The University will no longer require ID scanning to enter University Park Campus for students, faculty, staff and community members during public operating hours, interim President Beong-Soo Kim said in an interview with the Daily Trojan on Monday. The change could take place as early as Tuesday, Kim said.

The decision walks back a portion of the heightened security and surveillance measures at campus entrances implemented amid the Spring 2024 pro-Palestinian encampment protests. The measures included increased fencing, cameras and security personnel presence — all of which will remain. 

Fencing around Alumni Park and the lawn in front of Bovard Auditorium, which also emerged following the protests, have been removed since the end of June and will remain down unless needed for events, Kim said.

“This approach that we’ve come up with gives us the adaptability to respond very quickly to whatever may happen,” he said. “After reflecting on all of our experience over the last several years and decades, there’s also a real important benefit that comes when the campus can be accessed by members of our broader community.”

In March, an internal email from USC Auxiliary Services confirmed that the University was pursuing a “permanent solution for secure, tent-free access points.” The email also noted that the University developed an “enhanced security perimeter with additional hardware and camera coverage” during Fall 2024.

Kim said the University will continue to employ ID scanning, entrance closures and other stricter security measures on a temporary basis as it deems necessary. The University has closed campus entrances several times in the past due to pro-Palestinian marches and vigils near the gates. The change would also provide some “financial benefit” to the University amid its more than $200 million operating deficit from the 2025 fiscal year, but Kim said finances were not the main driver of the decision. 

The University’s security protocol has been criticized as exclusionary and excessive by some community members. A December 2024 survey of 345 faculty members by USC’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors found that nearly three-quarters of respondents had negative feelings about the security checkpoints. 

The survey noted that a minority of respondents said the checkpoints made them feel safer by preventing what they described as potentially dangerous people and antisemitic protests from entering campus.

Kim said the University will monitor results from the change over the coming months and decide if adjustments are necessary, or if it should return to the prior heightened level of security.

“We’re not going to hesitate to make further changes based on those assessments,” he said.

In the heart of the Minneapolis Como neighborhood, a house with a thumping basement offered refuge and joy to many. It was a venue, but much more than that, it was a lifeline. 

It wasn’t just the live music that made Como Backdoor extraordinary; it was the people. The crowd became part of the performance, shouting encouragement during tech mishaps, forming friendships in the pit, and carrying the energy into post-show nights. 

Its sudden closure following an eviction leaves a void in the music scene and a legacy that continues to reverberate.

Under Iris Bolton’s curation, the space became an epicenter of sapphic expression that transcended the genre lines on the flyers. Whether packed with noise-punk or emo revival, every show carried the imprint of care. 

Bolton, who uses she/they pronouns, inherited the beloved house venue from previous curator Henry Mayer, who had graduated and didn’t have anyone to take over. Bolton reached out, and what began as a simple offer soon became a collaboration.

Mayer passed down logistical advice and emotional support, while Bolton focused on stepping fully into the new role by hosting practice events. 

“I started hosting under my own direction,” Bolton said. “The mission was always about connection — giving people a third space. A home away from home.”

For Bolton, that mission was personal. They had experienced deep discomfort in traditional nightlife spaces, and the idea of curating a venue with softness and safety in the forefront was transformative. 

“I wanted to build a space freshman-year me would have felt safe and happy at,” Bolton said. “That was the guiding principle.”

Como Backdoor hosted roughly one show a week and welcomed around 150 unique artists. 

Lineups were mismatched to encourage curiosity. Punk and emo would play on the same night many times. By pairing different sounds and scenes, Bolton fostered a space where genre bent toward feeling, and every show became an experiment in resonance and care.

“Most bills had four bands and many had new faces,” Bolton said. “It was a very open space.” 

Some of the most formative performers for Bolton included Spiderlily, a four-piece band whose performances embodied the space’s commitment to care, creativity and connection. 

