Sometime late last week, a sweat lodge was deconstructed on the Hughes Public Open Land. The sweat lodge had been erected during a July 24 event organized by the Hughes Land Back initiative and was used for spiritual ceremonies.

4-star quarterback Justyn Martin decommits from Cal

Four days after four-star running back Jaydn Ott announced his decommitment from Cal, the program has lost yet another incoming Bear via Twitter: Justyn Martin.

Martin is currently ranked the nation’s 21st best quarterback in the class of 2022, according to 247sports. A highly-touted four-star recruit from Inglewood High School, he currently holds offers from schools such as Ole Miss, UCLA and Michigan, to name a few.

Before Martin’s commitment to Cal, which was announced Jan. 18, the blue and gold were actively looking for a future replacement for redshirt senior starting quarterback Chase Garbers. According to 247sports, Garbers was the 34th-ranked quarterback in California for his respective Class of 2017. Comparatively, Martin, who was Cal’s highest-rated prospect in its recruiting class of 2022, is ranked the state’s 22nd quarterback and would’ve likely vied to fill the void.

On Saturday afternoon, the University of Maine football team beat Merrimack College to pick up their first win of the season. “It was sloppy,” said UMaine Head Coach Nick Charlton in the postgame press conference. Nevertheless, a win is a win, and Coach Charlton stressed the importance of getting the first win. “We felt like we just needed to get one,” he said.

One possible reason for UMaine’s “sloppy” play was the absence of third-year quarterback Joe Fagnano, who suffered a right ankle sprain against James Madison University last week. He will miss the next few games. Second-year quarterback Derek Robertson stepped up for his first career start at the collegiate level. 

Robertson showed that he was capable of managing a game at the college level. UMaine went with a run-heavy approach, with 36 rushing attempts compared to only 23 passing attempts. Robertson did not turn the ball over, and he threw for 141 yards and one touchdown. 

The game started out with UMaine’s defense forcing a fumble on Merrimack’s first drive. Second-year linebacker Xavier Nurse jarred the ball loose at midfield, and UMaine recovered the ball. Robertson then led the UMaine offense into the red zone. Fourth-year running back Elijah Barnwell finished the drive off by punching in a 2-yard touchdown run. 

Merrimack then fumbled again on their second drive, this time forced by UMaine second-year defensive back Shakur Smalls. The Black Bears also capitalized on this turnover, this time with a field goal by fifth-year kicker Jonny Messina. UMaine led 10-0 after the first quarter. 

Merrimack responded with a good offensive drive, led by second-year receiver Jacari Carter. On the day, Carter totaled a game high 18 receptions, four of which came on this drive. First-year running back Victor Dawson then scored for Merrimack on a 1-yard rush to make the score 10-6. 

Merrimack failed to take momentum, though, as UMaine fourth-year defensive back Rich Carr blocked the extra point attempt which first-year defensive back Kolubah Pewee Jr. returned 75 yards for a 2-point conversion. This made the score 12-6 in favor of UMaine.  

Merrimack remained in the fight despite these mistakes and forced UMaine to punt on the following drive. A good punt return by Merrimack resulted in their drive starting in UMaine territory. Carter would get his first touchdown reception to give Merrimack their only lead of the day, 13-12, around the halfway point of the second quarter. 

A 51-yard kickoff return by fourth-year receiver Devin Young set up UMaine for a drive that would stall out, but a second field goal by Messina restored the Black Bears’ lead, 15-12. UMaine then forced a three-and-out, and a bad punt by Merrimack led to a good field position. UMaine drove down the field and second-year running back Freddie Brock made two back-to-back positive plays, the second a short run resulting in a touchdown to give UMaine a commanding 22-12 lead. 

Merrimack quickly struck back with a 54-yard kickoff return that set up a 5-play drive, resulting in Carter’s second receiving touchdown of the day. This touchdown would make the score 22-20, UMaine leading at the half. 

