John Hammond, played by actor and director Vincent D’Onofrio, will be returning for the final installment of the Jurassic Park trilogy. The film is set 21 years after the last movie. We will find out what happened during that time. There is a volcano that is a danger to Costa Rica. If something isn’t done.

The Jurassic World sequel is based on the movie Jurassic World. The same actors and actresses, like Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sam Neill, are in it. Some new people are in it too, like BD Wong and Omar Sy. The movie started filming in 2014 but then had to stop because of Covid Pandemic.

Jurassic World Dominion Release Date:

The new Jurassic World movie, Dominion, is scheduled in Mexico and South Korea on June 1, 2022. But the U.S. release has been delayed until next year because of a pandemic. We’re so excited about the movie, even though it’s been pushed back!

If all Romero Jolerance fans come out at least once during opening weekend (and maybe more than one visit), they could bring about $175M+ across Canada. This would give bragging rights to Canadians who love their cinema in foreign languages like me.

The film will be available on Universal’s Peacock website four months after being released in theaters. Ten weeks after that, the film will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video. After that, the film will return to Starz, which has an exclusive licensing agreement with the film’s producers.

About Jurassic World 3 (2022):

The last movie in the “Jurassic World” franchise ended with dinosaurs free and walking around North America. The new movie, “Jurassic World: Dominion” will not follow a traditional movie structure. Colin Trevorrow revealed this to Collider in an interview. Chris Pratt let slip to MTV News that the film would follow the events. Since there was a three-year gap between the events of “Jurassic World” in 2015 and “Fallen Kingdom” in 2018, people thought that “Dominion” would also follow this pattern and be set in 2021.

Maisie Lockwood was a child in “Fallen Kingdom,” but she is now a teenager in “Dominion.” Director Colin Trevorrow spoke to Entertainment Weekly about Dodgson and what viewers can expect from him.

Recommendations for used bookstores in Berkeley

Kevin Chan/File

Sitting down after a long day and reading a good book is one of the most enjoyable acts. I adore sifting through the pages and smelling a glimpse of their scent.

Unfortunately, the publishing industry and the amount of books that go unread each year are frightening to the environment. One might suggest e-books and Kindles as a solution. Perhaps online reading is one of the answers to this issue, but that’s not all. Avid readers know that electronic reading doesn’t provide the same sensation as physical books.

Luckily, there are ways to be a mindful consumer and lower your carbon footprint. This includes buying secondhand books to give a copy another life. As nice as Barnes & Noble stores are, secondhand books often have a lower price tag and a benefit to the environment.

Here’s a list of secondhand bookstores near campus and around Berkeley.

Moe’s Books

Moe’s Books succeeds in creating a comforting ambiance for consumers. There’s a vast selection of secondhand books, music records and knickknacks. This bookstore carries a variety of posters, calendars and so much more. As a result of the variance, there’s something for everyone. So, if you’re looking for something to occupy your time, Moe’s Books is a great place to check out!

Half Price Books

Half Price Books is a fantasy dream come to life for book lovers out there. Walking in you’ll see aisle after aisle of books from every possible genre. It’s easy to get swept into the lure of endless words. From mainstream books to rare editions of different books, Half Price Books will surely have your perfect match. They sell comic books and both board and video games as well!

Sleepy Cat Books

Sleepy Cat Books creates a peaceful environment thanks to the friendly cat named Lyla. This furry friend is constantly roaming around the store — a major plus if you ask me. It’s a small bookstore filled with many interesting titles, and definitely worth checking out if you enjoy a cat’s company or are just searching for your next read.

Friends of the Berkeley Public Library

Friends of the Berkeley Public Library is actually affiliated with Berkeley’s public library, meaning all of the proceeds go there! The price selection is fantastic: You can purchase with as low as 25 cents per book — which is especially insane in this economy. The staff at the store are all volunteers and extremely helpful too.

