Mudslide repairs begin after lack of funds

By: Youssef Rddad

Repairs to the river bluff below the University of Minnesota Medical Center are underway after a mudslide brought 4,000 cubic yards of dirt and debris onto West River Parkway last year.

The parkway has been closed for more than a year following the massive landslide caused by heavy rains. Bike, foot and car traffic should resume when the repairs, which started last week, are completed on Oct. 31.

Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board officials said the $6 million repairs took more than a year to begin because the board didn’t have enough funding.

Dinky snatches historic title for oldest buildings

By: Elizabeth Smith

Minneapolis City Council members decided in a unanimous vote Friday to make Dinkytown a commercial historic district. The designation will apply to buildings erected during Dinkytown’s Streetcar Era, which stretched from 1899 to 1929.

Though city officials considered including buildings established through the 1970s under the designation, they eventually agreed upon the shorter time frame late last month. Some expressed concerns that the 1899 to 1972 span would designate buildings that weren’t equal in historic value, such as the McDonald’s on Fourth Street Southeast.

Superblock tops health expansion

By: Christopher Aadland

Despite the projected future space needs of the University of Minnesota’s Academic Health Center, school administrators are moving forward with plans to update the Superblock, the campus housing complex comprised of four residence halls.

While modernizing outdated health facilities will need to be addressed in the future, University administrators say the school is better off expanding the dorms — even though medical school leaders say that area would serve as prime real estate for future medical buildings and would assist in AHC’s expansion.

Nature supports healthy aging

By: Ellen Schmidt

Bushes, streams and other cool-colored havens can support the health of the elderly as they age, according to a University of Minnesota study published earlier this month.

The study reports that access to blue and green environments — like lakes, parks and gardens — can promote physical, mental and spiritual health in older adults. Researchers hope the study will prompt communities to consider older populations when developing urban areas.

Consent policy postponed following debate

By: Christopher Aadland

University of Minnesota administrators agreed to delay updating the institution’s sexual consent policy just days before they expected to implement it, after regents requested additional time to discuss the change at a meeting last Wednesday.

About a week before the University was poised to approve the new standards — which would require all parties engaged in a sexual act to give affirmative consent beforehand — University President Eric Kaler granted requests to postpone enactment of the revised policy after regents said they wanted more clarity on the change’s legal implications.
