Orville Peck Gives New Meaning to “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy” with ‘Stampede’

Orville Peck has been rocking the boots and rhinestones for quite a while now. As the first openly gay country artist to be signed to a major label, he has taken that title to the limits and beyond with his sweet, sultry sound. As his career has carried on in evolution and continuing vulnerability, Peck has set a standard and continued to be a trailblazer in the music industry.

After a brief hiatus, Peck re-entered the scene with the long-awaited, full duets album “Stampede” on Friday, August 2. With so many names, creative sides and styles to work with, it’s a hard feat to approach but Peck does it all with ease. Each song is lyrically and musically differentiating, so let’s listen along this incredible musical roller coaster.

We Love a Good, Gay Cowboy Romance

Starting us off is “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other.” A duet sung with Willie Nelson, this was the collaboration that sparked the idea for the rest of the album. If you know anything about the film, “Brokeback Mountain,” this song will be incredibly familiar. The ease of the acoustic guitar combined with the whistling harmonica are stellar additions to this story.

The Hurtin’ Kind” shifts us into a love ballad. The harmonies of Peck and Midland are undoubtedly the major sellers on this track, which combines a falsetto into the belting energy of the song. Truly angelic. The lyrics “A one-night, lonesome cabaret meet me down where the broken-hearted stay,” and, “Lie together, tell me lies, baby, I don’t mind” are enough to make your heart wrench for him.

Elton John makes a presence in the next track in a cover of “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting).” Peck takes this song and creates a Western, casino-like jive to the melody which is an excitable change to the already phenomenal song.

Sweet, Sexy and Sultry

The next few tracks on the album, “Back At Your Door” and “Chemical Sunset,” both follow romances that carry on past the point of the end. Though they are similar in this light, the compositions are entirely different. “Back At Your Door,” sung with Debbii Dawson, has a sweeter side to it from the lightness of Dawson’s vocals and the soft instrumentation of the guitar and background vocals. “Chemical Sunset” creates a seductive undertone. Allison Russell’s vocals combined with the sultry drum beat bring a subtle R&B mix to the country side of Peck. It’s an incredible listen and by the end, you’ll be under Peck and Russell’s spell.

If Willie Nelson and Elton John weren’t already exciting additions, welcome Beck to the stage in Peck’s next track “Death Valley High.” Taking things back up a notch, this song takes the listener to the biggest party in the West.

How Far Will We Take It?” is a duet perfectly written for Peck and Noah Cyrus. These two have a phenomenal sound together which adds an extra layer to the heartbreaking story created by these lyrics. It’ll be sure to send tears strolling down your face.

Next, “Miénteme” introduces the addition of a Latin beat which has always been a constant pleasure in classic American country music as a genre. The mixing of Peck and Cuaron’s vocals and their constant harmony will send chills throughout your body. The groove is never-ending.

Is There Anything He Can’t Do?

Picking things up a bit, “Midnight Ride” inserts disco into Peck’s already stylish twang. Partnered with Kylie Minogue and Diplo, this song stands out among the others, in the best way possible. It opens up so much power in Peck’s vocals and creates the perfect tune to line dance to. It might just give “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” a run for its money.

Ever You’re Gone” takes us back to the R&B style from “Chemical Sunset.” Teddy Swims is featured on this track and what a presence he announces. The rasp within his voice and the smooth twang Peck brings to the plate is the perfect mix. The hook lies within the chorus while both musicians belt it out to an organ playing in the background as a full choir echoes throughout.

The next track switches gears once again. Incredibly comedic but honest, “You’re an Asshole, I Can’t Stand You (And I Want A Divorce)” is very similar to Dolly Parton’s sound. You can hear how much of an influence she’s had on Peck’s songwriting. Margo Price was the perfect partner to duet with on this track, as her vocals have that high-pitched twang that meshes perfectly with comedic writing.

Our Favorite Cowboy is Taking Off

Nathaniel Rateliff is the next feature in Peck’s next ballad, “Conquer The Heart.” A favorite of mine on the album, the belting harmonies between the two is hard to beat. And to top it all off is a saxophone solo that adds to the sexy love story created between the two artists.

Rhinestone Cowboy” finishes us off with the perfect theme song for every queer cowboy in the West. The classic country sound of the ensemble of Orville Peck, TJ Osborne, Waylon Payne and Fancy Hagood makes the perfect mashup for this gay anthem.

Besides a few unmentioned songs, there you have it! Be sure to check out “Stampede” now, available on all streaming services!

Eugene native Gwen Fife to join Oregon beach volleyball team

A new Duck is flying home — and making history.

Gwen Fife, an Eugene native and Sheldon High School graduate, will join the Oregon beach volleyball team, the University announced Friday morning. Fife is the fifth Oregon-born player on the Ducks’ roster and the first scholarship player in program history.

An incoming sophomore, the 6’0” transfer from the University of Utah tallied a 5-3 record as a Ute and was a significant part of the squad that defeated the Ducks (5-25, 1-5 conference play)  in the Pac-12 Tournament.

Fife’s commitment comes as Oregon beach volleyball is currently suing the University amid a sex discrimination lawsuit, which states the University treats male and female athletes differently.

