Fall forecast: Gopher athletics face a season of change

MEGAN DAVIS: Hello, Gopher fans. It’s Megan Davis and…

ATTICUS MARSE: Atticus Marse.

DAVIS: With the Minnesota Daily, and you’re listening to the Gold Standard, a podcast dedicated to the University of Minnesota Sports. Today, I’m basically just gonna be going over some of my previous articles and some of the articles that I have coming up.

The first one that I’m very excited for is about Kelly Kinney and Jordan Taylor, who are both two new incoming freshmen to the volleyball team. They both actually recently played under head coach Keegan Cook in the U19 USA tournament in Croatia.

Unfortunately, the girls came and placed second, and they won the silver medal falling short to Bulgaria of all countries. This was actually Bulgaria’s first ever gold medal in women’s sports at all. So I guess it’s not that bad. The Bulgarians will enjoy that medal, I think a lot more than the U.S. will.

But basically, the volleyball’s upcoming season is going to start August 16 with an exhibition game. And then the first official start will be August 25 against number 16 Texas A&M. I have very high hopes for the upcoming volleyball season.

They have a lot of good retaining players and then obviously incoming with these two new freshmen. I think they’re supposed to finish fourth in the Big Ten, but I think they could honestly do better than that even though the Big Ten is very competitive this year in volleyball.

MARSE: Are they coming in ranked this year? Do they have a ranking?

DAVIS: I don’t know if they have a ranking. My next story after the two that I published this week will probably also be about volleyball and the high expectations that they have for this season, just because they. We’re booted in the second round of the NCAA tournament last year, and obviously are looking to go further this year.

MARSE: As of December 23, 2024, the end of last year, the Gophers were not in the top 25. So, not ideal, but I’m sure they’ll get, I’m sure they’ll make their way up there.

DAVIS: This is Cook’s, I wanna say this is only his third year with the team. He’s still a relatively new coach and so adjusting to a different system. He used to coach the University of Washington’s team. And so, I think last year was still a little bit more adjustment, and I think this year everything’s fallen more into place.

MARSE: Speaking of new coaches, what do you think about the new Gophers basketball coach? Do you think he’s gonna have success in his first year?

DAVIS: No, not really. I think the Gophers will be better as a team. Yes. Do I think that we’re all of a sudden gonna be a school to watch in the Big Ten in terms of men’s basketball? No.

Mainly just because with who they’ve been recruiting, they don’t really have any standout player. And when you are competing in the Big Ten, it’s an incredibly competitive league.

MARSE: Yeah, he did take Colorado State to the tournament last year, Nico Medved. And he’s an alumni of the U of M.

DAVIS: I actually didn’t know he was an alumni.

MARSE: Yeah, he’s an alumni and he actually used to manage the Gopher basketball team way back when in the nineties. The main hope for the basketball team this year is transfers. He’s flipped a couple guys from his alma mater. Who we got transferred?

DAVIS: We have Isaac Asuma. We have Cade Tyson, he’s a transfer from North Carolina. Didn’t get a lot of minutes there, but, there’s actually been a whole bunch of pieces of just getting to know the transfer students.

We do have a few new transfers. I just don’t think that any of those transfers have the capabilities to really take us over the edge, especially after losing Dawson Garcia. Like it will, he was the staple of the team.

MARSE: That’s why we’re a hockey school.

DAVIS: Speaking of hockey, multiple Gophers are being sent to compete for a roster spot on USA hockey’s teams because we have the IIHF tournament coming in December. So they just actually got done. USA White and USA Blue just got done at Ridder Arena, just doing some tournament prep and picking out who’s gonna be on the final roster.

Along with multiple, I think it was a dozen, both current and former Gophers are going to upstate New York to compete for the women’s USA hockey team.

And then the World Juniors for men will be in St. Paul this December. So that’s super fun because I believe last year they were in Finland, so it’s nice to have it at home, especially when the USA loves to take home that gold medal and World Juniors.

