Column: Gophers need to find Hollins’ partner in crime over break

By: David Nelson

Andre Hollins sat in Minnesota’s locker room with a smile draped across his face as he took questions from the media following the Gophers’ third conference victory of the season on Saturday.

And why shouldn’t he be smiling?

Hollins has performed phenomenally over the past five contests — scoring more than 21 points per game.

Pitino alters style during struggles

By: Jack Satzinger

Minnesota is 10 games into its conference season, and hardly anything has been constant.

Andre Hollins went from a slumping shooter to a do-it-all leader whom Richard Pitino calls “the heart and soul” of his team. Mo Walker and Carlos Morris dominate one game and look flummoxed in the next. Nate Mason and DeAndre Mathieu have flipped roles twice.

Ventura takes aim at sniper film

By: Jasper Johnson

In an interview this past week, former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura was quoted making disparaging remarks about Chris Kyle, the inspiration for the box office hit “American Sniper.”

“Killing 160 people on the battlefield — why is that heroic?” Ventura asked. “That is doing your job. That is what you were trained to do.”

Ventura previously got into a lawsuit with Kyle regarding a chapter in “American Sniper,” the book on which the new film is based.

Political correctness connects people

By: Camille Galles

Want to know an easy way to feel connected to the more than 50,000 students at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus? Be politically correct.

“Political correctness” is a term that’s been up for debate on the Internet in the past week. A New York Magazine article written by Jonathan Chait — who dismisses political correctness as a “system of left-wing ideological repression” — has garnered responses from well-known comedians on Twitter and major news publications.

Measles case no longer contagious

By: Jessie Bekker

The case of measles confirmed last week in a University of Minnesota student is no longer contagious.

Residents of Sydney Hall received a letter Thursday notifying them that the infected student, who lives in the apartment building,  is no longer infectious, but they may have been exposed to the disease between Jan. 20 and Jan. 28.

John Wodele, vice president of marketing for Doran Companies, which owns Sydney Hall, said Hennepin County health officials are keeping the student’s current location and identity confidential.

When a team has an Olympic-caliber swimmer, finishing the regular season strong is not a problem.

Under the guidance of junior standout Kierra Smith, the No. 19 Gophers defeated Northwestern and Purdue with a score of 259-88 and 232.5-116.5, respectively.

Smith, who is planning to redshirt next season to train for the 2016 Rio Olympics, finished the meet with four first-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay, 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard breaststroke.

Streaking Gophers win three matches

By: David Nelson

Though the temperatures in Minneapolis dipped this weekend, the cold air didn’t seem to cool down the red-hot Gophers.

Off to one of their best starts in the last five years, the Gophers emerged victorious against all three of their opponents this weekend to claim their fourth, fifth and sixth victories this season.

“It’s a lot of tennis,” head coach Geoff Young said. “I thought the guys are playing better and better.”

Neumann, Herauf stand out over the weekend

By: Grant Donald

Last year during the 200-meter dash at the Jack Johnson Classic, Brad Neumann won the race as an unattached runner because he was redshirting.

This year, Neumann repeated as the 200-meter champion but as an official member of the Minnesota track team.

“It’s definitely different than when I won it last year,” Neumann said. “It feels nice to actually run and get points for the team.”
