The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society, today announced the recipients of a 2023 Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant. The $1,000 grants were awarded to 125 students across the nation.
The grants are designed to support undergraduates, both members and nonmembers from campuses that have Phi Kappa Phi chapters, as they seek expanded knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad.
“In today’s increasingly interconnected world, studying abroad provides students with an opportunity to expand their cross-cultural knowledge and competencies,” said Society Executive Director and CEO Dr. Bradley R. Newcomer. “We are pleased to support these students by helping them expand their horizons through our study abroad grant program.”
The selection process for a study abroad grant is based on the applicant’s academic achievement, campus and community service, relation of travel to academic preparation and career goals, a personal statement, letters of recommendation and acceptance into a study abroad program.
Established in 2001, the Study Abroad Grant Program is part of the Society’s robust portfolio of award and grant programs, which gives more than $1.3 million each year to outstanding students and members through graduate and dissertation fellowships, funding for post-baccalaureate development, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives.

By resisting commodification, gardening becomes an effective form of protest. And if gardening is a form of protest, guerilla gardening is even more so. Salt Lake City’s Og-woi People’s Orchard and Garden practices guerilla gardening — a form of gardening in which the gardeners do not have legal rights to cultivate the land.
Guerilla gardening and community gardens are valuable, providing access to food and helping the environment by reducing waste and air pollution. Plants absorb rainwater, diminishing the number of pollutants that run into rivers, lakes and streams. They can also instill a sense of belonging with one’s community. I felt this sense of belonging as I planted ornamental kale and pansies with volunteers at Og-woi on Earth Day. However, the city is attempting to remove the Og-woi.
Though people can’t legally garden just anywhere, Salt Lake City should recognize the role guerilla gardening plays here.
Guerilla gardeners often cultivate abandoned or otherwise unused public land. Gardening of this type commonly attempts to beautify these spaces. Guerilla gardens can also serve as community gathering places that feed the public while promoting environmental sustainability.
The Og-woi is a local example of this. Located near the Jordan River in West Salt Lake City, the original collective began the garden in 2020, planting six small trees on abandoned land. It has since grown, now including flowers, vegetables, murals and a community bulletin board. The entire project is maintained by volunteers who teach people to grow their own food, giving away thousands of seedlings for free every year.
Dee Platero, a volunteer at Og-woi, heard about the garden and realized they could plant a MMIW — Missing and Murdered Indigenous Woman and Girls — garden. The idea was to share produce with families who had lost a loved one in the MMIW epidemic. Platero explained the medicinal aspects of Og-woi plants such as sweetgrass, tobacco, sage and cedar for smudging, an Indigenous healing ritual.
I also spoke with Maile Arvin, the Director of the Pacific Island Studies program at the U and a volunteer for the Og-woi. She highlighted the importance of the garden for Pacific Islanders, in part because of the garden’s mural of Margarita Satini, late community leader and activist. “To have the mural is just so joyful and embodies a lot of the warmth that Margarita always brought to a space,” Arvin said.
The Og-woi Garden facilitates healing through guerilla gardening. “I think it’s interesting to see this kind of phenomenon happen where people feel more empowered to say, I don’t like how this land is,” Platero said. “Why did it take the community and an act of civil disobedience to improve it?”
Though garden volunteers have been communicating with the city, last year, the city stopped responding. The Og-woi received a letter in late March ordering garden volunteers to remove the garden infrastructure by May 1. But Mayor Erin Mendenhall told volunteers in a later email that she wants the space to be repaired, not closed or destroyed. Mendenhall’s concerns focused on contaminated soil at the site.
Arvin explained that this seems like a miscommunication between the garden and the city. Some volunteers built raised garden beds and brought in new soil to avoid any contamination. Many garden volunteers agree with the mayor’s concerns, but the city isn’t aware of actions the garden has taken. “And if the city has other kinds of requirements, they just haven’t been communicated very effectively,” Arvin said.
