Berkeley Police Kill Armed Suspect Following Chase

By Javier Panzar

Officers from the Berkeley Police Department shot and killed a hit-and-run suspect in West Berkeley Monday night after the suspect had fired at the officers during a foot chase, according to a police announcement.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was running away from police officers down 8th Street when he began firing on police officers. At least two officers returned fire, according to Berkeley police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss.

“(The suspect) turned towards the officer and point a semi-automatic pistol at the officers,” Kusmiss told ABC 7 news this morning. “He fired at least two rounds. Through further investigation we will be able to be definitive in terms of how many rounds he shot at officers, before the officers returned fire.”

According a police release, the suspect was being pursued near Albany when he refused to stop after allegedly being involved in a hit-and-run crash.

The chase continued into Berkeley where the suspect ran from his car near 8th and Jones streets, toward Camelia Street.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and both officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave while the department and Alameda County Districts Attorney’s Office investigate the shooting.
