With under two weeks until Selection Sunday, Houston remained at No. 1 in the latest AP poll released on Monday morning.

The Cougars (27-2, 15-1 AAC) went 2-0 over the past week with victories over Tulane and East Carolina to clinch their second straight American Athletic Conference regular-season title and fourth in the past five years.

UH, a team that currently holds the top spot in both the NCAA NET rankings and KenPom ratings, has won nine games in a row and 18 of their last 19.

With two games left in the regular season, the Cougars are projected to be the Midwest Region’s top seed which would be just the second time in program history that UH held a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the other coming in 1983.

This is UH’s sixth week occupying the AP poll this season. The Cougars received 49 of the 62 first-place votes.

Charity, community, diversity: Project Pizza

Project Pizza has served Larimer County good food and good times for a cause since 2021.

“This idea of a mobile pizza truck was pitched to a previous employer, and when they decided not to move forward with the idea, we decided it would be a great fit for us on our own,” founder Isaiah Ruffin said. “(It’s) a way to combine the passion for food literacy and the skill of cooking.”

Currently the company has a program called the Food Lit Foundation. This charity funds gardens for many schools in the Larimer area and food literacy programs for students. The awardees of the quarterly Learning Garden Grant receive $500 and a pizza party thrown by Project Pizza.

Ruffin’s wife, Colleen Constant, was at his side from the very beginning. Constant is the co-owner and the director of administration for Project Pizza. She controls scheduling, employment and any administrative needs. Constant is also head of community engagement, which means businesses reach out to her and she ensures the schools who win the Learning Garden Grant receive their pizza parties in a timely manner.

“I decided I was done working for other people and was excited for the next adventure,” Constant said.

One of the couple’s goals for their adventure, the pizza truck, was to throw the world’s largest pizza party. The duo attempted this feat in August 2022.

“We had five other pizza trucks from all over Colorado,” Constant said. “We never heard back from Guinness (World Records), but in our eyes it was the biggest pizza party.”

Although the company had plenty of fun and made great memories, they still experience hardships other businesses in town don’t. Being a Black-owned business in a town with about an 80% white population, Project Pizza attempts to bring everyone together despite the intense discrimination they face on a daily basis.

The reality is that people can be very racist and hide it in unsuspecting ways as well as microaggressions, which makes for twice the amount of work on our end,” Ruffin said. “Another difficult part of being a Black business owner in this area is that we don’t have a network with other Black-owned businesses, specifically in the food industry.”

However, according to Constant, there have been positive impacts of being a Black-owned business in a predominately white community.

It has affected our business in ways that are positive and negative,” Constant said. “People will seek us out for pizza; we have other Black people in the area that will seek us out. It has helped us gain business but also helped us lose business.”

The business has been attempting to obtain a brick-and-mortar for over two years now yet has consistently faced challenges. The goal of a brick-and-mortar is to gain more clientele by having an in-person restaurant business where customers have a main location to visit.

We’ve had a very trying time trying to get a brick-and-mortar, but we find other businesses have no issue at all,” Constant said. “It’s been a challenge for sure, but (it) has been hopeful for other people of color in the area.”

The goal of the brick-and-mortar is to make Project Pizza fully a nonprofit.

“We’ve been told that we aren’t the right fit for a brick-and-mortar in a particular location,” Ruffin said. “At this point, we have tried at least four times to get a brick-and-mortar in the Fort Collins area.”

With all of this in mind, everything Ruffin and Constant do is worth it in the end.

“My favorite recurring memory is when customers come up to the truck and tell us our pizza is the best they’ve ever had,” Ruffin said.

UMaine searches for new Vice President of Enrollment Management

As the University of Maine searches for a new Vice President of Enrollment Management, three finalists have been chosen to give open-campus presentations to get a public vote on who is the best candidate for the job.

Dean of UMaine’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and chair of the search for a new VPEM Emily Haddad shared that the search has been going smoothly.

“We’re on schedule, and we have a great group of finalists,” Haddad said.

Out of privacy concerns and respect for the finalists, it has been requested that the candidates’ names not be shared.

All three candidates are giving open-campus presentations, where anyone is welcome to join and any UMaine affiliate with a maine.edu email is encouraged to give feedback on the finalists.

