More than just mushrooms: fungi class expands students’ worldview

Fungi could perhaps be considered immortal because of the way they absorb nutrients from the living flora and fauna around them. Yet, we know so little about these organisms living among us.

In a quest to be more attuned to these natural phenomena, comparative literature instructor Laura Hunt ventures deep into mycology, literature and environmental science with her interdisciplinary class, “Thinking with Fungi: Literature and Ecomedia in Conversation (CPLT 202W).”

The class integrates science with literature, hoping to explore fungi and its uniqueness as a fully co-dependent species. It’s less about learning how to identify various mushrooms or forage for fungi and more about shifting perspectives and to actually “think and observe the natural world,” Hunt said.

“I hope this class will help inspire a worldview that would privilege the care for other beings, other life than just ourselves,” she said.

Specifically, the impending and ongoing environmental crisis forces humans to challenge the narrowmindedness of the human worldview. Hunt uses fungi to question what it means to be an individual, or how an individual is defined. Mushrooms operate in a mycelial network, dependent on trees and plants that all communicate together to grow.

People often overlook fungi as part of the ecosystem, not understanding or even “seeing” the role they play, Hunt said. Much of our anthropocentric understanding of the world is based on power structures and dynamics, with a strong notion of independence and individualism, whereas fungi enter a symbiotic relationship with forests.

Aliyah Cook (23C) took Hunt’s inaugural class last year. Cook said her obsession with mushrooms — from painting, drawing, photographing and collecting them — was magnified after this course.

“Life is so much more connected to itself than we understand,” Cook said. “Posthumanism makes us consider that we are not as special as we think; other beings exist in this world as well.”

Posthumanism is complicated, but the general idea is that human agency goes beyond the individual, and many aspects of the world are not necessarily under human control.

Anna Bayuk (24C), another avid fungi enthusiast who took the class, asked that if humans’ survival is dependent on other species, like gut bacteria, “are we really individuals?”

Something fungi enthusiasts call the “wood-wide web,” a play on “world-wide web,” aptly describes the intertwined life of mushrooms and the environment around them. Understanding mycelial networks and the collaborative, facilitatory nature in which they flourish is crucial to reevaluating our social structures and determination to reach the top.

Not viewing natural resources as commodities requires a lot more focus and intentional observation. Thus, when the pandemic put a pause on our lives, Hunt decided to learn to forage and fuel her passion for fungi.

“Mycelia infected my brain, and I was roped into the web,” Hunt said. “It’s magical.”

For her, discovering fungal networks and picking mushrooms to cook and eat was a re-enchantment of the world, and she said that she learned to be amazed by so many things she had previously taken for granted.

Unlike industrialized agriculture that allows us to eat whatever we want whenever we want, mushrooms can’t be purposefully grown in a greenhouse or in our backyard like tomatoes or oranges.

“If I want strawberries in December, they are in the store,” Hunt said. “But, with the mushrooms, they don’t work that way.”

Fungi are codependent on trees, the weather, the seasons and the functioning of the ecosystems around them.

Unfortunately, failing to see the natural world as consisting of reciprocal relationships, we manipulate nature to best aid our survival rather than accepting our lack of knowledge to recognize the way nature has survived and thrived without us for hundreds of years.

Fungi are completely the opposite of our go big and grow fast mentality; instead, they are small, slow and patient. Instead of racing through life as fast as we can, accumulating as much as we can, Hunt said, we should know who we are as something small, one of the many beings in the universe. To understand and be willing to embrace how small and insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things is a frightening feeling, but perhaps necessary.

Hunt referenced the story of matsutake mushrooms in author Anna Tsing’s book, “The Mushroom at the End of the World: On the Possibility of Life in Capitalist Ruins” to explain the intertwining of mushrooms with nature. After the bombing of Hiroshima, forests were desecrated and destroyed. In an effort to repair the forest, people replanted a species of lodgepole pine that allowed matsutake mushrooms to flourish. Today, they are a highly sought after ingredient in Japan, further emphasizing the persistence and beauty of unity within the environment.

