Parents urge UMN to address violent crime on campus

Parents of University of Minnesota students banded together to pressure University and Minneapolis leaders to take action after a recent rise in violent crime on and near campus.

Last year, parents organized a Facebook group called “U of MN parents – campus safety and call to action topics” to address public safety issues. But after recent crimes in front of a property on University Avenue, a block where many students live and visit regularly, the group’s membership rose to over 1,800 people.

Videos of fights breaking out in front of the Students’ Cooperative building on 1721 University Ave. gained widespread attention on social media in May, and on June 3, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the leg near the property. Squatters were evicted from the building on June 4, according to a June 7 email to The Minnesota Daily from the affordable housing provider Students’ Cooperative Inc., who owns the property.

The building has since been secured and boarded up, and the University hired 24/7 security at the property for a 10-day period, which ended June 30.

“We are grateful to all those who have helped support and guide us through this difficult process – our hearts go out to those who have been affected by these tragic events,” the Students’ Cooperative said in an email to The Minnesota Daily.

Since the incident, city and University officials have organized meetings to hear student and parent perspectives and brainstorm potential solutions to prevent and address violent incidents in the future. Ward 2 Council Member Robin Wonsley Worlobah held a town hall meeting June 21 at Van Cleve Park, and Regent James Farnsworth held a meeting at the state Capitol on July 6.

In June, the University of Minnesota Police Department (UMPD) reported there has been a 45% increase in violent crime around the Twin Cities campus since 2019.

The University held its own public safety forum on Monday with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, Minneapolis Interim Police Chief Amelia Huffman and UMPD Chief Matt Clark in attendance to address public safety updates and field questions. University President Joan Gabel attended via Zoom.

Parents share frustrations with police shortages

At Council Member Wonsley’s meeting at Van Cleve Park, Tina Erazmus, director of the University’s Local Government and Community Relations department and Nick Juarez, the community engagement liaison with the University’s Department of Public Safety attended as panelists.

During the meeting, Erazmus stressed that the Students’ Cooperative property was privately owned, so the University would be unable to control what happened to the building.

“I believe it is the hope of the University to own that property and find more renters to live there,” Erazmus said. “[Until then], there is no way that they can guarantee that this is a situation that wouldn’t happen again.”

About 20 people attended the meeting in person and about 80 virtually via Zoom. Parents of University students represented the majority of those present and took the opportunity to make their voices heard. Attendees had the opportunity to submit written questions for the panelists and Council Member Wonsley to answer, but some parents also opted to speak in front of the group.

Parents said they were frustrated that University and Minneapolis officials had cited jurisdiction issues as an explanation for lack of action.

“What I heard here today is that a lot of people say they don’t have jurisdiction for things,” Mike Olsen, parent of a University student, said. “The solutions are very simple. People need to start working together to actually address violent crime…Everybody in the community is a potential victim here.”

Juarez said during the meeting the University recently hired four police officers, but soon after, three of those four quit. He said one officer reported taking a pay cut to move to the University of Wisconsin-Madison because “the atmosphere and support is better over there.”

“It’s dehumanizing; it’s demoralizing when you don’t feel like you have the support of the community you’re policing,” Juarez said. “We should be one University.”

Some parents echoed Jarez’s sentiments about supporting University police.

“What has transpired over the last year was disgusting, honestly,” parent Erin Bruns said after the meeting. “The leadership at the University of Minnesota does not support the police department. And until there’s that support, they can’t fill those vacancies, so who’s gonna do it?”

On June 20, Senior Vice President for Finance and Operations Myron Frans sent an email to University students and staff outlining steps the University is taking to beef up public safety, which included: continuing to invest in overtime for University police officers, using mobile lighting and camera trailers, evaluating adding additional security personnel on campus and launching a safety awareness campaign in the fall.

“UMPD has the full support of the University’s leadership,” Frans said in a statement to The Minnesota Daily. “Our directive from President Gabel and our Board of Regents is to continue investing more in public safety than we ever have, both financially and by visibly and vocally supporting the critical safety work taking place on and near our campus every day.”

