There should be birth control for men too

Careful Contraception: Staying safe post-Roe

Aya Ghoneim/The Cougar

With Roe v. Wade no longer constitutionally protecting Americans’ rights to safe abortions, those affected by the ruling have frantically turned to birth control and other preventative options.

President Joe Biden tweeted that his administration aims to protect access to drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration, including mifepristone which is able to end an early pregnancy.

“Today, I’m directing the Department of Health and Human Services to ensure that medications like contraception and mifepristone are available to the fullest extent possible,” Biden tweeted.

Created to normalize access to abortions by mail, plancpills.org provides information on the safety of abortion pills and includes a guide about the specific abortion care available in each state. The information provided focuses on two kinds of pills: ones with Mifepristone and Misoprostol, and ones with Misoprostol only.

When it comes to birth control, the numerous options and restrictions can easily become overwhelming. Planned Parenthood lists the different options available, with some of the most common being pills, patches and an intrauterine device.

Birth control pills are taken daily to prevent pregnancy through synthetic hormones and preventing ovulation,  and with generic and non-generic brands, there are options available for each price range. When choosing the right brand of pill, carefully consider underlying health issues and potential side effects.

Working in a similar way to the pill, the patch is replaced weekly for three weeks, followed by a patch-free week, allowing menstruation to occur. This method contains the same hormones as birth control pills and holds some advantages over their oral counterpart, including being an alternate option for those who cannot swallow pills and the ability to be removed at any time.

IUDs are proven to be 99 percent effective and inserted into the uterus, with some versions lasting up to 12 years. Hormonal IUDs contain progestin and create mucus that blocks fertilization, whereas copper IUDs use copper ions to create an inhospitable environment for sperm.

The copper IUD can be used as emergency contraception if inserted within five days after unprotected sex. This IUD is not recommended for those allergic to copper, those with Wilson’s disease and those with bleeding disorders preventing blood from properly clotting.

Another long-lasting form of contraception is an implant, commonly sold as Nexplanon. The implant is inserted into the upper arm and lasts for three years, needing to be removed by the end of the third year. While the cost can reach $1,300, the implant could be covered by the Affordable Care Act.

A more temporary yet still effective option is a shot, which is given once every three months. Depo-Provera is the most common brand, suppressing ovulation with an estimated six out of 100 people becoming pregnant. This method is not recommended for those with a history of depression or those wanting to get pregnant within the next year.

Vaginal rings are replaced once a month, releasing estrogen and progestin to prevent the release of an egg. The ring is inserted for three weeks and removed for one, before replacing it. These can be free with most health insurance plans but are typically $200 each without any coverage.

For devices used during sex, condoms are the most common but other options are internal condoms, cervical caps, diaphragms and sponges.

Morning-after pills are used as emergency contraception to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex and are not to be used as birth control.

There are numerous resources available to determine who is available for low-cost or free health insurance, helping everyone find the most affordable and effective birth control for them.

Winners and losers of 2022 NBA draft

Winners and losers of 2022 NBA draft

All-Pro Reels/Creative Commons

What was expected to be a wild 2022 NBA draft full of trades, pick swaps and star player movement simmered into a relatively stable night — teams remained calm and stuck to their draft boards. But, like with any draft, several questions still remain: Which team drafted the next superstar? Who will be the biggest bust? What happened with the Knicks? Here are my initial winners and losers of the 2022 NBA draft.

Winners:

The Oklahoma City Thunder

Despite a Woj bomb surprising everyone with Paolo Banchero becoming the Magic’s first overall pick after there were zero reports tying the Duke forward to Orlando, the Thunder got the guy they wanted in Gonzaga center/forward Chet Holmgren. The seven footer joins a young Oklahoma City core led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey, two playmakers who can help Holmgren get adjusted to the NBA very quickly. But OKC didn’t stop there. General Manager Sam Presti used his plethora of draft capital to entice the Knicks away from their No. 11 pick to draft New Zealand forward Ousmane Dieng, while also adding Jalen Williams from Santa Clara and Jaylin Williams from Arkansas (the two Williamses replicated the Spider-Man meme in their OKC introduction!). The Thunder drafted players who can guard all five positions and have high upside, bringing them to an environment where they can develop with little to no pressure.