Kate Stevens (24B), who took Hunt’s class last year, said the course changed her world outlook.

“After learning about how networks of underground fungi called mycelium provide channels between every plant for miles, you really will believe everything is connected,” Stevens said.

Bayuk used mushrooms as a segue into a broader conversation about interdependence and the lack of empathy for difference. She gave the example of women’s rights to illustrate her point.

“The suffragette movement was accomplished through proving women could be like men,” Bayuk said. “Empathy came from proving similarity and not through embracing difference.”

Bayuk also mentioned the South River Forest in Atlanta, which is being destroyed to create Cop City, a police compound for training officers.

“We don’t place enough value on the natural world, and we don’t see the woods as having something valuable in them,” Bayuk said. “We’re just running around looking for meaning and disconnected from all of it.”

Hunt hopes her students will come away with more curiosity, questions and ideas and a greater sensory awareness of the world.

“I never used to notice mushrooms very much, but since taking the class, I see them everywhere,” Stevens said.

She also mentions @mushroomsofemory, an Instagram account dedicated to discovering mushrooms on campus grounds. While the owner has elected to remain anonymous, the account has drawn a large fanbase across the University. Many people share mushrooms from their hometown or places they’ve visited, which also get posted regularly.

In a post-globalized world, we tend to forget about everything not immediately in our reach. But, the implications of our actions stretch beyond what we know, and the consequences ripple further than we can see or understand.

When asked why we should ultimately care about mushrooms, Hunt said “we have to.”

“We should care in a way that doesn’t involve terror and dread, but the celebration of life that makes you want to do better for the earth,” Hunt said.

Encampment clearing does not end houselessness

Encampment clearing does not end houselessness

On May 2, 2022, you reported on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision to clear out houseless encampments beside Interstate 80 near Berkeley without having to provide alternate housing, in the article titled “Caltrans permitted by appears court to clear encampments near Berkeley.” This is timely given the severity of houselessness in the state of California, especially during a COVID-19 pandemic.

As a graduating senior studying Public Health at UC Berkeley, I strongly oppose any form of clearing out encampment sites without providing proper alternative housing solutions for displaced residents. Housing is a human right. The city of Berkeley needs to recognize that encampments beside Interstate 80 often occurred as a result of the city’s lack of responsibility for providing housing alternatives, while trying to maintain a “safe” city look by pushing out the unhoused population – leaving them no where else to go.

I am concerned and would like more action from the city of Berkeley to take responsibility for the displacement of unhoused individuals. Rather than avoiding the issue of houselessness, the city should use their state funds to provide proper housing alternatives for any displaced residents, while also giving them the freedom and space to community parks and shelters.

US College Students Have Wildly Different Approaches to Eating Healthy and Maintaining Mental Focus than the Rest of the World

New global research conducted on behalf of global student housing operator Yugo, uncovers students’ outlooks on a variety of mental and physical health related topics, including:

• More than 25% of US students believe more calories, salt and saturated fats make for a healthier meal
• Female students are more likely to go to bed early and eat junk food to prep for finals

Denver, May 23, 2022 – Recent research has revealed a clear imbalance between college students’ perceptions of a healthy lifestyle versus the reality – particularly when it comes to preparing for finals.

The research was conducted on behalf of Yugo, the first global student housing operator created to enhance students’ experiences throughout and beyond university life. The research included a variety of health-related topics and gathered the opinions of more than 6,000 students across six countries.

Key findings of the survey include:

• US students are the worst at cooking at home – The study found less than 25% of US students cook seven or more healthy meals a week, compared to 29% in the rest of the world. Time (63%), money (57%) and the convenience of takeaways (31%) were cited as some of the biggest barriers to cooking. Female college students (33%) are more likely to eat a healthy breakfast than male college students, although on average women college students are (33%) less likely to cook while at school.

US students are more likely to grab a healthy snack such as a piece of fruit (47.2%) than fast food (30.6%) when they are stressed and short of time. Women students (31%) are more than twice as likely than men (14%) to grab a Snickers bar or a bag of Doritos.