Council Member Wonsley said she wanted to continue to organize forums to discuss ideas for change.

“The biggest thing that I walked away with from that meeting is that parents want to see leadership at the University of Minnesota as well as the City of Minneapolis,” Wonsley said. “We’ll come back with some of the ways in which we think we can be proactive around some of the things that were raised.”

Because not all written questions were answered at the meeting, Wonsley sent answers in a follow-up email on Saturday. In response to being asked what will be done to address the increase of violent crime this summer, she responded that she is committed to expanding innovative public safety measures, such as the Behavioral Health Crisis Response team, which Wonsley said has been shown to effectively prevent crime.

Wonsley also wrote that she attended hiring and training events for Minneapolis police officers and found recruiting and retaining “quality” officers is “extremely difficult” right now because of MPD’s reputation “as a Department where employees face discrimination from their colleagues, where training and policy enforcement are inconsistent, and where even officers with the best of intentions might be put in riskier situations more frequently than in other local PDs, which function more consistently.”

“I think it is clear to everyone that our current public safety system isn’t working for anyone,” Wonsley wrote. “It isn’t working for residents who are apprehensive about being victims of crime. It isn’t working for residents who are apprehensive about being victims of police brutality and misconduct. It isn’t working for officers who are leaving the force at extremely high rates due to PTSD.”

Listening session provides space for collaboration

Despite reassurance that the Board of Regents and President Gabel are taking their outrage seriously, parents said they have felt their campaign for change has not been heard and addressed. An exception, parents said, is Regent Farnsworth, who organized a listening session at the state Capitol on Monday. The session drew a similar crowd to the meeting at Van Cleve Park, with about 100 people attending in person and online.

Attendees were invited to speak in front of the group and shared their opinions about how to make campus safer, stories of dangers their children had experienced near the University and frustrations about the University’s response to their concerns.

Jennifer French spoke over Zoom and said her oldest son’s friend was shot on campus, which inspired her to form the parent’s public safety Facebook group in 2021.

“I wish I knew what to do because otherwise I would do it, but we just absolutely need to know what is going on,” French said during the meeting. “One of the biggest complaints on this website is that no one tells us what’s going on. And I feel like they have a right to do that. To hear us.”

Parent Brian Peck presented his own compilation of violent crime data in the University neighborhood, taken from the City of Minneapolis’ database. He created a bar graph showing violent crime by month from January 2019 to May 2022, with the trend line indicating that crime has continued to rise over time.

“My proposal has been all along that we need a scorecard. We need to try something new, and then let’s see if these trends change. If they don’t, then we have to try something else,” Peck said. “We can’t wait because every second we wait, that’s more violent crimes that happen and that’s more increased anxiety for the students or anybody that walks around there.”

Most people who spoke up were parents of students at the University, but Morgan McElroy, who graduated from the University in 2021, presented his own message as an alumnus who was involved in campus safety as a leader in his fraternity and a member of student government.

McElroy said that while he was a student, he wrote a letter to regents, the president, city council members and state representatives, among others, pushing for 12 measures he believed could help make campus safer. He eventually received responses acknowledging his concerns but said University leaders failed to work with him to bring any of his requests to fruition.

Measures he advocated for include communicating with MPD over “hurt feelings” shared in Gabel’s decision to cut ties with them in May 2020 so they would patrol off-campus neighborhoods again, coordinating with Dinkytown businesses and apartment complexes to place external cameras to watch the streets and improving SafeU crime alerts to include more detailed physical descriptions and provide follow-up messages when cases are closed.

He said he has continued to fight for change post graduation and is now supporting the efforts of parents in the Facebook group.

Member of the University student group Students for a Democratic Society Cal Mergendahl said they think there is reason to be concerned about violent crime on campus, but parents who have been speaking out don’t always have a direct understanding of life on campus and the “reality of the situation.”