Two of the three finalists were welcomed by the Wells Conference Center this past week on Tuesday, Feb. 21 and Thursday, Feb. 23. The remaining candidate will be holding their presentation in the conference center on Monday, Feb. 27.

Each candidate will deliver a 45-minute presentation in which they detail past and present UMaine undergraduate and graduate enrollment trends. They also will share their thoughts on improving enrollment and retention for the UMaine System, especially UMaine and UMaine at Machias.

These open-campus presentations are a normal hiring procedure that were unfortunately halted due to the pandemic, Haddad explained.

The next VPEM has a tentative start date of July 1, 2023.

Dozens of community members and faculty have turned up to observe the candidates and ask questions. The meetings are also accessible via Zoom and there is a Google Form for feedback.

For more information, visit this webpage, complete with details about the search committee and more of what the position entails. Copies of the candidate’s CVs are also available to anyone with a maine.edu email address.

In recent years turbulent times around the world have hit close to home for many of us and made us rethink many aspects of our daily lives – including our careers.

Living through the pandemic, the cost-of-living crisis, and an impending economic downturn led to a newly forming economic landscape. Along with the push for better working conditions that spurred the Great Resignation, many people are also looking for more job security.

Recession-proof careers promise consistent work and reliable income, even in uncertain economic conditions. But they don’t have to mean a dull career. In fact, far from it, many ‘reliable’ jobs come with opportunities for continuous learning, career growth, and global travel.

Teaching happens to be one of the best recession-proof jobs for 2023.

Becoming a certified TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teacher opens up your career to endless job opportunities, as the global need for English-speaking teachers continues to rise.

“Students are facing financial difficulty more than ever before. Teaching English [abroad or online] is a great way to secure a steady income while doing very fulfilling work,” says Rene Frey, president of Teach Away.

TEFL grads go on to teach all around the world, from Japan and South Korea to the UAE, Spain, and beyond. A TEFL scholarship will provide the financial assistance needed to help one lucky recipient pursue their dream of living and teaching abroad.

A TEFL Certificate issued by OISE at the University of Toronto is globally recognized and increases aspiring teachers’ chances of securing their dream teaching job abroad. BCC Hosts the 4th Annual Black Faculty and Staff Awards

On Saturday evening, the University of Utah’s Black Cultural Center hosted the fourth annual Black Faculty and Staff Awards at Cleone Peterson Eccles Alumni house.

Meligha Garfield, director of the BCC, started this event with why it was first created, “with the goal to bring awareness to Black faculty and staff at the University of Utah, where their teachings, research, support and innovations will not go unnoticed.”

Seven awards were given out to fifteen faculty and staff, six of the awards were shared between two co-recipients. The awards were named after famous Black figures such as Malcolm X, Maya Angelou and James McCune Smith.

Garfield said a labor acknowledgment is owed to African Americans and all who paved the way.

“Much of what we know of this country today, including its culture, economic growth, and development through history and across time has been made possible by enslaved Africans and their descendants,” he said.

Garfield added that these trailblazers are remembered for the changes they made but the lingering effects from generations of corruption still lead to problems today.

Garfield shared 6% of higher education professionals and staff are Black, which is disproportionate to the 14% of Black undergraduates, adding that there continues to be a decline each year of Black faculty and staff at predominantly white institutions.

President Taylor Randall said he couldn’t attend the awards in person because he was on the hill all afternoon talking with Utah lawmakers about bill proposals, but he joined virtually.

“We need to do better, to be better for our students and increase their chances for success,” Randall said of the statistic.

After the introductions, history and purpose was laid out by Garfield, Mary Ann Villarreal, vice president of the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the U shared the importance Black faculty have on the university and students.

“In our Utah community, we see African Americans, Pacific Islanders, Asian Americans and so many more not reflected in our university faculty,” she said. “We need to do more to better reflect the diverse community we see in Utah.”

As the awards rolled out, many of the recipients echoed the importance of celebrating “Black excellence” as well as education and providing education to everyone.

“Education is the one thing no one can take away from you,” said Ronald G. Coleman, emeritus associate professor of history and ethnic studies at the U, as he presented his own Ronald G Coleman Black Alumni Award to James Jackson III.

Joy Pierce, associate professor of writing and rhetoric studies, said Utah is a unique place to be a Black faculty member in the higher education community because of the lack of Black faculty on campus. She added the award ceremony reminds her that the community still needs to make lots of changes.