Well, that’s it! If you still need a little more convincing, just recognize that secondhand books have their own stories to tell, having likely had another life before you. There aren’t really any downsides to buying secondhand books either. No matter which stores on this list you choose, every step toward reducing your personal climate footprint is significant.

Utah State Legislators Discuss Gun Control

Gun control legislation has been put in the spotlight in the wake of several mass shootings across the country, including those in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York, prompting legislators to act from the state to the national level.

In a week of action on gun violence, Democrats in the U.S. House passed two major gun reform bills on June 8 and 9. The first was a package of eight bills named the “Protecting Our Kids Act.” This includes bills that would raise the purchasing age for semi-automatic rifles from 18 to 21, create new requirements for storing guns at home and bar large-capacity magazines.

The second bill would create a federal red-flag law, allowing law enforcement to temporarily confiscate an individual’s gun if they are deemed a danger to themselves or others by an “extreme risk protection order,” which can be obtained by the individual’s family members or law enforcement.

These bills are not expected to garner enough Republican support to pass in the Senate.

A group of 10 Republicans and 10 Democrats in the Senate have also been working on reaching a bipartisan deal for a bill. Though it would be the most significant gun legislation in decades if passed, it leaves out many of the reforms included in the House bills which Democrats have been pushing for. Among the bill’s Republican supporters is Utah Sen. Mitt Romney.

The bill would not raise the age to buy semi-automatic rifles to 21, but would require enhanced background checks for purchasers under the age of 21 involving the investigation of juvenile and mental health records.

The bill would not set a federal red-flag law, but provide grant money to incentivize states to pass red-flag laws, provide money for mental health resources and increased safety in schools. It would also close the “boyfriend loophole” so that people convicted of domestic violence are prevented from purchasing a gun even if they were not married to the victim.

Across the country, state legislatures are also taking the question of gun control into their own hands.

Gun Legislation in Utah

According to a study from Everytown for Gun Safety, Utah ranks 37th in the nation in strength of gun laws. Just last year, H.B. 60 was passed in the state legislature, removing the permit requirement for concealed carry.

House minority leader Rep. Brian King has been a long-time advocate for gun reform. In the 2021 legislative session, King sponsored H.B. 133, which would require private sellers to administer background checks. He also sponsored H.B. 477, which would collect information on where people on the prohibited list were able to obtain a gun. Neither of these bills passed.

However, King said he has had success in passing measures to increase the likelihood that individuals convicted of domestic violence charges end up on the prohibited list and are not able to possess weapons. He said the state has also funded research into how people die from guns.

“We got about a quarter of a million dollars appropriated by the legislature for a study of who in Utah is dying and being injured through the use of guns,” King said. “We found among a lot of other information … that over 85% of the people who die from the use of a gun are suicides.”

King said he saw no benefit to removing the permit requirement for concealed carry. As a gun owner and a legislator wanting to experience it for himself, King had taken the class required to get a permit and said he had thought the limited training was better than nothing.

“When you can just go out and buy a gun and carry it around in your purse or in your coat … I don’t think there’s any question that you’re going to have more accidental discharges, you’re going to increase the likelihood that people throw a loaded gun into a glove compartment and in a moment of road rage are more likely to have access to it and use it,” King said.

King said he would reach out to wary gun-owners by framing the need for gun control as a protection of a right just as important as the rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment: the right to live without constant fear of being killed.

“There are other rights that we all have that, at times, come into conflict with the Second Amendment,” King said. “I hope that we all agree that we have the right to walk around wherever we are in our neighborhoods or in our streets, downtown, college campuses, going to a neighbor’s home, going to worship services, whatever, and feel safe, that we shouldn’t have to fear for our lives … because someone is carelessly discharging a gun.”

King compared the regulation of guns to other items that are heavily regulated, such as vehicles, tobacco and alcohol. He used this comparison to support the concept of raising the minimum age to purchase semi-automatic weapons.