“Campus is a pretty safe place to be…maybe the safest place to be in the City of Minneapolis,” Mergendahl said.

Mergendahl said University leaders have been concerned with appearing as if they are working to address crime in neighborhoods near campus, such as Dinkytown, but in reality, they lack jurisdiction outside of campus. Mergendahl said the University is losing UMPD officers because of culture issues within the force, not because of lack of administrative or student support.

Frans said the University funded the UMPD’s entire budget request for the upcoming year, according to an email to The Minnesota Daily.

“If UMPD wants to really address this culture issue, it needs to be holding itself accountable,” Mergendahl said. “Until then, the administration is throwing money at the problem and it’s not doing anything.”

McElroy said it’s important to form a committee that includes underrepresented voices to share public safety concerns.

“I think there’s a lot we can do; it doesn’t necessarily have to just be armed police,” McElroy said. “This shouldn’t be political, and the fact that it is, is why we’re not seeing a whole lot of traction. We really just need to get people to sit down and figure out what that common thread is because I know it exists.”

Carl Lewis, Will Blackburn take reins of UH track and field

After Leroy Burrell’s departure to Auburn, UH track and field is staying in-house as it begins a new era by naming Will Blackburn the program’s director and promoting Carl Lewis to fill the head coach position, the University announced Thursday morning.

Will and Carl are both incredible representatives and products of the University of Houston, Houston Athletics and our track and field programs,” said athletic director Chris Pezman. I am personally grateful for their leadership during this transitionary time. We are fortunate to have individuals of their caliber leading our program with Will doing so on the day-to-day side and Carl as head coach. They are two of the very best in the country.”

This move comes after Burrell, who had been at the helm of the Cougars’ track and field program for 23 years, announced he was leaving UH to take over as head coach of Auburn’s track and field program in June.

Lewis, who starred at UH as a sprinter and long jumper before becoming one of the most decorated Olympians in history with nine gold medals, has been on the UH track and field staff since 2013 and played a pivotal role in the Cougars’ immense success under Burrell, particularly in sprinting events.

“I am excited to continue with this staff on our journey to win a national championship,” Lewis said. “We wanted to continue the legacy of Leroy Burrell and Tom Tellez and agreed this was the way to do it. Will and I have known each other for multiple years and are looking forward to leading this team to all the things we want to do and keeping the history and tradition of #HTownSpeedCity alive.”

Blackburn competed as a thrower during his time as a student-athlete at UH before joining the Cougars’ coaching staff in 2000 to help develop throwers, long jumpers and triple jumpers.

Along with overseeing the program as a whole in his director role, Blackburn will also continue to coach the throwing and horizontal jumping events.

“What an exciting opportunity to continue and build upon the success and achievements of the long-celebrated history of the University of Houston Track and Field program,” Blackburn said. “The Houston Track and Field program is about continuing and building upon its historic legacy. Pre-Signups for zant. Be amongst the first.

[BRIDGEWATER, NEW JERSEY, JULY 14, 2022] With the stress of school and looming post-graduation adulthood, many students struggle with their mental health but do not have access to or cannot afford quality care. A new startup is disrupting the space with low cost, high-quality mental health services through an app called “zant.” They have recently announced that they are now accepting pre-registrations from college students. The company plans to offer its services at $25 per session with flexibility for less and will provide access to mental health professionals in over 20 niche categories across the nation.

Zant.’s founder and CEO, Maggie Rose Macar, created the app after struggling to find a professional for herself. “I had just lost a close friend to suicide and needed to see someone, but was shocked when I finally found someone I thought could help and they were $150 per session,” said Macar. “zant. solves many problems, but affordability is at the core. We make this as headache free as possible and eliminate the many roadblocks that stop those struggling from getting the help they need.”

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 1 in 5 college students experience mental illness and 75% of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 24. This mobile app, zant., is looking to fill the gap in affordable, accessible mental health care for this population. College students can choose from a variety of professionals, from trauma specialists, eating disorder mentors, stress and college life coaches, and more. App users will have access to a secure chat room where they can share information with their professionals and other members of their treatment team. Sessions are conducted via phone or video call which remain confidential.

