantee her any playing time.

That didn’t matter to Sletta, who made her second-career start in Friday’s 4-0 victory over St. Cloud State. Minnesota completed the sweep with a 7-1 victory over the Huskies on Saturday.

“Shyler is the constant team player,” Frost said. “She works her butt off in practice and competes every day, and she deserved to start.”

Gophers place last in annual tourney

By: Ben Gotz

Head coach Don Lucia said the third period on Saturday represented how things have been going for his team lately.

Almost 18 minutes of late dominance had allowed the Gophers to tie No. 7 Minnesota-Duluth, and the team looked set to score again or take the game into overtime.

Lucia said after the game he thought his team may have been finding itself again, but a late Duluth goal ended the team’s momentum and gave them a last-place finish in the North Star College Cup.

Hollins’ complete game powers Gophers

By: Jack Satzinger

Illinois’ Malcolm Hill drove to the baseline early in the second half and cocked the ball back behind his head, preparing to dunk over Bakary Konaté.

No dice.

Instead of being flushed through the rim, the ball was blocked out of bounds.

But it wasn’t Minnesota’s 6-foot-11-inch center that swatted the would-be dunk into the stands. It was Andre Hollins, a 6-foot-2-inch guard who’s widely regarded as a one-dimensional sharpshooter, who darted from the weak side for the block.

Officials lay out spending

In one of their first Capitol visits this legislative session, University of Minnesota officials presented on the institution’s spending at a Senate committee on Thursday.

The University’s conversations with legislators could continue until May, as the school is hoping to secure extra funding. Its 2016-17 biennial budget request asks for a funding boost to cover a new tuition freeze, as well as other projects.

Minnesota begins season with two wins

By: Danny Chen

Dropping just one match Saturday against two opponents, the Gophers men’s tennis team began the season with a 2-0 record — the first time since 2009.

The Gophers hosted Marquette University and South Dakota State University and were able to dominate the doubles competition in both meets, which gave them a one-point lead going into the singles competition.

Head coach Geoff Young said he always watches the doubles competition carefully.