Oh, also speaking of other world championships, track and field, they have the 2025 World Athletics Championships being held in Tokyo this year. And multiple Gophers are competing for a spot to compete in Tokyo. So there will be multiple different national championships happening over the course of the next month.

The USA, they’ll have theirs in Eugene, Oregon back, at Hayward Field. So any of the Gopher athletes who did that will be very familiar with that field because they’ve been there like four times in the past, like two months.

My only upcoming story it’s gonna be about the McCauley sisters just teaching golf lessons. They did a program that basically helps let kids access golf courses for only about $5, which is much cheaper than the average green fee would be. They did it with former Minnesota Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph. And it was just like a way to give back. Fun little charity thing.

MARSE: Yeah, Gopher football preseason starting training camp started two days ago. And with preseason starting all these, all American watchlists are coming out. Koi Perich just seems to be on all of them from what I can see on Instagram.

It looks like we got the Jim Thorpe, the Bronko Nagurski watch list. Darius Taylor’s on the Maxwell Award watch list for best offensive player. So that’s fun, meaningless, but.

DAVIS: But fun nonetheless.

MARSE: Fun nonetheless. And Koi Perich was first team, all Big Ten.

DAVIS: And then speaking of that, I think Regan will have, I don’t know how many stories in total, but she was in Vegas kind of covering the Big Ten media days, and so she got to see a lot of the different Gophers talk and guys just get more understanding about what’s happening in the Big Ten this year in terms of football.

So I would look out for those stories because they’ll be super interesting, because she was actually there, and she’s not just watching media recordings.

MARSE: In a recent Gophers’ Media day, Koi Perich was asked about transferring and trying to play in the NFL. And he answered that his whole life, he just wanted to be a Viking, funnily enough, and that he was just trying to check off his years for the Gophers.

Get his three years in college just so he can play in the National Football League. All those Vikings fans, I’m sure, are over the moon with that information that he’s hoping of landing there. But if he keeps playing like this.

DAVIS: I was gonna say they gotta be able to draft him.

MARSE: Yeah, he is gonna be too high up in the first round if there’s any chance at that. But it’s looking good for him, transferring away, then that he probably won’t leave the Gophers in his time in college. As of now, based on what he’s saying, I think he’ll be staying a Gopher.

Another thing I wanna touch on is the Gophers’ schedule and home and away games this year is quite unbalanced in terms of high-ranked Big Ten opponents. But then we do get the Badgers at home. That’s always a fun game, the Axe game. I was at the Axe game in Madison last year. I think there were more Gopher fans there than Badger fans. And I think the Axe is staying here.

DAVIS: I hope the Axe is staying. We deserve that Axe.

MARSE: We do deserve the Axe and the Pig.

DAVIS: Regan posted a crystal ball kind of thing for the football season

MARSE: Yeah, I’ve read that story.

DAVIS: If you like that, you should just go read this story, too. I did one for women’s basketball, which was so much fun to write. I did predict that we’re only gonna be slightly better than last year, but I said we’d finally make that March Madness tournament.

MARSE: We need a Gophers team in March Madness, that’s all I want before I graduate.

DAVIS: I think that women’s team is close.

MARSE: And I think one more thing, one of the biggest stories coming outta athletics right now that I wanna touch on is the athletics fee. So basically. This upcoming semester, with tuition hikes, each student will pay a hundred dollars a semester.

It goes directly towards Gopher sports in the athletic department. Hannah and Ash just did a story on this. But yeah, with NIL budgets to keep up competitively with other schools. It’s something the university felt they had to do, it looks like.

Because they chose to use the maximum 20 and a half million dollars that you’re allowed to pay athletes through NIL, because every other Big Ten school did the exact same thing. There seemed to be, from that story, there was mixed feelings from students. It’ll probably be more in the news in the coming weeks.

But most of that money’s going straight to football, too. It’s 15 million to football, 4 million to basketball, and then the rest of sports, they’re just getting pennies of the dollar there. It’s hockey, women’s basketball and volleyball. And then, I don’t know if any other athletes are getting any money.

