Discourse about Misogynoir in Media takes center stage at the Black Motivated Women club

Historically, the media has played an undeniable role in framing and spreading racist stereotypes that have set up narratives to create the misogynoir that is present in today’s media.

Around 25 students showed up sporting Nikes, Vans, Dr. Martens, sweaters and hoodies, with mostly women in attendance, gathered at Amundson Hall on a cold night on Oct. 14 to discuss the negative portrayals of Black women in today’s film, television and pop culture.

Hosted by Black Motivated Women (BMW), a group whose mission is to promote sisterhood and build community through cultural education, University of Minnesota students and BMW members Gwen King-Lunde and Bethany Tamrat led the discussion, advertised through Instagram as “Misogynoir in Media.”

King-Lunde, a third-year student double majoring in African American and African Studies and Sociology, led the discussion, along with third-year student Tamrat, a double major in Business/Marketing and Urban Studies. To kick off the event, the group played Catch Phrase, an icebreaker game that consisted of Black-themed categories such as food, music, people, hairstyles and Black cinema.

Created to shine a light on relevant topics in the Black communities, King-Lunde saw a lack of space in mainstream discourse to bring these conversations of Black history and culture among Black women to the surface.

“I realized representation is going backward for Black women today, but in the ‘90s we had a lot of good representation for dark-skinned Black women,” King-Lunde said. The shows in question, “Living Single,” “Sister Sister,” “The Parkers” and “Moesha,” to name a few, depicted Black women from multiple perspectives while giving them the autonomy to be themselves.

Misogynoir in Media
So, let’s talk about it.

Defined as “the ways anti-Black and misogynistic representation shape broader ideas about Black women, particularly in visual culture and digital spaces,” the term “misogynoir” was coined by Moya Bailey, a Northeastern University professor and Black feminist scholar.

The hosts hoped the event would teach attendees about how to identify specific examples of misogynoir so people can call it out when they see it. The event was also meant to be a call to action, to examine how we can all “work together to stop and eliminate the stereotypes that media perpetuate,” Tamrat said.

“This was a chance to unify Black women and to share what Black women are experiencing on campus, so they don’t feel isolated — this gives us the opportunity to connect over our shared experiences at a public white institution,” Tamrat said.

Students listened to a presentation during the Black Motivated Women meeting on Black Women in Media, Thursday, Oct. 14. The students discussed different ways they see Black women portrayed in cinema and music. (Ethan Fine)

The first topic students discussed were the many problematic tropes of Black women in the media, which involves the sapphire (the angry Black woman), the mammy (the overly nurturing Black woman), the jezebel (the hypersexual Black woman) and the strong Black woman.

The trope that Black women are vehemently angry without sense or direction transcends Tyler Perry’s film canon and makes its way into reality. This, they discussed, is how stereotypes persist. Students agreed that Hollywood superstar Taraji P. Henson has been casted as the sapphire in two of Tyler Perry’s films –– “Acrimony” and “I Can Do Bad All by Myself” –– in which she plays an unreasonably angry Black woman. However, as stated in the room’s discussion, Perry can be criticized as having a history of writing Black women in demeaning roles.

“Media is a very powerful tool and if people haven’t interacted with Black women in real life, they could start to believe the stereotypes they see on TV, which could speak to their subconscious biases toward Black women,” Pamela Gray, a second-year astrophysics student, said. Gray said she feels passionate about treatment of Black women and understanding and dismantling misogynoir in the media and in real life.

The group also discussed the mammy stereotype, a racial caricature that dates back to the Jim Crow era in which Black women were depicted on stage and in films as maids or slaves who were happy to be slaves. This role ignored the historical race-relations between Black women and white people, in which Black women lovingly took care of white families despite their own oppressed and disenfranchised position in society.

The role portrayed Black women as dark-skinned, overweight women who spoke in broken English. In fact, these characters were used to justify the subjugation of Black people because they were always smiling, despite their servitude status. This trope led to cultural implications that would affect how white people and others view Black women as servants or second-class citizens in comparison to them even today. Also, other cultural implications of the historical racist objectification of Black women have been normalized, so Black womens’ identities and creations have been appropriated by white women and beyond, both nationally and globally.