• Confusion about what makes a healthy meal – A large percentage of US students compared to the rest of the world believe that higher the number of calories (33%), salt (26%), and saturated fats (25%), the healthier the meal. Students with the least confusion were in Australia (29%) and Spain (25%).

• Opinions on how to keep the brain sharp for finals varies significantly – S. students agree exercise (50%), more sleep (42%) and less fast food (31%) are key factors in mental preparation. Women are more likely to go to bed early than men (39%) while men are more likely than women to play computer games to aid in enhancing their mental focus for exams (45%). Surprisingly, 9.5% of US students will drink more alcohol to calm their nerves. Additionally, 23% of respondents believe that sex will help with studying and focusing their mind, but 10% take the total opposite view and will abstain from sex during finals.

Yugo is focused on improving the quality of life for students through its Live Your Best Life program, ensuring students are supported throughout their university experience, to the transition to working life and beyond. Through this initiative, students have access to a number of support networks and group sessions to improve their holistic living.

Abby Bentley, Global Brand and Marketing Director said: “At Yugo, our core pillars were developed by students, for students. Supporting the holistic needs of our students is our top priority and we are constantly striving to improve the ways in which we operate. This research helps us to understand those specific areas, be it through extra-curricular educational courses, training sessions, or even peer support groups. Our unique pillars of YugoEco, YuPro and YuGrow are constantly evolving to meet the changing needs of today’s students, ensuring we are always there to support them.”

Yugo’s unique approach

At Yugo, students are empowered to grow personally through collaborative events and projects under the Live Your Best Life program – a holistic living experience developed from the Yugo research of thousands of students worldwide. This program supports students through three pillars based on sustainability – YugoEco, education – YuPro, personal development – YuGrow, to deliver on their needs and expectations.

• YugoEco sees Yugo coming together with students to create better living spaces and a better planet through several initiatives. These include low energy usage programs, a collaboration with the Carbon Literacy Project on the importance of living more sustainable lives for students, and global partnerships with like-minded businesses for events, education and student experiences.

• YuPro is all about empowering young people beyond higher education and helping to prepare them for their careers. To show commitment to YuPro, Yugo is launching its own student council, ‘The Yugo Movement’, where students will be given one mission – to eliminate single use plastic in our spaces. Yugo is also offering training sessions in areas such as career advice, real life experience, coaching and empowerment.

• YuGrow encourages Yugo students to shine by supporting their personal journey through events and activities in Yugo spaces, including student podcasts, diversity events and global student networking opportunities. Yugo also pledges to provide students with the best and most sustainably sourced chairs and beds – these were key findings from Yugo’s ongoing research, as being critical to their lives to support both their physical environment and their emotional needs.

The U Welcomes Dr. Hollis Robbins as the New Dean of Humanities

Dr. Hollis Robbins will be joining the University of Utah as the new dean of Humanities on July 1. The current dean, Stuart Culver, will resume his research and begin teaching at the U in the fall.

Robbins said she is thrilled to be working with the U Humanities Department. “I’m excited to meet more students to see what I can do to help,” Robbins said.

She plans on taking an active role within the department. She said, “The dean is very much both supporter and leader at the same time, a kind of servant leader is the way I think about it.”

Robbins’ college career began at Johns Hopkins University, where she studied math, however, her passions lay elsewhere. “I realized that my real love was in literature,” she said.

After working at The New Yorker Magazine, she attended Harvard to earn a degree in public policy. She started to pursue a communication degree at Stanford, but said, “it wasn’t a great fit at the time.”

Robbins moved to Colorado with her family and went to the University of Colorado, Boulder, and earned her master’s degree in English. She said she fell in love with teaching and loved “being in the classroom.” After her career in teaching launched, she went to Princeton and earned her doctorate in English.

Along with her extensive education, Robbins has authored seven books about various forms of poetry and literature, such as sonnets and African-American poetry and literature. Her most well-known book is “The Annotated ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin.’” She is a co-editor with Henry Louis Gates Jr.