Jaden Ivey and the Detroit Pistons

When Detroit fell out of the top three of the lottery, despite having a bottom-three record in the league, Pistons fans lamented the fact that they would miss out on the three unicorns headlining the draft. But despite picking at No. 5, the player of their dreams fell into their lap in Purdue guard Jaden Ivey. It was a good story, with Ivey in tears as he heard his name called to Detroit, the city where his family carried the sports tradition; his mother, Niele Ivey, played for the Detroit Shock and his grandfather, James Hunter, played for the Detroit Lions. Ivey comes full circle to a Pistons team where he fits perfectly. His strong athleticism and shot creation should fit nicely next to Cade Cunningham’s playmaking and scoring ability. On top of landing Ivey, Motor City also traded for center Jalen Duren from Memphis, a player who offers them immediate starting caliber defense and much-needed size.

Losers:

NBA draft reporting

What’s the point of following the draft live if ESPN reporter Adrian Wojnarowski and The Athletic reporter Shams Charania, two of the NBA’s top-tier breaking news journalists, are going to tweet who got drafted five minutes before commissioner Adam Silver officially announces the pick? Their Twitter race escalated into a confusing slew of inconsistent reporting on several trades, namely the three-team deal involving Duren. Wojnarowski and Charania tweeted conflicting reports about where the Memphis center landed, with one reporting him on the Knicks and the other suggesting a trade from the Hornets to the Pistons. Even the broadcasters couldn’t figure out where Duren was going and what he was being traded for. Details of the trade only became apparent hours after the No. 13 pick was announced. It was a recurring theme of disorientation all night long, with draftees getting their name called for one team only to be announced in a trade five minutes later. NBA draft night can stand to be a lot less incoherent and a lot easier to digest for the casual fan.

Sacramento Kings fans

The entire ESPN broadcast was dedicated to making Kings fans feel terrible about their franchise’s decisions. Before their pick at No. 4, they showed a graphic of the busts the Kings had picked before NBA superstars like Luka Doncic, Klay Thompson and Damian Lillard. This was followed by Sacramento selecting Keegan Murray, the forward from Iowa, higher than his projection on most expert’s mock drafts. I’m not killing the Kings for picking Murray; while he is an older draft pick, he led the Hawkeyes with 23.5 points per game and 8.7 rebounds per game. More impressively, he led the country in player efficiency rating at 37.8, and won a slew of national awards. Because of Murray’s high floor and NBA-ready game, it’s a pick that feels like a win-now move, which isn’t exactly easy for a Kings team competing in a loaded Western Conference. Additionally, Sacramento could have potentially traded down to get Murray later with traded assets, especially when so many teams were clamoring for Ivey. Kings fans have to sit through the next four months worrying whether their team made another terrible draft night decision.

To Be Determined:

The New York Knicks

The Knicks did a bunch of weird stuff, but long story short, they traded out of the lottery in a loaded draft class… for a bunch of conditional picks. That sounds like a disaster, but from New York’s perspective, the quality of draft prospects was thinning out by the No. 11 pick. And even if they did keep Dieng or whichever prospect they wanted, they would barely crack Tom Thibodeau’s rotation, a coach known for not playing rookies. Their plan on draft night was based more on clearing cap space to pursue breakout point guard Jalen Brunson. By dumping Kemba Walker’s $9.2 million contract, they have the salary cap space to potentially outbid Dallas. However, I’m not sold on the “All in on Brunson” plan; he’s less of a star and more of an excellent third option on a winning team — New York is not a winning team right now. Furthermore, their entire free agency plan goes up in flames if Brunson decides to return to the Mavericks. It’s difficult to call the Knicks draft night a loss until we know the value of those picks, what they can flip them for and if they can score big in free agency.

