Utah Soccer Ties No. 3 UCLA in Double Overtime

After drawing even with Washington at 1-1 (2OT), the University of Utah soccer team (5-5-3) took a road trip to Los Angeles to face No. 3 UCLA and No. 11 USC.

UCLA has been very dominant so far this season, averaging 2.18 goals per game and allowing only .45 coming into the matchup. And the stats have shown results, as the Bruins sit at 10-0-2 on the season after battling Utah to a draw.

Both teams were able to score in the first half, entering halftime 1-1. But neither team was able to score again, as the game ended 1-1 (2OT). UCLA had many late-game opportunities, but Utah’s defense was able to stand up to the challenge.

The Utes have now faced the Bruins 12 times, going 2-8-2. The last time Utah beat UCLA was Oct. 30, 2016, with Utah winning 2-0 at home.

UCLA is obviously a very dominant team this season, but Utah was able to keep pace with them in the first half. Both teams had multiple attempts in the first half, but neither was able to convert until Kennedy Faulknor opened the scoring for UCLA in the 38th minute.

Utah was determined not to enter halftime being down a goal, and they narrowly avoided it in the 40th minute. The Utes got a close free kick opportunity that Courtney Talbot was able was able to capitalize on and even the game at 1-1.

Utah was able to take three shots in the first half, placing two of them on goal. Comparatively, UCLA took six shots in the first half, with five of them on goal. Chelsea Peterson did a fantastic job, recording four saves in the first half.

Both teams came out of halftime playing aggressive, with Utah looking to win against the highest-ranked opponent that they have faced all season. UCLA, on the other hand, was determined to remain undefeated.

UCLA kept constant pressure on Utah’s defense as the game neared the end. They even had a last-second corner kick that was stopped by the Utes. UCLA had multiple shots and opportunities on goal, but Utah was able to come up with some clutch saves and the game remained tied at 1-1.

Only two other teams have taken UCLA to overtime this season, Oregon and Arizona State. The Oregon game resulted in a 0-0 tie, and UCLA defeated Arizona State 4-3 in the first overtime period.

In the first halftime period, Maryn Granger committed a foul inside of the box, giving UCLA a penalty kick opportunity. Marley Canales took the penalty for the Bruins, but Peterson came up with another clutch save to keep the Utes alive.

But neither team was able to score in overtime, and the game ended with a 1-1 tie. Obviously it wasn’t another win for the Utes, but they can’t be disappointed with the results. They were able to play on the road against a very powerful UCLA team and hold them off to double overtime.

Utah’s next matchup will be another road game in Los Angeles, this time facing the No. 11 USC Trojans, currently 9-2-0. The game will be played on Oct. 10 at 3 p.m. MDT and broadcast on Pac-12 networks.

Bears’ season rests on trip to Pacific Northwest

Bears’ season rests on trip to Pacific Northwest

There is no more desperate time for a bear than right before hibernation. As a cold winter approaches, the bear must do everything in its power to find one last parcel of food before it’s munching season ends.

The Bears’ volleyball team is in a similar position to the forest creature — on track to be forced into an early hibernation, Cal must find a way to remedy a winless conference record in October in hopes for a postseason appearance. To put it briefly, they are desperate for a meal.

The good news for the Bears is that it’s still hunting season in the Pacific Northwest, and the region’s most tasty snacks — the Ducks and the Beavers — lie in wait for the blue and gold.

Cal’s first chance to end its current five-game losing streak will come against No. 14 Oregon, who has put together an outstanding season thus far. The Ducks sit at 12-2 overall and 3-1 in conference, highlighted by wins over No. 24 Colorado, Arizona State and Oregon State.

Oregon prides itself on its defense, where the team has held opponents to just a .138 hitting percentage this year while averaging 2.8 blocks per set. For comparison, Cal is averaging 1.8.

“I think our preparation doesn’t really have a lot of differences like between ranked and non ranked opponents,” said freshman setter Annalea Maeder. “We watch film, develop our game in the gym and then, we just go and play.”

Preseason All-Conference selection Brooke Nuneviller will lead the Duck’s charge, as she enters Friday’s contest with a team-high 155 kills and an average of 3.84 points per set. The lineup behind her is well-rounded, though, as five other players have scored over the century mark.

As exciting as it might be to visualize taking down a ranked opponent on the road, the Bears have a much better chance at feasting in the latter half of their Oregon slate when they face Oregon State on Sunday.