Robbins is currently working on a book about African-American poet Robert Hayden.

Culver, the current dean of Humanities, will be stepping down to resume his research and teach at the U.

“With humanities, we have a large role to play in general education,” Culver said. He added the majority of students will take a class in the humanities department, whether it is a general education course or a major-focused course.

“We have to be good partners and work together because pretty much any student who enters the university goes through our doors at one point or another,” he added.

Culver is leaving behind a strong foundation for Robbins to continue to build upon. Several projects were completed or started during his time as dean. One project that Culver is especially proud of is the ongoing development of the Student Success Center.

“We raised a lot of money to develop what we’re calling a ‘student success center,’ but it won’t be up and running until I’m out of the picture,” he said.

Culver believes that some of the most important accomplishments are the connections made between the humanities department and other departments within the U.

“One of the things that college has done is bring the humanities into closer relationships with other areas on campus, both with the hospital and medical schools and with computer science and video gaming,” he said.

Culver hopes these relationships have a lasting effect long after he has stepped down.

Robbins is coming from Sonoma State University, which means there is a new outside perspective being introduced to the Humanities department. Culver says this is a good thing in many ways. “There’s a lot of expectation about new vision, new energy,” he said. “There’s more of a sense that there’s a new beginning taking place.”

Robbins is ready and willing to step up and take on her work as dean of humanities. She said, “My role is to inspire and lead all of these faculty members who are doing really extraordinary work, [along with] staff and students, to ask, ‘How can we work best together?’”

Watch Doctor Strange 2 in the Multiverse of Madness Online Free Streaming at Home Here’s How

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has finally arrived but when will you be able to watch it online? All the information you need to know.Amidst all the expansive theories and timeline chaos, prepare yourself for a multiverse of madness with the latest entry into the MCU — the new Doctor Strange movie premieres May 6 in theaters, but if you want to know how to watch it online, and when it will be available to stream on Disney+, read ahead.

Those possibilities begin when it hits the silver screen, but is there any way for you, the viewer, to watch it online and how long do you need to wait for it to happen?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set after the events of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which sees Doctor Strange break open the Multiverse to help his fellow Marvel superhero, Peter Parker / Spider-Man, become anonymous again. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees Doctor Strange continue to learn of the repercussions that come with messing with time and space. In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2022, director Sam Raimi explained how Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is different than any other Marvel movie. “It’s a really complex movie,” he said. “It’s probably the most complex movie I’ve ever had anything to do with. Not just dealing with one character, or even five characters, but multiversal versions of those characters — and each one has a storyline.”

He also told the magazine about how the movie follows the storyline of Disney Plus’ 2021 miniseries, WandaVision, starring Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch / Wanda Maximoff. “I’m not really sure what the WandaVision schedule was or how it changed. I just know that halfway, or maybe three-quarters of the way into our writing process, I’d first heard of this show they were doing and that we would have to follow it,” he said. “Therefore, we had to really study what WandaVision was doing, so we could have a proper through line and character-growth dynamic. I never even saw all of WandaVision; I’ve just seen key moments of some episodes that I was told directly impact our storyline.”

While Raimi had to follow some of the story already told in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he also revealed to Rolling Stone that the studio gave him “complete creative freedom” to tell his own story in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. “Well, let me say — and this may sound like I’m talking out of both sides of my mouth — that Marvel allowed me complete creative freedom,” he said. “However, it had to follow so many things in Marvel lore, [so] even though I had complete freedom, the previous movies and where Marvel wants to go in the future really directed the path in an incredibly specific way. Within those parameters I have freedom, but I’ve got to tell the story of those characters in a way that ties in with all of the properties simultaneously. We had to make sure, for instance, that Doctor Strange didn’t know more than he had learned about the multiverse from No Way Home. And yet we had to make sure he wasn’t ignorant of things that he had already learned. So everything was dictated by what had become before.”

So when is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness free on Disney Plus? Read on for how to watch Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness online for free and when it will be available to stream at no cost.

Is Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness Available to Watch on Disney+?

