Penn State administrators canceled head football coach Joe Paterno’s weekly press conference this morning. Paterno was expected to comment on the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse case.
Paterno’s son Scott told The Associated Press that administrators from Penn State President Graham Spanier’s office cancelled the conference.
Scott Paterno said his father was disappointed by the cancellation and was prepared to answer questions about both Sandusky and Saturday’s Nebraska game.
Sports Information Director Jeff Nelson read the following statement outside Beaver Stadium at about 11:45 Tuesday afternoon to a group of about 100 members of media: “Due to the ongoing legal circumstances centered around the recent allegations and charges, we have determined that today’s press conference cannot be held and will not be rescheduled.”
Media were supposed to be let into the stadium’s press room at 11 a.m.
Today’s press conference would be to be the first opportunity for the press to question Paterno about his former defensive coordinator Sandusky, who was indicted Friday for sexually abusing young boys in Penn State football facilities among other locations.
