Barney: The Left and The Right are Not Two Sides of the Same Coin

The range of political ideology in the United States is partially constrained to a left versus right dogma. We’ve seen this play out year after year, election cycle after election cycle, where we always have to hand political power over to another Democrat or Republican.

This is all types of problematic, but it’s how American politics operate.

In Tennessee on April 6, three Democratic lawmakers faced expulsion from their legislature due to their participation in a peaceful protest. Meanwhile, Republican politicians received next to no punishment for much worse acts.

Aside from the blatant erosion of democratic institutions and the invitation of fascism, Tennessee shows the reality of politics in the states. Politics on the left versus the right get treated unevenly. Pretending that the two are two sides of the same coin is an unacceptable and soft position — which welcomes failure and violence into our communities and politics.

Gun reform activists held a simple protest in Tennessee. A bunch of children and their parents protested at a state capitol on a normal day. They did not force themselves in, nor did they instigate any violence. Yet, the right-wing politicians in charge of the Tennessee legislature felt that the political dissent amounted to an insurrection led by representatives Gloria Johnson, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson. They thought the act so egregious it warranted the expulsion of the two Black lawmakers.

This is a clear double standard. On Jan. 6, 2021, Donald Trump and right-wing fascists attempted insurrection at the U.S. capitol. This wasn’t some conspiracy peddled by ANTIFA or the left, but an attempt to undermine our democratic institutions using a violent mob during a joint session of Congress. The insurrection received little punishment for those in power who helped perpetuate the act.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar got ousted from her position on the foreign affairs committee in February because the right-wing deemed her outspoken support of Palestine antisemitic. Democratic lawmakers quickly pointed out their hypocrisy — since the Republican party allows Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to sit on the committee while she spews anti-Jewish rhetoric and maintains relationships with known white supremacists.

The media is also guilty of this double standard. Democratic presidential candidate Marianne Williamson makes this obvious. Her support of sensible gun legislation, universal health care, free or reduced cost post-secondary education and other standing points are oftentimes dwarfed by a gross and fictitious misrepresentation of her ideals. CNN and other outlets peddle her position as radical, despite her saying nothing extraordinary.

Even in Utah, Republican lawmakers call the left crazy and corrupt, only to turn around and ban healthcare and defend corruption from the right. Politicians spout critiques of cancel culture while they simultaneously try to make it easier for them to shut down dissent.

A clear double standard exists between the left and the right in this country. We can’t pretend the issue doesn’t exist. The examples don’t exist in a vacuum, we need to pay attention to policy.

The left advocates for food as a human right, education even if you’re poor and treating trans people as people. The right advocates for the eradication of “transgenderism” from public life, banning books and failing to concede elections.

Many people like to stay out of politics out of frustration because everyone is “just as bad” as everyone else. That’s far from the truth — it’s important that people learn just how much damage they’re doing by clinging to ideologies because of stubbornness, short-sightedness or some kind of allegiance. It’s not fair to place the left and the right on the same playing field, because they’re not two sides of the same coin.

The consequences of ignoring this reality cause a consistent shift toward actual radicalization. As we continue to compromise with the ideology of right-wing radicals, we allow reality to slip from public policy. Media outlets such as CNN or MSNBC getting equated with the radical left is a false narrative. Indulging this idea means constraining acceptable politics to the right.

There isn’t an easy solution. The left has come to expect low standards from the right. When a Republican says “all lives matter in response to the basic acknowledgement of Black lives, we already expect it. It’s as if our minds are numb to the grim reality that justice isn’t real.

The way I’ve described the situation makes it sound hopeless, but it isn’t. We simply can’t allow ourselves to fall complacent to the double standard. We need to call it out.

As of now, Gov. Spencer Cox and other Utah Republicans have failed to condemn the fascistic actions of the Tennessee legislature. As leaders, it’s their duty to stand up to injustice, even if it isn’t in their own backyard. More than likely, they won’t. They benefit from the system, so they have no incentive, but it doesn’t change the fact that they should.

