Razorbacks, Cox headline MLB draft

By Harold McIlvain II

The MLB Draft is in the books–but the worrying doesn’t stop for Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn.

After watching 14 current Razorbacks or signees be selected, Van Horn said he couldn’t sleep last night thinking about the possibilities of who might be coming back to campus next year.

“We just try to figure it out,” Van Horn said. “I worried last night who is going to come and who is not. It’s the worst part of my job. You just don’t know.”

Before the season started, Van Horn said he knew there would be talented Razorbacks who decided to go to the MLB. But he just doesn’t know how many that will be until Aug. 16, which is the deadline for signing a contract.

“We knew we would lose eight, nine or ten guys off this team,” Van Horn said. “I’d say we lose at least seven or eight. We just try to figure it out. It’s a juggling act and it’s really comical.”

Razorback third baseman Zack Cox, who was selected 25th overall in the first round, said coming to Arkansas was the right thing to do for him, as he could develop more as a player.

“If I went straight out of high school I probably would’ve went straight to the outfield,” Cox said. “They probably wouldn’t have even given me a chance to play third. But I came here and I improved defensively.”

Razorback outfielder and pitcher Brett Eibner was taken in the second round as a hitter–but Van Horn said it will be difficult to get the Houston, Texas, native just to hit and not pitch.

“He never threw a pitch under 96 mph the other day,” Van Horn said. “He warmed up and his first pitch was 96. He never went under 96 with his fastball. He’s got that to fall back on, but they’re gonna have to pry that bat out of his hand. They’ve probably got a fight on their hands.”

But with the draft finally over, current Razorbacks can get back to focussing mentally on the Tempe Super Regional.

“They are glad it’s over and we are glad it’s over,” Van Horn said. “Now we can just really move on mentally and get after it this weekend.”
