No. 1 Oregon dominates Michigan 38-17 in Ann Arbor

“I think everybody in the nation needs to recognize what kind of quarterback we got. He’s a really really special player,” Oregon head coach Dan Lanning said after his squad’s 38-17 victory at defending national champions Michigan.

He’s referring to the 294 yard, two total touchdown day from his star quarterback, Dillon Gabriel.

The visiting Ducks elected to play defense first, forcing the ball into the hands of the lackluster Michigan offense. A 3-and-out lasting just under two minutes ensued, giving Oregon the opportunity to give the ball to its playmakers early on.

Oregon started its offensive attack with three straight screen passes which totaled 26 yards and set up two 1st downs. The Ducks did not slow down there.

After a methodical march downfield, including 7/7 passing from Dillon Gabriel, the Ducks punched it in. Gabriel found Evan Stewart on a fade route to the back left corner of the endzone, and Stewart fought  off contact to make the catch and break the ice.

Another Michigan 3-and-out followed, capped off by a Davis Warren fumble caused by his own lineman. The stop was one of seven of Oregon’s tackles for losses on the day. However, disaster struck on the ensuing punt.

Due to a shoulder injury sustained by receiver and primary returner Tez Johnson, Ryan Pellum dropped back to return the kick. Pellum caught it and made a move, but in the process he lost the ball. The Wolverines pounced on it and gifted themselves an opportunity to start fresh in Oregon territory.

“I don’t really have any details on that right now. He wasn’t able to come back in the game,” Lanning said about Johnson’s injury.

Michigan took that opportunity in stride and tied the game up with a seven-yard strike to Tyler Morris.

The Ducks responded quickly with a two-minute, 75 yard touchdown drive that ended in a Noah Whittington punch-in from the 1-yard line. The one-yarder was set up by the 20-yard dump off to Terrance Ferguson, on which he was mere inches away from scoring.

The Wolverines’ failure to get the offense moving gave Oregon the ball back right away. The Ducks’ steady offense dominated its way to another touchdown and the first multi-score lead of the game.

It happened on another long throw, short punch into the endzone combination.

Gabriel unloaded a missile down the right sideline to Traeshon Holden for 38-yards and set the Ducks up at the six. Just 19 seconds later, Whittington strutted in for his second score of the day and a 21-7 lead for Oregon.

Holden, who has seen limited action recently, continued making plays. Gabriel found Holden over the middle for a 44-yard catch over the middle, which included him making a Michigan defensive back fall down after a nifty juke move. He finished with 149 receiving yards on just six receptions.

“I’m not surprised, this is how [Holden’s] been practicing,” Gabriel said. “You see three weeks ago and you see now, just growth and a guy who’s wanting to be better. I’m extremely proud of him, and I have a bunch of belief in him as a player and a person.”

The next play would have easily been the most exceptional of the game if not for an illegal man downfield penalty. Gabriel, with all the time in the world, threw one to the back of the endzone, supposedly out of play, but Stewart jumped up, grabbed it with one hand and got two feet down for an unreal catch. Alas, that 34-yard wonder-touchdown was taken off the board.

Gabriel was still able to tack onto the Ducks’ lead before the end of the half. Iapani Laloulu cleared a huge gap for Gabriel, leading to an incredibly smart scramble through the middle for a 23-yard score on the ground.

The first half ended 28-10.

The second half started as badly as it could have for Oregon. Michigan’s defense forced a 3-and-out, which led to a 75-yard Wolverine drive that ended in a Warren dart to Peyton O’Leary to move the Ducks’ lead to two scores.

Michigan’s offense consistently stemmed from its ability to get the ball into the hands of tight end Colston Loveland, who recorded seven catches for 112 yards on Saturday.

As soon as the Wolverines scored, the home fans returned.

With the crowd behind it, Michigan looked as if it had a route back into the contest and had escaped the routing at hand. The Wolverines thought they forced a punt on 4th down, but they had a man lined up over the long snapper, which resulted in a five-yard penalty and a 1st down for Oregon.

