Gyroscope: On the surface, it seems like this would be mostly used for certain games, but coupled with the GPS and the 3GS’s digital compass, this would also make apps such as Google Maps more useful, as it could function as a better compass.
5-megapixel camera: If you take a lot of pictures with your phone, this could be useful. A higher quality picture than the original, this isn’t a must-have change, (although an LED flash is a nice touch) but if you’re going to upgrade your company’s flagship, you might as well upgrade everything else.
iOS 4.0 (and multi-tasking): This could be a big deal depending on the circumstances, or it could be relatively minuscule depending on the user, but being able to respond to a text message while on the phone with someone else, or if you’re looking at Google Earth while trying to locate a good restaurant on the highway. (Assuming you’re in the passenger seat of the car, I do not condone phone usage or anything that takes eyes off the road for extended periods.)
VOIP between iPhone 4s: This is a potentially cool idea. Skype and similar video chat functions make contact with one another easier on a computer, but the fact that this sort of thing can go mobile is a technology that several other smart phones will adapt within several months.
Improved Battery Life: If you’ve been using your iPhone/smart phone excessively, there’s some good news for you. Audio playback time has gone up from 30 to 40 hours on one charge, and talk and Internet browsing go anywhere from six to 10 hours.
Improved Resolution and HD video camera: This is probably the most awesome thing that the new iPhone can field. The video camera has improved, and can now film in 720p at 30 frames per second, making impromptu video journalism (or taping your dog doing silly things) even crisper and cleaner. The new Retina Display makes things viewable at a 960×640 resolution, or 326 pixels per inch. That comes out to be about 3/4 of the pixels of the much larger iPad, and it’s a phone.
Verdict: Some of the new features are already on other smart phones, such as multitasking. Sprint’s HTC Evo 4G has an 8 MP camera that outclasses the iPhone 4. This phone is a gadgethead’s dream though, and it could bring Steve Jobs that much closer to ruling everyone’s life. It’s probably worth the wait to see more hands-on tests, but if you’ve been wanting an iPhone but the new features aren’t for you, the discounted 3GS might appeal to you. If you’ve got the money to spend though, this looks like a decent buy.