Guerrilla gardening also resists the notion that land is owned by government. Some defend the Og-woi as part of the Land Back movement, which works to return control over land to Indigenous people. A recurring theme in public comments for the Og-woi is that its land was stolen from Indigenous people. Therefore, this garden has every right to be there. In fact, “Og-woi” means river in the Shoshone language, as shown on signs at the garden.
Others believe the garden needs to go because it attracts homeless groups. But the Og-woi People’s Orchard and Garden serves the community and should benefit all its members, including unsheltered ones.
The forced eviction of the Og-woi mirrors the city’s procedure of tearing down camps where unsheltered people live. Fort Pioneer, where a few hundred people lived for months, was a successful encampment before officials demolished it. Meanwhile, the people living there protested and wept. Fort Pioneer’s unofficial mayor, Stacey Johnson, said that Mayor Mendenhall had lied to her about ensuring the camp’s protection.
It might be hard to trust Mendenhall’s claims after this. We can’t guarantee that she doesn’t intend to destroy the garden, so we must speak up in its defense.
Authorities must have more compassion and understanding. The city must also protect the Og-woi and better communicate with its volunteers. Community gardens, including those that began as guerilla gardens, help heal communities. The Og-woi land is getting cared for and beautified while benefiting as many people as it can reach.

UH Baseball concluded its regular season schedule with a 2-1 record in a three-game home series against Cincinnati.
However, with East Carolina University sweeping its final series of the season, Houston came up a half-game short of the American Athletic Conference regular season title.
Thursday’s series opener saw a high-scoring affair for both teams, with Cincinnati taking the series opener 12-7.
A solo home run from Cincinnati in the second inning proved to be the lone score for either squad for nearly the first half of the game, until the Bearcats scored two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to lead 3-0.
The Cougars responded in the bottom of the fifth, with a left-center double from junior utility player Justin Murray and a center-field single from sophomore outfielder Cameron Nickens bringing a total of three runs home for UH.
Despite tying the game in the fifth inning, the Cougars fell behind once again in the sixth – this time by a much higher margin, as the Bearcats would score six runs in the inning.
In the seventh inning, Cincinnati scored two more runs, bringing its lead to a commanding 11-3 scoreline. Another single from Nickens brought a single run home in the bottom of the seventh inning, and a single from junior utility player Alex Lopez would score two runs for UH.
In the eighth inning, UH attempted to salvage the evening, scoring two more runs on a single from Murray and a ground-out from Nickens, respectively, to pull the deficit to 11-7.
Despite UH’s best efforts, the comeback effort fell short; Cincinnati would score one more run in the ninth before it was all said and done.
Friday afternoon’s rematch went Houston’s way this time, with the Cougars taking home a ten-inning, 8-7 victory.
The scoring opened in the second inning; Cincinnati scored two runs on a right-field homer in the top of the inning, while UH scored a lone run on a homer from sophomore outfielder Malachi Lott.
The homer-ridden afternoon continued in the fourth inning for the Bearcats, as two center-field home runs in the inning followed by a right-side single scored three runs for the visitors in the inning.
In the fifth inning, a ground-out managed to bring sophomore infielder Brandon Burckel home for the Cougars.
With the score at 5-2 in favor of Cincinnati, the Bearcats scored two more times before UH could respond in the ninth inning with a series of runs that would level the game at 7-7 and demand extra innings.
UH’s five-run comeback was completed shortly thereafter, as a tenth-inning home run from junior catcher Dylan Post handed UH the slim 8-7 victory.
UH clinched the series with a 7-6 win on Saturday.
The Bearcats scored the game’s first run in the top of the fourth inning. But the Cougars swiftly responded in the bottom of the fourth, as a three-run home run courtesy of Lott would give the Cougars a 3-1 lead.
In the fifth inning, Cincinnati knocked out their own three-run homer, retaking the scoreline in their favor.
Cincinnati’s lead, though, proved brief once again, as a homer from Murray and two more scores for the Cougars put the Bearcats at a deficit once again.
In the following innings, Cincinnati ate away at Houston’s 6-4 lead, scoring once in the sixth inning and once in the top of the eighth to tie the game up entering the series’ final stretch.
The bottom of the eighth, though, saw UH solidify its lead, with a single from junior infielder Zach Arnold bringing freshman infielder Thomas Lyssy home for what proved to be the decisive score.