“It’s odd to me that we have sense enough to recognize that we’re not going to let 18 year olds go in and purchase a handgun, they have to be 21, but we will let an 18 year old purchase an AR-15,” King said. “We don’t let 18, 19, 20 year olds go and even buy a beer for crying out loud.”

State Sen. Derek Kitchen recently opened a bill file in the state legislature to raise the minimum age for buying a gun from 18 to 21. Kitchen said he opened the bill to take an important step towards ending gun violence, but also because it is a bill which he believes could draw support from Republicans, referring to Sen. Romney’s support of the concept as an example.

“My bill is a simple step, but an important step that will help prevent gun violence in our community,” Kitchen said. “I opened this bill because of that reason, but also because I believe Republicans will come to the table with raising the minimum age to purchase a gun.”

Kitchen also expressed support for waiting periods, universal background checks and a reversal on the policy that allows people to conceal carry without a permit.

King said he would support Kitchen’s bill and said he has opened bill files for several other possible reforms. Among the ideas on the table are regulations on safe storage of guns and ammunition and requiring three-day waiting periods and insurance when purchasing a gun.

“Putting a three-day waiting period in place, requiring liability … that’s going to weed out a lot of gun owners right there, if they are someone who can’t demonstrate that they are of an age or have a clean criminal history that will allow an insurance company to feel good about insuring them,” King said.

King also discussed several improvements that could be made surrounding the “prohibited list” of individuals barred from buying a gun, including better enforcing the prosecution of individuals on the list who obtain weapons. King referenced Lauren McCluskey’s killer as an example.

“Lauren McCluskey’s murderer was someone who was on the prohibited list and before he got the gun that he used to kill McCluskey, he tried to purchase a gun and was identified as someone who tried to purchase a gun,” King said. “That in and of itself, when you’re on the prohibited list and you try and purchase a gun, that is a felony and that should be something we are quicker and more aggressive about prosecuting.”

Red-flag laws, which currently exist in 19 states and Washington D.C., have also been sponsored previously in the Utah state legislature by Rep. Stephen Handy, but never passed. After trying to pass the bill for three years, motivated by the risk of suicidal individuals putting themselves in danger, Handy called passing the law in Utah “just too high of a hurdle.”

As someone who has sponsored legislation in the area of mental health, King has mixed feelings about red-flag laws, though he remains open to exploring how it could be done effectively.

“I worry that if we’re not careful in how we talk about that, think about that, that we can do a lot of stigmatizing of people who struggle with mental health issues and make it more likely that they’re viewed as … being a danger to society,” King said.

In the 2022 general session, the state legislature also passed S.B. 115, which expressed the state’s total control over gun laws in Utah regardless of regulations set by local municipalities. Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson said the measure was intended to undermine the requirement she had put in place for background checks at gun shows in Salt Lake County.

Considering this ongoing pushback to expanding gun control in Utah, King said it would take a long time before significant change is made, something which would take “long term breaking down of real structural attitude and structural forces with money and with lobbying.”

However, he said the idea that nothing can be done to prevent mass shootings is “absurd,” referencing the success of other nations such as Canada in reducing gun violence with heavy regulation as an example of that. King hopes that here in Utah, incremental change is possible.

“If we can do anything, even if it’s relatively narrow and focused in scope, it’s better than doing nothing,” King said. “I do think that there are things that we can do at the Utah State Legislature to chip away at, in a positive sense, the number of deaths.”

Keck reaches agreement with HHS to settle Title IX complaints

The agreement includes a new policy around sensitive health exams that the parties hope will serve as a model for other institutions. (Daily Trojan file photo)

Keck Hospital of USC and the United States Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights reached a voluntary resolution agreement Wednesday addressing a compliance review initiated by the OCR regarding the hospital’s policies and procedures for response to sex discrimination and harassment complaints.