DAVIS: Let me, because I wrote a story right when the house versus NCAA settlement passed. And that was like literally the prediction. It was like, okay, 75% of the money is gonna go to football. You might get 10%; this isn’t gonna add up to a hundred, so I’m sorry.

But you might get like 10% to men’s basketball, and then it’ll be like 5% to whatever. The school’s good at, and so I guess it’s not shocking at all. I would like to see what the other Big Tens like; are they all making their students pay extra?

MARSE: I am not sure on that. Okay. There’s a, there’s other schools. Looks like University of Louisville has added a $200 student athletic fee.

DAVIS: Okay.

MARSE: I’m not seeing a lot of other ones, but with government money, budget cuts, I would not be surprised if we see this on a large majority of Division I schools.

DAVIS: Yeah.

MARSE: And I think one of the big things is the fact that it’s not being evenly dispersed. Because that brings in Title IX disputes, and then there becomes, that’s definitely gonna happen. It was talked about in the story, too. There’s gonna be some ongoing legal battles.

DAVIS: Oh, a hundred percent.

MARSE: Around where this money goes. And at that point, it’s just the athletics department is operating as a professional sports team.

DAVIS: Yeah. It’ll be interesting to see how it unravels more, just because it’s the argument that people have been making about women’s basketball for years, where it’s like, of course, they don’t deserve as much money. They’re not bringing in as much money. And so that’s the argument that they could put for the football team.

MARSE: Yeah.

DAVIS: Because obviously, the football team is making the most money.

But it’s easy to see all sides of it. Just, this is just how the cookie crumbles.

MARSE: College sports will never be the same after this settlement.

DAVIS: This episode is by Megan Davis and…

MARSE: Atticus Marse.

DAVIS: And produced by Ceci Heinen. As always, we appreciate you listening in, and feel free to send a message to our email inbox at podcasting@mndaily.com with any questions, comments or concerns.

I’m Megan Davis.

MARSE: And I’m Atticus Marse.

DAVIS: And this has been the Gold Standard.

UMN to honor over 80 farm families at annual Minnesota Farmfest

The University of Minnesota will honor families from nearly every county in the state this coming week, as part of its program honoring farm agriculture contributions.

The Farm Family Recognition Program, which the University has used to honor Minnesota farmers since 1979, will recognize 86 farmers and their families on August 7 at Farmfest, an annual three-day agricultural celebration held in Redwood County.

The annual recognition ceremony, coordinated by University Extension, the College of Veterinary Medicine, and the College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences, aims to honor families each year for their contributions to the agriculture industry and their local communities.

Kia Harries, the director of statewide operations for Extension, said the recognition program ultimately celebrates the importance of agriculture in the state and highlights the way the industry is changing through the work of different families across Minnesota.

Harries said Extension committees in each county independently review and select families to be recognized each year, functioning differently by county.

Harries said the committees focus on how different family farms and agricultural businesses are engaged in the industry, from the kinds of techniques being used to the environmental improvements being made. The committees also examine how families are involved in their local communities.

Harries said farms taking different approaches to the agriculture industry, including farms being honored, help the industry grow and expand.

“Agriculture continues to be the foundation of Minnesota; it’s an industry that we can’t do without, but it changes,” Harries said. “We acknowledge that through education, through things that people learn, they change their industry, and the University is a part of that.”

Now, this education has begun to form an industry within agriculture.

Agritourism is the combining of agricultural production with tourism to attract people to farms and businesses in order to educate people while generating income, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

Nearly 4,000 farms in Minnesota offer direct sales or agritourism, according to a 2017 Agriculture Census. Roughly 18% of these farms made more than $50,000 in direct sales or agritourism the same year.

Susanne Hinrichs, an Extension educator in Agricultural Business Management, said the county committees are more frequently examining and promoting farms that are doing niche farming work and welcoming people to their farms through agritourism.

“It is fun to see how the committees are recognizing that farming involves all of these different ways of farming and agritourism is one of them,” Hinrichs said. “I think that they are being highlighted more and more in the Farm Family of the Year program.”