The Ducks couldn’t convert on the mistakes, as they settled for an Atticus Sappington 26-yard field goal to extend the lead to 31-17.

Following the field goal, each team could only generate small pockets of offense until Michigan strung together a few 1st downs and had the Ducks on their heels.

The character of that drive became a physical 26-yard run by Alex Orji, who broke multiple tackles to get into the redzone halfway through the 4th quarter.

The Wolverines could only gain five more yards that possession and turned it over on downs, which effectively ended the game.

“In the first half we did a really good job of establishing our run defense. We gave up a couple explosives in past games, just bad eyes…but overall I feel like we’re growing each week as a defense,” safety Kobe Savage said.

The effort from Oregon stayed relentless and didn’t end until the final whistle, which is incredibly important in matchups such as this one. The Ducks waddled into the Big House, did their job and now they move on as one of the nation’s only undefeated teams.

Oregon returns home to Eugene next Saturday against the struggling Maryland Terrapins (4-4, 1-4 Big Ten) at 4:00 p.m.

Week 10 preview: Cougars face No. 17 Kansas State

Houston Defensive back Kriston Davis (17) and defensive back Kentrall Webb (8) celebrate with a mid-air body bump during the first half of an NCAA college Football game, Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024, in Houston. | Raphael Fernandez/The Cougar

The Houston Cougars have their sights set on a marquee matchup against No. 17 Kansas State this weekend.

This will be the Cougars’ second consecutive game at TDECU Stadium, and it presents an opportunity for Houston to get past the .500 plateau at home for the first time this season.

Ten unanswered fourth-quarter points in a come-from-behind fashion gave Houston the 17-14 victory against Utah on Oct. 26, but it will take a more concerted effort to get another win against the tough opponent.

Eyes on the air attack

Through his first two starts against TCU and Utah, sophomore quarterback Zeon Chriss has gone 21-31 through the air for three touchdowns and one interception. He’s also showcased his dual-threat ability, rushing for a combined 142 yards in those two games, though Utah held him to 2.6 yards per carry.

There was a clear emphasis on running the football against Utah, as Houston had four players with at least eight carries. The 228-yard rushing was good for the Cougars’ second-best offensive output on the ground this season.

As proficient as Houston was in the ground game, this will be a matchup that may call for Chriss to deliver more as a passer. The Kansas State Wildcats’ defense has held opponents to 96.8 rushing yards per game, 19.1 less than the next closest team. In their last three games, their opponents have averaged only 3.3 yards per carry.

Kansas State’s passing defense has shown vulnerability, particularly on the road. They have allowed opponents to complete 68.03% of passes to be caught away from home.

Chriss has displayed the ability to be crisp throwing the football, going 15-18 for a touchdown in Houston’s 30-19 victory against TCU on Oct. 4.

Red Zone redemption

Amplified by the quarterback carousel and inconsistency at the position, Houston currently holds the worst red zone scoring percentage in college football at 53.3%. Against Utah, the Cougars had two drives go by the wayside in the red zone for no points, further highlighting an issue that has plagued the team all year.

“The teams that score touchdowns in the red zone have got a high win percentage,”  said head coach Willie Fritz. “That’s a pretty clear-cut path to victory if you can score touchdowns instead of field goals down there.”

Part of what has hurt the Cougars in that regard has also been miscommunications and missed assignments on offense. Houston ran four plays from the 1-yard line against Utah that didn’t amount to anything, which cannot happen against the Wildcats, where scoring will be even more imperative.

There is some slight room for optimism; however, despite the numerous shortcomings against Utah, Houston has still seen a 10% increase in red zone efficiency in their last three games. It’s still far from where the Cougars would want the numbers to be, but it does indicate that progress is being made.

A formidable opponent

The Kansas State Wildcats will enter Saturday’s matchup ranked 17th in the country, making them Houston’s third-ranked opponent of the year. Their only loss this season came at the hands of BYU, who would make the college football playoffs if things ended today.

Since that 9-38 defeat on the road, they’ve strung together a four-game winning streak, averaging nearly 37 points per game.