“Sometimes I’m tired, but if we all leave, who else is going to do it?” Pierce said after accepting the James McCune Smith Award of Veneration.

The message of love, remembrance, and community was paralleled by Bethany Hardwig from the Office of Alumni Relations when she accepted the Madam C.J. Walker Resource Award.

She was nearly brought to tears as she reflected on her time at the U which started in April 2020.

“It’s not a great time to start a new job,” she said.  But she added that she feels supported at the college and pointed to the community in the room, saying they are the family who raised her up and reminded her of her purpose.

Garfield concluded the award ceremony with a call to action, a reminder that the fight goes beyond black history month. Pictures, laughs and dancing followed.

“We have about three days left in Black history month, and I want to say, every year this month is a lot, I just want to say thank you to those who put time, planning, and management into this month,” Garfield said. “I encourage you to continue that effort beyond February.”

Award Recipients:

  • Madam C.J. Walker Resource Award recipients: Bethany Hardwig and Keke Fairfax
  • Malcolm X Award of Social Justice recipients: Rachel Alicia Griffin and Bryan Hubain
  • Maya Angelou Award of Innovation recipients: Tashelle Wright and Sumiko Anderson
  • James McCune Smith Award of Veneration recipients: Manny Hendrix and Joy Pierce

Do Apks Work On Ios? Exploring The Possibilities Of Running Android Apps On Ios Devices

Android and iOS are the two main players in the mobile operating system world, and it’s no surprise that users of one system often wish they could use the apps from the other. But can you run Android apps on an iOS device? It turns out, the answer is yes! APKs, or Android application packages, can be used to install Android apps on iOS devices. This opens up the possibility of running Android apps on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. This article will explore the possibilities of running APKs on iOS devices, the benefits, and the potential risks. We will also look at some of the best APKs available and how to install them. So, if you’ve ever wanted to try out the Android apps that aren’t available on the App Store, keep reading to find out more.

Do Apks Work On Ios?

No, APKs do not work on iOS devices. APK stands for Android Package Kit, which is a file format used to install and distribute software in the Android operating system. As iOS is a completely different operating system from Android, APKs are not compatible with it.

What Are Apks And What Can They Do?

  1. APKs are Android application packages. This is a file format that Android uses to store app files and other related data.
  2. APKs can be used to install Android apps on iOS devices. This means that you can run Android apps on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  3. APKs have several benefits over traditional methods of installing apps on iOS devices. These include the fact that APKs are easy to transfer between devices, and that they don’t require jailbreaking or rooting your device.
  4. There are some potential risks associated with using APKs to install Android apps on iOS devices. These include the fact that some Android apps may not work correctly on iOS devices, and that installing APKs may damage your device’s software or data storage.
  5. Despite these risks, APKs are a viable way to install Android apps on iOS devices. If you’re interested in exploring this option, be sure to read our article on the best APKs for iOS devices. In it, we’ll outline some of the best APKs available and recommend specific ones for use on iOS devices.

What Are The Benefits Of Running Apks On Ios Devices?

  1. APKs offer a way to run Android apps on iOS devices that are not compatible with Apple’s App Store. This means that you can access apps that are not available through the App Store, and you don’t have to worry about compatibility issues.
  2. APKs are easy to install. All you need is a computer and an Android device, and you can install APKs without having to jailbreak your device or root it.
  3. APKs offer a way to keep your Android apps organized and easy to access. You can keep all of your Android apps in one place, and you can access them from any device that has an internet connection.
  4. APKs offer a way to bypass Apple’s app restrictions. By installing APKs, you can avoid the restrictions that Apple puts on the App Store, which means that you can download apps that are not approved for use on the App Store.
  5. APKs offers a way to access older versions of Android apps. If you no longer have access to your original Android device, you can still access your apps through APKs.
  6. APKs offer a way to keep your data safe. By installing APKs, you can keep your data safe and secure, and you don’t have to worry about losing any data if you lose your Android device.
  7. APKs offer a way to keep your device running smoothly. By installing APKs, you can keep your device running smoothly and optimize the performance of your device.

What Are The Risks Of Running Apks On Ios Devices?