Unlike other Marvel films this year that dropped simultaneously on Disney+ and in theaters, Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Mandess is currently only available to watch in theaters. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is not currently streaming on Disney+, but as with most Marvel Studios films since November 2019, the movie will eventually release on the platform sometime later this year. It will be a theatrical exclusive for at least 45 days (or perhaps longer, given No Way Home‘s run was extended to 90), so you should expect to see it on the streamer sometime in July or August.

How to watch Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness online

How can fans watch Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness online? Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is expected to stream on Disney Plus sometime between June 20, 2022, and July 14, 2022. At a press conference in 2021, Disney CEO Bob Chapek announced that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings—the first Marvel movie since the current health crisis to not stream on Disney Plus Premier Access at the same time as its theatrical release—would be available to stream 45 days after its premiere in theaters. “We value flexibility in being able to make last-minute calls,” Chapek said at the time. “Certainly when we planned we didn’t anticipate the resurgence of Covid.” Forty-five days after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ release date is June 20, 2022.

However, despite Chapek’s announcement about Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ 45-day window, it took the film, which premiered on September 3, 2021, total of 70 days to officially arrive on Disney Plus on November 12, 2021. The next Marvel movie, Eternals (which premiered on November 5, 2021), took 68 days to arrive on Disney Plus on January 12, 2022. If Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness follows the same timeline, that means that it could 69 days from its premiere in theaters on May 6, 2022, before it’s available to stream on Disney Plus. That date would be July 14, 2022.

Disney Plus costs $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year (which saves users about $16 from the monthly price.) Disney Plus is also a part of The Disney Bundle, which includes Hulu, Disney Plus and ESPN Plus for $13.99 per month for Hulu with ads and $19.99 per month for Hulu with no ads.) Patrick Stewart, who played role as Charles Xavier / Professor X in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men movies, also made a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

See below for the full Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness cast.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange
  • Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch
  • Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo
  • Benedict Wong as Wong
  • Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez
  • Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West
  • Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer
  • Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier / Professor X
  • Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter / Captain Carter
  • Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau
  • Anson Mount as Blackagar Boltagon / Black Bolt
  • John Krasinski as Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic
  • Julian Hilliard as Billy
  • Jett Klyne as Tommy
  • Topo Wresniwiro reprises his role as Hamir
  • Sheila Atim as Sarah,
  • Adam Hugill as Rintrah
  • Charlize Theron as Clea
  • Bruce Campbell as a Pizza Poppa owner

In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2022, director Sam Raimi explained how Cumberbatch differentiated his variations of Doctor Strange in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. “Noticing the little nuances that Benedict would come up with to differentiate his alter-self. Subtleties, waves of movement, distinct style of speech,” he said. He really is an actor’s actor, and he uses all the tools at his disposal quite elegantly. You can call ‘Action’ and then just lose yourself in his performance over the next two and a half minutes. You just have to remember to call ‘Cut,’ because he’s so spellbinding.”

Raimi also told Rolling Stone about how Olsen played a part in how Scarlet Witch’s story was told in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. “She had just come from that Emmy Award-winning show all about her character and the character’s growth. So it would be foolhardy to try and tell her who her character is or what her character was feeling at that moment. I can craft the the story going forward with her, but she’s got to be an integral part of the storytelling or it wouldn’t make any sense,” he said.

As for the cast member he was most surprised by, Raimi named Wong. “I think Benedict Wong. I didn’t know how funny he was in person, or how lively of a presence he was on set. He’s really super creative, and a great joy to work with. He really brings an energy and a sense of fun to his work that the movie really needs,” he said.

In an interview with Moviefone, Cumberbatch also agreed with a past statement Raimi made about how Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will change how fans think about the character. “I like to think so. I mean, there’s an awful lot going on in this film. I hope that isn’t lost on people. There is some character development, which I think is pretty crucial to him. I think we’ve seen him in his first introduction to the Marvel cinematic universe, as he was an arrogant neurosurgeon and a man trapped in a gilded cage of his own making,” he said. “His ego was driving what he was doing, it was not out of a duty of caring. Then to have a duty of caring, the idea of doing things for others, being selfless and sacrificing, that came with his transition into a superhero.”