It can’t just be the left that calls out the double standard. American politics isn’t a binary, despite what we’ve been conditioned to believe. The issue is, calling out one side means choosing sides. Staying a centrist and pretending that we live in a horseshoe chooses a side as well. As the saying goes: silence is violence.

Pretending like the American left and right are the same is an untenable position. Election season is coming up and if we really want change, we need to concede these facts — continuously yielding to the radicality of Republicans and pretending that their position is valid will only lead to fascism.

Former Brooklyn Center officer Kim Potter to be released

Former Brooklyn Center Police Department officer Kim Potter is set to be released from prison on Monday, two years after killing Daunte Wright.

Wright, a 20-year-old unarmed Black man, died after Potter claimed to confuse her gun for her taser and fatally shot him during a traffic stop on April 11, 2021. Potter resigned two days after she killed Wright and was convicted of first and second-degree manslaughter in December 2021.

Potter, who had no previous criminal history, was sentenced to two years in prison in February 2022, only 16 months of which were to be served in prison. The remainder would be served under supervised release.

The sentence was below typical guidelines for someone without a criminal history, which is at least six years in prison for first-degree manslaughter and 3.5 years for second-degree manslaughter.

While the exact time of Potter’s release is uncertain, she is expected to be released from Minnesota Correctional Facility – Shakopee under standard release procedures, according to Minnesota Department of Corrections spokesperson Andy Skoogman. Potter’s release time will not be released due to “security reasons.”

“Our criminal investigative analysts are working closely with law enforcement to monitor the situation to ensure Kim Potter, like all incarcerated persons, is safe as she leaves our facility,” Skoogman wrote in an email to the Minnesota Daily. “We will quickly adjust and alter our release procedures if we obtain information that indicates there is a credible threat to Kimberly Potter’s safety or the safety of others.”

Wright’s murder came during Derek Chauvin’s trial for killing George Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020, and sparked further protests from activists for several nights to mourn Wright and call for police reform.

“Her incarceration was just a moment in time,” Katie Wright, Daunte’s mother, said, according to reporting from the Star Tribune. “She’s cursed us with a forever life sentence.”

The Bookbinder: Rewriting The History of a Community

“We never expected to be bookbinders. Did you expect to be a journalist?”

On Monticello Avenue, just across from the zoo and only a few minutes away from the ODU campus, sits a white-bricked square storefront with a bright and welcoming sign that reads “Roullet Bookbinders, inc.” When you pass the front entrance, you’re greeted with glued puzzles dotting the walls and hanging from the ceiling, rows of old-ish books for sale, repurposed church pews in the back corner, and a table of free bibles above a display case of finely re-bound tomes.

Going further in and taking a right brings you to the workshop, where hundreds of coverless books are sorted by order number and spread out across many thousands of dollars worth of machinery. Turning back towards the entrance and veering to the left, you’ll find the owner’s office. It’s adorned with two opposite-facing desks, one-too-many filing cabinets, and two framed “Thank You” letters from former Presidents Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter hanging from a front-facing wall.

When first opened in 1975, the bindery was known as “Long’s Bookbinders and Religious Supply” after its founder, William H. Long Jr.. Long originally moved to Norfolk in 1941, only to be drafted into the Navy to fight on the Pacific Front. Well-known and appreciated in the Norfolk community, Long ran in 1979 for the Virginia House of Delegates as a Republican and acted for many years as the President of the Christian Booksellers Association (now the Christian Trade Association).

Due to their shared connections with local librarian and religious circles, Long and his associate Alain Roullet were able to conceive and build a bindery that would last decades, even exceeding its founder’s life. William H. Long Jr. died at the age of 91 in 2012 but sold his shares of the bindery to Roullet, who now runs the shop with his wife, Eileen.

Born in 1945 in Paris, Roullet spent his childhood in France, and at fifteen years old, embarked on a five-year sightseeing journey around the world. Following his trip, he was drafted into the French Navy for multiple years. After retiring, he successfully immigrated to the United States in 1967. He was not granted full US citizenship until about 1980.