The Beavs currently share the Pac-12 basement with the Bears, as both teams enter with an 0-4 record in conference. While Cal showed signs of promise in the preseason with multiple tournament wins, OSU has won just two games all season, highlighting the multitude of problems the program has faced this year.

Cal has outperformed its opponent in nearly every statistical category this year. More importantly, the Beavers have struggled in serve and receive, which is an area that the Bears have thrived. If Cal is still searching for its first conference win come Sunday, exploiting this weakness will be key to ending the road trip happy.

“It’s something that we spent a lot of time on at the gym, so it’s great that it reflects in the stats that we’re a good serving team and that’s,” Maeder said. “Our number one goal is to make pressure from the serving line because give us a chance to make great points.”

While head coach Sam Crosson still searches for a winning lineup, the staff will be aided by the return of senior libero Gabby Bellizzi. Bellizi, a three-year contributor at Cal, made her season debut against Arizona a week ago, tallying a team-high 15 digs in the contest. Her senior prescnese and play making ability is certainly a welcome addition for a team in need of a spark.

The time is now or never for the Bears — the team must play like it’s the end of the season because this weekend truly determines the rest of the year. If Cal can’t take care of business, especially against the drowning Beavers, then the season is all but a wash. But a win or two will propel the Bears forward, and might just stave off hibernation for just a little longer.

The Houston football team defeated the Tulane Green Wave 40-22 on the road to improve its record to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

After forcing a Tulane three-and-out on its first possession, the Cougars completed an 11 play, 76-yard drive capped off by an 11-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Clayton Tune to junior tight end Christian Trahan to go up 7-0.

The UH defense came up big on consecutive possessions, holding Tulane on 4th-and-3 to turn the ball over on downs.

The Cougars wasted no time after regaining possession, going 64 yards in seven plays as Tune found junior wide receiver Jeremy Singleton for a 17-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 14-0 with 0:22 left in the first quarter.

After both teams exchanged punts, Tulane got on the scoresheet following a 13-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Michael Pratt to tight end Myrick James with a successful 2-point conversion to cut Houston’s lead to 14-8.

Senior kicker Dalton Witherspoon tacked on a 46-yard field goal to extend the Cougars’ lead to 17-8 before Tulane completed a six-play, 75-yard drive capped off by a 39-yard touchdown rush by running back Tyjae Spears to cut Houston’s lead to 17-15 heading into halftime.

The Green Wave stopped the Cougars on 4th-and-1 at the UH 29-yard line to halt their first possession of the second half.

Pratt connected with tight end Will Wallace on a 29-yard touchdown on the next play to take a 22-17.

After junior defensive lineman D’Anthony Jones forced and recovered a fumble, the Cougars drove down the field to set up a 24-yard goal to cut the Green Wave lead to 22-20.

The ensuing Cougars’ offensive possession saw them drive 80 yards on 11 plays finished by a 29-yard touchdown pass from Tune to Singleton to regain the lead for the Cougars at 26-22 after an unsuccessful 2-point conversion.

The Cougars’ defense pulled a stop on a 4th-and-2 to get Tulane off the field and only took six plays to extend their lead to 33-22 with a 4-yard rushing touchdown by junior running back Ta’Zhawn Henry.

With just over a minute left in the game, freshman running back Alton McCaskill broke loose for a 35-yard touchdown run to give Houston a 40-22.

Tune finished the game with 23 completions for 288 yards and three touchdowns, while Singleton ended the game with three receptions for 63 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

The Cougars will now return home for their next conference game where they will meet East Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 23 at TDECU Stadium.

A balancing act

The embodiment of Georgia Tech generally seems to revolve around academic and professional development. While these are important, time away from school cannot be discounted.

Finding balance with social, personal, and professional growth can really benefit your future, dare I say even more than just participating in clubs as resume boosters.

As a second-year student, the emphasis of academic and professional development, as well as the pressures that come along with that, has become increasingly prevalent.

Several of my peers have been churning out internship and job applications, finding themselves behind in coursework. On top of that, exams and homework loom over students’ heads regardless of externalities.

As a Tech student, I have been guilty of overlooking the stresses of school, hiding emotions until I am unable to contain them any longer. I understand how important academics may be for my future, but this way of life is not sustainable. The importance of physical and mental health cannot be overstated.

There are numerous solutions to balance out the pressures of school. Believe it or not, having a life outside of the classroom is possible!

Despite the challenge of meeting new people during my freshmen year, I still found a way to join several organizations.

These organizations have developed me into a very well-rounded student, requiring extensive time management skills.

