Five incoming Gophers drafted for the NHL

Five upcoming Gophers men’s hockey players have already been selected during the 2025 Upper Deck NHL Entry Draft.

During the NHL Entry Draft, players are drafted by an NHL team, but they do not always immediately join the team after being drafted. In some cases, the players go back to their junior team, college or European league.

This allows players to have the opportunity to continue developing their skills and playing style before joining the pros. While these five players were already drafted, they will still be seen playing at Mariucci Arena for the 2025-2026 season.

The first of the future Gophers selected was Jacob Rombach. He was drafted 35th overall by the Nashville Predators.

Rombach played two full seasons in the United States Hockey League. He appeared in 116 games over two years and ranked third on his team in total points with 18 last season.

Rombach also helped Team USA win gold at the 2024 World Junior A Challenge. In high school, Rombach played for Spring Lake Park/Coon Rapids, where he finished with 19 points in 26 games as a sophomore.

During the third round of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, two more future Gophers were called. Mace’o Phillips went 80th by the Calgary Flames, and Mason Moe went 90th to join the New Jersey Devils.

Phillips played with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program for two years. He played in 60 games with the U18s last season, where he scored six points.

Phillips’ physical playing style led to him leading his team in penalty minutes both years he played for USNTDP. Phillips also helped Team USA win bronze at the 2025 International Ice Hockey Federation U18 World Championships.

Prior to the IIHF World Championships, Phillips helped Team USA win gold in the 2024 U17 Five Nations Tournament. Phillips played prep hockey at Benilde-St. Margaret’s where he had 21 points in 27 games, his sophomore year.

Moe played parts of two seasons with the Sioux Falls Stampede USHL.

Moe totaled 63 games, scoring 17 goals and recording 26 assists for a total of 43 points during the 2024-2025 season. His strengths are seen offensively during power plays, where Moe was able to score 12 power-play points.

Moe joined Rombach in helping Team USA win gold in the 2024 World Junior A Challenge. In high school, he played at Eden Prairie High School and led the team in scoring his sophomore year with 40 points in 27 games.

The final two Gophers drafted were LJ Mooney in the fourth round, going 113th to the Montreal Canadiens and Jacob Kvasnicka in the seventh round, going 202nd to the New York Islanders.

Much like Phillips, Mooney spent two years at the USNTDP and appeared in 112 games. During the 2024-2025 season, he made a total of 51 points in 51 games for the U18 team.

He ranked fifth in scoring and finishing with several multi-point performances. Mooney also helped Team USA win bronze in the 2025 IIHF World Championships and gold in the 2024 U17 Five Nations Tournament.

Before joining the USNTDP, Mooney developed his skills through the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite AAA program from 2020 to 2023.

Kvasnicka was also a part of the USNTDP from 2023 to 2025.

He had a total of 39 points in 66 games, made up of 18 goals and 21 assists. He ranked sixth in his team in scoring and even scored five points in one game against Czechia.

Kvasnicka helped represent Team USA in the IIHF 2025 World Championship and scored five points in seven games.

He played for Wayzata High School and, as a freshman, had a total of 45 points in 28 games. He helped his team reach the Section 6AA title game.

These five Gophers will be seen on the ice at the start of the 2025-2026 season on October 3 and 4.

Roadless Rule Cut Fuels Fire Risk

As summer reaches its peak, the wildfire season is blazing across the West. On June 19, the Forsyth Fire raged through Dixie National Forest in Southern Utah, posing yet another threat to the state’s vulnerable landscapes.

At the same time, experts warn that the danger could escalate further if key federal protections are rolled back. One of those measures in particular — the Roadless Area Conservation rule — may soon be on the chopping block.

Roadless Rule

In 2001, the United States Forest Service established the Roadless Rule, a policy that prohibits road construction and harvesting resources in national forests. It conserves almost 59 million acres of land across the United States.

At the annual Western Governors Association meeting in New Mexico on June 23, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke L. Rollins announced the Trump Administration‘s hope to get rid of the policy.

If this rule is successfully repealed, millions of acres of land will be eligible for road building and logging. This land includes almost 60% of Utah’s forest service land.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, who was in attendance at the Western Governors Association meeting, supported Sec. Rollins’ announcement.

“UDSA is ending the burdensome Roadless Rule – a 25-year obstacle to responsible forest management,” Cox said in a statement on X. “That’s a huge win for wildfire prevention and the health of our lands.”