Another point of discussion was the Jezebel trope, which has created the stereotype that Black women are hypersexual and animalistic in their approach to romanticism. This trope has been utilized to justify the rape and sexual abuse of Black women during and after American slavery. The impact of the Jezebel character continues today and has been utilized to sexualize Black girls by controlling what they wear. For example, Black girls’ bodies and clothing are policed in schools because staff assume they are being promiscuous, which leads to their racial criminalization and racial victimization by the white gaze.

Historically, Black people have often been excluded from the mainstream media as actors, directors and writers, except for roles where they were subjected to playing caricatures.

The group discussed how images in pop culture reinforce racial stereotypes, which leads to the exploitation of Black women. An example of this was the exploitation of Kimberly “Sweet Brown” Wilkins, who survived a fire that was started in her apartment complex. Wilkins later became known as the “Ain’t nobody got time for that” lady because her follow-up interview with the press was turned into a meme online because of her voice and language.

Wilkins’ situation could be viewed as modern-day blackface because she was turned into a meme without context, which is similar to the caricatures that white filmmakers portrayed of Black people in media.

Historically, blackface has included white people speaking in broken English, wearing ragged clothes and presenting a joyous attitude toward the oppression of Black people in America. These performances imply that Black people did not mind being oppressed or enslaved.

Blackface was one of the most popular forms of artistic expression during the 1800s and 1900s, and it was pervasive. White people performed in blackface across America and it was the impetus of fanatically obscene fascination with Black people while not acknowledging Black people’s humanity or existence as people.

When the group discussed the strong Black woman trope, a conversation started about musician Tory Lanez allegedly shooting Megan Thee Stallion in her foot –– it is widely believed that Lanez shot her. When it was revealed that Lanez allegedly shot Stallion, she faced backlash from people on social media who gaslit her and denied her credibility.

This trope suggests that Black women can endure immeasurable pain without faltering; therefore, they should be expected to go on regardless of the difficulties they face. It dehumanizes Black women because it ignores the root of whatever conflict they are facing while also applying herculean strength upon their shoulders.

Another point of discussion was the appropriation and theft of Black women’s language (AAVE) and dance moves. Ebonics has been passed off as “Gen Z language,” which is another form of cultural genocide because it discredits the origniators of said language. They also talked about TikTok star Charli D’Amelio stealing the Renegade dance from Jalaiah Harman, a young Black girl from Atlanta.

This is one example of how white people steal culture from Black people while also “robbing Black people of their wealth,” King-Lunde said.

The last discussion centered around Black women in sports, including Serena Williams’ and Simone Biles’ negative portrayal in the media for various reasons. The Herald Sun’s cartoonist, Mark Knight drew a racist caricature of Williams, but the newspaper defended Knight’s drawing. The paper agreed with Knight, who claimed his drawing was not racist. The Australian Press Council also agreed that Knight used absurdity and exaggeration to make a point rather than a racial caricature. This is a form of racialized gaslighting that Black women often experience.

The three main goals for the event were first to teach those in attendance about misogynoir and second, to identify specific examples of misogynoir so people can call it out when they see it. The third goal was a call to action, which focused on identifying the issues while also asking, “How can we all work together to stop and eliminate the stereotypes that media perpetuate?” Tamrat said.

“We want to let Black women on campus know that Black Motivated Women is a safe space for them,” King-Lunde said. “They’re the ones we prioritize.”

Biden’s new proposed budget plan leads to partisan disagreements

Andrew Thompson

Congressional Democrats are hoping to pass the “Build Back Better” plan, a budget proposal that would cost taxpayers $3.5 trillion and is crucial to President Joe Biden’s domestic agenda. President Biden proposed the plan at a joint session of Congress in April, but as a proud populist Democrat, I believe this legislation represents typical wasteful spending by the government and needs to be amended prior to its passage.

The new plan calls for government spending to apply for a ten-year period, and includes measures like expanding access to education, healthcare, changing the childcare support system, investing in infrastructure and combating climate change.

While reforms to these programs are necessary, the proposed reforms require an expensive price tag which taxpayers will have to pay.