The review began in 2019 and served to assess the hospital’s compliance with Title IX in handling such complaints. Title IX prohibits any sex-based discrimination in schools or any academic programs that receive financial assistance from the federal government. The resolution agreement comes as a result of multiple sexual assault and harrassment accusations and sex discrimination complaints the University has faced in recent years.

Recent medical scandals at the University include the misconduct of former gynecologist George Tyndall, who pleaded not guilty to 35 felonious charges, including unlawful penetration and sexual battery, after being dismissed from practicing at the Engemman Student Health Center in 2016, and former men’s health doctor Dennis Kelly, whose alleged sexual misconduct toward many of his patients, most of whom are gay and bisexual men, was the subject of a lawsuit brought by 80 former students against the University.

“We appreciate KMUSC’s willingness to work with OCR to ensure voluntary compliance with its federal civil rights obligations under Title IX,” said OCR director Lisa J. Pino. “As a result, OCR and KMUSC reached this agreement, reflecting KMUSC’s commitment to promoting safe and equitable patient care and a healthcare environment that is free of unlawful discrimination, pursuant to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in federally assisted education programs or activities.”

The agreement includes a new policy around sensitive health exams that the parties hope will serve as a model for other institutions, the University said in a statement to the Daily Trojan Thursday. The new sensitive exam policy “requires authorized members of the health care team to be present at sensitive medical exams and allows patients to request chaperones according to gender,” the University said. During the exams, patients will be provided privacy to undress and dress and be given appropriate gowns and sensitive draping to ensure their physical privacy.

Keck also agreed to conduct staff training, provide annual reports during the agreement’s two-year term and continue to maintain positions of Title IX Coordinator and Deputy EEO-Title IX Coordinator for Healthcare. The responsibility of these positions is to help coordinate and ensure the actions from USC align with Title IX.

Keck Medicine of USC will also continue to maintain the Policy on Prohibited Discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation — a University policy meant to create a safe environment by preventing any discrimination, harassment or retaliation; the Resolution Process for Sexual Misconduct — which maintains that the University intends to give an equitable and timely response to all reports they receive and complaints regarding Title IX Sexual Harassment, California Education Code Sexual Harassment and other forms of sexual misconduct; and the Resolution Process for Discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation — which stipulates that the University is dedicated to providing a fair and prompt response to all reports they receive and complaints regarding discrimination, harassment and retaliation.

Where I found God

Where I found God

Photo of Emma Solomon

The inside of my local church and synagogue looked pretty much the same, except for insignia in certain locations. The front of my church bore a weathered wooden statue of Jesus Christ on the cross while my synagogue opted for a polished ark containing a yellowed Torah. Now you may gather that both are places of worship and have similar setups for that reason exactly, but I never really understood why faith had to be found in any specific set of four walls.

By previous statements made, I may not need to delineate the fact that I was raised in a cross-religious upbringing. But I will, because it is a central contributing factor to the immense confusion I have encountered with the religious experience growing up.

I was both baptized and named before living 30 days on Earth, which meant my cross-religious identity was solidified before I could support the weight of my own head. I grew up making seder plates out of tinfoil and setting my shoes out for Saint Nicolas in the early days of December. These traditions were physical representations of my identity, but my inner spirituality did not follow such a clear cut duality.

While I have never identified as atheist or agnostic, I also have never really understood what I was praying to. Judaism and Christianity worship the same god through different testaments, which contain a litany of different teachings and folklore. I often discarded the small nuances and used the concept of God to grapple with adversity I was currently attempting to overcome.

Imagining a society formulated around religion is almost unthinkable for me, given that everyone else in my high school friend group was an atheist.

Even though I attended a Benedictine Catholic school since sixth grade, students who dared to accept communion during masses were often giggled at. To take it a step further, my ex-boyfriend would frequently scoff at my simple belief in God and outright ignore any attempts I made to express the importance of faith in my life. Essentially, I lived in a community where I continuously witnessed the death of religion as a staple of society.