Zant. is quickly gaining traction among college students through its growing list of pre-registrations. The soon-to-launch app’s goal is to provide students with the tools they need to succeed in college and beyond. In addition to mental health services, zant. also offers student wellness programs to help students maintain a healthy lifestyle through their college or university. Zant. believes that providing student mental health services and student wellness programs, will help students succeed in college and life. Users can join the zant. community and pre-register here.

‘Everyday he’s fired up’:Kellen Sampson’s impact on UH basketball

UH basketball’s Kellen Sampson first joined the Cougars back in 2014 to be the assistant coach along side his father, Kelvin Sampson, and the father-son coaching duo has since rebuilt the program for success, including an unforgettable Final Four run just two seasons ago and an Elite Eight appearance a season later.

While often being casted in the shadows of his father, Kellen brings his own flare to the program and aims to set himself apart from his father when it comes to complementary coaching.

“I think the worst thing I can do is be another version of (Kelvin), he’s one of one,” Kellen Sampson said. “He’s not out there trying to emulate me and I don’t need to be out there emulating him, I need to be the best version of Kellen Sampson I can be.”

According to players such as redshirt junior forward J’Wan Roberts and fifth-year forward Reggie Chaney, Kellen takes on a more of a mentor role, especially amongst the big-men on the roster.

“He shows me a lot. He’s a great mentor, he pushes you every day to perform to the best of your ability,” Roberts said.

“He’s a teacher, he teaches us so much on and off the court. I feel like he’s that father figure we all look up to, he just teaches us a lot,” Chaney said.

Kellen’s relationship with players carries beyond the basketball court, with Roberts mentioning how much he learns from Kellen just about life in general throughout his time with the program.

“I would say it’s deeper than basketball,” Roberts said.”Off the court he still shows me tips, gives me life lessons. He’s the reason I am where I am today.”

Meanwhile, the style of coaching Kellen brings on the court is highlighted by his personality and intensity, intensity that parallels with his father’s, according to Roberts and Chaney.

“His character I think is the biggest thing, his personality,” Chaney says. “Everyday he’s fired up just like Coach (Kelvin) Sampson. He comes in and he’s the same person everyday, working.”

“He comes in and sets the standard, there’s a reason we are where we’re at right now,”Roberts said. “Everybody’s just locked in with each other, especially Coach Kellen and Coach Sampson. They have the same intensity.”

For Kellen, his ability to provide that intensity and personality each and every day comes from the belief his father instilled in him and Kellen recognizes how vital it is for a coach to provide that on a daily basis.

“One of the things I learned from my dad is the best thing you can do is be yourself every single day,” Kellen said. “As a coach, you’re never allowed to have a bad day. So if you’re energetic, fired up and your fuse is lit and ready to go on a Monday, you have the responsibility to be that same person on Tuesday.”

Players believe what Kellen brings to the program is unique and while he’s the assistant coach at the moment, his players believe he is destined for greatness.

“I would honestly say Coach (Kelvin) Sampson is a hall of fame coach hands down, and I really feel like Coach Kellen is following right in his footsteps,” Roberts said.

Fresh faces among old timers: 2022 Wimbledon recap

Fresh faces among old timers: 2022 Wimbledon recap

Last weekend, tennis fans witnessed two Wimbledon finals with three first-time Slam finalists. While the finalists were unexpected, the tennis whites and highbrow, typically-British atmosphere were not. With the championship a crowd favorite, this year’s finals made headlines and broadcasts around the world. Fans also welcomed their newest Wimbledon champions at the close of the two weeks: Novak Djokovic and Elena Rybakina.

The ladies’ singles draw, as usual for Wimbledon, bore witness to unpredictable results across the board. Seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams lost an intense three-set match on Centre Court to Harmony Tan of France in the first round, 5-7, 6-1, 6-7 (7). While it was good for the tennis world to see the most dominant woman of the last two decades return after a one-year layoff, it does seem that the winning days of Williams, who turns 41 in September, may be over.