However, other aspects of the proposal, such as providing tuition-free community college and pre-K, increasing infrastructure spending and the creation of a climate corps for green jobs must be passed since they will help working-class Americans.

The proposal of the bill comes not long after the U.S. Treasury warned the U.S. government that they will be unable to pay all obligations if the debt ceiling is not raised, since the agency will exhaust its borrowing capacity this month. According to the Committee For a Responsible Federal Budget, Mr. Biden’s proposal may require roughly $1 trillion of direct borrowing, thereby adding 9 percent of GDP to the debt.

“We have a bill that is literally the most expensive bill in the history of the United States,” said North Carolina Republican Rep. Richard Hudson.

Policymakers must remember this when making a decision on whether to pass the bill.

While the plan’s possible increase to the debt is concerning, the bill poses other potential economic consequences. For example, it would reduce the output of the U.S. economy, raise taxes and lower job opportunities. The Tax Foundation, a bipartisan think-tank headquartered in Washington, D.C., estimates that the plan “would reduce long-run economic output by 0.98 percent and eliminate 303,000 full-time equivalent jobs in the United States.”

I also oppose the way Democrats plan to pass the measure. Instead of investing in our country by encouraging bipartisanship, Congressional Democrats will utilize the reconciliation process in order to eliminate the need for Republican support.

When the Biden administration could have displayed an act of unity by urging Congress to pass the infrastructure compromise measure, they instead chose to cave to the demands of progressives, leading to the postponement of the bipartisan measure’s passage until the passage of the reconciliation measure as well.

The current version of the bill faces bipartisan opposition. Although the House Budget Committee approved the measure, Scott Peters, a Democrat from San Diego, joined all Republicans in opposing the measure. Democratic Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema also oppose the measure on the grounds of its cost.

“What I have made clear to the President and Democratic leaders is that spending trillions more on new and expanded government programs, when we can’t even pay for the essential programs, like Social Security and Medicare, is the definition of fiscal insanity,” Manchin said in a press statement.

President Biden’s proposed budget reconciliation legislation reflects this administration’s desire to participate in partisan bickering rather than helping everyday Americans.

Although an overwhelming majority of Americans support the bipartisan infrastructure plan, a PEW Research Center poll shows how only 49 percent of Americans support the reconciliation measure. This significant statistic in itself demonstrates how unpopular the bill remains. If the President wants to really help working-class Americans, he must call for amending the reconciliation proposal and the immediate passage of the bipartisan infrastructure plan rather than allowing the progressives to take over the Democratic Party’s goals.

DPS reports five additional cases of sexual assaults and drugging

Content warning: This article contains references to sexual assault, drugging and violence.

The Department of Public Safety received reports of five additional cases of sexual assault and drugging Tuesday, ranging from Nov. 10, 2018 to Oct. 23, 2021.

DPS received additional reports of sexual assault and drugging since Thursday — including at fraternities other than Sigma Nu— according to a Saturday communitywide email.

Of the five additional cases filed in the log, two occurred on the Row, one occurred off the Row and the other locations for two reports were not specified. Two of the reports include accusations of drugging, two include accusations of sexual assault and one includes an accusation of drugging followed by sexual assault.

The report on Nov. 10, 2018 occurred at the Sigma Nu Fraternity, where students have protested for the past week following reports of sexual assault from September and October 2021. In the 2018 report, a student said she was drugged at a party on the property.

Another report included allegations at the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity house on Sept. 29, 2021. A parent “informed by a third party” reported to DPS that two students were drugged and then sexually assaulted while at a party in the house.

Two additional reports — with unspecified locations — report accusations of sexual assault, one on Sept. 26, 2021 and another on Oct. 23, 202.

Off the Row, a student reported he was drugged while attending a party at 1000 Block 21st St., an off-campus housing property.

Following Wednesday’s sexual assault reports, students have protested for five consecutive days on the Row. While most protesters directed frustration at Sigma Nu, students also addressed other fraternities as additional reports surfaced and students criticized the systemic issues within Greek life.