  1. Security risks: Running APKs on iOS devices opens up the possibility of security risks. If you download an APK that is not from a trusted source, you may be opening yourself up to malware or other malicious software.
  2. Data loss: If you lose your iOS device, or if it is stolen, running APKs on it could lead to data loss. If you install an app from an illegitimate source, there is a risk that the app will contain malicious code that could damage your device or steal your data.
  3. Uninstalling apps: If you decide to uninstall an app from your iOS device, you may not be able to do so if the app was installed using an APK. In some cases, uninstalling an app using standard Apple procedures may remove the APK as well, leaving the app unusable.
  4. App compatibility: Some apps are not compatible with iOS devices and may not work properly when run on them.
  5. Performance issues: Running APKs on iOS devices can lead to performance issues. If the app is large or heavy, it may not work properly when run on an iPhone or iPad.

What Are The Best Apks Available And How To Install Them?

  1. APK Mirror: APK Mirror is a great option if you want to install a specific Android app on multiple iOS devices. This app allows you to search for and install apps from Google Play. You can also save APKs to your device for later use.
  2. AppSync: AppSync is a great option if you want to use an existing Android app on your iOS device. This app allows you to sync your apps between your iOS device and your computer. This means that you can access your apps offline, and you can also back up and restore your apps using AppSync.
  3. iFile: If you want to install an Android app on multiple iOS devices without using any third-party apps, iFile is the best option. This app allows you to browse and install APKs from any location on your computer, including the cloud. You can also use iFile to back up and restore your apps.
  4. APK Downloader: APK Downloader is a great option if you just want to download an Android app. This app allows you to search for and download apps from the Google Play store. You can also use APK Downloader to install APKs on your iOS device.
  5. AppCake: AppCake is a great option if you want to create and manage your custom Android apps for your iOS devices. This app allows you to create, test, and deploy your Android apps using the Apple Developer Program.

What Are The Potential Issues With Running Apks On Ios Devices?

  1. There are a few potential issues that you should be aware of when running APKs on iOS devices. The first is that not all Android apps will work on iOS devices. Some apps may not function correctly or at all, and others may require certain modifications to work properly. Additionally, some features (like in-app purchases) may not work on iOS devices.
  2. Another potential issue is security. Android apps are often designed to run on multiple devices with different versions of the Android operating system installed, and this can lead to security vulnerabilities. If you install an APK on an iOS device without first verifying its authenticity, you could end up downloading a malicious app that will damage your device or steal your data.
  3. Finally, there’s the issue of battery life. Running APKs on an iPhone or iPad can drain the battery quickly, and this can be problematic if you need your device to last for an extended period (like during a commute).

How To Ensure The Safety And Security Of Running Apks On Ios Devices?

  1. Always use a trusted APK installer. There are several malicious and untrustworthy APK installers available on the internet, and it’s important to use a reputable one to avoid any unwanted consequences.
  2. Always back up your data before installing an APK. If something goes wrong while installing an APK, you’ll want to be able to restore your data if necessary.
  3. Only install apps from trusted sources. Make sure that the source of the APK you’re downloading is reputable and has been verified by the app store or Google Play.
  4. Be aware of potential security risks when running APKs on iOS devices. Always make sure that your device is secure before installing an APK, and be aware of potential security risks such as malware and spyware infections.

Conclusion

Running Android apps on your iOS device is possible, but it comes with some risks and issues. One of the most popular ways to do this is by running APKs on iOS devices. These files are used to install Android apps on iOS devices, but some APKs may be malicious or harmful. To ensure the safety and security of running APKs on iOS devices, you should only download official APKs. You can also make sure your device is updated with the latest iOS version and has no issues with running APKs.

UH women’s basketball cruises past Tulsa

The UH women’s basketball team cruised past Tulsa 60-37 on Saturday at Fertitta Center. | Raphael Fernandez/The Cougar

The UH women’s basketball team bounced back into the win column with a dominant 60-37 victory against Tulsa at Fertitta Center on Saturday.

UH struggled in the opening minutes of the first period, conceding an 8-0 from the opening tip-off.

Propelled by an improved defensive effort, UH managed to halt Tulsa’s run and pull the game to an 11-10 deficit by the end of the first quarter.

In a period even more defensive-minded than the first, UH only scored eight points all quarter, still managing to outscore Tulsa, who only managed five points in the period as the Cougars led by a slim 18-16 margin at halftime.