The band is made up of vocalist Emily Wangberg, drummer Linnea Sorensen, bassist Julia Wettschreck and lead guitarist Matteo Sforza. At their core, Spiderlily is a band defined by community, complexity and collaboration. 

Wangberg and Sorensen described their songwriting process as spontaneous, personal and deeply chaotic, but always rooted in trust.

“Everyone has their own style and influences,” Sorensen said. “We all love different artists and genres, so our writing process is just jamming until something clicks — something we all vibe with. It’s never finished until each of us feels good about it.” 

That collaborative method, grounded in mutual respect and variety, makes Spiderlily’s sound feel accidental and intentional all at once, a kaleidoscope of preference, intuition and creativity.

“None of us ever shut up,” Sorensen said. “It’s very sibling-esque. But we know if something ever felt disrespectful, we could talk about it.”

Como Backdoor gave Spiderlily space to fully unlock that dynamic. Their Halloween show, one of the band’s earliest performances, felt like a turning point. 

The basement’s atmosphere made everything click. Before the band even played a note, the crowd was cheering. 

“People were just so excited,” Sorensen said. “It felt like the basement wanted us to succeed.”

Unity was a hallmark of the space. For Bolton, cultivating that energy required vigilance. 

“People knew the expectations going in,” Bolton said. “I wasn’t trying to police the room. I just wanted everyone to know they were protected.”

Bolton took on multiple roles to keep the space secure and intentional, from running logistics to managing the crowd. Her attention to safety wasn’t just about protocols; it was about cultivating a community where care could thrive.

The venue also made space for activism. 

Bolton organized a Monster High Halloween benefit that raised $3,600 for families in Palestine. They also hosted benefit raves for Young Democratic Socialists of America and Students for a Democratic Society. 

Bolton made space for solidarity to coexist with celebration, reminding attendees that joy and politics aren’t opposites, but often necessary collaborators.

Bolton emphasized that her work was grounded in genuine care and intentional visibility, not superficial gestures. She aimed to create pathways for people to engage meaningfully, through art forms or roles that already resonated with them and made them feel complete.”

“I wanted the space to have purpose — to support people beyond the music,” Bolton said.

When Como Backdoor closed, it felt deeply personal. For Bolton, the loss was compounded by its abruptness. 

“The landlord gave no warning. We didn’t even get to say goodbye,” Bolton said.

Still, the spirit persists. Bolton has offered her services to other venues in the area or to anyone wanting to start a venue, including Cvnt House, a new femme and queer venue in Minneapolis. 

“Cvnt House deserves a shout-out,” Bolton said. “They’re carrying the torch, and I want to support them.”

When asked what qualities a space would need to continue this legacy, Bolton said it comes down to two principles: “Build a venue freshman year, you would feel safe at. And believe that queer joy is sacred.” 

Few house venues prioritized large-scale lesbian parties in the way Como Backdoor did. That intention made the venue not just distinct, but necessary. 

“I feel incredibly lucky,” Bolton said. “The music and artists were unforgettable, but I think I’ll miss the community most — the way those parties built something soft and joyful. It was unlike anything else.”

This running boom is not unprecedented; the nation experienced a similar uptick in running 50 years ago, with nearly identical increases in social running and local races. However, that boom occurred in a nation only beginning to witness the slide in social interaction, unmarked by digital isolation. Arguably, the running boom half a century ago came most prominently as a result of increased awareness of fitness, whereas the one in effect comes from a desire for connection in a post-pandemic world. 

Running as the emergent form of social engagement is bizarre, and not merely for its solo nature. It is a tough sport, with a steep curve of improvement and many potential risks for injury. There are seemingly other (perhaps better) ways to initiate that renewal. However, given the circumstances which disincentivize social connection specifically in the younger generation, the surge in running popularity makes sense.

As the professional softball world turns its attention to Salt Lake City this week, it’s more than just another stop on the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) tour — it’s a homecoming.