In the United States Department of Agriculture’s press release of the event, Gov. Cox explains that the Roadless Rule has blocked the government from accessing millions of acres of forest. Removing this rule, he said, will be a “critical step” toward healing Utah’s forests.

Public Opinion

While Utah’s governor described the removal of the Roadless Rule as a positive step, many disagree.

The Center for Western Priorities, a nonpartisan conservation organization, released a statement regarding the ramifications of the policy revocation.

“It’s ridiculous for Secretary Rollins to spin this as a move that will reduce wildfire risk or improve recreation,” the organization’s Policy Director Rachael Hamby said. “Commercial logging exacerbates climate change, increasing the intensity of wildfires.”

She described the repeal as an “attack” on public lands and Western communities.

“This is nothing more than a massive giveaway to timber companies at the expense of every American and the forests that belong to all of us,” Hamby said.

A study conducted by Sean Healey, a researcher at the Rocky Mountain Research Station, confirms that the roadless forest areas do not burn any differently than areas with roads. This contrasts Sec. Rollins claims that the rescinding of the Roadless Rule will help prevent wildfires and increase environmental integrity.

Implications

In an interview with the Salt Lake Tribune, University of Oregon professor James Johnston explained how more roads could potentially lead to more wildfires.

“It’s easier to corral fires when there’s a road system to facilitate direct attack with hand crews and bulldozers,” he said, referencing his 2021 study about wildfire frequency.

Furthermore, the repeal could also affect the national budget. The USDA reported that disbanding the policy could create a 25% decrease in economic development in the forestry sector.

Despite this, Cultural Landscapes Director for Grand Canyon Trust Tim Peterson raised concerns about road construction and maintenance costs.

“Road building is so expensive, and the forest service already has a maintenance backlog,” Peterson said to the Utah News Dispatch. “We can’t even maintain the roads that we have, let alone build new roads.”

How Willie Fritz is looking to elevate Houston in year two

Houston football head coach Willie Fritz speaks to the team after practice on Saturday, April 12, 2025, in Houston, Texas | Joshua Braggs/The Cougar

When Houston football’s head coach Willie Fritz spoke to reporters Wednesday morning as part of Big 12 media days, he arrived as a second-year man, more familiar and comfortable with the program he took over in December of 2023.

Despite going 4-8 in his first Big 12 season, the 12 games showed his vision for the program, but the year also reminded him of how challenging succeeding can be in the conference.

“The Big 12 is a fantastic conference, and everybody is pretty good,” Fritz said.

Fritz is well-travelled in his now 32 years of head coaching experience, having been a part of five conferences before joining Houston, but his sixth allows for even fewer days off, and punishes off-days like no league before it.

“There were some games where maybe you brought your C-game, and you still were able to win. That’s not the case in our league,” Fritz said. “Everybody’s good, top-to-bottom.”

Houston’s next step toward competing for a conference title started with this offseason’s internal competition among key position groups, a luxury the program lacked last year.

“One guy was kind of going to start for us no matter what. Now we’re going to have to use our first two or three games to figure out exactly who is going to be playing and how much they’re going to be playing.”

Despite his familiarity with the city of Houston dating back decades, Fritz spent his first offseason getting acclimated to the school while working with what he already had on his roster, leaving little time for recruiting.

One year later, Fritz is confident with the talent and depth he has assembled, headlined by former Texas A&M quarterback and five-star recruit Conner Weigman.

“He’s been everything I hoped he’d be. He’s a great young man, great leadership abilities,” Fritz said. “We’re just very fortunate to have him in our football program. Just a real, old-fashioned type of quarterback.”

Weigman, now back fully healthy after injury setbacks in seasons past, will have a retooled offensive line to protect him, another group Fritz looked to bolster ahead of the 2025 campaign.

After the spring football game in April, Fritz caught a glimpse of his new offensive line’s potential, calling the unit a “night and day” difference from last year.

A revamped offensive line should allow for better pass protection, but one of the benefits Weigman presents is the dual-threat archetype that’s prevalent in Houston’s quarterback room, and aligns with Fritz and new offensive coordinator Slade Nagle’s visions.

“We like to be a 50-50 team. If you want to win championships, you’ve got to be able to run the football effectively, and Slade certainly understands that,” Fritz said.

Nagle served as his tight end’s coach at Tulane from 2016-21, before becoming assistant head coach in 2022 until Fritz’s departure in 2023.

He then spent 2024 as LSU’s special teams and tight ends coach, which has allowed him to introduce new concepts during the spring that differ from what Fritz had seen at Tulane, while still maintaining a balance between passing and running.