After being fired from his second job at a restaurant for eating customers’ shrimp, Roullet was able to find a job as a document sorter on the lower floors of the United Nations in New York City. His future wife, Eileen, worked thirty floors above him “for several foreign attaches,” and the two met for the first time in the building’s lobby. After marrying in late 1968, they shifted between the east and west coasts before finally settling on Norfolk.

A photo of William H. Long, the bindery’s founder, hangs on Roullet’s wall. (Elena Harris)

Roullet wasn’t sure why they moved to Virginia in the first place. “Maybe [it was] an act of God if you believe in that, but you cannot ever ask why,” he said. “Life moves on, wherever you are, you deal with that. There’s too many ‘whys,’ so that’s just it. It is what it is. America has the good, the bad, and the ugly, but I am fortunate to have always been with the good.”

For nearly fifty years, Roullet has bound manuscripts, bibles, and more for American presidents, universities, government organizations, and individuals — but times change.

The COVID-19 pandemic slowly bled the workshop dry of its employees, eventually leading to Alain and his wife, Eileen, becoming the only two staffed binders. “At our highest, we had [between] twelve [and] fourteen employees — some were seventeen year, some were twenty-one year. [My employees] were okay, though. It’s not like it happened in one night and ‘boom,’ you close. We saw it coming, and we had time.”

At its height, the shop “probably bound about a thousand books a week,” Roullet stated. “That was good, but our competitors were doing fifteen-thousand, so we were not at the same level.  Right now, we can only get to maybe fifty, seventy-five books. It’s just me and my wife, you know.”

Roullet, at age 78, has never been concerned with technology. He continues to use a flip-phone and a very early brick of a Dell computer. “I don’t need a smartphone. Except for my son, nobody calls me,” he said laughing. “‘Pa, how are you doing?’ he says. ‘I’m fine,’ I say. ‘Good,’ he says, and then I get back to work.”

Roullet has worked in the bookbinding business for nearly fifty years. This van is mostly no longer in use for business purposes. (Elena Harris)

Eileen, who acts as Vice President of the business, is the store’s only bookkeeper through a smartphone and desktop combination. Her financial documents seemed to be both written and typed, and extremely meticulous. “We both do things that the other cannot,” Roullet said. “The business would not work without her, or without me.”

Most of the revenue generated through binderies comes from annual streams of college textbooks that need to be bound or re-bound. However, many colleges are no longer looking towards printed materials, with many opting to keep some textbooks entirely online. Despite having worked with colleges in smaller numbers, the Norfolk area provides unique opportunities to bind for NATO, the US Air Force, and the US Navy.

Looking around the workshop, it’s easy to notice more than just naval textbooks– although there are many. There’s also a seemingly endless number of family heirloom books that “might not be worth very much, but hold enough sentimental value to want it re-bound.” These heirlooms range from children’s books to two-hundred-year-old bibles, indicating a level of trust that the bindery has built with clientele over the years. However, Roullet has almost always placed his own trust in the spiritual.

The bindery has always had a faith-based connection, having sold religious supplies during its early years in the neighboring Long’s Religious Supply. Although the Supply is now a permanently-closed, empty storefront, the bindery still holds a few of its residuals.

Many of Roullet’s machines were purchased for many thousands of dollars. With modern automation, these machines are obsolete and cheap. (Elena Harris)

Roullet is a member of “The Gideons International,” which is the organization largely responsible for the pocket bibles found in hotel desk cabinets. He exercises his membership with free and multi-lingual pocket bibles at the front entrance.

Although religion was not so much a part of his youth, it has become a mainstay of his adult life. “When you start to have things you [can’t explain,] look for God. Look deep down in your heart, because that’s where your soul is. Start to figure out what’s going on —  what you are, what you want to be, what you want to do.”