With Saturday’s 7-6 victory, UH finished the season without losing a conference series all season.
The Cougars will enter the AAC baseball tournament as a two-seed with action beginning on Tuesday.

Kami di sini ingin membagikan informasi tentang sosok Eeng Saptahadi, penyebab meninggalnya, serta aktor yang terlibat dalam kasus ini. Mari kita simak bersama-sama!
Eeng Saptahadi adalah seorang pemuda yang dikenal sebagai salah satu seniman muda berbakat di Indonesia. Ia dikenal luas atas karya-karyanya dalam dunia seni grafis dan desain. Namun sayangnya, pada tanggal 20 Februari lalu, dia meninggal dunia secara tiba-tiba.
Penyebab pasti dari meninggalnya Eeng Saptahadi masih menjadi misteri dan sedang ditelusuri oleh pihak kepolisian setempat. Beberapa spekulasi pun bermunculan tentang kemungkinan penyebab kematian Eeng Saptahadi.
Meskipun demikian, keluarga serta teman-temannya tetap merasa terpukul atas kepergian mendadak tersebut. Mereka mengenang sosok Eeng Saptahadi sebagai orang yang sangat bersemangat dan memiliki dedikasi tinggi untuk berkarya di bidang seni.
Kami semua turut berduka cita atas meninggalnya Eeng Saptahadi dan menyampaikan doa serta harapan semoga ia mendapatkan tempat yang layak di sisi Allah SWT. Semoga juga keluarga serta teman-temannya diberikan ketabahan dalam menghadapi cobaan ini. Eeng Saptahadi adalah sosok yang dikenal sebagai seorang pelawak dan aktor berkebangsaan Indonesia. Ia memiliki bakat komedi yang luar biasa dan menjadi salah satu pelawak terbaik di tanah air. Eeng Saptahadi mulai dikenal publik setelah ia membintangi beberapa judul sinetron, film, hingga acara televisi.
Tidak hanya sukses dalam dunia seni peran, Eeng juga sempat mencoba merambah ke bidang politik dengan mengajukan diri sebagai calon legislatif pada Pemilu 2019 lalu. Namun sayangnya, ia tidak berhasil memperoleh kursi di DPR. Kehadiran Eeng Saptahadi selalu dinanti oleh para penggemarnya melalui tayangan televisi maupun panggung stand up comedy. Ia sering kali mengundang tawa penonton dengan gayanya yang khas dan unik.
Namun sayangnya, kabar duka datang dari keluarga besar Eeng Saptahadi karena meninggal dunia pada tanggal 22 Agustus 2021 kemarin. Kepergiannya meninggalkan kesedihan mendalam bagi keluarga serta semua pihak yang mengenalinya baik secara personal maupun profesional.
Semoga perjalanan hidup dan karir seniman hebat ini dapat memberikan inspirasi bagi generasi muda untuk terus berkarya dan menunjukkan bakat terbaik mereka kepada masyarakat luas seperti halnya sang legenda humoris. Eeng Saptahadi, seorang pelawak yang dikenal luas di Indonesia meninggal dunia pada tanggal 4 Juli 2021 lalu. Kabar ini menjadi berita yang menggemparkan publik karena Eeng masih terbilang muda dan aktif dalam berbagai kegiatan seni hiburan.
Namun sayangnya, penyakit jantung diduga menjadi faktor utama dari kematian Eeng Saptahadi. Belum lama ini ia juga sempat menjalani operasi untuk hal tersebut. Selain itu, beberapa sumber menyebutkan bahwa Eeng juga memiliki riwayat diabetes sehingga kondisi kesehatannya semakin memburuk.

In June of 2021, I spent a week watching all the Fast & Furious movies back to back. The experience was something akin to a fever dream. It was constant noise and action filled with melodramatic speeches about the importance of family. I had never had so much fun watching so many terrible movies. Since then I have labeled myself as a “Fast & Furious Fan,” acknowledging the series as the popcorn schlock it is while also touting them as some of the most entertaining films you can experience. Even “F9,” the now infamous installment where the crew flies a car into space, was a hoot despite being one of the worst things I’ve seen projected on a big screen. Because of all this, I had to catch the newest installment “Fast X” as soon as I possibly could.