That balance wasn’t present last season, when Houston averaged 152.7 passing yards per game, nearly fifty yards less than second-worst Utah’s 199.4 among the Big 12 and 11th worst nationally.

The starting quarterback seesaw where starts and snaps were traded between Donovan Smith and Zeon Chriss only accentuated the imbalance even more.

But it’s a balance Fritz and his staff know they need to restore heading into year two, where Weigman, Chriss and freshman quarterback Austin Carlisle will get reps throughout a preseason in which Houston will hone its new offensive identity.

“Our slogan this year is Houston. When we break (huddle) it’s 2025 Houston,” Fritz said. “Not 2026, 2027, every team now is going to be its own team.”

The first preseason practice is July 28, with the Cougars kicking off their season in a home matchup against Stephen F. Austin on Thursday, Aug. 28 at TDECU Stadium.

Top Benefits of Digital Signage Software for Your Business

With this constantly changing business landscape, staying ahead of your competitors is a must. The best approach to do this is to use digital signage software. The tool enables businesses to communicate effectively with the audience, providing an interactive way to share information with them. Now, let us look at the important benefits that digital signage software provides.

Enhanced Communication

Smart digital signage can enhance communication by providing information. It instantly lets businesses share announcements, promotions, or other important updates. They guarantee the effective delivery of messages to the right people. Businesses can use bright colors and dynamic content to grab the attention of the audience as well as retain it.

Increased Engagement

One of the most significant advantages of digital signage is interactivity. Customer experience is already changed by touchscreens and interactive displays, making it heaven for engagement. It enables customers to browse products, services, or information on their own time. Such deep interaction leads to greater customer happiness and loyalty, so you can expect them to return.

Cost-Effectiveness

Print and television are costly methods of advertising. Appropriately, digital signage provides a cost-efficient solution. After the initial investment, content updates tend to cost little to nothing. This means businesses can update their displays without any new printing, reducing time and costs.

Flexibility and Customization

Content update is easy with digital signage. Businesses can tailor messages relevant to a wide array of audiences and events. So if it is a sale you promote or share a seasonal greeting, your content can be changed within a few minutes. If the electronics were to change, those messages would remain applicable, which makes them more timely and relevant, as well as less efficient for overall good communication efforts.

Improved Brand Awareness

It is important for your brand to be recognizable, and that is only possible if you keep consistency in the branding across all platforms. This is where digital signage comes to help. It is an effective way for businesses to showcase logos, slogans, and brand colors. Consistent branding will ensure they build their identity into the minds of the consumers, thus building brand awareness.

Real-Time Updates

A major advantage of having digital signage is the capability of providing instant updates. For example, this is useful in places where the information can change frequently, like airports or event venues. This allows businesses to disseminate the most relevant information, with the latest news going out to audiences as quickly as possible.

Increased Sales Opportunities

Digital signage can increase sales by displaying items and promotions directly to the consumer. Attractive displays of featured items intended to lure customers into purchasing products can be placed in heavy-traffic areas, making it easier for these types of businesses to be seen and increase sales.

Environmental Benefits

Digital signage helps the environment. Minimizing the printing of materials would also allow the enterprise to lessen its carbon footprint. This not only helps the planet but also appeals to the increasingly environmentally conscious consumer.

Ease of Management

Managing digital signage is straightforward. Most systems provide an easy-to-use interface for scheduling and managing content. This allows businesses to manage multiple displays at once from one remote location, making things much smoother. This simple integration makes it super easy for businesses to adapt.

Enhanced Customer Experience

It is important to create a pleasant customer experience because that is how businesses grow. Digital signage can help with that by presenting useful data as well as entertainment. Digital signage helps create a better customer experience, from showing waiting time to informing customers with engaging content.

Data Collection and Analysis

Apart from displaying advertisements, digital signage is important to get your strategy as per consumer behavior. Many systems track interactions, giving some information on which content is engaging. This data allows businesses to better understand their audiences and optimize their strategies.

Increased Efficiency

Efficiency has also become crucial for businesses. Automated scheduling of content helps enhance efficiency in digital signage by reducing the need for manual updates and maintenance. This ensures that displays are up to date at all times, freeing up staff to do other things.

Conclusion

Digital signage software provides a myriad of features for business owners looking to improve communication and engagement. The benefits are obvious—from cost savings to enhanced customer experiences. With this addition, companies can remain relevant, create customer loyalty, and engage in sustainable practices. Adopting digital signage will make your business future-proof in a rapidly changing market.