He continued, “I think since the last few films he’s been pretty omnipotent and unquestionable, and then a human relationship with Peter Parker has destabilized all that and creates the need for him to help someone he both admired as a fellow soldier on the battlefield, so to speak, but also as a human being who’d lost his mentor and someone he cared about by the end of the film. It opened up the problem that he still faces in his own character, which is this level of arrogance believing that his way is the only way and only he can actually solve the problem. I think what he learns in this is it’s better to act together than to act alone. That’s the big shift I’d say, without pointing too much in the direction of how that happens.”

Will there be a Doctor Strange 3?

Will there be a Doctor Strange 3SPOILER: A third Doctor Strange movie was confirmed at the end of the Strange in the Multiverse of Madness credits, which read: “Doctor Strange will return.” However, it could be a while until Doctor Strange 3 comes out. In an interview with IGN in 2022, Cumberbatch was asked how he balances between acting and fatherhood. “It gets very multiversal in real life as well,” he said. (Cumberbatch shares sons Finn, 3, Hal, 5, and Christopher, 6, with wife Sophie Hatcher.) When asked if there’s a variant he’s like to be, Cumberbatch responded, “I guess one that’s less busy, maybe… I might be that variant very soon, which is nice – taking a bit of a break.” See below for the confirmed Marvel Cinematic Universe movies set to premiere after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

  • Thor: Love and Thunder – July 8, 2022
  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – November 11, 2022

  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – May 5, 2023
  • The Marvels – July 28, 2023

Benedict Cumberbatch returns as the former Sorcerer Supreme, aided in his mission by the current sorcerer to hold that title Wong, America Chavez and the Scarlet Witch Wanda Maximoff, in a film that promises to open the Marvel Cinematic Universe up to new possibilities.

Varsity Blues parents awaiting appeals remain free on bail

Two parents convicted of bribing their children’s way into USC in the 2019 college admissions scandal will remain free on bail while they appeal their cases, a federal judge ordered Thursday. John Wilson and Gamal Abdelaziz paid for their children to be admitted to USC as designated athletic recruits.

In 2019, more than 50 parents were charged with participating in “Operation Varsity Blues,” a scheme organized by private college admissions counselor William “Rick” Singer to secure their children’s spots at top universities across the United States. In the conspiracy that set off discussions about wealth, privilege, college admissions and higher education across the nation, the parents collectively paid more than 25 million for their children to receive unearned designations as athletic recruits, and modified test scores. At least 18 parents had cases related to the University.

Wilson allegedly paid $220,000 to have his son admitted to the University as a water polo recruit, and another one million dollars to secure his twin daughters’ admissions into Harvard University and Stanford University.

Abdelaziz, a former casino executive, was accused of paying Singer’s nonprofit, Key Worldwide Foundation, $300,000 and former USC Athletic Director Donna Heinel $20,000 per month to have his daughter admitted to the University as a designated basketball recruit. His daughter had not played the sport in more than a year and was not on her high school’s varsity basketball team.

In 2021, federal juries found Wilson and Abdelaziz guilty of all charges and handed a sentence of 15 months in prison to Wilson and a year in prison to Abdelaziz. The two men received the longest sentences yet of all defendants in the college admissions bribery scheme.

Wilson and Abdelaziz filed appeals to overturn their convictions in April.

Attorneys for Wilson and Abdelaziz argued the two believed they were making legitimate donations to the University, as Singer, the central orchestrator of the college admissions conspiracy, made the scheme appear lawful.

Donating to universities to facilitate admissions is a common practice and is not considered bribery, the appeals claimed.

Attorneys for Wilson and Abdelaziz expressed satisfaction with Judge Nathaniel Gorton’s decision Thursday, the Charlotte Observer reported. Abdelaziz’s attorney also communicated determination to reverse the convictions.

Wilson’s attorney did not immediately respond to the Daily Trojan’s request for comment and Abdelaziz’s attorney declined a request for comment.