“Since the University of Oregon created the beach volleyball team a decade ago, it has not provided one penny of athletic financial aid to any of the team’s members,” the case’s attorney, Arthur Bryant said. “That’s one of the reasons this Title IX lawsuit was filed. It is wonderful and not a surprise that Oregon is finally providing at least some athletic financial aid to at least one member of the team, but that is nowhere near enough. Women at Oregon are still being deprived of nearly $900,000 a year in equal financial aid. Oregon needs to fix that.”

Everything you need to know about TikTok vs. the US

Jose Gonzalez-Campelo/The Cougar

In June, Tiktok and a group of creators filed a lawsuit against the United States, for a law requiring the China based company to sell the app or face a nationwide ban.

In the brief, Tiktok’s lawyers argue that the law signed by President Joe Biden, specifically singles out TikTok and is “unconstitutional” for limiting the freedom of speech for millions of Americans.

“The Act is unconstitutional because of its unique, two-tiered system of speech regulation, which singles out TikTok for disfavor,” said the brief. “That flaw is sufficient to invalidate the Act irrespective of any purported national security justification.”

The bill was tucked in with a $95 billion foreign aid package to Ukraine and Israel and was passed in the Senate 79-18.

The U.S. House of Representatives made the decision to add-in the TikTok bill into the foreign aid package after an earlier version of the bill failed to make it out of the Senate.

The new bill gives TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, until Jan. 19 next year to sell its U.S. based operations or face a nationwide ban.

Officials in Congress have cited concerns about the app’s influence and national security risks. They want the app to be sold to another entity altogether.

However, the officials have not disclosed what kind of threat the app poses and how serious the threat is, said assistant professor of journalism and media studies Nandikoor Prashanth Bhat.

“We also don’t have any evidence, at least in public domain, which shows that Tiktok shares American user data with the Chinese government,” Bhat said. “So, a lot of these details are very opaque, we don’t have credible evidence yet.’

This is the basis on which TikTok is making the argument on how all of this is a violation of free speech, according to Bhat.

While social media apps like TikTok, can have negative impacts on society for a lot of reasons, banning the app right now, when young people are using it to criticize Israel for the war on Palestine, is apprehensive, said architecture senior Ethan Work.

“I agree in principle with banning TikTok because it is a net negative on society for reasons too numerous to name,” Work said. “However it’s suspicious that it’s only happening now because of the rampant criticism of the state of Israel that has overtaken the platform and the fact that the U.S. government has a vested interest in funding Israel.”

Although there is no question that TikTok is under a lot of pressure about their views on foreign policy, a lot of the debate on banning the app took place before the current crises in the Middle East.

“My impression was that the TikTok discussion was primarily about national security and that’s why they went to sort of start the process to ban it which happened largely before a lot of the kind of current crisis in the Middle East,” said political science professor Brandon Rottinghaus. “So, my sense is that they’re not connected but they very well could be.”

In 2020, former President Donald Trump attempted to ban the app through an executive order. However, courts blocked the move after TikTok sued.

While concerns about TikTok continue to grow in the federal government, the app is used by more than 170 million people in the U.S. About one-third of young people get their news regularly from TikTok, according to Pew Research Center.

“Functionally banning TikTok will eliminate a primary source of media and news for a lot of people,” Rottinghaus said. “ So there’s definitely gonna be an impact.”

A U.S. Appeals court will hear oral arguments on the case on Sept. 16.

The Justice Department had to file briefs by July 26, with reply briefs due by Aug. 15. TikTok and the Justice Department are seeking a decision by Dec. 6 in order to seek the U.S. Supreme Court’s review, if needed.

5 spots to jump-start your live music addiction

Whether you’re new to Fort Collins or have been in town for years and are looking for a change in pace, here are the top five stops we recommend checking when starting your live music addition — and trust us: It’s an addiction.

1. Wolverine Farm Publick House

If you grew up with earbuds in and your nose always in a book, observing rather than participating and you have an obscure theory in the back of your mind just waiting for the right moment to share it, Wolverine Farm Publick House live music nights might just be your safe haven.

The establishment is a true jack of all trades, working as a bookstore, publishing company, coffee shop, group event provider, live music venue and so much more. Whether you prefer to grab a friend or bring a book, your night can only get better with an evening of live music at the local Wolverine Farm.

2. The Coast

On the opposite side of the live music spectrum is local music venue The Coast. If you like to wake up sore the next morning from a good ole mosh pit and a slight ringing in the ear from standing a little too close to the amp, The Coast is likely a great fit for you.

The venue is structured as a bar in the front leading into a small stage and pit, reaching capacity at 300 people. The intimate stage setup is what makes this venue perfect for your first local Fort Collins music experience.

3. New Belgium Brewing Company

One of the main attractions in Fort Collins is New Belgium Brewing Company, and while bikes and beer make for excellent companions on their own, the brewery’s live music scene is well overlooked. If you are someone who likes to sit, watch and take it all in with the occasional get up and dance, this spot is for you.

The brewery primarily showcases local artists ranging from bluegrass to DJs. It’s a great spot for music lovers to sit, grab a beer and enjoy the music and beautiful outdoor scenery.