In an email to the Daily Trojan, the Sigma Nu Fraternity headquarters said they were not previously aware of the new report, and will seek “additional information about the report from USC officials” and “an appropriate investigation.”

DPS referred the Daily Trojan to the Los Angeles Police Department. LAPD, the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity headquarters and the Phi Kappa Tau USC chapter did not respond to requests for comment in time for publication.

Editor’s note: The story will be updated with additional comments.

Going Green With Your Business

Everyone knows that owning and running a business means utilizing various resources and energy. In today’s modern world, the actions of business and industries affect the environment around us. It is no surprise that a lot of these entities have a negative impact. Although that is the case, your business does not have to be a part of the chain. So, what can you do? Go green with your business, of course! Not only will you save on resources, but you will also give the environment a chance to take a break. Let’s find out more.

Why Go Green At All?

Here are a few reasons why going green is highly beneficial for your business:

  • Saving the ecosystem

One of the more relevant reasons you should go green is to make a difference for the environment. Mother Nature is on the verge of collapsing, thanks to a million human-related reasons. Once you convert your business to become more sustainable and eco-friendly, you are doing a tremendous job of being an eco-warrior. It is not about the profits, but it is about making a statement.

  • Potential savings

A lot of equipment and materials for green conversion are costly. But that expense will be worth your while in the long run. Why? You will get to save on a lot of cash. You will spend less on electricity and water, thanks to new and eco-friendly technologies.

  • Productivity

You will also notice a change in your business productivity. Workers can work efficiently and comfortably in an environment that feels welcoming and comfortable. They will also realize that going green does not only benefit the environment around them.

  • High ground

Competitors will have a challenging time keeping up with your improved business model. Customers and clients love any business or industry that cares for the environment, especially those who support the movement.

How To Do It?

You can take several steps to transition your business into an eco-friendly one. Check them out:

  • Educating workers

It might take some time and resources to do it, but educating your employees on the benefits and functions of going green will be worth it. Each individual will soon realize that their actions impact the environment, so they will think twice before acting. Education also creates a sense of discipline towards your workers.

  • Shifting to smart technologies

It can be expensive, but you can purchase and set up smart technologies for your business. These systems and equipment will work automatically and with precision. That means you do not have to worry about excessive energy consumption that adds to your bills.

  • Updating old equipment and hardware

Old hardware and equipment are notorious for consuming loads of energy. That would lead to higher bills. What you can do about that is to update and replace these old ones with new and energy-saving alternatives.

  • Appoint an eco employee

The employee will be responsible for making sure your company or business is doing all it can to be green. You can appoint someone from your company or an individual contractor.

  • Switching to a new energy provider

Your current energy provider might not be a fan of going green. But that is not the case for you. You can transition from one energy provider to another, preferably one that is involved in the green scene. Transitioning also saves you money in the long run. It is not that difficult to do so. You can do it with no professional assistance. But if things get too time-consuming, you can contact a utility bidder to do the task on your behalf.

Will The Change Be Expensive?

It depends on a couple of determinants. How much you will pay for the transition includes the following:

  • The resources for employee lectures and education
  • The fees for switching energy providers
  • The kinds of hardware you will purchase
  • And so on

If you have issues dealing with costs for the business, you can always contact a professional who will take care of them for you.

To Conclude Things

It is of paramount importance that you do your part in making the world a better place for yourself and the others around you. Your actions do not have to be a spectacle. Even small and simple acts can make such a difference. To start converting your business today by performing several steps. You will see and feel the change not too long later. It would be for the best, trust us.

Celebrating Halloween During COVID-19: Events and Safety

Halloween is approaching and with that comes dressing up, parties, treats and spending time with family and friends. Emily Spivak, an infectious disease specialist at University of Utah Health, urges students to get vaccinated as holiday festivities coming up.

“There’s not enough time between now and Halloween to get fully vaccinated, but other holidays are coming right after, like Thanksgiving and Christmas,” Spivak said. “I would encourage everyone to get vaccinated. And so if people have not done that I would go ahead and make an appointment.”

Spivak also urges those who are hosting parties to have them outdoors if possible.