Faith’s place in Generation Z’s beating heart is fading fast, meaning that it is usually parental figures who keep God’s certain sanctity alive in most households. When departing the comfort of my own home to a cold cement building nestled between Durant Avenue and Channing Way, the comfort of my parents dictating my spiritual practices departed as well. I didn’t have Shabbat dinners with my dad or the burnt orange flame of German Christmas candles to light my way.

I wondered how both of my parents were able to hold such a transient entity close to their chests while leaving their own personal houses of worship behind when leaving for school. I wondered how I am struggling to do such a similar thing while only living less than forty miles away from my childhood bedroom. As these questions followed me throughout my first year away, my epiphany that the current definition of god has entirely changed came to fruition.

I used to utterly idolize the California missions. Maybe it was because of Ms. Hammond’s diorama project that had me molding dried clay to create San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo on a 2-by-2 poster board. Or maybe it was because I dragged my parents on a road trip to see the swallow nests at San Juan Capistrano and eat fresh carnitas tacos at Santa Ines. Of course, this was all before I learned of the concept of colonization and the genocidal behavior towards Native Americans.

The missions were certainly defined as places of worship by Franciscan priests, but the violence that their creation caused was anything but a direct following of God’s teachings. These four walls meant absolutely nothing. They did not teach one to love their neighbor or to repent for any sinful behavior. They encouraged an attitude of violence and oppression that caused generational trauma for those directly affected.

I am not a theologian, or someone who attends church or synagogue regularly. I am a person of faith, though, which I feel has to count for something. The nature of my religious upbringing never made clear what I was supposed to do with my conflicting outlook on such an invisible presence. Was I meant to worship within four walls that hailed Jesus as a messiah, or was I meant to pray for a messiah that was coming to grace the Jewish community?

I think back now to my analysis of the hypocritical Franciscan priests and can conclude that any set of four walls are not necessary whatsoever. The only necessary attribute I was missing was myself. I had created such an over dramaticized conflict in my head that neglected to understand that religion purely consists of two aspects: the believer and the belief. I now realize that I can hold a higher power close to my heart, and I have the ability to exercise that relationship however I please.

Mendenhall: LDS Church Influences State Liquor Laws Once Again

Several changes were made to the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control during Utah’s last legislative session. The most recent change in liquor laws occurred on June 1 of this year. These included a name change of the DABC (now Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services) as well as laws pertaining to alcohol to go and how to identify certain drinks. And now grocery stores cannot sell many hard seltzer brands, as most hard seltzers’ ABV lay right around the 5% mark – Utah’s maximum limit.

Since Utah is a predominantly Mormon state, our laws regarding alcohol tend to be stricter than those of surrounding states, a failure to separate church and state in deciding liquor laws.

Utah is an alcoholic beverage control state, meaning the state has  complete authority over selling beverages like wine, beer and cocktails. And while we don’t see tons of direct lobbying from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 86% of Utah lawmakers are Mormon.

Former Sen. Jim Dabakis once reported to the Salt Lake Tribune that a House leader refused to vote against the church which was in favor of a bill that, if passed, would lower the legal blood alcohol level, even though the House leader was “not thrilled about it.” Failing to vote separately from one’s religious beliefs clearly violates separation of church and state, where the government is required to stay neutral no matter its religious affiliation. As a resident of Utah, I see the influence that the LDS church has on communities throughout the state. And their influence on changes to our liquor laws is no different.

I reached out to liquor lawyer Tanner S. Lenart to help provide additional clarity surrounding Utah’s constantly changing liquor laws. According to her profile on Christensen & Jensen Attorneys, she “focuses her practice on regulatory matters before state and local governments, including the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and city councils.”