The Wildcats are led by sophomore quarterback Avery Johnson, who during this winning streak, has thrown 10 touchdowns to only two interceptions.

On the season he’s thrown for 1,624 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also happens to be their second-leading rusher, with 373 rushing yards.

Kansas State is one of the most adept teams when it comes to running the football, as their 214.7 rushing yards per game is the ninth most of any team in the nation.

Fritz is aware of the firepower Kansas State brings to the table, “They got two outstanding runningbacks and an outstanding quarterback who can run the ball as well,” he said.

Standout junior running back DJ Giddens has run for 945 yards this season, with a very efficient 6.5 yards per carry. However, he has not been featured much in the end zone, scoring only 4 touchdowns to this point.

Sophomore wide receiver Jayce Brown has been Johnson’s primary target all year long and is an explosive play waiting to happen with his 17.3 yards per catch.

The Wildcats have three players with receptions of 50 yards or more this season, and it is something Houston will have to plan for this Saturday.

At this juncture of the season, most teams have established identities at both sides of the ball, and that was reiterated by Fritz regarding the approach against Kansas State.

“You are what you are right now. We’ll tweak things, and make minor adjustments like they will,” said Fritz.

The Cougars made a bid for an upset against a ranked team on Sept. 7 when they nearly defeated the then-ranked Oklahoma Sooners. If Houston can pull one off this week, it’ll be one of the bigger stunners of the season, as they’ll enter the game as 13-point underdogs.

Houston will aim for their first victory against a ranked team as a member of the Big 12 when the game kicks off Nov. 2 at 2:30 p.m.

Cross Country Earns MIAA Athletes of the Week

David Sheets reporter

The Pitt State men’s and women’s cross-country teams traveled almost 600 miles southeast to compete in the University of Alabama Huntsville Chargers Invitational, where both teams would finish in a top 3 placement with the women’s team finishing first overall. The number 16 ranked women’s team would claim the 6,000-meter race title with a low score of 62, beating 2nd place Chico State by five points.

“It was a really solid team performance from both the men and the women, especially the women bringing home the victory,” head coach, Ben Barrows said. “I thought it was possible that the women could win but not very likely knowing Chico State is a very strong program, but our women packed it up really well and came out on top.”

Redshirt senior, Kate Strader, was one of two Gorillas to be named MIAA Athlete of the week as she would pace the Gorillas, placing 4th with a time of 21 minutes, 3.4 seconds, this being her third straight race leading her team.

“Honestly, I couldn’t have those accolades without my coach and my teammates pushing me. It’s an honor, but it’s not just what I’m doing. There’s been people that have helped me along the way to get me to where I’m at,” Strader said.

Along with Strader, redshirt senior Marissa Dick would place 10th with a time of 21 minutes, 19 seconds, sophomore Paige Mullen would place 17th with a time of 21 minutes, 32.8 seconds, and redshirt senior Claire Bruening would place 20th with a score of 21 minutes, 34.9 seconds.

In the men’s 8,000-meter race, Pitt State would place third with a low score of 116, finishing behind Alabama Huntsville with a score of 92 and Chico State with a score of 45. Grad student Matthew Oglesby would pace the Gorillas as he finished 6th with a time of 23 minutes, 58.5 seconds, as he would join Kate Strader as being named MIAA Athlete of the Week.

“Cross country is a big team sport, and it feels good to be a part of such a great program and help lead it to success. Getting those accolades is always fun and I’m honored to have been the athlete of the week, so hopefully we can keep that ball rolling,” Oglesby said. This was the first race of the season for Oglesby, as he has been sidelined for the majority of the season recovering from a stress reaction in his left tibia.

“I didn’t know what to expect with that race, but when you’re racing cross country, it’s about trusting your training and being calm and confident. As I was preparing for it, I just really had to trust what I’ve been doing, eat the right stuff, hydrate, and just get ready mentally for the race,” Oglesby said.

Redshirt sophomore, Dylan Sprecker, would follow close behind Oglesby as he placed 7th with a time of 23 minutes, 59.2 seconds, and grad student Mason Strader would place 30th with a time of 24 minutes, 38.3 seconds.