First Amendment concerns arise surrounding international student speech

President Donald Trump’s administration has become widely criticised for its harsh and widespread immigration policies, pushing many international students off of American college campuses and causing distress for those who remain.

At the University of Minnesota, international students are expressing great concern that these immigration policies are limiting their basic rights.

Many international students’ visas have been widely restricted or cancelled by the Trump administration in recent months, in what the administration has called an effort to safeguard national security. These actions, though, have created a fear among international students across America as they had their visas terminated for voicing their political beliefs publicly, according to NBC.

These fears are alive here at the University, according to one international student who chose to remain anonymous due to these concerns.

“Just having the fear that everything you can post politically online will lead to you getting your visa denied,” the student said. “I think that it’s a shame for the U.S. and the university’s reputation in the U.S.”

The international student added that they believe these policies are limiting their First Amendment rights through the fear they create.

“The U.S. always propagates free speech and everything, but he also criticized German politicians for free speech,” they said. “It doesn’t seem to uphold those standards anymore, at least not for international students.”

The fear of international students at the University having their visas revoked is not irrational.

Notably, the University saw Turkish student Doğukan Gunaydin detained by immigration officials in March for nearly two months as a result of a 2023 DWI arrest.

In addition, the Trump administration has paused visa interviews for potential international students as it considers expanding a process for vetting prospective students’ social media presence, according to Politico

Actions like these are why Izham Razak, a recent University graduate and former international student, said Trump and his administration’s actions are controlling international students.

“The tightening role on international students is definitely an authoritative plan being done by the Trump administration,” Razak said. “As long as you are an international student, if you follow the rules and then follow the guidelines, you will not be affected.”

Razak said he, too, is fearful of his social media usage, as he believes any political statements could affect his visa status.

“I would not want to talk about U.S. administration issues because I don’t have a take on that and I don’t want it to jeopardize anything happening in the future, like entering the U.S or leaving the U.S.,” Razak said.

While it has induced fear and controversy, experts say it has not been ruled as government overreach. University law professor Jane Kirtley said ICE is legally allowed to deport international students and prohibit them from entering the U.S. due to their social media posts.

“Immigration can use social media postings as a basis to deport people and to refuse them entry into this country,” Kirtley said. “It’s a contentious issue.”

Kirtley said universities have felt the effects of the Trump administration’s cuts to funding because the administration is deciding whether to act on what it sees as hate speech, especially surrounding pro-Palestinian activism.

“I think the problem is that the Trump administration has been aggressively using things like government funding to threaten universities if they do not take action against students who are engaging in expressive activities that they think are antisemitic,” Kirtley said.

Digital Escapes That Don’t Feel Like a Waste of Time

Many of us know the feeling of losing an hour or two in the algorithm void—especially Gen Z and Millennials. We’re collectively gaining awareness of doomscrolling, “brain-rot” content, and falling down “reel-holes.”

The compulsive ways apps hold attention have become obvious, so self-aware individuals are rethinking screen time and seeking mindful digital escapes that don’t trigger content overload or screen fatigue.

Is spending downtime on screens always a waste, or are there positive cognitive and mood benefits when done mindfully?

The internet is a chaotic ocean, but you can choose your own voyage. Increasingly, we’re able to find experiences that refresh our minds instead of numbing them. Whether you’re a student trying to stay sharp and avoid burnout, or you want to jump off the TikTok train and use downtime more wisely, here are a few digital escapes that don’t feel like time wasters.

Calming Mobile Games That Feel Refreshing

Not all games are built to keep you stuck in a never-ending loop of ads and leveling up. Some are beautifully designed to soothe, entertain, and gently reset your brain. Think: Alto’s Odyssey, Prune, or Monument Valley—these games are visually rich and delightfully crafted like interactive art—far more interesting than the monotony of cartoonish dopamine traps we see everywhere.

These games are thoughtful and contemplative. Instead of stealing cars and shooting your way through a gritty city or mindlessly collecting candies, you can quietly grow trees or glide through desert landscapes on a sandboard. These are not designed to spike adrenaline or bombard your senses. Instead, they’re relaxing for your nervous system. Think of them as a mental palate cleanser—no popups, no loud noises, no brain strain.

Spotify Lets You Craft Your Life’s Soundtrack

For some people, curating music playlists has become a creative outlet in itself, without the need for musical ability. Apps like Spotify make it incredibly intuitive to find what appeals to your mood and build unique playlists with gems you never heard before.