Several former University of Utah softball stars suited up at Dumke Family Stadium for a high-stakes, four-day series that ran July 16-19. With the league nearing the end of its inaugural season, this local series isn’t just crucial for playoff seeding — it’s a celebration of Utah’s growing influence on the game at the highest level.

From the U to the Pros

Headlining the list of returning alumni is Hannah Flippen, arguably the most decorated player in Utah softball history. A three-time All-American and Pac-12 Player of the Year, Flippen now plays professionally for the Talons, one of AUSL’s top teams.

Joining her in the series is fellow Utah alum Anissa Urtez, who plays for the Blaze. Urtez, a four-year starter for the Utes from 2014 to 2017, gained international acclaim when she represented Team Mexico at the Tokyo Olympics and hit the country’s first-ever home run in Olympic softball history.

Former UH Assistant Director of Debate Eric Lanning has filed a civil lawsuit, alleging he was wrongfully terminated in retaliation for reporting student safety issues, discriminatory language and unpaid reimbursements.

The lawsuit alleges the following statutory and contractual violations: Texas Whistleblower Act (Gov’t Code ch. 554), Title IX Retaliation (20 U.S.C. § 1681), Texas Payday Act and Fair Labor Standards Act (Lab. Code ch. 61; 29 U.S.C. § 216), Defamation and Declaratory & Injunctive Relief.

Student safety, language concerns

In court documents, Lanning and student debate team members allege that Coach Sherry Hall drove a student while intoxicated under the instruction of Director of Debate at the Honors College Robert Glass. Lanning also reported that Hall used the transphobic slur “tr***y” toward a competitor during the National Debate Tournament in April and continued to refer to the student as “it.” 

In a separate incident at the same tournament, a student’s connecting flight to the tournament was cancelled, and he was instructed by Glass to debate virtually in the hotel lobby, according to student affidavits. Hotel security reportedly threatened to arrest the student for trespassing.

Lanning was not aware of the situation until a judge from the tournament informed him of the incident. 

Finances 

In addition to these incidents, Lanning and students also reported unpaid reimbursements for their work in the debate team. 

According to court documents, the University owes Lanning $1,909.91 in reimbursable business expenses. As for student grievances, the lawsuit states that Glass was responsible for uploading receipts of a student’s expenses, but documents show that those receipts were not submitted.

Aftermath

Lanning reported the incidents to Honors College Dean Heidi Appel and Associate Dean Jonathon Williamson on April 11. Lanning was terminated on May 27. 

Some members of the UH debate team have indicated they will not return, citing the Honors College’s handling of the situation.

The Cougar has reached out to the University and Lanning’s legal representative for comments, but has not received a response. This article will be updated as new information becomes available.

The University of Oregon has selected an interim dean for the School of Journalism and Communication amid a budget crisis and ongoing faculty layoffs. 

Regina Lawrence, current associate dean of the SOJC at University of Oregon Portland, has accepted a one-year term as interim dean.

Lawrence will be stepping in at a time of crisis for the SOJC which is facing an over $700,000 budget deficit and faculty layoffs. She will relocate her office to UO’s main campus during this “critical” period transition according to an announcement sent by Provost Christopher Long. 

The interim dean was selected through a series of meetings with SOJC faculty, staff and leadership. 

Lawrence has been with the SOJC since 2015, where she has served as director of the Agora Journalism Center and served as a member of the executive leadership team. During her time at UO’s Portland campus, Lawrence helped grow the master’s programs and chaired the campus-wide Academic Collaborative.

A political scientist by training, Lawrence’s research has focused on press freedom and press-state relations. She received her Ph.D in Political Science from the University of Washington. Prior to working at UO, she spent time at The University of Texas Austin and Louisiana State University.

Lawrence succeeds Juan-Carlos Molleda, who resigned last month amid scrutiny of his travel expenses. His last day was July 31. 

A national search will begin in the fall. A permanent dean is intended to be named by July 1, 2026.