Tyler, the Creator’s ‘CHROMAKOPIA’ Simply Rocks

On Oct. 28, Monday morning, Tyler, The Creator dropped his sixth album, “CHROMAKOPIA,” including 14 tracks

The album shows its separation from Tyler’s previous album, “Call Me If You Got Lost,” by its drill sergeant aesthetic presented by Tyler through the music, music video visuals and stage performance.

Easter Eggs And Anticipation

A promotional video released by Tyler on Oct. 16 informed fans of the upcoming album release. The video titled, “ST CHROMA” shows a line of hidden figures marching in a row, seeming to be led by Tyler himself.

Fans speculated that these people marching were possible collaborations on the album such as Frank Ocean, Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar. Although those were not quite the collaborations that were featured on the album, there are some exciting names included such as Sexyy Red, Childish Gambino and Daniel Caesar

On the eve of album release day, Tyler hosted an album listening party at Los Angeles’s Intuit Dome. He let the album play while marching on stage in a military-like fashion for a number of fans and celebrities in attendance including Kendall Jenner, Steve Lacy and Kim Kardashian

Track-list Talk

The album begins with “St. Chroma,” featuring Daniel Caesar, and perfectly introduces this new era to fans. “Rah Tah Tah,” and “Noid,” tracks two and three follow as seamless rap tracks.

A track that is causing confusion and speculation amongst fans is track five, “Hey Jane.” The song is split into two verses, the first from what seems to be Tyler’s perspective to Jane, and the second verse vice versa.

In the first verse Tyler says, “And you don’t know all of me, how am I to live with? That is not a good foundation to have kids with.” This song has led fans to wonder if Tyler has a secret child or what the reasoning is behind his theme of parenthood on the album.

Track six, “I Killed You,” presents a new sound for Tyler by beginning the track with a classic acoustic guitar, followed by bongos.

A personal favorite of mine is track seven, “Judge Judy,” featuring Childish Gambino, because the beats remind me of “Call Me If You Get Lost.”

Probably the most notable song on the album is, “Sticky,” featuring Sexyy Red, GloRilla and Lil Wayne. Its classic hip hop beats and powerful verses delivered by these features make it a competitor for the best track on the album.

The 14 track long album comes to a close with, “I Hope You Find Your Way Home,” and Tyler softly chanting “Chromakopia.”

The Creator

Tyler, The Creator, known for his unique sound and production, shows time and time again his genius creative direction. Each of his albums consistently provides the audience with a familiar sound but transporting us into its new aesthetics and vibe of the album.

New roster additions have Falcons soaring high

After a shaky start, the Atlanta Falcons finally appear to be on the path to normalcy. They currently lead the NFC South with a 5-3 record after Week 8 and appear to have found a groove with new additions in quarterback Kirk Cousins and head coach Raheem Morris. The Falcons fan base experienced a nasty shock when the team came out flat in a tough loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers during the season opener. The poor performance of Cousins, who looked rusty in his return from a torn Achilles tendon, was an unfortunate sub-plot of the early part of the season.  Fortunately, they have rebounded nicely, albeit stumbling against the Kansas City Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks.

After the loss to the Steelers, the Falcons made a statement against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. Cousins, who has 33 game winning drives in his career, stepped up once again when the team needed him most. The Falcons quarterback marched the Falcons down the field, connecting with wide receiver Darnell Mooney and tight end Kyle Pitts, to get the Falcons into the redzone. Wide receiver Drake London capped off the drive with a clutch touchdown catch to put the Falcons up 22-21 with 34 seconds left in the game. Safety Jessie Bates III iced the game with an interception and secured the Falcons’ first win of the season. The win put the Falcons on the national radar.

After the thrilling win against the Eagles, the Falcons lost to the Chiefs in a close game where they had no answer for Kansas City receiver Rashee Rice. The Dirty Birds put that game behind them by winning three games in a row against divisional opponents to propel them to the top of the division. Morris has given the Falcons new hope and swagger that has reverberated throughout the team. To borrow a line from Atlanta rapper Bankroll Fresh referenced by Cousins, the Falcons want to be a team that will “walk in your trap and take over your trap.”