But more importantly, they have been loads of fun, allowing me to take myself away from schoolwork and enjoy new experiences while meeting new people.

Unfortunately, I have witnessed students joining organizations solely to build their resume. This is not only unfair to others who take time out of their day to participate, but also defeats the entire purpose of joining.

Perhaps the best part of clubs is the sense of community. I have met many of my good friends through extracurriculars, all of whom understand and share similar experiences at Tech.

They are here for an education as well, and learning from others’ struggles might just save you in the future.

Taking your mind off of coursework can be very beneficial to your health in addition to personal growth. Finding activities and hobbies that you like, and gathering with people that share similar interests could be the difference between looking forward to an event that motivates you to get through the week, or burning out in a hell week.

It does not have to be so much as joining an organization either. All it takes to work towards a more balanced lifestyle is prioritizing yourself along with your studies.

Simple daily activities such as working out or reading a book or taking a walk can serve as a break from studying, allowing your mind time to recover. Find something that interests you; an activity that you can look forward to doing.

One piece of advice I will leave you with is to never take your opportunities for granted. Sure, academia is important, but school truly is not everything. College is supposed to be among the best experiences in life, so take every opportunity to make this a reality. As Ferris Bueller once said: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

5 Online Casino Pitfalls You Should Avoid

How to avoid money stealing traps at casinos

Casinos are buildings that are designed to keep you inside them spending money.

There is no natural light so you don’t notice the time passing. They have bars and restaurants inside them so you don’t have to leave to eat. They even spend thousands of dollars on psychologists to make their games as addictive as possible.

In today’s article, we are going to point out 5 pitfalls in casinos that you should avoid if you want to keep your money.

#1 – Avoid the brightly lit areas and big jackpots

If something looks exciting in a casino then it’s best to avoid it.

There is a fact that has been shared amongst poker players for years – you should never play on the brightly lit tables.

Casinos want to make the tables, slots, and game boards where the house has the biggest edge look attractive to players. The bigger the house’s edge, the more likely you are to lose money. So, if the table is brightly lit or the shot machine is playing exciting music and covered in lights – stay well away.

The same goes for those tables and slots offering big jackpots or big buy-ins. You are more likely to win playing on a machine that offers a smaller jackpot.

#2 – Avoid games you haven’t played much before

Going to the casino can be really fun, especially if you go with friends and have a few drinks while you are there. It is easy to go in with a game plan but forget it once you arrive.

We understand that having a strict plan can ruin the fun a bit, however, if you are looking to leave the casino with a profit then you have to be sensible.

If you have never played a game before, or know you are not very good at it, then you should avoid playing it for money at a casino. You will want to make sure that you have practiced games like poker and blackjack before you try and win money playing them.

#3 – Avoid placing single number bets in Roulette

Picking a single number when playing roulette seems like a good idea because the jackpot that you will get when you win is enormous.

This payout is how the casino lures you in and takes your money.

The chances of winning on a single number bet are 31/1, which is 3.1%. Would you put money on any other type of bet with those odds? We certainly wouldn’t.

While the payout isn’t as good, placing money on an outer bet in roulette (odds or evens, black or red, highs or lows) will earn you more money in the long run. You are 18 times more likely to win on one of these bets.

When your choices are 50% chance of victory or 3.1% – you should be picking 50% no matter what the jackpot looks like.

#4 – Avoid wasting an 11 in Blackjack

Many people don’t realize that 11 is one of the best hands you can get in Blackjack. 21, 20, and 11 are the top three first hands.

Why is 11 such a good hand?

Well, if you are dealt an 11, then you know that you can take a third card and you won’t go bust no matter what that card is. As there is no card higher than 10 in the pack.

If you get given an 11, don’t fold, there are 12 different cards that could give you the 21 points total that you need to win.

#5 – Avoid playing in physical casinos

Our final piece of advice is to stop regularly playing in physical casinos.

If you’re on holiday and want to spend a night in a local casino then go for it, but we recommend playing your regular games of poker in an online casino like this online casino

Why are online casinos better for regular casino visitors than physical ones?

Well, online casinos offer many perks that physical casinos can’t compete with. Online casinos will offer you joining bonuses and they will even reward you for your loyalty.

Some casinos will offer you daily free spins and will even offer you bonuses on your anniversary with the casino. Many online casinos also have bookkeeping companies attached to them and will offer you free bets and better odds if you bet and gamble with them.

A physical casino would never offer you perks like this.