Hinrichs said newer generations of farmers are finding ways to support their farms through agritourism, in an attempt to reach more people and expand their operations. Hinrichs added many of the farms honored this year and in years past have been unique because of the niche farming that is growing in the state.

“One farm I worked with a few years ago, honored by Morrison County, was a family that raises minnows,” Hinrichs said. “You wouldn’t even think that’s agriculture, but it is and, in a way, it’s a local economic system.”

Hinrichs said the program has honored farmers multiple times over the years, but this year, beginning farmers — those who have been farming for 10 years or less — make up a majority of the honorees.

Rochester Village Agricultural Cooperative volunteer Valerie Djuissi, one of the honorees this year, said her family’s current work revolves around providing land access for growing food in urban areas. The cooperative benefits over 200 families, and its mission promotes providing food access to displaced and immigrant families.

Djuissi added that the cooperative’s work across multiple sites in Rochester ultimately helps foster a community and get people outside. She said she is also part of Go Farm Connect in Minneapolis, which works to connect farmers with USDA resources.

Djuissi said receiving the call that her family’s work across different initiatives was being honored came as a surprise.

“I was very shocked, I hadn’t heard about a program like that,” Djuissi said. “I didn’t know someone was looking after what I was doing.”

Djuissi said she is personally connected to the Extension program through volunteering as a master gardener and conducting research in the past. She added that the University remains a resource she turns to.

“They are a great help,” Djuissi said. “If any farmer has a question, or we have questions, that’s the place for us to go.”

Alex Udermann, who operates Meadowbrook Dairy Inc., said his family’s farm was nominated this year to the Farm Families program by a chair on the Stearns County board of commissioners.

Udermann felt the nomination came as a surprise, but said it feels like the larger community is recognizing the work their family and farm is doing. He said he hopes to use the recognition to their advantage and continue growing community involvement.

Udermann’s fifth-generation dairy, beef, and row crop farm focuses on regenerative farming practices. The farm sells beef directly to consumers and is committed to improving soil health and reducing commercial fertilizer use.

Udermann said the farm ultimately aims to educate the community, including other farmers and consumers, about the benefits of sustainable practices for the agricultural industry, along with the practices’ benefits for human health.

“People always ask me why we’re doing what we’re doing, it’s freedom to farm the way we want to,” Udermann said. “Once you understand how the soil works, how biology affects crops, you understand this, what we’re doing is purely for the consumer and everyone’s better wellbeing.”

Jim Fordham, a second-generation tree farmer and owner of High Plains Tree Farm, said the recognition he has received comes as he seeks to continue the work his parents started in the 1970s, alongside his wife and daughters. Fordham said the family involvement and commitment to their farm are what make their business work.

“My wife and I took it over in 2019 and have been trying to rebuild it to what it was and better,” Fordham said. “We have roughly about 80 acres, I’m pretty invested in it, and I love the challenge that comes with it.”

Fordham said the farm grows a variety of trees, but primarily sells Christmas trees. He said he wants to increase sales from 2,500 trees per year to 3,000 by 2030.

The farm operates as a choose-and-cut model business, according to Fordham, with families cutting their own trees. He added that despite the challenges their farm has faced in recent years, it ultimately helps provide more opportunities for his family.

Fordham said his family hopes to expand the farm to include a gift shop and more community activities.

“My goal is just growth and getting to a point where we could really expound on our business and create new kinds of fun experiences for families,” Fordham said.

Opinion: Integrate Mindfulness Into Your Day

College-aged students are embarking on a new chapter in their lives, which can be a daunting experience. Life starts moving at a rapid pace with a full agenda and seemingly endless tasks. For students away from home for most of the year, it can be especially challenging to find grounding. It is beneficial for students to integrate mindful practices into their daily routines for stress reduction and easier living.

Mindfulness is the act of paying attention to the present moment without judgment. This takes on many forms and can be practiced in many different ways.