When I asked Lenart about her feelings towards this issue, she shared a few thoughts with me. She first explained that “It would be disingenuous to think that the dominant religion in the state, which does not approve of alcohol consumption, doesn’t affect the liquor laws.” She followed up with, “I do get very frustrated when I feel like they vote as a block. You know, as opposed to thinking about it.” With Lenart raising a valid point, I have felt that residing in a state with such a dominant religion has made it nearly impossible to elect lawmakers who have views separate from the LDS church.

I also asked Lenart how Utah’s implementation of nine new bar licenses will better serve our local businesses. She said, “There wasn’t an industry push to have more licenses available. But technically, all that happened was they said, okay, we’re gonna give out more resort licenses. And you guys, you guys who are all resorts, when you switch over to getting this new resort license … all of their bar licenses are coming back into the pool. Really kind of a sneaky way.”

Essentially, the legislature’s changes don’t make much of a positive impact on businesses seeking bar licenses. To properly educate ourselves on all policies and regulations surrounding alcohol, our government should do a better job of advocating for the public and listening to our needs. We can’t understand or follow such regulations if our laws are confusing and hard to understand.

Our lawmakers’ religious stances influence decisions that must remain secular. These lawmakers are people that we look to in providing comprehension and rules surrounding laws. We cannot fully respect their authority if they allow religious views to cloud their judgment. If we don’t call out our authority figures now, they will continue to toe the line in the future and push the boundaries of a non-secular state government.

What Is Chegg?

Chegg is an online learning resource that was founded in 2005 by two students who were studying at Stanford University. They observed that a lot of students would photocopy their notes and use them in their coursework. This cost both the students, who had to pay for photocopying as well as the university because they were losing revenue. Duvet and Jonathan wanted to solve this problem by creating an online marketplace where students could access course materials, study guides, and other content that would be helpful for their studies. The Chegg website allows students to access resources such as academic papers, books, online tutoring, and other study materials. The website is available in 30 different languages and has over 20 million study guides and academic papers. This online marketplace has grown significantly and has an estimated worth of over $2 billion as of 2019. Chegg is one of the largest online learning resources and has helped many students across the world with their homework and studying.

Local representatives host panel to discuss public safety, gun violence

Local representatives host panel to discuss public safety, gun violence

Local representatives met Thursday to discuss Berkeley’s public safety policies and address solutions to gun violence.

The League of Women Voters for Berkeley, Albany and Emeryville hosted a panel Thursday with local representatives to discuss issues of public safety and police abuses of power.

Before the discussion began, Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley explained recent efforts to prevent gun violence in Alameda County, focusing on risks to young people and those with mental health issues.

“In Alameda County, we have been really burdened with a huge amount of guns being used everyday, throughout the whole county,” O’Malley said during the meeting.

Panelists from Berkeley, Albany and Emeryville then shared local solutions and challenges.

Berkeley City Councilmember and panelist Terry Taplin cited easy access to firearms, lack of mental health support systems and underlying economic inequality as factors in gun violence. According to Taplin, Berkeley has seen a recent increase in gun violence.

Berkeley Police Department, or BPD, Lt. Melanie Turner said during the panel that the biggest challenges for the department were gun crimes and staffing shortages.

Panelist Héctor Malvido, a member of Berkeley City Council’s Reimagining Public Safety Task Force and co-chair of Latinxs Unidxs de Berkeley, said there is no “one-size-fits-all” solution to gun violence and stressed the importance of addressing underlying systemic issues.

“Gun violence is a direct result of economic oppression,” Malvido said during the panel. “Social determinants of housing, education (and) access to income (influence) ability to overcome these barriers.”

When looking at current county policies, Taplin cited Berkeley Unified School District’s efforts to improve its student safety plans. He noted the heavy investment of time and resources needed to combat the issue.

Malvido added that the relationship between BPD and the community is crucial to making an effective program against gun violence.

“The police department has a long history of serving the community of Berkeley … but it also has a very long history of racial discrimination” Malvido said during the panel. “That kind of relationship, I think, requires constant engagement and conversation.”