Roullet plans to drop the deed to the shop and the parking lot surrounding it before he dies, but does not plan to retire. “Eventually it’s gonna come — no man in my family [has] passed 80 years old, and I am seventy-eight. I just don’t want to do nothing. Work keeps my mind busy.”

Alain and Eileen Roullet built a life here in Norfolk with children, grandchildren, and a bookbindery that has served a community across generations.

Long’s-Roullet Bookbinders is open six days a week, and closed on Sundays.

Snoopy is Gen Z’s ‘blood type’

Since the beginning of April, the American Red Cross has been partnering with the Peanuts brand to convince more people to donate blood.

Donors have the chance to receive a free t-shirt featuring Snoopy leaning against the Red Cross logo when they donate blood, platelets or plasma. The Snoopy campaign ends on April 23. According to the Red Cross, the shirts were created as a part of a promotional deal to encourage blood donation.

The campaign has taken off within Gen Z; getting your blood drawn and then showcasing your “Snoopy Merch” has become a viral TikTok trend, and it has worked. According to the University of Minnesota Red Cross Club (UMNRCC), more students than normal have been donating blood during April.

Student group fuels education and donation rates on campus

UMNRCC is a direct affiliate with the nationally recognized American Red Cross and aims to host monthly blood drives on or near campus, UMNRCC said in an email to the Minnesota Daily.

The Club said they typically have to extend offers of recruitment through various social media platforms to obtain more donors, however, they said April has been different since the Snoopy shirts rolled out.

“Our blood drives normally consist of 22% first-time donors and our April drive currently has 60% first-time donors scheduled to donate,” UMNRCC co-president Zoe DeZeeuw said.

DeZeeuw said with the increased donors at drives this April, the donor slots filled up two weeks prior to the April 14 drive with minimal outside promotional inquiries.

“As far as future merchandise goes, the Red Cross already offers great incentives such as $10 Amazon gift cards and other t-shirts, but I hope we will see more fun collabs and Snoopy gear in the future,” DeZeeuw said.

Amy Riha, co-president of the UMNRCC, said the club typically utilizes word-of-mouth and social media to advertise upcoming drives, but to increase campus outreach they can also be seen in Moos Tower at tables displaying flyers. The club has also used gift cards for Raising Cane’s lemonade and Insomnia Cookies in the past to draw in more donors, she said.

“We are always looking for new incentives from local businesses to help draw in donors for our drives,” Riha said. “Our club hosts blood drives on campus in hopes of making them more accessible to our student body.”

Maximizing patient blood management and the impact of merchandise

Professor and Director of the University’s Blood Bank Laboratory Claudia Cohn conducts research in the field of transfusion medicine as well as focuses on the concept of patient blood management.

Cohn said she recently had a patient who needed plasma, but her blood bank had to initially decline due to the lack of plasma readily available.

“Within a year, we went from less than 80% of proper infusions to over 95% appropriate transfusions,” Cohn said. “We also decreased red cell use by 15% and platelet use by 25%.”

Cohn said she and the entire blood transfusion industry is particularly worried younger people are not donating enough as older people because the majority of donations have been coming from baby boomers.

Cohn said if higher donation rates are being observed through creating new merchandise, then we need to “run with it.”

“It’s a tremendously important puzzle why more people won’t donate,” Cohn said. “Only 3% of people who are eligible to donate do so, and that is just not tenable.”

CSU Theatre presents ‘Machinal’ debut

The Colorado State University School of Music, Theatre and Dance is putting on “Machinal,” a play by Sophie Treadwell, April 21-23 and 27-30 at the University Center for the Arts.

Sophie Treadwell’s “Machinal” is a fascinating and thought-provoking exploration of the themes of gender, society and power.

“I remember reading ‘Machinal’ in college and loving it,” said Director Debbie Swann, senior instructor of theatre and interdisciplinary liberal arts. “Directing it has been on my bucket list for a while. This play is a beast and so difficult but incredibly rewarding as it is all coming together.”

CSU Theatre’s mission statement aims to create art that speaks truth to power and teaches audiences through creative, collaborative storytelling, much like “Machinal” did in 1928 when it was first written.