With that being said, there is a vast maze of starting points. Figuring out where to start can be intimidating for beginners.

Integrating mindfulness practices at home is accessible, beginner-friendly and great for building habits.

Where to Start

The key to integrating mindfulness is to establish a consistent routine.

The concept of establishing a blissful morning or nighttime routine is littered across social media. It is challenging to remain consistent with these trends because they are not specifically tailored to the individual.

Having an individual aligned routine is essential to consistency. The right fit will require personal trial and error. For this reason, copying exact routines from social media trends will not prove to be fruitful.

The best place to start is by figuring out what makes you feel good and doing more of it. Although simple, this is a practical anchoring point for building your road map.

Journaling a freeform list of things that make you feel better tells you precisely what you can add to your routine. For example, following equational prompts that say ‘I feel better when…’ is a great starting point.

This reflects habits that are already within reach and can be integrated seamlessly into a habitual routine.

The Power of Intention Setting

Intention setting is the practice of purposely choosing a direction for one’s actions with the goal of cultivating a particular quality of mind.

This is a practice that can be integrated easily into one’s daily routine but has a large impact. Setting intentions every day increases self-confidence, focus and positivity.

It is an impactful way to break through preconceived limitations you may hold toward yourself and track your progress as you do so.

Intentions may look like ‘speak positively’ or ‘accomplish the hardest thing on my to-do list.’ Setting intentions in the morning takes only a small amount of time and can even replace the immediate desire to scroll through social media in the morning.

Meditation For Beginners

Meditation is a powerful tool for mindfulness, but can be an intimidating and vulnerable medium to use.

The practice offers numerous benefits, including reducing stress and anxiety, as well as enhancing mood and cognitive skills.

While entering the practice, many believe that they must sit in silence and try to still their bodies and minds. This misconception often deters people from meditation.

It is nearly impossible and frustrating to be completely still, but stillness is not the primary purpose of this practice.

Instead, build upon what you already know and do so at your own pace. Start small — five or 10 minutes — and experiment with what works or doesn’t work for you.

It may take a few tries to find a guided meditation that you like and the environment that suits you best. Sitting in meditation once a day can have a profoundly positive impact on your day. Meditating in the morning with the intentions you’ve just set can direct your day and ground you through whatever challenges arise.

Habit Stacking

Habit stacking is the integration of a new habit into a routine that is already practiced. This encourages integration of new habits and aids in consistency of new practices.

Starting with the addition of one new mindful practice at a time is beneficial for the longevity of the routine. For example, meditation pairs wonderfully with intention setting.

It is effective to find a guided meditation that aligns with your intended quality of mind. This is also easier than picking randomly from the sea of guided meditations for beginners on the internet.

These practices are foundational for receiving the most out of the day. These are ways to develop a routine that requires small commitments and can be built upon as you discover what works for you.

Habit stacking may also look like incorporating mindfulness into the mundane routines that already exist.

For example, perhaps the routine of drinking a morning coffee becomes a great time to meditate. Adding intentional routines that ground you throughout the day makes the more complicated things in life easier, and the easier things in life more appreciated.

Relieve the stress of your college years by giving back to yourself with your time and effort.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have become essential tools in the evolution of fraud detection within the iGaming industry. These technologies analyze vast volumes of data generated by player activities, transactions, and interactions, enabling operators to detect suspicious behavior with far greater accuracy than traditional static, rules-based systems. Unlike fixed rule sets that require manual updates, AI models continuously learn from new data, adapting to emerging fraud tactics in real time. This dynamic learning process allows fraud detection systems to stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated schemes.

Machine learning algorithms excel at identifying subtle and complex patterns that might indicate fraudulent behavior, such as account takeovers, collusion between players, or unusual betting activity that deviates from typical patterns. For instance, sudden spikes in bet sizes, frequent large withdrawals, or synchronized betting behaviors can all be flagged automatically for further investigation. This proactive detection helps operators intervene before significant losses occur, protecting both the casino and legitimate players.