Other surprising early exits include world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, No. 5 Maria Sakkari and 2018 Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber. The 2022 French Open champion Swiatek had ridden a historic 37-match winning streak going into the third round of Wimbledon, where she lost surprisingly to Frenchwoman Alize Cornet in straight sets, 4-6, 2-6.

No. 16 seed Simona Halep, winner of Wimbledon in 2019, had an impressive showing at the championships, dominating her way to the semifinals before losing to eventual champion, No. 17 Rybakina of Kazakhstan.

On the other side of the draw, unseeded German Tatjana Maria, who had previously advanced to the third round of a major just once (Wimbledon 2015), fought her way through to the semifinals with wins over Sakkari and No. 12 seed Jelena Ostapenko. Maria fell in the semifinals to No. 3 seed Ons Jabeur, 2-6, 6-3, 1-6.

Hailing from Tunisia, Jabeur became the first ever African woman to reach the final of Wimbledon with her win over Maria. Jabeur’s hard-hitting shots at the baseline, in combination with her insane touch and hand softness to make beautiful dropshots, were not enough to win the tournament, as she fell to Rybakina in the final, 6-3, 2-6, 2-6.

The 23-year-old Rybakina is the first player representing Kazakhstan to win a Grand Slam singles tournament. Born in Moscow, Rybakina began representing Kazakhstan in 2018 after moving to Kazakhstan due to financial problems. While the Russian Tennis Federation has attempted to claim credit for Rybakina’s win, she continues to vocalize that she is proud to represent Kazakhstan as she did in the 2020 Olympics.

In the gentlemen’s draw, some championship favorites had troubles early on. 19-year-old star Carlos Alcaraz made it to the fourth round before being beaten by Italian Jannik Sinner. Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, 21, also suffered an early loss. Out in the first round with three out of four sets going to tiebreak, the Canadian lost to American Maxime Cressy.

American fans saw a glimmer of hope for their male compatriots, who rarely have a chance to shine at Grand Slams. Californian Taylor Fritz, 24, had the best Slam showing of his career by making it to the quarterfinals, losing only to Rafael Nadal. And before that, eight Americans had qualified for the third round — the most since 1995.

For this year’s championship, some of the men’s biggest tennis stars were absent from the courts. Wimbledon veteran Roger Federer is still out with a knee injury, and Russian players including Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev are banned by the tournament organizers following Russia’s actions in Ukraine earlier this year.

Former No. 3 Dominic Thiem similarly finds himself out in recovery from a wrist injury, and 2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini withdrew late in the game after a positive COVID-19 test, as did 2017 Wimbledon runner-up Marin Cilic.

Withdrawals didn’t just happen before the tournament, though. Crowd favorite second-seed Nadal was forced to withdraw from his semifinal match against Nick Kyrgios, citing an abdominal injury. This sent Australian Kyrgios to his first-ever Grand Slam final, despite a career-high ranking of 13.

In reaching the final, Kyrgios beat fourth-seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in what could be considered an upset match in the third round. Trailing in aces and net points won, the Australian had 61 winners over Tsitsipas’ 57, as well as 154 total points won, 10 more than his opponent. This handed Kyrgios a 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(7) win — and, arguably, a place in the final.

It also handed him a $4,000 fine.

Both players ended up receiving fines — Tsitsipas’ reaching $10,000 for “unsportsmanlike conduct” — for the match. Tsitsipas hit a ball into the scoreboard, for which he received a point penalty, in reaction to a legal but rare underarm serve from his opponent. He also received a warning for nearly hitting a spectator after hitting a ball into the crowd. Kyrgios was fined for “audible obscenity” after arguing with the chair umpire.

“You’re a disgrace,” Kyrgios said to the umpire, arguing that Tsitsipas should have received more than a warning. “I’m not playing until we get to the bottom of it. You can’t hit a ball into the crowd and it’s not a default.”