“Fast X” is the first installment in what star Vin Diesel says will be a three-part finale to the action franchise. In the film, Dominic Toretto and his family are split up when a mysterious enemy from their past emerges, set on destroying their peaceful existence. Each crew races against time to defend against the sinister foe before he makes a strike too damaging to fix.
Let’s get the obvious out of the way first, “Fast X” is a terrible movie. The cast is over-stuffed with big-name actors and the story is convoluted to the point of incomprehension. It’s hard not to feel like you’ve just stuffed your face at a fast food buffet when the credits finally roll. Its two hours and 20-minute runtime feels longer than the three-hour abstract dark comedy “Beau is Afraid,” despite having action sequences every ten minutes and refusing to ever use an unmoving shot.
The dialogue is unintelligible and feels like the cross between the writings of a seven-year-old and ChatGPT. Even the most mundane of lines are worthy of laughing out loud due to the actor’s straight-face delivery of them. I haven’t seen a film this bewildering since well, “F9″. That all being said, the Fast & Furious franchise is one of the few, if not the only series of films where being good isn’t a requirement for receiving a recommendation.
Looking at the returning cast, there’s not much new. Everyone is giving the same, stilted performances they’ve been giving for the last three installments. For Diesel, there are at least a few times where the script asks him to look scared which is an emotion I rarely see from the actor. The biggest and only performance worth commenting on comes from the new cast member Jason Momoa, who plays the franchise’s newest big baddie, Dante.
Momoa is essentially playing a modern, more-flamboyant version of the Joker who happens to be really into cars and artillery weapons. The character of Dante brings a refreshingly dark sense of humor to the series which can often be offputting but equally intriguing. I can’t help but somewhat respect Momoa’s dedication to such a silly role, giving his all to every outrageous line and action he is given. While I wouldn’t call it a great performance by most acting standards, it certainly elevates the film and makes it a far more entertaining watch.
As mentioned earlier, “Fast X” is filled to the brim with action. Characters don’t talk for more than five minutes before being thrown into a twenty-minute action sequence. As the first big chase sequence of the film began, I felt myself already becoming exhausted by the collision of loud cars and endless gunshots. Yet, as it evolved into a 60s Batman bomb sequence on steroids, I found myself being sucked into the absurdity of it all. This is how I felt most of the movie, letting the action play as white noise until the physics were dropped and the scenes became crazier and crazier in concept. When I’m seated for a Fast & Furious movie, I’m seated for ridiculous, out-of-this-world, testosterone-fueled action sequences — not the basic car chases I’ve seen done better in hundreds of other movies. “Fast X” delivers scenes of ludicrous action but only after revving up for what I would argue is too long.
I enjoyed watching “Fast X” more than “F9″ but it is obvious that any resemblance of quality control has been thrown out the window. “Fast X” is the second worst film of the year, only standing ahead of the Gerard Butler atrocity “Plane.”
I found myself entertained by a large section of the tenth installment, but I can’t say that it deserves my recommendation even as a nonsense popcorn flick. Momoa’s goofy performance and the preposterous fight scenes are fun but were not engaging enough for me not to check my watch multiple times throughout the film. For me, “Fast X” would be a fantastic airplane movie or something to have on in the background as I do house chores.

Gopher hockey leading offensive powerhouse and soon-to-be second-year player, Logan Cooley, announced Friday morning he will stay on for another year skating at Mariucci Arena.
Following Cooley’s commitment to Gopher Hockey next season, on Saturday evening fifth-year forward Bryce Brodzinski confirmed he was back along with rising fourth-years Mike Koster, Mason Nevers and Carl Fish. Before Cooley’s decision, earlier in the week 2022-23 Gopher hockey assistant captain Jaxon Nelson and starting goalie Justen Close also announced they would return.