Hibben: The Sketchy World of Supplements

We all want to be our happiest and healthiest selves. For those of us who don’t always eat the way we should, supplements and vitamins seem like a quick, easy fix for a lack of vegetables or protein. Especially as busy college students, who don’t always have the time, money or access to highly nutritious meals, a multivitamin seems an attractive option.

Americans spend $35 billion a year on these supplements. However, the booming industry is highly unregulated, and many companies produce misleading advertisements and misinformation. Some of these companies, for instance, capitalized on the COVID-19 pandemic. They promised that their supplements could cure an infection or protect you from even getting sick at all.

Because the supplement and vitamin industry remains insufficiently regulated by the FDA, we should consume with caution. Look out for phony quick fixes and cure-alls, as most things that sound too good to be true, are.

FDA regulation

The FDA does not properly regulate the supplement and vitamin industry. It doesn’t require any sort of trials for these products, allowing companies to sell their products without safety testing. In regards to marketing, the FDA can only take action against a company after a product reaches the shelves. Even then, penalization typically occurs on the basis of improper advertising.

The FDA has come under fire for its hands-off approach to the regulation of drugs and supplements. People have questioned the overall safety of the products the FDA approves, as well as the scarce scientific evidence behind many companies’ claims about their products. Consumers should challenge the credibility of substances they ingest.

COVID-19 Misinformation

The demand for vitamins and supplements spiked by over 50% in March of 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic began. Even while scientific evidence was lacking, people flocked to buy products that claimed to boost their immune systems.

Many companies jumped at the chance to take advantage of peoples’ fear and lack of knowledge in their advertising. The FDA sent hundreds of warning letters out to companies who claimed their products could prevent or cure COVID-19.

We don’t know what effect those letters had on companies. NOW, a major supplement and essential oil company didn’t receive a letter. Their website says “NOW® adheres to GMP program standards as well as standards that, in many cases, go well beyond what’s required by the FDA,” even though consumers can’t view the evidence for themselves.

The Problem with Unregulated Health Products

We cannot sell dangerous over-the-counter health products to vulnerable consumers. Without regulation, we have no way of knowing which products are safe.

As of 2017, supplements were sending 23,000 people to the emergency room every year. Ephedra, marketed as a supplement energy booster and appetite suppressant, killed 155 people. The FDA did not ban the product until after the Olympics and college athletics did. Taking too much vitamin D, vitamin A and iron can induce serious symptoms, unbeknownst to many. Supplements could interact negatively with prescribed medications, and their labels don’t tell you how many ingredients might exist within them. Withholding possible safety risks from consumers is both unfair and unethical.

If advertising is not regulated until the FDA intervenes after the fact, companies can get away with misleading consumers. Misrepresenting the safety and effectiveness of their products denies consumers the ability to make informed decisions. Companies’ claims aren’t required to get approval from independent researchers, meaning that companies can produce deceptive research themselves. For example, doTERRA, the major essential oil brand, tells consumers to ingest essential oils. The science behind essential oils is untested and relatively new, and we haven’t conducted thorough research on the effects of smelling these oils. doTERRA is one of the many companies in the healthcare industry that continue to make dangerous, untested claims without any pushback. It’s foolish to trust companies to put your health and safety over their own profits, especially when billions are on the line.

Research shows that consuming vitamins and minerals through food is still your best chance at proper nutrition. So, maybe we shouldn’t rely so heavily on artificial substances in the first place. While the science behind these products is often murky, you can count on eating a proper diet and consulting your doctor. It’s a mistake to allow companies to govern their own standards for safety and fair advertising, and Americans shouldn’t risk becoming guinea pigs.

The mandate will require students and staff to wear masks indoors, according to BUSD Brent Stephens, in an email sent to the BUSD community Friday morning. Stephens added that the mandate is to ensure students can complete the in-person school year and attend ensuing graduation ceremonies.

BUSD’s mandate will be reinstated following recommendations from Bay Area health officials to resume wearing masks after the second-highest surge in COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic.