By automating much of the detection and response workflow, AI and ML reduce the burden on human analysts, who can instead focus on reviewing high-priority cases. Automation speeds up the response time, which is critical in a fast-paced, 24/7 online gambling environment where fraudsters continuously evolve their methods.

Behavioral Analytics for Enhanced Security

Behavioral analytics complements AI and ML by focusing specifically on how players interact with casino platforms. This approach examines data such as session lengths, betting patterns, click behavior, device fingerprints, and geographic login locations to establish a baseline of normal user behavior. Real-time monitoring then detects deviations from this baseline that could signal fraudulent activity.

Examples of suspicious behavior detected through behavioral analytics include rapid, repeated bets that suggest bot activity, multiple account logins from the same device or IP address, and login attempts from unusual or high-risk geographic regions. When such anomalies are identified, operators can immediately flag accounts for review or apply automated security measures.

Combining behavioral data with AI-powered models enhances the accuracy of fraud alerts, reducing false positives that inconvenience genuine players. This is crucial for maintaining a smooth user experience while ensuring robust security. Furthermore, behavioral insights enable personalized risk scoring—assigning each player a risk level based on their activity profile.

This nuanced risk assessment allows operators to implement tailored security measures. For low-risk players, the platform can allow seamless gameplay without interruptions. For higher-risk cases, additional verification steps like step-up authentication or temporary account restrictions can be applied selectively. This balance between security and user convenience helps preserve player trust and loyalty.

In conclusion, the integration of AI, machine learning, and behavioral analytics represents a cutting-edge approach to fraud prevention in iGaming. By leveraging these technologies, operators can detect threats more effectively, respond faster, and provide safer, more enjoyable experiences for their players. As fraud tactics continue to advance, the adoption of intelligent, adaptive fraud detection systems will be essential for sustaining market integrity and player confidence.

Future Trends: Automation, Collaboration, and Regulation

The future of real-time fraud detection in iGaming is set to be shaped by several key advancements that enhance security and responsiveness. Automation will play a central role, with systems capable of instantly identifying and reacting to suspicious activities by flagging, blocking, or verifying transactions without needing human input. This reduces response times and minimizes potential damage.

Cross-industry collaboration is another critical factor. By sharing threat intelligence, operators and regulators create a united front against fraudsters who often target multiple platforms simultaneously. Such cooperation strengthens defenses and helps identify emerging fraud patterns faster.

Regulatory evolution will demand more transparent, auditable fraud prevention methods, ensuring that operators maintain high compliance standards. Technologies like blockchain offer promise by providing immutable transaction records that enhance security and trust. Key components shaping the future of fraud detection include:

  • Advanced automation enabling instant threat response
  • Real-time behavioral analytics to spot anomalies quickly
  • Information sharing between operators and regulatory bodies
  • Transparent and auditable compliance frameworks
  • Adoption of blockchain for secure, tamper-proof transaction records

Together, these elements will help iGaming platforms stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated fraud tactics, protecting players and market integrity.

No bill, no maps, no clarity at UH redistricting hearing

The Texas House Select Committee on Redistricting held a public hearing Saturday at UH, drawing frustration and criticism from lawmakers and community members over the absence of a proposed bill and the intent behind the meeting.

The hearing was called in response to Gov. Greg Abbott’s July 9 proclamation initiating a special session of the Texas Legislature. The session focused on redrawing congressional districts 2, 7, 8, 9, 14, 18, 22, 29, 36 and 38, all of which impact the Houston and greater Southeast Texas region.

Despite the hearings, many committee members voiced confusion about the committee’s purpose, as no redistricting bill had been filed.

“Many of us don’t know why we’re here,” several lawmakers said, referencing the absence of draft maps or legislation for public review.

Tensions flared during the session, including heated exchanges between the committee chair and other members over procedural questions and a perceived lack of transparency.

Several lawmakers and residents raised concerns that holding hearings without a bill undermines public trust and community engagement.

Democratic State Rep. Jon Rosenthal, whose District 135 includes parts of Northwest Houston, said the process appeared to lack fairness and inclusivity.