“If you’re going to be close to people, I would strongly encourage masks be worn, windows be open, fans be turned on and try and limit gatherings to smaller numbers,” Spivak said.

Spivak said students should be mindful of people who choose to wear masks and respect their decision to do so. Additionally, she mentioned the virus is more likely to spread when eating and drinking, further proving the importance of masks.

“If you’re eating and drinking that should happen outside because people start to get excited and talk,” Spivak said. “And when you’re talking, eating, shouting — that’s considered high-risk transmission, as that’s when we start to expel the virus.”

One event that is happening this year is the Union after Dark event, hosted by the Union Programming Council. This is in place of the regularly scheduled Crimson Nights.

There are several attractions featured throughout the event, which takes place on Tuesday, Oct. 26, from 7 to 10 p.m. It will be held in the A. Ray Olpin Union Ballroom.

Kyra Hirasuna, the director of Crimson Nights and member of the Union Programming Council had a hand in planning this event.

So we’re gonna have a big haunted walkthrough, that the Freshman Ambassador Board puts on, as well as the First Year Council that’s part of ASUU,” Hirasuna said.

There will also be a pumpkin painting activity, and the UPC will provide pumpkins for students.

Additionally, there is free food provided, according to Hirasuna, including “pizza, and some sweet treats like cookies and brownies, hot chocolate, coffee, and hot apple cider.”

The event is hosting Kim’s Cold-Blooded Creatures, which is a live show where attendees can hold and touch reptiles. There will be trainers nearby. There is a liability form to sign to make sure everyone who participates is safe.

There will be an ongoing costume contest. Hirasuna said there will be three winners and they will be giving out Amazon gift cards.

Masks are highly encouraged, but not required for Union after Dark.

OVER 2 MILLION SNAPCHATTERS EXPLORE RUN FOR OFFICE WITH NEW CIVIC TOOL

October 26, 2021 [NEW YORK] – Within the first month of launching its new civic tool, Snapchat’s Run for Office Mini feature saw over 2 million Snapchatters in the United States explore opportunities to run for elected office in their local communities.

Snapchat’s in-app Run for Office program, featured on NBC’s TODAY Show, aims to bring more young people into the extensive candidate recruitment and training programs. Contrary to popular narratives, we know Gen Z aren’t just performative about social causes — in the 2020 election, this generation voted at historic levels, in large part because they wanted to make a difference in their local communities.

Despite this historic level of youth civic engagement in recent elections, younger generations remain underrepresented in local, state, and federal government. Given Snapchat’s reach – 90% among 13-24 year olds in the U.S – Snapchat’s new tool helps normalize the conversation around running for office among future leaders.

“I dare to say that Generation Z is the most involved politically and 100 percent ready generation to create change,” said Trinity Sanders, a high school student from upstate New York who plans to run for U.S. Senate after attending college and law school. “I think we are to the point where we are ready to run. Once we become of age, we’ll be the first ones in office.”

More than 50,000 users have used the in-app feature to nominate a friend or have sent the Run for Office mini to a friend since it’s launch on October 5, 2021. Snapchatters across the U.S. have expressed Civil Rights, Education, Environment, Healthcare and Jobs as the top five issues they care about. With roughly 70% of races in 2020 having gone uncontested, Snapchat’s new civic tool provides education and resources about critical, upcoming races and ways Snapchatters can join the conversation.

“One of the things that I love about the youngest generation of voters, especially when it comes to running for office, being politically engaged, making their voices heard, is that they’re not asking for permission, that they are just doing it,” said A’Shanti Gholar of Emerge, a group working to elect Democratic women.

“We hope launching the ‘Run for Office’ mini changes the idea of who can be in office — that no matter who you are, where you come from, that you can make a difference in your local community by running for office based on the issues they care most about,’ said Sofia Gross, Head of Policy Partnerships and Social Impact. “As a platform where young people come to chat with their closest friends, Snapchat has an important role to play in normalizing the conversation around pursuing elected office. We view this as a long term investment in the next generation of American leadership, starting at the local level. We want to help shape a more reflective and equitable democracy for all Americans, and that includes the Snapchat Generation — we can’t wait to see all they will do.”