Want a perfect playlist for studying, another for your commute, and one to pump you up on Friday evening? There’s something satisfying about organizing tracks into distinct, accessible emotional worlds. The app is full of organizational help and brilliant suggestions, so compiling your collection is as low effort as it gets.

Listeners view Spotify as a form of self-expression that fits neatly into in-between moments when they’re killing time. Plus, sharing music with friends is a social benefit that makes Spotify feel interactive and connected, with minimal effort or brain power.

Simulation Apps That Let You Be on Top of Your World

Step into a cozy, ideal life with simulation apps that offer control, without the stress of real-life logistics. Stardew Valley is the highest-rated game on Steam with good reason. You can plan and build towns, befriend locals, and grow food without ever worrying about rent or utility bills. There’s no doubt that feeling accomplished and in control virtually spills over to a calmer, more confident mindset in real life.

Goodbudget and Notion offer similar but practical financial and project management help. If you’re a to-do list nerd but your sticky notes are out of hand, these apps can provide a soothingly ordered backdrop for brainstorming, financial management, and skill-building.

Running tiny, perfectly ordered worlds can help take the edge off lives that feel messy and hectic.

Brain Games That Don’t Feel Like Homework

It’s encouraging to see apps like Elevate and Luminosity offer fun ways to boost cognition, memory, and processing. These are designed to be challenging yet never feel like work.

Beginning with an assessment, the apps walk you through personalized games to improve your abilities based on goals—whether it’s math, problem-solving, or attention, the games adapt to your progress. “Brain games” are designed to keep your mind sharp in a way that doesn’t feel taxing or stressful, and you can dip in to play quickly whenever you have time.

They’re a clever life hack for ambitious people who enjoy constantly improving, and their benefits are noticeable with just a few minutes each day.

The Satisfying Rush of Casual Casino Games

No doubt learning is productive, but not only brainy games are worthwhile. Sometimes we need a few quick “wins” solving puzzles, spinning prize wheels, or slots, without thinking hard. Casino-apps offer no-risk incentives and secure gameplay, letting you enjoy the thrill of gaming and winning without putting real money on the line.

For example, platforms with a $200 free chip no deposit bonus available are among the most popular because they let players take a harmless, five-minute mental vacation with built-in rewards. No high stakes, no regrets. Just the dopamine rush you might need to get through the rest of your shift or study session.

Most gaming apps have built-in safety nets: user protections and no deposit requirements. In many cases, the motivation to play isn’t for money but the love of the game and the mood boost that comes with it. If you find flipping cards or spinning wheels therapeutic, go for it!

Mindful Scrolling: Curate Your Feed

It’s easy to assume all social media is a time-waster. It can be—after all, these apps were designed to keep us scrolling, and scrolling, and scrolling. But you may not realize you have more control over feeds than you think. With a little intention, even scrolling can be mentally uplifting.

Follow accounts that share art or thoughtful essays. Follow niche creators who discuss things you care about. You might see rage-bait occasionally, but here’s the key: don’t comment, like, or follow content unworthy of your feed. Curate your algorithm like building a house you want to live in—each design element inspirational, educational, or amusing.

We’re wired to crave information and visual stimulation each day, but choosing your own journey through the social media landscape means being decisive about your attention.

Digital Escapes from Passive Scrolling

It’s easy to get sucked in to passive consumption of random digital content. And to be fair, resting the mind and amusing ourselves with memes, celebrity gossip, news, and even silly brain rot can feel like a much-needed break.

But rest can also be productive. Informative and enlightening content leaves us feeling better than when we opened the app. Little wins, prizes, and unlocking levels can bring a sense of accomplishment.

The trick is choosing digital escapes that replenish energy, calm nerves, and build skills, rather than leaving you frazzled and depleted. Using free time on purpose, even if it’s just a few minutes a day, can help make the most of it.

So, whether you’re spinning a no-risk bonus wheel just for fun, or designing a personal playlist masterpiece, if it makes you feel better, it’s not a waste of time.

Book bans seemingly continue after being prohibited in Minnesota

As of 2024, Minnesota no longer bans books. However, some librarians say book bans are still technically happening.

Minnesota recently prohibited book banning in a 2024 statute, one of several Democratic-leaning states that have recently banned book bans. Some librarians are saying a combined rise in challenges related to interest groups and their fight against LGBTQ+ content as well as a lack of enforcement is leading to challenges against certain books across the state.