4. Washington’s

Washington’s, which originally started as a sports bar and grill, has evolved since its 2017 remodel into a beloved show venue in Fort Collins’ Old Town. With a capacity of 900 people, a balcony in case standing in the pit isn’t your style and a wide range of contemporary music, the venue is a great place for most anyone.

The only thing that may hold you back from experiencing live music at Washington’s is that most of their shows are for people over the age of 21. If you are under 21, you might be lucky to find a few shows that are exceptions, but for the most part, the venue is only open to 21-and-older crowds.

5. Aggie Theatre

A list of live music venues in Fort Collins wouldn’t be complete without Aggie Theatre. Aggie Theatre is the true pipeline of live music in Fort Collins. Even though it is not the largest venue in town — and not even the largest on this list — it is one of, if not the most, loved venues in town. Hosting multiple shows every week all year-round for every genre imaginable, the Aggie has created a reputation for itself as the primary concert venue of Fort Collins. If you are looking to see a big-name local band or touring artist, check on the Aggie website, as they might have something exactly your taste coming soon.

Oregon T&F’s Jaida Ross competes in first Olympic Games, qualifies for shot put final

Two months ago, Oregon track and field’s Jaida Ross was busy winning her first NCAA shot put championship. A few weeks later, she was occupied with OIympic qualification. On Thursday, the 22-year-old competed in Paris — her first time on the Olympic stage.

Ross, who spent the past three years in Eugene with the Ducks’ track and field team, is one of three shot-putters in Paris this summer. Chase Jackson and Raven Saunders also qualified in the June USATF Olympic Trials, hosted at Hayward Field in Eugene. Ross currently holds the collegiate record in the women’s shot put, set last season at 20.01m.

The Medford, Oregon native competed in the preliminary rounds of the shot put on Thursday, where she threw 18.58m — good for seventh overall and a berth in the next round.

Finals for the competition are set to begin tomorrow, at 10:37 a.m. Pacific time.

5 new restaurants in Fort Collins worth trying this fall

From popular fast food chains to mom-and-pop kitchens, Fort Collins is a foodie haven with over 300 places to eat and cuisine for almost any palette. It seems like every month, another restaurant is closing its doors, and a new one is waiting to take its place. If you want to branch out from the Northern Colorado staples this fall, here are five restaurants that have opened within the past year worth trying out.

1. Agave Underground

Not to be confused with the beloved Blue Agave Grill located underneath the Museum of Art Fort Collins, Agave Underground is an authentic Mexican restaurant next to Foothills Mall that has developed a cult following since opening its doors in late 2023. They’ve become so well known for their margaritas and flavorful takes on classic dishes, you don’t hear about the gorgeous ambiance of the space that pays homage to Mexican culture. Agave Underground aims to bring Fort Collins a unique culinary experience that showcases exquisite and traditional upscale dishes from all over Mexico.

2. Sushi-Fi

Sushi-Fi is an all-you-can-eat sushi spot off East Harmony Road and South Lemay Avenue that took over the Nimo’s Sushibar space. They just opened in May and are already drawing rave reviews from sushi lovers and frequent customers. Sushi-Fi offers two tiers of all-you-can-eat sushi — either basic or premium — a la carte sushi options, rice bowls, Japanese appetizers and a large sake collection. Sushi-Fi is dedicated to freshness and quality. Each sushi roll is prepared in-house with ingredients imported from Japan.

3. Avery Eatery

Replacing Next Door Street Bar in Old Town, Avery Eatery opened its doors in January and is bringing gratitude, enthusiasm and sustainably sourced ingredients to the table. Avery is owned by the same people as Little on Mountain who are committed to sourcing local ingredients. They offer baked goods, coffee drinks and hot breakfast, along with lunch, in-between food, drinks and a full supper menu. They want to create a space that is for everyone and give back to the community — it’s a great restaurant with an even greater purpose.

4. Horsetooth Tavern

As the name implies, Horsetooth Tavern is tucked into Horsetooth Mountain Open Space near Horsetooth Falls and the Horsetooth Reservoir South Bay Campground. They offer a cozy, family-friendly American pub-type atmosphere with hearty comfort food and gorgeous views of the foothills from their patio. Previously known as the local favorite Canyon Grill, the restaurant reopened in mid-June as Horsetooth Tavern after being closed for a year, now under new management. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, and they have a full bar, live music and karaoke night every Wednesday 7-10 p.m. Horsetooth Tavern aims to marry mountain life with lake life and create a familiar place for tourists and locals alike.

5. Yellow Crunch

Yellow Crunch is NoCo’s first Colombian restaurant and opened in The Exchange in January, racking up five-star reviews since. Named after the crunchy yellow cornmeal that makes up a variety of foods like arepas rellenas and empanadas, Yellow Crunch is a family-owned store that strives to share dishes rich in Colombia’s culture. Their customer service, specialty cocktails, happy hour deals and vegetarian and gluten-free options have solidified them as a Fort Collins favorite, as they are already looking to expand their space to accommodate even more customers and create a more extensive menu in a bigger kitchen.