UMaine’s offense would strike early in the second half. Robertson would find an uncovered Brock down field for a 59-yard touchdown pass to put UMaine up 29-20, Brock’s second touchdown of the day. 

On the next drive, first-year UMaine defensive back Abdul Stewart intercepted fifth-year Merrimack quarterback Westin Elliott in the red zone, returning the ball 27-yards. 

After a UMaine punt, Merrimack marched down the field and scored a touchdown to cap off a drive that started from their own 29. This cut the UMaine lead down to three, but Merrimack would make another costly mistake. For the second time in the game, Carr blocked an extra point. “All week in practice we really emphasized, like that, we go hard enough we can block a field goal,” said Carr. This time Carr returned the blocked kick himself for another UMaine 2-point conversion, extending the Black Bears’ lead to five. 

Merrimack – down by five late in the fourth quarter with time dwindling – had to get a touchdown to win. Starting from their own 26, Merrimack drove the ball into UMaine’s red zone. Despite Merrimack being first and goal from the nine yard line, the black bear defense stopped them on four consecutive plays to give possession back to UMaine. “We executed when it mattered,” Coach Charlton said in the postgame press conference.

Two first downs sealed the victory for UMaine, with the final score 31-26. “At the end of the day you can’t make those types of mistakes and win on the road against a good program,” said Dan Curran, Merrimack’s head coach. UMaine definitely benefited from the mistakes Merrimack made on routine plays. 

A win is a win, but UMaine knows that there is room for improvement going forward. UMaine’s record is now 1-2 and their next game will be on the road next Saturday at Northern Illinois University. Their next home game will be on Oct. 9 against Elon University. 

A UH student was carjacked by two armed males on Tuesday, according to reports from UHPD.

The incident took place around 12:55 p.m., in parking lot Zone E off of Cullen Boulevard and Wheeler Avenue. No injuries were reported.

“The investigation is fresh and ongoing so I can not give any more details that might compromise that investigation, however I can say that we are actively collecting good evidence,” said UHPD field operations captain Bret Collier.

The suspects carjacked the student’s vehicle and she notified UHPD. Officers were able to locate the vehicle off campus, while suspects ran from the car. They have not been located yet, but the vehicle and its contents were recovered.

“The student in this case did a good job by cooperating, allowing her to get out of the situation quickly and safely,” Collier said. “She contacted the police immediately and was a good witness, providing valuable information to us in this case to help us quickly locate the vehicle.”

About 43 percent of full-time undergraduate students around the country have jobs while balancing their courses, extracurriculars and personal lives. 

Student employees at the University are no different, and while some may tend to have difficulty balancing everything they have on their plate, others have figured out their rhythm and are learning to manage their time.

Commuter assistant at the dean of students office and biology senior, Sharon John, finds it difficult to balance her job during exam week. But, knowing the students that she mentors may be going through similar struggles helps her get through it.

“When we have an exam coming up, knowing that my mentees exam week is coming up as well helps me in thinking that they might be adjusting to the same struggles,” John said. 

A typical day in her life consists of both classes and work, usually back to back. Although, the pressure behind her courses isn’t the only type she personally feels.

“I’ve had a couple difficult experiences where I would try my best to help the person or a mentee and they wouldn’t reciprocate or they wouldn’t respond to my messages and my outreach,” John said. “That can be a little bit of a let down.”

Payton Ray, a customer relations manager with the Student Centers and a pre-nursing junior, also has a few difficulties with his fellow students being his customers. 

“Sometimes, students will move chairs and sofas around and never put them back,” Ray said. “And, I feel like I’m constantly telling people to put them back, but they just never listen. Or like, if my friends rent out a room to use in the UC and they’ve stayed past their time, it’s so awkward to kick them out.”

Ray also balances classes along with work, but he’s figured out his schedule so that he’s not overwhelmed with both at the same time.

“I have a 20 minute commute to school, so once I’m here (school), I just stay here,” Ray said. 

What’s really helped him though, is learning to wake up earlier in the morning to get his personal life together. 