University of Minnesota English professor Lianna Farber said book banning is not a law that is enforced, and is a spectrum that gets confused quickly.

“A public library must not ban, remove, or otherwise restrict access to a book or other material based solely on its viewpoint or the messages, ideas, or opinions it conveys,” Farber said.

Books can also be “challenged,” meaning a person or group attempts to remove or restrict materials based upon personal objections, according to the American Library Association.

“Some people would say if a book is removed from the library shelves, that that’s a ban,” Farber said. “At the extreme end, some people say as long as there’s not an actual government action against people who can’t read a book, it’s not a ban.”

Rochester Public Schools ordered “The Rainbow Parade” by Emily Neilson to be removed from shelves earlier this year, overruling a school board meeting decision to keep the book on shelves, according to KTTC

Similarly, a Stillwater community member donated books to an elementary school’s library. Upon unpacking, staff members raised concerns about the books’ content and pulled them for review. Both books contain LGBTQ+ themes and are available to students with parents’ permission, according to Fox 9.

The most common causes for book banning typically include concerns about appropriate content for certain age groups, LGBTQIA themes, sexually explicit content, depiction of drug use and political or religious viewpoints, according to the American Library Association

Book banning is a form of censorship, according to the Free Speech Center. Typically, private individuals, government officials, school districts or organizations remove books from libraries, schools or bookstores because they object to their content, ideas or themes.

Federal and state law

Book bans vary by state. Texas has the most book bans, followed by Florida, Missouri and Utah.

The Supreme Court previously ruled in Island Trees School District v. Pico (1982) that the government cannot restrict speech due to offenses against individual “‘social, political and moral tastes,’” meaning that school officials cannot remove books because of their content.

In Minnesota, the Minnesota statute, 134.51 Access to Library Materials and Rights Protected, protects teachers and librarians from being in trouble for having certain books.

According to the statute, a governing body of a public library must adopt a policy that establishes procedures for selection of, challenges to, and reconsideration of library materials by a licensed specialist, an individual with a master’s degree in library science, a professional librarian or a person trained in library collection management, the statute reads.

In Minnesota, every public library needs a collection development policy and a book challenge policy and procedure, which they refer to when a book challenge occurs.  A collection development policy is a statement of guidelines for library staff members to follow when selecting, acquiring, and building library collections.

“When people challenge books, then you have a policy to go back and say, this is why we collected this book,” Minnesota Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom Committee Chair Ann Kaste said, “It’s representing members of our community.”

Quiet banning and self-censorship

Quiet banning refers to libraries not purchasing certain book titles that they believe may cause conflict and negative reactions from the community.

Kaste said she believes in the freedom to read and the necessity of combating censorship in libraries.

“A form of banning that we’re seeing this year is called quiet banning or self-censorship, where libraries just don’t buy the books that may cause problems,” Kaste said. “They may even remove books that they think may cause trouble.”

Authors may participate in self-censorship practices and modify what they want to write because they don’t want to have a controversy, according to Kaste.

“The American Library Association collects the numbers of book bans per year, and it was way down,” Kaste said. “We are thinking that that is because of quiet censorship.”

According to Kaste, there are special interest groups that convene to make a plan for how to ban books. They make a list of books they disagree with and send it to local groups around the country.

Earlier this year, St. Francis Public Schools settled two book policy lawsuits where the district removed librarians and teachers from the book approval process and replaced them with a website called BookLooks.org.

BookLooks.org reads, “‘We are concerned parents who have been frustrated by the lack of resource material for content-based information regarding books accessible to children and young adults.’”

BookLooks created a rating system meant to be used as a quick guide for parents who want to know more about a certain book’s content.

“You can challenge the books if you don’t like them,” Kaste said. “But the school board can’t come in and make a new system for what goes in the library, because it’s a publicly funded institution.”

The Minnesota American Civil Liberties Union and the Minnesota Educators Association sued St. Francis Public Schools and they ended up dropping their policy of using “Book Looks” to find books for their libraries. Book Looks bans classic books and curriculum-required books such as “Night” by Elie Wiesel, “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood and “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini, according to Kaste.

Student Claire Pitrof took ENGL 1004 – Banned Books, a class offered by the University.

Pitrof is against book bans and believes there are situations where books should have content disclaimers. She believes it is good for parents to be aware of what their kids are reading, so that they can have informed conversations about rough topics. Everyone deserves to read and have access to all of the different opinions that are out there, and form their own opinions and build their own set of morals,” Pitrof said.