“I hope audiences are taken aback at how themes presented 100 years ago still resonate today. Most importantly, I hope they are inspired to do something about it.” -Debbie Swann, director of “Machinal” and senior instructor of theatre and interdisciplinary liberal arts

The story follows the protagonist, Helen, who feels trapped by the expectations placed on her as a wife, mother and worker. At her wits’ end with the pressure society is putting on her, Helen plots to murder her husband.

“Machinal” is based on the true story of Ruth Snyder, the first woman to be executed via electric chair in the state of New York.

“When it happened, the media swooped in and made it a macabre sensation,” Swann said. “Our news media still does this 100 years later. Sophie Treadwell, on the other hand, wrote this play (inspired by Snyder) as a way to explore why a woman would have committed a heinous murder in a ‘progressive society.’ The play in no way condones Snyder’s actions, but it does attempt to understand why a woman would be driven to such extremes.”

This expressionistic piece dives into what it feels like to be a woman in a patriarchal society that demands she play along with rules and norms she had no hand in writing.

In addition to its themes, “Machinal” is also notable for its innovative use of expressionistic techniques. The play is divided into nine episodes, each one exploring a different aspect of Helen’s life. The use of episodic structure along with repetition mirrors the monotony and rigidity of Helen’s life.

Additionally, the play features a chorus of characters who comment on the action and offer a broader perspective on the themes of the play. These techniques not only serve to enhance the play’s topics but also make for a powerful and engaging theatrical experience.

“It is one of the most ambitious shows in our season, requiring students to dive into an avant-garde style from performance to design,” Swann said.

Through its exploration of gender, power and society with innovative theatrical techniques, the production is sure to bring Treadwell’s powerful play to life in a way that is both engaging and meaningful.

“I hope this play sparks conversation, whether it be about the innovative style and modes of storytelling or the political and cultural themes presented,” Swan said. “I hope audiences are taken aback at how themes presented 100 years ago still resonate today. Most importantly, I hope they are inspired to do something about it.”

Overall, this production of “Machinal” by CSU Theatre seems to be an impressive piece of theater you won’t want to miss.

“Machinal” opens April 21 and continues until April 30. There will also be a livestream of the show Saturday, April 29. Get your tickets now on the CSU Theatre website

Utah Golf Finds Individual Success, but Team Struggles at The Thunderbird

After three straight competitions on the West Coast, the Utah men’s golf team traveled to Arizona this past weekend, April 14-15, to compete in the Thunderbird Collegiate golf tournament hosted by Arizona State.

The 2023 Thunderbird was a two-day tournament in Phoenix that took place at Papago Golf Course. As a collegiate tournament, the Thunderbird has a lengthy history; Past medal winners include the likes of PGA professionals such as Phil Mickelson and even the 2023 Masters winner, Jon Rahm.

Playing against a loaded field of teams and players, the Utes sought to put together a strong finish in their final match before conference championships.

Day One

On the first day of the competition (Friday, April 14), two out of the weekend’s three rounds were held. The Utes’ best golf of the day came from Hunter Howe, who played some of his finest rounds ever as a Ute. Howe shot 2-under in both of his first two rounds, ending the day 4-under par and tied for 12th place overall.

Howe’s first round of day one was a wild ride. The junior from Ogden, Utah, began his day on the 10th hole with a bogey. After this initial blunder, Howe then rattled off two birdies and an eagle through the next 10 holes, to put himself 3-under par. A double-bogey on hole three slowed down his momentum for a short period, but Howe’s last four holes of the first round was his most interesting stretch. In the final four holes, he shot a bogey, birdie, bogey, and finally eagle, to close out the round with a score of 69, 2-under par.

Howe then replicated his round-one score of 69 with another in round two. However, this round was far less tumultuous, including no eagles or double bogeys.

Javier Barcos had the Utes’ second-lowest score through two rounds, with a final day one tally of 142 strokes, or even par.