The two fifth-year moves of Nelson and Close placed precedent for the biggest remaining piece of their offseason puzzle, Cooley, to come back in an effort to rebound from a heartbreaking end to their previous season. With Cooley back, along with the experience of the returning upperclassmen, this team is destined for another dominant year on the ice.
“After losing that game I didn’t want to think about hockey, it just made me mad,” said Cooley at a virtual press conference Saturday, whose main reason for returning was to win a national championship for the Minnesota program. “I haven’t really won that much either, losing the U18 NTDP Gold Medal Game and obviously the World Juniors.”
The Pittsburgh product and top three 2022 NHL draft pick, Cooley, announced Friday morning that he would return for his sophomore season on a joint Instagram post with fellow first-line returnee, Jimmy Snuggerud.
In the post, Snuggerud texted, “Yo cools, you coming back?” and Cooley replied “absolutely.”
Cooley said he is excited to continue to partner with Dinkytown Athletes, who engineered the post. Dinkytown Athletes is a popular NIL (name, image and likeness) organization used by athletes on campus.
“To hear about the kind of stuff the football guys are getting, hockey is only going to continue to grow with that and I’m happy to be a part of it,” Cooley said. “It’s awesome.”
His $950,000 yearly rookie NHL deal will be put on hold, but for a player like Cooley that’s no problem with many NIL suitors and current affiliations including his huge partnership with Chipotle, which grants him a free meal a day at a convenient location nearby at Stadium Village.
“We were so fortunate that Logan came with us, and we’re extremely excited that he’s coming back one more year,” Gophers coach Bob Motzko told the StarTribune Friday. “It’s a terrific decision and one that’s going to benefit him in the long run and benefit our program, no question. It’s great for both Logan and Jimmy to continue their development.”
Cooley played in 39 of Minnesota’s 40 games last season, only missing one due to a suspension off of a cross-check on Michigan’s Eric Ciccolini during a 5-2 win in November at Ann Arbor. He totaled 22 goals and 38 assists on the season, including a game-winning goal in a critical game on Jan. 8 against then No. 4 St. Cloud State, with 18.8 seconds left in overtime.
The recently turned 19-year-old also went on an impressive 16-game run of notching a point, the longest streak out of any Division I NCAA hockey player. The most notable moment during that stretch was when Cooley became the first Big Ten player in 2022-23 with a five-point performance (goal and four assists) in the second period at Penn State on Feb. 17. That run ended in the national championship overtime loss to the Quinnipiac Bobcats following a stellar postseason performance totaling six goals and six assists.
Another major factor that possibly prompted Cooley to return was the ongoing turmoil inside the professional organization that drafted him last July. The Arizona Coyotes recently had their plans for a brand new ice arena rejected by the city of Tempe and are a popular team to relocate to cities such as Houston, Kansas City and Milwaukee.
“I know the NHL will do things the right way and whether that’s Arizona … whether if it’s Houston, wherever it is they’re all great spots to play,” Cooley, who noted that he was leaning on towards entering the NHL if a successful stadium deal was set in stone, said.
Without a new stadium, the Coyotes will remain at the minuscule 5,000 capacity Mullett Arena hosted by Arizona State University. Coupling this with the fact the Coyotes are not likely to win anytime soon, it makes sense for the top American prospect in his draft class to stay in school for a little longer before entering the behemoth business of professional sports.
Cooley helped the U.S. World Juniors teams in 2022 and 2023 bringing home a bronze medal from Halifax, Canada in early January, scoring the first goal of the third-place game against Sweden off a no-look feed from Snuggerud.
“He’s the best player in college hockey,” Quinnipiac’s head coach and Cooley’s former head coach in the World Juniors, Rand Pecknold, told media on April 7, the day before he defeated the Gophers in Tampa, Florida.
This offseason, Cooley is training in his hometown right now with current professionals hailing from the Pittsburgh area such as J.T. Miller, Vincent Trocheck and John Gibson, utilizing a custom workout program sent directly to him from the Coyotes.
The term Cooley and Snuggerud said in their joint Instagram post on Friday was “unfinished business.”
“I still feel like I have room to grow and I want to accomplish some things in college hockey and after I think I’ll be more prepared to make the jump,” Cooley said.