“I’ll wake up and go to the gym, hang out, read a book and maybe play my bass,” Ray said. “Taking that time aside in the morning by waking up early really helps start my day off right.” 

Even though it might seem like a lot, both John and Ray recommend earning some money while in college. 

“I’m on campus all the time, studying, hanging out with friends or in class,” John said. “I’ve just put a few extra hours aside every week to earn some extra money and really get some experience in the workforce.”

SALT Contemporary Dance showcased their performance of “The Invitation” at Kingsbury Hall from Sept. 16-18. As audience members witnessing live performance, we rarely get to see beyond the main theatre and stage. “The Invitation” uses the theatre in a non-traditional way and takes the audience through spaces they normally wouldn’t get to see, giving them an intimate and behind-the-scenes experience of live performance. 

Up Close and Personal

From the beginning, it was clear this was not going to be a traditional live performance where the audience would sit in the theatre and watch the stage. We were going to be walking, exploring and laughing with one another. 

“The Invitation” is set up to seem like a tour of Kingsbury Hall. The audience follows an unlikely tour guide (the maintenance man) to different locations in the theatre — backstage, dressing rooms, stairways, the loading dock — where we watch the dancers perform, sometimes even accompanied by live singing. Every space in the theatre was treated as a performance space, a space of potential. Kingsbury Hall’s specific architecture influenced every part of the show, almost as if the performance couldn’t exist in just any other theatre.

Along every stop, our tour guide would interact with us through questions. Eventually audience members felt comfortable enough to start joking around with him. Being up close with the dancers, the theatre space and fellow viewers created a feeling of intimacy to the performance that I don’t often experience. 

Choreography

The dancers played off of each other’s movements, responding in ways that seemed improvisational. The performance was growing organically from moment to moment — always playful and fun, giving the feeling of organized chaos.  At other times, dancers would break out in synchronicity, giving us an impression opposite of improvisation. 

Not only did dancers play off of each other, their movements also responded to the environment around them. At one point in the show, the maintenance man tour guide gets in an argument with the person who was supposed to be the original tour guide. The dancers changed their movements to respond to the fluctuations of voice in their argument. 

The uncut but also the intimate feeling of “The Invitation” was furthered by the dancers sometimes saying their steps out loud while performing, or huddling and trying to figure out the choreography on stage, as though they were in rehearsal with no audience. Witnessing the traditionally “back-stage” parts of a live performance made the moment special.  

Accepting the Invitation

Near the end of the performance, we’re brought to our final destination — the stage. Why are we, the audience, on stage? “The Invitation” is a testament to how, as audience members accepting the invitation to come to a performance, we are a part of the performance. We are participants, not passive observers. Audiences need dancers, but dancers also need audiences.

For a performance to exist, we need each other. That’s what’s so special about performance art. That’s what we’ve been missing during the COVID-19 pandemic, and that’s what we’re happy to slowly be getting back to. My invitation back into the space of live performance couldn’t have had a better start.

Long gone are the days of Houston’s hot weather as fall makes its grand return in the coming months. 

With temperatures dipping slowly, popular retail stores, like Old Navy and H&M, are gearing up for the upcoming season by presenting their latest fashions for people to wear. 

When shopping for a fall wardrobe, every closet deserves the basics.

A complete wardrobe includes fabrics of different colors, prints and textures to create creative outfits based on your sense of style.

Fall Hoodies, Sweaters and Cardigans

Hoodies, sweaters and cardigans are absolute essentials for the upcoming fall months. While the weather will not be as cold as winter, they can help in keeping you warm. Depending on the thickness of the hoodie, sweater or cardigan, they can be worn in other seasons. Additionally, they are great for layering and come in a variety of colors to fit your palate.

Leather Jackets

Leather jackets finally have the opportunity to shine again this fall. When paired with a pair of dark wash jeans and a t-shirt, it can help take your outfit to the next level by adding a casual-cool vibe. Fall Boots and Sneakers