Mendenhall: Salt Lake County “Cool-Zones” Aren’t Inclusive

Salt Lake County recently announced their implementation of cool zones,” which provide citizens an escape from the blistering summer heat. Cool zones offer air-conditioning and fresh, cold water, plus the chance to learn about summer activities county-wide.

However, upon further investigation, these cool zones are not inclusive and marketed solely for elderly people and disabled individuals. While I applaud the emphasis on these two groups, the cool zones don’t encompass other groups in need of the same resources throughout the summer months. Excluded groups include children out of school for the summer, teenagers in need of volunteer experience and adults who work in the heat.

Although cool zones are a good idea, they are exclusive and should be redesigned to better serve the entire community.

Who Benefits Now

In Salt Lake County, adults 65 and older make up about 11.5% of the population, with disabled individuals making up 23%. People in the two groups can already access care facilities specifically catering to their needs, including senior centers and residential care programs. These care facilities are equipped with the same amenities provided at cool zone locations. But not everyone in the community can access these centers and programs.

Children Out of School

The 2020 Census estimated that 26.6% of Salt Lake County households contained children under the age of 18. During the summer months, these children are not in school, so their parents and caregivers may not be around to entertain or provide them with activities. Most parents can’t take summers off to spend time with their children, making plans for finding summer childcare difficult.

I know my parents struggled with not knowing where my siblings and I were or what we were doing to entertain ourselves during summer. However, knowing that these children have a safe place to go would likely put thousands of parents’ minds at ease. Salt Lake County should offer children access to cold water, air conditioning, free activities and resources through the cool zone program.

Who to Include

Aside from children, there are many other groups that Salt Lake County could include to make cool zones more inclusive. These include workers who are out in the sun all day and college students traveling between classes. If they had access to cool zone amenities, it may reduce the likelihood of dehydration or heat stroke. Cool zones could offer multiple groups relief from heat-related health conditions and possibly benefit by including other demographic groups.

Limits Through Location

Salt Lake County libraries host reading challenges every summer. I’ve participated in this challenge since the first grade, but my family only knew of it because we lived down the street from a library. Libraries also provide several arts and crafts activities for various age groups. This last week, kits were handed out to children age nine and younger to make Father’s Day crafts. Some families and individuals may not know about these activities, which is why they are promoted at county-sponsored events like cool zones. However, if cool zones exclude people under a certain age or in general, individuals cannot educate themselves about these great resources and activities.

Volunteer Opportunities

In addition to benefiting the public, volunteers seeking hours or experience could build their resumes and offer assistance in cool zone programs throughout the summer. Creating a more inclusive program could provide more opportunities for people to gain volunteer hours. Utah boasts the No. 1 spot in self-reported volunteer efforts, falling at a 51% volunteer rate. Increasing volunteer opportunities through the cool zone initiative would only better serve our community members. Salt Lake County already has the foundation for a great program. We just need to take the next step and open the program to all ages.

Ensuring that our communities foster inclusive spaces rather than divisive ones is key in feeling a sense of belonging and unity. But right now, Salt Lake County cool zones are exclusive. We must work on making programs and initiatives more inclusive, and in doing so, we can help spread awareness about cool zones.

Journey an hour from campus for this week’s recommendations

Minneapolis summers offer enough renowned parks, restaurants and festivals to keep any college kid busy but, alas, one does become wanderlust. A drive with the windows down or a bike ride with friends simply hits differently when Interstate-35 isn’t screeching in the background; hence, an hour journey outside of the city bustle feels essential at times.