In the final, Kyrgios faced Djokovic, the No. 1 seed. Djokovic, with six Wimbledon titles under his belt ahead of this year, was always going to be a tough opponent for Kyrgios, a player who has historically struggled with taking the game seriously and focusing during matches.

And tough he was. In four sets, the Serb beat Kyrgios 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3), dropping only the first set. Djokovic’s consistency and solid groundstrokes from the baseline trumped Kyrgios’ typically flashy points — he was only thrown in the first set before regaining composure. The win puts Djokovic at 21 singles Slam titles, one away from tying for first place with Nadal for the most ever.

While the winner in the gentlemen’s draw was arguably expected, the final matchup and ladies’ winners were not. This gave fans globally a whirlwind of a championship to follow, highlighting the often chaotic nature of tennis. As Wimbledon has come to a close, fans and players alike set their sights on the next Grand Slam, the U.S. Open, held in New York City at the end of August.

U Experts Say For Many, Abortion Has Always Been Inaccessible

With a near total abortion ban pending in Utah, many are worried about the future of reproductive rights — a future that holds serious implications for women and other groups.

On Friday, June 24, the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which had previously allowed abortions in the first two trimesters of pregnancy on a federal level. Now, it is up to individual states to determine their abortion laws.

This ruling holds serious implications for any person who could become pregnant, healthcare providers, people of color and more.

Yasi Shaker, who uses she and they pronouns, is a doctoral student and graduate teacher of the sociology of gender and sexuality at the University of Utah. Shaker has been frustrated by the gendered and exclusive language used to talk about abortions.

“It is important to understand that people of all genders have abortions,” she said in an email interview.

An Evolving Landscape

Misha Pangasa, a board-certified OB-GYN at the U Hospital, said there is fear among providers about the ambiguity of the law.

“People are asking, what if a patient presents with this thing that I know could be life-threatening, can I take care of them?” she said. “What if a patient presents with this other thing that may be life-threatening in a few days, can I take care of them?”

Pangasa has already heard of some providers who delayed that care because they were scared of losing their license or facing legal consequences for doing what they believed to be medically correct.

“We didn’t go to medical school to be felons,” she said.

This uncertainty and fear also rings true for the patients themselves — some are unsure about what their current options are.

“I have to give so much credit to the office managers and nurses and clinical assistants who are answering phones and calling patients and scheduling them right now because, you know, the law has changed like at least five times in the last two weeks,” Pangasa said.

As a general OB-GYN, Pangasa does pap smears, counsels patients on contraception, cares for pre-menopausal and post-menopausal individuals, delivers babies and performs C-sections. Along with this work, she also provides abortion care.

Pangasa has worked in other states that have fewer restrictions on abortion care and has found that people seek abortions for similar reasons, regardless of their location. What is different about Utah, though, is the number of hoops a patient must jump through to actually get one.

“They have to go through an online module that’s essentially approved by the legislature, which contains some non-factual information and certainly presents a significant amount of stigma and shame to those patients,” she said. “Once they do that, they have to have a face-to-face interaction with a health care provider in order to sign a consent after the provider reads a state-mandated script, again, that has some questionably factual information.”

After that, they have to wait an additional 72 hours before they can proceed. Pangasa said the shame and stigma from the community also serve as a barrier for those seeking abortion care.

Abortion Access

Pangasa said access to abortion care is essential for many reasons — a fundamental one being bodily autonomy.

“If you don’t have the right to take care of your own body, you literally cannot be considered a free person in society,” she said.

Abortion care is also life-saving, Pangasa explained. Carrying a pregnancy to term and undergoing childbirth is more dangerous than having an abortion.

“I was on call on labor and delivery just last weekend, and there were no less than four women whose lives were significantly threatened by their delivery,” she said. “And that’s just a fraction of what we see.”

Pangasa cited the Turnaway Study, explaining there are significant, long-term harms to denying someone an abortion, such as remaining in poverty, being unable to afford housing and being more likely to stay in contact with violent partners.