“This process is not about making things fair,” Rosenthal said. “It’s about taking the power and voice away from Black and brown communities.”

Members of the public were invited to provide testimony. Some shared concerns over gerrymandering, representation and voter suppression, while others demanded more transparency and time to review district proposals, which had yet to be released.

Saturday’s meeting marked one of several redistricting hearings scheduled across the state during the special session. As of now, no official maps have been made public, and the committee has taken no legislative action.

Whole House Fan Installation: Lower Energy Bills This Summer

As summer temperatures soar and energy costs continue to climb, homeowners are seeking effective ways to cool their homes without breaking the bank. One increasingly popular solution that’s been gaining attention is the whole house fan—a powerful ventilation system that can dramatically reduce cooling costs while maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures. Understanding how these systems work and the installation process can help you make an informed decision about whether this energy-efficient cooling method is right for your home.

What Is a Whole House Fan?

A whole house fan is a large, electrically powered fan typically installed in the ceiling of a home’s upper floor or attic space (you can also go with a ceiling fan in multiple rooms if you don’t have easy access to the attic). Unlike traditional air conditioning systems that recirculate and cool the same indoor air, whole house fans work by pulling cool outdoor air into the home through open windows and doors, then exhausting hot indoor air through attic vents. This creates a powerful cross-breeze throughout the entire house, effectively flushing out accumulated heat and replacing it with cooler outside air.

The concept is elegantly simple yet remarkably effective. During cooler periods—typically in the evening, early morning, or during mild weather—the fan draws fresh air through the living spaces and pushes hot air out through the roof vents. This natural cooling process can lower indoor temperatures by 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit in many cases, often eliminating the need for air conditioning during moderate weather conditions.

Energy Savings and Cost Benefits

The financial advantages of whole house fans are substantial and immediate. While a central air conditioning system can consume 3,000-5,000 watts of electricity per hour, a whole house fan typically uses only 120-600 watts—roughly equivalent to running a few light bulbs. This dramatic difference in energy consumption translates directly to lower utility bills, with many homeowners reporting 50-90% reductions in cooling costs during suitable weather conditions.

Beyond the immediate energy savings, whole house fans can extend the lifespan of your air conditioning system by reducing its workload during milder periods. Instead of running the AC constantly throughout the summer months, you can rely on the whole house fan during cooler periods and reserve air conditioning for the hottest days. This reduced usage means less wear and tear on your HVAC system, potentially saving thousands in repair and replacement costs over time.

The return on investment is typically excellent. Most whole house fan installations pay for themselves within 2-5 years through reduced energy bills, making them one of the most cost-effective home cooling improvements available.

Installation Considerations and Process

Installing a whole house fan requires careful planning and consideration of your home’s structure and ventilation needs. The first step involves selecting the right size fan for your square footage—generally, you’ll need a fan that can move 2-3 cubic feet of air per minute for every square foot of living space. A qualified contractor can help calculate the exact requirements based on your home’s layout, ceiling height, and local climate conditions.

The installation process typically begins with selecting an appropriate location, usually in a central hallway or stairwell on the top floor. The chosen spot must provide adequate structural support and allow for proper airflow throughout the home. Professional installers will assess the ceiling joists, electrical requirements, and attic space to ensure a safe and effective installation.

Adequate attic ventilation is crucial for whole house fan effectiveness. Your attic must have sufficient intake and exhaust vents to handle the increased airflow. Most installations require at least one square foot of attic vent space for every 750 cubic feet per minute of fan capacity. If your home lacks adequate ventilation, additional soffit vents, ridge vents, or gable vents may need to be installed.

The electrical work involves running appropriate wiring to power the fan and installing controls, which can range from simple wall switches to programmable thermostats and timers. Many modern systems include variable speed controls, allowing you to adjust the fan’s intensity based on cooling needs and noise preferences.