These three A&E selections intend to spur epiphanies for those looking for something less than a day trip and more than a late lunch in Uptown. Check out what our desk recommends for an hour-long journey away from campus

Forgotten Star Brewery: I’m one of many car-less college students, so last fall when I interviewed a local muralist named Allison Hunsley at Forgotten Star Brewery, I biked my little self up through Northeast and into the first ring suburb of Fridley. Outside of being a fun work assignment, the approximately 45-minute ride from campus to the brewing company provided me with a new favorite brew spot and a fresh look at Northeast’s riverside bike path. Passing by Boom Island Park and Psycho Suzi’s, the trek to Forgotten Star was half the fun of grabbing a local pint, plus it made drinking a beer feel oddly healthy. Any University of Minnesota student looking to grab a group and take a long bike ride to a brewery (prototypical Minneapolis summer behavior) should definitely keep Forgotten Star’s spacious digs in mind. – James Schaak

Marine on St. Croix: Looking for a picturesque river town that is less than an hour away from the Twin Cities? Look no further than Marine on St Croix. Just 45 minutes northeast of campus, the sleepy little town offers comfort food, cozy storefronts and beautiful closeup views of the St. Croix River. Start off the day two miles north of the town by taking a hike in William O’Brien State Park. When you are ready for a rest, head into town for a filling meal at the Marine Cafe and a scoop of ice cream from ‘Nita Mae’s Scoop. Before you head home, make sure to check out the historic Marine Mill site right off of the main street for a look back into the past. – Maya Marchel Hoff

Franconia Sculpture Park: Located just under an hour from campus, Franconia Sculpture Park pulls its weight as more than a brief pitstop on the way to nearby Taylors Falls. The park is situated on 50 acres and features a space to focus on contemporary sculpture, installation and land art in addition to its artist residency program and community programming. Admission is free, rendering the open-air museum the perfect place for an aimless wander. Leave early on your way up and swing into Lindstrom for breakfast at the Swedish Inn or just a glimpse of the town’s coffee-pot-shaped water tower. – Sophia Zimmerman

CTE in Sports: A Continuing Issue

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is a growing issue in sports, primarily football. Many football players, both professional and collegiate, have proven the damage that CTE can do. Articles have shown that the risk doubles after just three years of playing football. Research into CTE has been an expanding subject recently, and researchers have analyzed brain scans of former players.

CTE is a progressive brain condition and is typically caused by repeated concussions and blows to the head. Due to the data collected, Boston University researchers have been able to identify a connection between CTE and football. Many collegiate players have had their lives ruined from CTE, and the 2008 Florida Gators are a major example.

The Gators won the championship that year behind Tim Tebow, the first sophomore to win the Heisman. But not all of the players would live up to expectations. Forty-one of the 121 players on the roster would go on to be arrested. But perhaps the most well-known player on the team was tight-end Aaron Hernandez.

Hernandez’ professional career came to an end with the New England Patriots in 2013 after a murder investigation. He was waived from the team and charged with first-degree murder. Hernandez later would commit suicide in prison. But he is just one example of CTE affecting players.

Phillip Adams is another player who was significantly affected by CTE. Adams murdered six people on April 7, 2021 before committing suicide. The autopsy revealed he suffered from Stage 2 CTE, the most common stage. Adams had previously reached out to the National Football League seeking help, but was denied due to his inability to travel to doctors.

The tragedy of repeated murders and suicides by former NFL players is an unfortunate occurrence, but one that may be attributed to injuries suffered while playing. Thankfully the NFL and NCAA have both implemented measures to protect their players. These include newer helmet technology and rules such as making blindside blocks a penalty.

In 2016 the NFL pledged $100 million to support research and engineering in neuroscience-related topics. They also currently have 29 medical professionals on the sidelines for each game. But these professionals can only help once an injury has occurred, and often it is too late.

Despite these measures, CTE is still an issue, and NFL and NCAA players every year suffer the consequences. The leagues have taken measures to reduce the injury risk, but players every year still suffer bad concussions, a precursor to CTE. Despite this, players are still willing to put their bodies on the line to play professionally.

Suicide is the third highest cause of death for student athletes, often from CTE or the pressure of being a top athlete. Mental health in sports is a very important issue, and thankfully it is getting more and more attention. Athletes are only human, and should be treated as such.