Barcos began his day with a 1-under first round that included an impressive total of five birdies. A double bogey on his first hole of the day (10) was the junior from Spain’s biggest gaffe of the first round. In round two, Barcos had two birdies and three bogeys to finish 1-over par.

Go Nakatsukasa boasted the Utes’ third-best finish of the day. An initial 5-over round paired with a second round of 2-over placed Nakatsukasa tied for 69th with a total of 7-over. Braxton Watts finished the day tied for 74th, Brandon Robison himself in 78th. As a team, the Utes finished the first day 9-over par, placing them 11th in the team standings.

Day Two

Day two of the Thunderbird included the third and final round of the 54-hole tournament. Nakatsukasa had the Utes’ lowest round-three score with a total of 69 strokes.

Nakatsukasa continued a streak of improvement following his opening 5-over round. After a final round score of 2-under, the freshman from San Diego jumped 19 spots to crack a top-50 placement in the tournament.

As far as the Utes’ best individual finisher of the tournament, Howe managed an even par final round to end the tournament 4-under with a 54-hole total of 209 strokes. With a final score of 4-under, Howe maintained his 12th overall standing from the day before, finishing in the same spot at tournament’s end.

“I’m really excited about how Hunter played,” said head coach Garrett Clegg. “We have been waiting for him to play at this level and hopefully this is just the starting point for him. As a team, we have to be better!”

A key to Howe’s tournament success was his performance on par-five holes. Out of 80 athletes competing in the tournament, Howe placed third with an average score of 4.22 on par-five holes. Moreover, he scored a total of 7-under on par-fives throughout the weekend.

As a team, the Utes didn’t have a player shoot over 73 (2-over) in the final round.

Barcos finished his weekend with a 73 to finish the tournament tied for 41st overall. Watts and Robison followed suit, also scoring 73 in the final round, finishing the tournament 72nd (tied) and 77th respectively.

The Utah men’s golf team travels to Stanford, California, on April 28 to take part in the PAC-12 Men’s Golf Championship.

Reasons For A False Positive Result

There are some reasons why you might get a false positive result on a Clear Blue digital pregnancy test. These include:

  1. Chemical pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants in the uterus but doesn’t develop correctly. This can result in a positive pregnancy test, but the pregnancy will not progress.
  2. Some medications that contain hCG, such as fertility treatments, can cause a false positive result on a pregnancy test.
  3. Certain medical conditions that affect hCG levels, such as ovarian cysts or some types of cancer, can also cause a false positive result.
  4. Using an expired or faulty test can also lead to inaccurate results.
  5. If you don’t follow the instructions correctly, such as not using the first urine of the day or reading the results too early or too late, it can affect the accuracy of the test.
  6. In rare cases, a positive pregnancy test with a Clear Blue digital pregnancy test can indicate an ectopic pregnancy, where the fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus.
  7. If you have recently had a miscarriage, there may still be hCG in your system, which can cause a false positive result.
  8. Sometimes, an evaporation line can appear on a pregnancy test if it’s left out too long after taking it. This line can be mistaken for a positive result.

Steps To Take After A Positive Test Result

Step 1: Confirm the result

You can confirm the positive test result by taking another pregnancy test a few days after the first one. This will help you to be sure that you are indeed pregnant.

Step 2: Schedule a prenatal appointment

Once you’ve confirmed your pregnancy, it’s important to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider as soon as possible. They will be able to provide guidance on prenatal care and answer any questions you may have.

Step 3: Make healthy lifestyle changes

It’s important to make healthy lifestyle changes when you’re pregnant, such as eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, getting enough rest, and avoiding smoking and alcohol.

Step 4: Consider sharing the news

You may want to start telling family and friends about your pregnancy, but it’s important to remember that it’s a personal decision. Take time to think about who you want to share the news with and when.

Step 5: Plan for maternity leave

If you’re employed, it’s important to plan for maternity leave as early as possible. Talk to your employer or HR department about your options and make a plan for how you’ll manage your workload before and after your leave.