Types of Whole House Fans

Several types of whole house fans are available, each with distinct advantages. Traditional belt-drive fans are powerful and relatively inexpensive but can be noisy during operation. Direct-drive fans offer quieter operation and require less maintenance, making them ideal for homes where noise is a concern. Centrifugal fans are the quietest option and work well in homes with limited attic space, though they’re typically more expensive.

Modern whole house fans often include features like automatic shutters that close when the fan isn’t running, helping prevent air leakage during winter months. Some models incorporate smart controls that can be programmed to operate based on indoor and outdoor temperature differentials, maximizing efficiency while minimizing energy usage.

Maximizing Effectiveness

To get the most benefit from your whole house fan, proper operation is essential. The system works best when outdoor temperatures are at least 5-10 degrees cooler than indoor temperatures. Opening windows on the lowest floor and ensuring upper-level windows remain closed creates the most effective airflow pattern. Running the fan during cooler evening and early morning hours, then closing the house up during the heat of the day, helps maintain comfortable temperatures throughout the day.

Regular maintenance, including cleaning the fan blades and checking the motor, ensures optimal performance and longevity. Most whole house fans require minimal upkeep, making them a low-maintenance cooling solution.

Conclusion

Whole house fan installation represents a smart investment for homeowners seeking to reduce energy costs while maintaining comfort during summer months. With proper sizing, professional installation, and strategic operation, these systems can provide significant cooling benefits at a fraction of the cost of traditional air conditioning. As energy prices continue to rise, whole house fans offer an increasingly attractive path to lower utility bills and enhanced home comfort.

100 Deadliest Days Hit Utah Roads

The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day — known as the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer” — is marked by a sharp rise in fatal car accidents.

On average, fatal crashes are 45% more frequent during the “100 Deadliest Days” than at any other time of year. In Utah alone, 101 people were killed on the roads during that stretch last year, averaging nearly one death per day.

Impact on Utah roads

With approximately 96.1% of Utah households owning at least one vehicle, reliance on cars for daily travel is widespread.

Between May 21 and July 17, the University of Utah’s Daily Crime and Fire Log recorded 55 traffic-related incidents, mostly occurring in the afternoon and primarily on the main campus and health sciences campus.

From 2019 to 2023, the top five crash factors in Utah included drugs, speed, lack of safety measures, motorcycles and elderly drivers.

Nationwide in 2021, drivers under 20 made up about 5% of licensed drivers but accounted for 8.5% of those involved in fatal crashes and 12.6% in all crashes. Teens are 20% more likely to be involved in fatal car crashes during the “100 Deadliest Days.”

Due to school not being in session, many teens and students with vehicles spend more time on the road in the summer months. Recent data shows 2,897 fatalities involved teen drivers, with 860 occurring during the “100 Deadliest Days.”

State troopers visiting rural Utah high schools in early summer identified teen drivers — especially in rural areas — as a central factor in crashes.

How to stay safe

According to The Daily Universe, approximately 94% of crashes are caused by human error. These include behaviors such as speeding, aggressive driving, impairment and failure to follow basic safety regulations like wearing seatbelts.

The Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) advises drivers to take responsibility for their actions behind the wheel, stating on its website: “Crashes aren’t accidents.”

Preventable behaviors that increase the risk of crashes include aggressive driving, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, failing to wear a seat belt, drowsy driving and distractions — whether from digital devices or other sources that divert attention from the road.

“Do the small things – buckle up, put your phone down and obey the speed limit,” Lt. Jason Kelsey told KSL TV.

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) runs safety campaigns encouraging motorists to drive responsibly and stay safe on the roads. They cite the top four leading causes for all crashes: following too closely, failing to yield right of way, driving too fast for the conditions and making unsafe lane changes.

UDOT reported that 12 people died on Utah’s roads last week — the worst one-week total in almost two years. Up-to-date data on crash-related deaths can be found on the Zero Fatalities website.

In a statement from UDOT and DPS, Utah Highway Patrol Colonel Michael Rapich warned Utahns of the consequences of unsafe driving behaviors.

“Too many people on our roads are losing their lives because of actions that can be prevented,” Rapich said.