Can A Car Run Without A Catalytic Converter?‍

Catalytic converters control the amount of exhaust coming out of the car. They do this by monitoring the exhaust gas and adding or removing catalytic materials to regulate its temperature. If the catalytic converter is broken, the car will not be able to reduce harmful emissions. The car may also not be able to pass emission standards in most cities and counties. There are some solutions if you are interested in keeping your car but don’t want to install a new catalytic converter. You’ll need to add devices that monitor and manage engine performance along with various sensors so you can ensure your car is operating safely without a catalytic converter.

Can A Car Run Without A Catalytic Converter?‍

The catalytic converter is the device that reduces the emissions in a car. It converts harmful gases into harmless ones. If it does not work, the car will give out dangerous fumes that are harmful to human beings. So one should not remove it from a car. It is important to keep the environment clean. So it is necessary to have a catalytic converter. It not only cleans the environment but also keeps the car safe and secure.‍

What Is A Catalytic Converter?

A catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system of a car. It removes toxic gases, such as hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxide, from the exhaust gases. A catalytic converter is made of two parts. First, there is a reactor. It contains a mix of catalysts and precious metals, like platinum and rhodium. This mixture is designed to reduce pollutants. The second part is a heat exchanger. It is a long tube with fins that are designed to raise the temperature of the exhaust gases. When an automobile engine operates, there are gases released through the exhaust system. The catalytic converter reduces the number of toxic gases in these exhaust gases. It does this by using a chemical reaction. The first step of this reaction is the reaction between hydrogen gas and oxygen gas to produce energy. The second step is the reaction between hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide gas to produce carbon dioxide.

Why Is The Catalytic Converter Important?

  • The catalytic converter is important because it reduces the emissions in a car. It converts harmful gases into harmless ones.
  • A catalytic converter is made of two parts. First, there is a reactor. It contains a mix of catalysts and precious metals, like platinum and rhodium. This mixture is designed to reduce pollutants.
  • The second part is a heat exchanger. It is a long tube with fins that are designed to raise the temperature of the exhaust gases. When an automobile engine operates, there are gases released through the exhaust system. The catalytic converter reduces the number of toxic gases in these exhaust gases by using a chemical reaction.
  • A catalytic converter keeps the car safe and secure because it reduces toxic fumes in the car’s exhaust system, which have harmful effects on humans’ health, such as cancer and heart disease; thus keeping people safe from diseases caused by toxic fumes emitted from cars and other vehicles that use diesel fuel or gasoline fuels for their engines or perform other work or activities that put out large amounts of pollution into the atmosphere or water bodies around them.
  • The catalytic converter also eliminates carbon monoxide gas emissions from vehicles that use diesel fuels for their engines, which can be fatal to humans who breathe it in too much or come into contact with it after being inhaled by someone else who should not have been exposed to it at all.
  • The catalytic converter is important because it keeps the air clean. It protects the environment in two ways: by reducing air pollution and by reducing emissions that can be harmful to human health.
  • The catalytic converter is important because it reduces harmful exhaust gases from engines, which cause a number of health problems that could lead to diseases like cancer.
  • The catalytic converter is important because it reduces pollution in the environment and helps keep the air clean. By converting harmful gases into less harmful ones, the catalytic converter reduces toxic fumes coming out of cars, which can be fatal to humans who breathe them in too much or come into contact with them after being inhaled by someone else who should not have been exposed to them at all.
  • The catalytic converter keeps cars safe and secure because it converts toxic fumes into less harmful ones, which prevents people from getting sick or dying from exposure to these toxins.
  • The catalytic converter keeps the air cleaner by reducing air pollution and toxic emissions coming out of cars, which can be fatal to humans who breathe them in too much or come into contact with them after being inhaled by someone else who should not have been exposed to them at all.

Conclusion

Catalytic converters are important because they reduce harmful emissions. Driving without a catalytic converter can be harmful to your health and the environment. An alternative to having a catalytic converter is the electronic exhaust monitoring system, electronic air-fuel ratio monitor, electronic monitoring of exhaust gas temperature, and EMEMS. These devices monitor the amount of oxygen, emissions, and temperature of the gases in the exhaust system.