Under offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, the Falcons offense is currently ranked seventh in yards per game with 371.6. Robinson has unlocked the talent of his skill players that was previously underutilized under the old regime. Already one of the best at his position, running back Bijan Robinson is on pace for more scrimmage yards than last year as he ranks fourth in the NFL in combined rushing and receiving yards. He finished fifth in Rookie of the Year voting last season and is capable of  taking another step forward as the engine of the team’s offense. Pitts struggled in recent seasons, but this season has restored the productive form he showed as a rookie Pro Bowler. Like Pitts, London struggled last year in an offense with a middling passing attack, but is now leading  the team in receiving yards. Mooney, who previously floundered with the Chicago Bears, has become a reliable third receiver option for Cousins. Cousins, after a rough first start, has been a revelation for the Falcons. He currently ranks third in passing yards with 2106 among all quarterbacks and set a new Falcons franchise record for passing yards in a game with 509 in a win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

While the Falcons’ defense is not a smothering force by any means, they have been an average unit that can come up with critical stops when it matters most. The safety duo of Justin Simmons and Bates III anchor the defense. Their high-level play has been critical in the Falcons standing in the top-10 for interceptions forced. Despite being a prolific ball hawking team, the unit is still  middling when it comes to stopping the  pass, ranking 18th league-wide in passing yards conceded per game. The real concern for the defense is their inability to  create pressure on the quarterback — even with the addition of Pro Bowl pass rusher Matthew Judon, Atlanta’s six sacks as a team ranks last in the NFL.

On special teams, they remain excellent with good performances from kicker Younghoe Koo and punter Bradley Pinion. Koo has already hit one  game-winning field goal and is  16 for 20 on the season. Punter Bradley Pinion has recorded just one touchback this season, showcasing his pin-point accuracy.

After a strong start, the Falcons will need to persevere during a challenging second half if they want to break their postseason drought. This Sunday, Atlanta takes on a Dallas Cowboys team that is strong on paper, but tends to wilt when pressed into challenging games. In their next eight games, they have five matchups against teams currently with winning records: the Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota Vikings, Washington Commanders and Cowboys. The Falcons will not be favored in all of those games, but they should be battle-tested if they are able to etch out a postseason berth. .

Even though they are currently atop the NFC South, they will have to finish strong in order to hold onto the lead and play for a top seed in the conference. If the defense can generate more pressure while Cousins and the offense maintain a strong level of consistency, this could be a formidable team in this season’s playoffs.

Malaya Jones goes ‘turbo mode’ as CSU volleyball sweeps match, series against UNLV

Sometimes Malaya Jones gets a little tingle; coach Emily Kohan calls that turbo mode.

Jones going turbo mode usually spells doom for her opponents, and Thursday night doom was spelled UNLV. In a sweep (25-21, 25-11, 25-22), CSU finished 6-0 across all sets against the Rebels on the season.

Jones’ night ended with her collecting a seventh double-double on the season finishing with 15 kills and 10 digs. Jones played hyper-efficient volleyball hitting .484 on the night, while attacking 31 times, more than double the next closest number of attacks by a Ram, which was 13.

“Not every game is going to be like that,” Jones said. “So when I can feel that little tingle, I’m like ‘oh, I’ve got to really ride with this one.’”

Kohan said Jones gets a look on her face, and from there it might as well be game over.

When someone of Jones’ caliber steps on to the court, sometimes the incredible play can go underappreciated, because of how often it happens. But Jones’ greatness is not lost on Kohan.

“No, I think we appreciate it,” Kohan said. “And every once in a while, teams kind of get a beat on her and we also have the other people — that I think we’ve shown in other matches that other people can step up. … I feel very lucky that we’ve got a bunch of people that on any given night can be the one to lead the box score.”

The Rams have now won 12 of their last 13 sets going back to the first time they swept UNLV. Kohan has stood strong on the fact that November is the month where CSU has to play its best volleyball.

