Oregon acrobatics and tumbling assistant coach leaves program

Oregon acrobatics and tumbling assistant coach Karly Nowak is leaving the program, the team announced on Thursday in an Instagram post. The former All-American will pursue a career path in nursing.

Nowak spent four years at Oregon as an athlete, where her honors included a National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling Association (NCATA) All-American selection in 2023 and selection as the Athlete of the Week following the Ducks’ win over then-second ranked Azusa Pacific University during that season. Her career also included four selections to the NCATA Academic Honor Roll.

Following her graduation from the university with a degree in human physiology and the completion of the 2023 season, Nowak returned to Matthew Knight Arena that summer as an assistant coach under Taylor Susnara. Susnara told The Daily Emerald in 2024 that Nowak, “Knows my good qualities [and] the qualities that I could work on as a coach.”

Nowak’s connection with the athletes she coached — many were her former teammates — was consistently cited as one of her key skills.

“I think that I have a good connection with a lot of them, and I know them really well,” Nowak told The Emerald in 2024, “and I think I know how to get to them and know how to talk to them and what they need at certain times.”

“I’m just so grateful for Karly and Taylor (and) that they’re putting me in the spot that I’ve been in,” Oregon base Bella Swarthout told The Emerald in 2024. “They trust me in certain skills, because it really is just accomplishing such a dream for me.”

Susnara remains under contract with the university, with whom her contract runs through the 2028 season. Assistant coach Jacie Van de Zilver, who joined the program for the 2024 season on a one-year contract that was set to expire on June 30, has not yet been confirmed to return.

This is a breaking story, and may be updated.

Parking Costs Climb Again

In the next chapter for the continued struggle for parking on campus, a new foe appears: increased prices.

The university’s Board of Trustees approved a new parking rate schedule for 2024 through 2028, proposed by Commuter Services in March 2023, that will gradually raise parking fees for drivers.

“Balancing the high demand for parking across main campus and the University of Utah Health campus and appropriately pricing the cost of parking permits has always been a complex and nuanced issue that university leaders need to regularly revisit,” the U said in a press release.

Rising Costs

This past year, parking has become a source of frustration for many university drivers. Many off-campus students rely on campus parking to attend their classes, and some have expressed concern that the price increase could pose a financial burden.

In 2026, an “A” permit will cost $1,024.56, which will be a 10% increase from the 2025 prices.

In 2023, for an off-campus student, a basic parking pass costs $172.50. By the end of the Board’s approved price increase schedule in 2028, the basic parking pass will cost $516.48.

These changes in parking can be aligned with U President Taylor Randall’s vision for “college town magic,” which he describes as the physical development framework that hopes to transform the traditionally commuter school to a residential, student-centered university.

As parking will be harder for some to obtain, this could eliminate the commuter-school culture that the U has developed.

“The university recognizes that addressing parking challenges requires a multifaceted approach,” the U said. “In addition to adjusting permit rates, the university is exploring innovative solutions, such as increasing on-campus housing options to reduce the need for commuting.”

In comparison

Compared to other Utah universities, the U’s parking rates are among the highest. Utah Valley University’s least expensive parking option, the “yellow pass,” costs $115 per year — compared to the U’s basic permit, which will cost $213.36 per semester starting this fall.

At Brigham Young University, prices can vary depending on where students live on campus, but most of the parking prices range from $15 to $60.

Out of these three schools — the U, BYU, and UVU — the U is the only one that does not offer free parking for its staff and faculty.

Eligible faculty can purchase a parking permit through payroll deduction, which takes $42.69 from each paycheck to cover the cost of the pass.

Faculty who are not eligible for payroll deduction must pay the full semester price for a parking pass.

End Goals

According to Commuter Services’ price breakdown, 38% of parking revenue goes toward funding Campus Shuttles and the university’s partnership with UTA.

Commuter Services allocates 21% of the revenue to paying off debt from constructing parking garages and other campus facilities, while 20% goes toward maintaining those parking areas.

The U also cited sustainability as a reason for raising parking prices, noting that making driving less accessible encourages use of public transportation options like Trax.

“By encouraging mass transit ridership and exploring alternative forms of commuting, the university aims to reduce reliance on single-occupancy vehicles while providing equitable access to parking for its diverse campus population,” the U said.

Community rallies behind Pink Place

The Como neighborhood is no stranger to DIY house venues. On most weekends during the spring, summer and fall, you can find a Como house hosting some of the University’s favorite local bands.

Since the summer of 2023, Pink Place has been no different. This house has hosted dozens of local musicians and bands on their backyard stage with the iconic pink house as its backdrop.

Pink Place has garnered a lively community of music lovers and musicians for the past three years, with this summer noted as their official end.

However, this final season nearly came to an unexpected and early end when Millennium Management, their landlord company, served Pink Place’s residents a cease and desist; a legal letter sent to an alleged culprit demanding the end of alleged misconduct or wrongful actions.

“We’ve never had many, if any at all, complaints from neighbors to us personally,” Griffin Baumann, resident and venue host, said. “We were very prepared to make it work with anyone who would come talk to us. But the complaint  went to the police, and then to our management.”

According to Millennium Management, a noise complaint was issued to the city of Minneapolis police department on June 24 regarding activities at Pink Place and their shows. Millennium Management was informed not only of a noise complaint but of the alleged sale of goods for profit, which goes against the city of Minneapolis Ordinance.