Addressing issues of public accountability, Turner commented on the integration of police de-escalation bias training in addition to the creation of the BPD Transparency Hub that allows public access to data on the police force. She emphasized that data is the key to addressing gun violence without over-policing.

Taplin also emphasized the importance of properly allocating fiscal and staff resources to take effective action.

“We can pass policies all day long, but if those policies just sit on the shelf, they don’t amount to any grade of change,” Taplin said during the panel.

UC worker is no longer able to live in Berkeley

UC worker is no longer able to live in Berkeley

Illustration of a car driving away from Berkeley and past a recently sold house

Erin McCann/File

Up until very recently, the UC system had a reputation for nurturing the American dream. Not just for students, but for families like mine.

After immigrating from Mexico back in 1990, we made Berkeley our home. My mom had a union job in the facilities department at UC Berkeley, or UCB. She bought a home in the city in 1996. She paid off her mortgage in 2018.

I attended Berkeley’s public schools, and graduated from Berkeley High School before following in my mom’s footsteps and landing my own job as a custodian at UCB. I also got married and became a mother to two incredible girls.

By 2003, we were still living with my mom, but knew we needed a place of our own. With a stable union job, and a husband who also worked as a professional tile setter, I had hoped to do what my mom had done. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find a place to buy or rent that we could afford.

It was hard to understand how in less than 10 years, the very same dream my mother had been able to access had become an impossibility for her children. Over those years, UCB was growing, but it was not building enough housing to accommodate that growth.  Working families like ours had been priced out of the community. I was heartbroken. Our entire life — our jobs, schools and families — was in Berkeley.

With no choice but to leave, we moved our family to Richmond, and had our third child, a son.

At 7 months old, he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. We drove every single day during rush hour to see his doctors at Children’s Hospital in Oakland. When he succumbed to the disease in 2009, my husband and I were beyond devastated. We took time away from work to grieve, but that ultimately caused us to lose our new home. We were then forced to move even farther away from Berkeley.

All the while UC Berkeley has continued to grow, pricing even more families out of the local housing market. Median home prices now exceed $1 million. And, while university custodians like me earn around $48,000 per year, the wage required to afford even a one-bedroom apartment in Alameda County has ballooned to $77,000, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

This isn’t just an issue for UC staff and their families, but also students. UC Berkeley provides less student housing than any other school in the UC system. Only the most well-off can afford to live close to campus.

I wanted my girls to go to Berkeley schools and grow up in Berkeley like I did. However, instead of walking to work or school, we now commute as much as one hour, each way, every day. My youngest daughter is forced to wake up before her peers because I drop her off at school early in order to get to work on time. She stays at her school later than everyone else because she has to wait for me to pick her up.

California’s housing affordability crisis represents a collective failure to stand up for the next generation. In less than 10 years, my immigrant mother’s story of planting roots in Berkeley became impossible for the next generation earning even larger incomes. The campus’s decades-long failure to plan growth in a way that preserves affordability for its most vulnerable families has only accelerated this transformation. Even worse, it has needlessly made the lives of workers and students harder.

Now, by failing to build enough new housing to accommodate thousands of new students and staff, UC Berkeley’s current Long Range Development Plan promises to deliver more of the same. It will increase demand for housing far beyond available supply. It will mean higher prices and higher rents, displacing even more families who cannot keep pace.

My family, and others just like me, have been loyal to UC Berkeley, and are committed to its success. We deserve to be able to send our children to local schools and parks. We deserve a manageable commute and a mortgage or rent we can afford. We deserve to stay in the communities we’ve spent decades serving.

UC Berkeley is at a crossroads. It can choose to make my mother’s story possible again, or to make it a permanent relic of the past. If campus truly values our contributions, our aspirations and our quality of life, it will stop repeating the same mistakes, and produce more affordable housing for workers and students alike.

Rocio Rodriguez is a senior custodian at UC Berkeley.