Shaker said those who will still be able to access abortion despite this legislation are affluent and typically white.

Prior to the ban, BIPOC, transgender people, immigrants and disabled individuals already faced barriers to accessing abortion, they said.

“The ban exacerbates the systemic injustices and makes it even harder for folks to receive care,” Shaker said. “The struggle for reproductive rights and body autonomy for BIPOC folks is constant and is important to decenter whiteness in [these] conversations.”

According to Pangasa, those with fewer resources, who already are disproportionately impacted by pregnancy-related morbidity and mortality and face systemic racism in healthcare, are going to give birth in scenarios they did not want to.

“So in simple terms, that means that the people with the fewest resources are inevitably going to have more pregnancy-related complications, and more of them are going to die from this decision,” she said.

Banning abortion does not stop people from getting abortions — according to Shaker, it just makes safe abortions less accessible.

Advocating for Justice

As a researcher of environmental, food, racial and reproductive justice, among other areas, Shaker emphasized the sociological synthesis of issues — for example, reproductive justice is connected to both environmental and economic justice.

“As environmental stressors increase (pollution, etc.) with climate change, maternal and infant mortality increase, with the effect disproportionately affecting communities of color, so not having this body autonomy leads to further killing of Black and Brown women,” they said.

To contextualize abortion care, Pangasa spoke about the psychological principle of the tension of opposites, where two opposite things can be true at the same time.

“As a physician who provides abortion care, I understand that there’s a potential life there that people want to protect — I understand that,” she said.

On the flip side, she said there is a person with a heartbeat and aspirations and a body that is also impacted by pregnancy.

“And that is what drives me to do the work that I do because even though it’s complicated and nuanced, I understand that as human beings, decisions are complex and nuanced,” Pangasa said. “Turning our backs on those people is inevitably going to cause more harm in this world.”

Kuboba Spot brings Filipino-inspired flavors to Telegraph Ave.

Kuboba Spot brings Filipino-inspired flavors to Telegraph Ave.

Gavin Sagastume/Staff
Following a soft opening June 18, Koboba Spot on Telegraph Avenue aims to set itself apart from other boba chains with its Filipino-inspired flavors.

Bypass several chain boba shops on Telegraph Avenue to find Kuboba Spot, a boba cafe featuring fresh fruit drinks and Filipino-inspired pastries.

According to Sam Bernardino, co-owner of Kuboba Spot, the shop’s name comes from the Tagalog bahay kubo, an iconic type of stilt house in the Philippines. Many of the decorations inside Kuboba Spot pay homage to the style, including a “TikTok wall” for patrons to take pictures.

“We want this to be very homey,” said co-owner Seyna Smith. “Whoever comes in, I want them to feel like, ‘Oh, okay, I can actually sit down and I can actually have a nice drink and something to eat.’”

In addition to indoor and outdoor seating, the shop also features a glass partition at the counter so patrons can see their drinks and pastries being prepared.

During the past few weeks, Smith said Kuboba Spot served about 75 patrons per day, with some days having more than 120. However, the owners anticipate “heavy traffic” when students return to Berkeley for the fall semester.

“We always ask for their name. If it’s not too busy, we always like to go and talk to them,” Smith said. “Our customer service is what we pride ourselves on.”

Kuboba Spot celebrated its soft opening June 18, but it previously opened pop-ups and catered throughout Contra Costa County, Smith said.

Both Smith and Bernardino used to work in the healthcare industry, but Smith said the COVID-19 pandemic encouraged them to “go for what their dreams were.” For Smith, this dream was to open a bakery, and for Bernardino, it was to open a cafe and lounge — so they combined the concepts.

The menu currently features a variety of drinks and pastries. According to Smith and Bernardino, some highlights include buko pandan — a popular Filipino dessert — as well as a strawberry Potchi drink inspired by the Filipino candy and empanadas filled with kaldereta, a traditional Filipino beef stew.