Millennium Management public relations said the company is not opposed to tenants having gatherings as long as they are respectful of neighbors.

“They need to follow the city ordinance, and the sale of alcohol, drugs, food, and or ticket charges for personal profit is prohibited,” the representative said.

Pink Place volunteer Maeve Seymour said alcohol or drugs have never been sold on the premises of Pink Place. However, they noted the sale of merchandise and food.

“It’s like any show you go to where bands are selling t-shirts, merch, stuff like that,” Seymour said. “We tried to offer a space for local artists to have a place to share their art.”

To save the venue for its final three shows, a petition was posted to the Pink Place Instagram page asking supporters to sign a form. The petition was intended to make their landlord recognize the importance of this venue and the community they have fostered.

To the surprise of both Pink Place residents and volunteers, the petition garnered mass attention and support. Baumann said they recalled the petition receiving 1,345 signatures in less than 48 hours.

“The biggest thing the petition did was show that we are not disrupting around here,” Baumann said. “A lot of the people who commented on it are our neighbors and people who live nearby who are very happy with what we do.”

On the petition website, around 50 comments were left by supporters of Pink Place, sharing their memories and admiration for the venue and those who operate it.

I live four houses away, and the shows here have brought nothing but joy to my entire household,” a commenter said. “When I can’t make it to a show, I go out onto my porch and dance with my cat (he likes the music), and venues such as this bring nothing but vibrance and joy to the Como community.”.

With the community’s support, negotiations between Pink Place and Millennium Management led to a removal of the cease and desist and an approval for the venue’s final three shows — provided that no illegal activity occurred on or in connection with the property.

Seymour said Pink Place has always felt like a positive force in the neighborhood.

“I think now more than ever, we need safe, fun community space where people can create together and have fun together and protect one another,” Seymour said.

While Pink Place will serve its final bow on Aug. 2, the legacy of Pink Place may carry on. Baumann shared his aspirations for the future of Pink Place and a possible return as an official venue location.

“This is something me and some of my other roommates have realized might be what we want to do with our lives,” Baumann said. “We do hope to eventually own our own building and have an actual space. We would love to make a real venue someday.”

Correction: A previous version misspelled Maeve Seymour’s name. The correct spelling is Seymour.

Hundreds Rally at Capitol, Good Trouble Follows

Over 300 people gathered at the State Capitol Thursday evening as part of the nationwide day of action, “Good Trouble Lives On”, responding to attacks on civil and human rights from the Trump Administration. The event was founded on the legacy of the late ‘Big Six’ civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis.

The rally hosted various local organizations, including the Party for Socialism and Liberation Salt Lake (PSL Salt Lake), Utah State Progressive Caucus, League of Women Voters Utah and Salt Lake Indivisible. There were musical performances, chants and speakers such as Jeanetta Williams, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Salt Lake and novelist-activist Darlene McDonald.

The speeches covered specific pieces of legislation like federal HR 1, known as the Big Beautiful Bill, and local 287(G) policy that was passed in Utah County a day before. But more common were connections between mass deportation efforts, escalation in the Middle East, the erasure and targeting of transgender individuals and calls to use growing frustration to unite citizens around the country.

“We have a responsibility to John Lewis and others who stayed in the fight, who didn’t give up, and who worked together for the good of all,” Williams said.

Protestor Experiences

The Chronicle spoke to protesters and members of organizations about their reasons and thoughts behind participating in the protest.

Bailee Watson, 28, described the importance of sending a message that people in Utah care about what is happening around the world.

“It’s especially important to show up for Utah because everyone has got that stereotype that no one in Utah gives a shit, so I really like getting to see all the people that do give a shit,” Watson said.

Louise Edington, 65, vice chair of Utah State’s Progressive Caucus, emphasized the importance of nonviolent resistance.

“I’m a fan of peaceful protests, like John Lewis was himself, so I prefer this kind of gathering. But consistent protesting just shows the powers that be that we don’t agree with what they’re doing,” Edington said.

Denise Weaver, 31, lead organizer for PSL Salt Lake, spoke about the value of protesting in creating political power and building unity within communities.

“I think that the way that protesting shows political power is not so much in the coming out and the protesting, but it’s showing that we are all united by these issues,” Weaver said. “Ultimately, people are coming out because they care about these ideas, but what they’re looking for is real material change in their lives.”

What’s Next

Organizations utilized the event to connect with protesters through various tools such as a voter registration booth, a summer course from PSL, safe sex education pamphlets from Planned Parenthood and petitions against 287 G. Kate Ryman, a member of Salt Lake Indivisible, explained what the event means for the future of their organization.

“In Utah, where we’re so gerrymandered, our vote is diminished in so many different ways that I think that people are eager to start pivoting,” Ryman said. “We will start to do things around the midterms and start looking for ways to tell people about phone banking, about postcarding, about knocking on doors, things like that.”

The protestors referenced John Lewis’s good trouble slogan throughout the evening. After two hours, the protest ended with cheers, invitations to future demonstrations and a Lewis quote delivered by Williams, “We’re stronger together again. I deem the fierce urgency of now, the fierce agents’ urgency of now. The time is now. Let’s be bold and make good trouble.”