The Cougars were led by graduate student forward Tatyana Hill, who scored seven points and pulled down 12 rebounds in the first half alone. Senior guard Tiara Young followed with six points.

In the first half, UH shot just 22 percent from the field, including going 0-for-6 on three-pointers.

UH’s shooting performance had a sharp turnaround entering the second half. Within the third period’s first three minutes, UH had build a 30-20 lead over Tulsa and had already hit two three-pointers in the quarter.

Senior forward Bria Patterson and junior guard Laila Blair led the Cougars en route to a 13-point lead at the end of the third quarter. Patterson and Blair each tallied six points in the period, as did redshirt senior guard Britney Onyeje.

Any questions about a potential second-straight fourth quarter collapse were silenced quickly, as UH had expanded its lead to as high as 22 points in the game’s final quarter to solidify its bounce-back win.

UH finished with a 60-37 victory, led by Blair with 13 points and Hill and Young with 12 points each respectively.

After their struggling first half shooting clip, UH turned up the heat in the second half, shooting 50 percent from the field and 44 percent from behind the arc en route to the victory.

This week in ASCSU: New Era Colorado, constitutional amendments

The Associated Students of Colorado State University convened online due to inclement weather Feb. 22 for the 20th session of the 52nd senate.

After a new senator was sworn into office by Chief Justice Marcus Zacarias, senate viewed a presentation from New Era Colorado, the Cobalt Abortion Fund and the Raíz Planned Parenthood Action Fund, which educated senate on their ongoing efforts to lobby the Colorado legislature concerning local, state and national issues including housing prices, eviction guidelines and access to reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare, among other pressing issues facing young voters.

The presentation was led by guest speakers Kate Kelly, Kathia Garcia and Emily Jaggers, who also explored the “power of storytelling,” which will ideally allow for increased education and open dialogue on social justice issues.

The presentation then detailed the benefits of writing letters to the editor, which grant an opportunity for individuals to advocate for a cause or take a personal stance on an issue through news publications.

Executive reports followed, with Vice President Elijah Sandoval updating senate on current Student Fee Review Board processes and the ongoing search for additional members.

During judicial reports, Zacarias issued the Supreme Court’s ruling on Case #5202, determining by a 6-0 vote that the Legislative Cabinet wrongfully terminated a member of the cabinet by not abiding by the ASCSU bylaws, which mandate the termination of a cabinet member must be decided through the passing of an official piece of legislation.

Speaker of the Senate Nick DeSalvo issued a brief statement in response to the court’s ruling.

“I want to express, on behalf of myself and the rest of Legislative Cabinet, how sorry we are that the process wasn’t followed correctly and that individuals were hurt as a result of that process not being followed,” DeSalvo said. “This was uncharted territory for everyone within Legislative Cabinet, and we didn’t really have any idea of how to proceed with such a process.”

The ratification of two new members of SFRB then took place.

“I understand what it feels like to be part of a group that is underrepresented and faced with certain issues in society. I think I’m going to try and bring that to SFRB by making sure that every voice feels heard.” – Ben Stickland, CSU student

SFRB is primarily responsible for overseeing the determination and distribution of CSU student fees, reviewing legislation relating to student fee allocation and providing funding for student organizations, events and initiatives across campus.

Senior Ben Stickland and sophomore Ashton Barbone were nominated for the positions.

“I understand what it feels like to be part of a group that is underrepresented and faced with certain issues in society,” Stickland said. “I think I’m going to try and bring that to SFRB by making sure that every voice feels heard.”

The candidates were approved with unanimous consent.

Senate then discussed Lex 5205, “Amending a Gap in the Constitution.”

The lex aims to make small edits to the ASCSU constitution in an effort to maintain transparency and specificity during the senate ratification process.

The legislative authors hope these edits will reduce confusion and simplify the process of the ratification of elected officials after instances of procedural error prohibited the confirmation of elected officials in past senates.

The lex passed with unanimous consent.

Lex 5206, “Constitution Caucus Constitutional Amendments,” was also considered.

The legislation seeks to update the ASCSU constitution to reflect the amendments discussed and passed by the constitution caucus, which include minor edits to senate membership requirements and the process of approving future amendments and pieces of legislation.

The lex passed with unanimous consent but will need to be considered again in a later session after further committee review.

ASCSU Senate will resume Mar. 1.