So far, the buko pandan drink is popular with customers, as are the kaldereta empanadas and chicken adobo empanadas.

UC Berkeley rising sophomore Ysabella Carrera said she liked the adobo empanadas and buko pandan, adding that they were “really Filipino-tasting.” Carrera also noted the price was more reasonable compared to other boba shops in Berkeley.

However, what sets Kuboba Spot apart from the many other boba shops in Southside is its concept and interactions with customers, Smith added.

“It’s the fact that you’re seeing someone actually making your empanadas, or you’re able to talk to the person that’s making your drink,” Smith said. “We try to make it as personalized as possible.”

Are Ear Drops Supposed To Drain Out

You know that feeling when your ears feel clogged, and you can’t get that annoying itch to go away? It’s so frustrating! You try to blow your nose, shake your head, and even tilt it side to side, but nothing works. And if you Google your symptoms, the top results are all about ear wax as the main cause of clogged ears. In most cases, you may have excess earwax and not realize it. When the excess wax builds up inside the canal, it becomes harder for air to pass through. This creates a vacuum-like effect that pulls on the eardrum with every breath you take. As a result of these two actions combined together, your ears start to “feel clogged.” But don’t worry; it’s actually easy to prevent this from happening again! Here are some tips on how you can drain your ears and avoid them getting clogged again in the future.

Are Ear Drops Supposed To Drain Out?

Yes, they are supposed to drain out. Ear drops are a solution meant to be used in the ear canal. If you use them in your ears, they will not do anything. They will sit there and not do anything at all.

How To Drain Your Ears And Prevent It From Happening Again

Step 1: Dry your ears with a towel after showering or swimming

Drying your ears is the first step to preventing clogged ears. Water can easily get into your ears, especially after a shower or a swim. You can prevent water from getting into your ears by using a towel to dry them. When you come out of the shower, wrap a towel around your head. You can also use a hairdryer to speed up the drying process. If you swim, you must always dry your ears after a swim! It’s best to do this before you get out of the water.

Step 2: Massage the outside of your ear

Next, you can massage the outside of your ear to help drain it. Here’s how you can do it: – Gently massage the outside of your ear – This will help to drain your ear and unclog it. – Try to do it for at least 30 seconds – Repeat this process every day until your ears unclog. – Place your index finger inside your ear canal – Do it gently, so you don’t hurt yourself accidentally. – Move your finger inside your ear – This will help loosen the earwax inside your ear canal. – Remove your finger from your ear – Do this slowly, so you don’t hurt yourself.

Step 3: Use a vacuum cleaner to remove excess wax

Next, you can use a vacuum cleaner to remove excess earwax. This is a great way to unclog your ears, especially if you have a lot of earwax in your ears. Here’s how you can do it: – Find a vacuum cleaner with a clear tube and ear attachment – You can go to a medical supply store or pharmacy and get one. – Attach the tube to your vacuum cleaner – Make sure it fits properly. – Hold the vacuum cleaner over your ears – Make sure the attachment is touching your ear. – Press the button on the vacuum cleaner – This will suck out the earwax. – Repeat this process on the other ear – You can also do this on both ears at the same time.

Step 4: Try different ear drops to find what works for you.

Ear drops can also be used to unclog your ears. You can buy them over the counter at a pharmacy without a prescription. Make sure you follow the directions on the bottle and talk to your doctor if you have any questions. When you want to unclog your ears, place the drops inside your ear. Let them sit for a few minutes before you flush them out. You can use these drops every day until your ears are unclogged. You can also use a mixture of water and baking soda to unclog your ears. This works exceptionally well for children who have clogged ears. It’s also safe for adults who have clogged ears.

You Have a Cold:

If you have a cold, your ears will drain because of the mucus in your ear canal and the pain it causes when it gets infected and inflamed.

You Have a Headache:

If you have a headache, this can cause pain in both ears which can cause them to drain.

You Are Tired:

If you are tired, this can cause pain in both ears which can cause them to drain.