With that time at the doorstep, things feel like they’ve clicked for the Rams. Still, the peak is a few steps away.

“We can always improve, there’s always things we can do better,” Emery Herman said. “But I think we have a really good chemistry going right now and we’re flowing really well together, so I’m just excited to see the rest of the season as we continue.”

Although the last four matches CSU has played have been against the bottom three teams in the Mountain West, Kohan still feels like her squad is playing good volleyball.

The lone set the Rams lost was to New Mexico, in Albuquerque and tallied 25-27. That’s also a game in which CSU held the Lobos to just .092 hitting. A sign of a good squad oftentimes is dominating lesser opponents, and clearly CSU has done that.

“Tonight we played really good volleyball on our side, regardless of who’s on the other side,” Kohan said. “And that’s what we talk about — UNLV came out strong, we had to climb back in that first set and I was really proud of their composure. … I think it’s maybe a combination of (playing the bottom three teams and things clicking), but again, I’m really proud of the way we did on our side.”

In each of those games, they’ve held their opponent to hitting less than 19%. A big emphasis in practice has been how scrappy the Rams play.

All night long someone dove to the floor, through the announcers table or into the stands with zero hesitation. The Rams are No. 1 in the conference, and that’s not something that’s going to be easy for someone else to take with just seven games left in the regular season.

“The number of times in Moby Arena is winding down and I think those seniors are feeling that a little bit,” Kohan said. “And they want to do a good job leaving a legacy with the crowd in the way that they lead this court, but digging it one game at a time and still trying to get better.”

On Saturday the Rams get to defend their home court taking on San Diego State, a team that reverse swept them earlier in the year.

Whether Jones goes turbo mode again or one of CSU’s other fronts takes over, everyone’s looking for just a little taste of revenge.

“Oh yeah, for sure,” said Herman, about ramping up for Saturday’s game. “We don’t want to lose any game, but especially ones we’ve lost before. We’re going to come back even harder.”

SJP holds march and rally from Johnson to EMU

University of Oregon’s Students for Justice in Palestine organized a march and rally today, starting at Johnson Hall and ending in the Erb Memorial Union Amphitheater.

Protesters began outside of Johnson Hall, which they unofficially named “Alareer Hall,” and moved into the first floor of the EMU to the Fishbowl and ended their protest inside the EMU Amphitheater.

SJP Co-director Salem Younes, SJP Co-director Salem Khoury and a member of SJP gave speeches in which they addressed their want for divestment of the university’s fund, the ongoing attacks in the Israel-Hamas war and performed a demonstration in the Fishbowl where protestors began to lie on the floor to commemorate the Palestinians who have passed away.

“So much money comes from our university to bombs and weapons,” Younes said. “Your tuition is murdering people overseas…Nothing more should outrage you. You are paying to learn and instead, they’re taking your money to teach half-ass classes and kill people.”

At 2:15 p.m., the protestors marched to the first floor of the EMU and Younes gave a speech focused on the recent attacks by Israel in Lebanon and the ban that Israel had put on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.

“[The UNRWA] is the unsanctioned support group supposedly for Palestinian people and the very organization that created the state of Israel,” Younes said. “This should tell you about the genocidal power that the leaders in Israel believe that they hold and are letting on to the world.”

Protestors then began to march to the Fishbowl at 2:25 p.m. where they lay on the ground to resemble dead bodies while Younes and two members of SJP recited chants in Arabic.

A UOPD officer arrived on the scene at 2:32 p.m. and observed the demonstration.

The protestors then began to march to the Amphitheater where Khoury gave a speech about the university’s funds to Israel, the UNRWA and their departure from the UO to Portland State University, beginning next week.

“I tried going to this university, I tried. Not only was the administration heavily racist, heavily bigoted, I was taught anything other than the truth in my classes,” Khoury said. “But it ultimately failed me and many other Palestinians.”

Khoury emphasized that they and the protestors will not back down until “the struggle is lifted.”

“We will be here until the struggle is lifted and Palestinians can recollect themselves and reform a society,” Khoury said. “We will never back down, we will never bow our heads and we will never say yes to occupation.”
